Introduction

Is light a stream of tiny particles, or a wave? In 1637 Descartes gave the corpuscular (particle) model and derived Snell’s law from it; Newton developed it further in his famous book Opticks. This model predicted that when a ray bends towards the normal on refraction, light must travel faster in the second medium. Is model ke hisaab se refraction mein ray normal ki taraf mude to doosre medium mein light tez chalni chahiye.

In 1678 Christiaan Huygens proposed the wave theory of light. It also explains reflection and refraction, but predicts the opposite: if the wave bends towards the normal, light is slower in the second medium. In 1850 Foucault measured the speed of light in water and found it less than in air — the wave model was right.1678 में क्रिस्टियान हाइगेंस ने प्रकाश का तरंग सिद्धांत दिया। 1678 mein Christiaan Huygens ne wave theory of light di. Ye bhi reflection aur refraction samjhaati hai, par ulti prediction karti hai: wave normal ki taraf mude to doosre medium mein light slow hogi.

Thomas Young’s interference experiment (1801) firmly established that light is a wave. Its wavelength is tiny — yellow light has λ ≈ 0.6 μm — much smaller than mirrors and lenses. That is why light seems to travel in straight lines. The optics that ignores the wavelength completely is geometrical (ray) optics; a ray is the path of energy flow in the limit λ → 0. Thomas Young ke interference experiment (1801) ne pakke taur par prove kiya ki light wave hai. Iski wavelength bahut chhoti hai — yellow light ki λ ≈ 0.6 μm — jo mirrors aur lenses se bahut chhoti hai. Isiliye light seedhi line mein chalti lagti hai. Jo optics wavelength ko poori tarah ignore karti hai wo geometrical (ray) optics hai; ray λ → 0 limit mein energy flow ka path hai.

One puzzle remained: a wave was thought to need a medium, so how does light cross the vacuum of space? Maxwell answered it: light is an electromagnetic wave — changing electric and magnetic fields that create each other and travel even through vacuum (Chapter 8). Ek puzzle bacha tha: maana jaata tha ki wave ko medium chahiye, to light space ke vacuum ko kaise cross karti hai? Maxwell ne jawaab diya: light ek electromagnetic wave hai — badalte electric aur magnetic fields jo ek-doosre ko banate hain aur vacuum mein bhi chalte hain (Chapter 8).

Drop a stone into a calm pond: circular ripples spread out. All points on one ring are at the same distance from the source, so they oscillate in phase. Such a surface (or line) of points oscillating in phase is a wavefront — a surface of constant phase. The speed at which it moves outward is the speed of the wave, and energy travels perpendicular to the wavefront. Shaant talaab mein pathar daaliye: circular ripples failti hain. Ek ring ke saare points source se same distance par hain, isliye same phase mein oscillate karte hain. Ye jis speed se bahar badhti hai wo wave ki speed hai, aur energy wavefront ke perpendicular chalti hai.

A point source sending waves equally in all directions gives spherical wavefronts (see). Far away from the source a small piece of the sphere is practically flat — a plane wavefront (see). Sunlight reaching Earth is a plane wave. Sab directions mein barabar waves bhejne wala point source spherical wavefronts deta hai (dekhiye). Source se bahut door sphere ka chhota tukda lagbhag flat hota hai — plane wavefront (dekhiye). Earth tak pahunchti sunlight plane wave hai.

Huygens principle is a geometrical construction: if you know the wavefront now, it gives the wavefront at a later time. (1) Every point of a wavefront is a source of secondary disturbance; the secondary wavelets spread out in all directions with the speed v of the wave. (2) After time τ, draw spheres of radius vτ from each point; their common tangent (forward envelope) is the new wavefront. Huygens principle ek geometrical construction hai: abhi ka wavefront pata ho to ye baad ke time ka wavefront deta hai. (2) Time τ ke baad har point se radius vτ ke spheres banaiye; unki common tangent (forward envelope) naya wavefront hai.

For a spherical wavefront F₁F₂ centred at O (F₁F₂), the envelope G₁G₂ (G₁G₂) is again a sphere centred at O. The construction also gives a backwave D₁D₂ (D₁D₂), which does not exist in reality. Huygens simply assumed the wavelets have zero amplitude backwards — an ad hoc assumption; the absence of the backwave is properly justified only by more rigorous wave theory.O O centre wale spherical wavefront F₁F₂ (F₁F₂) ke liye envelope G₁G₂ (G₁G₂) phir se O centre wala sphere hai. Construction ek backwave D₁D₂ (D₁D₂) bhi deti hai, jo asal mein nahi hoti.

The same construction works for a plane wave: wavelets of radius vτ from F₁F₂ give a new plane wavefront G₁G₂ a distance vτ ahead (see). The lines A₁A₂, B₁B₂, normal to both wavefronts, are the rays (rays). Yahi construction plane wave ke liye bhi kaam karti hai: F₁F₂ se radius vτ ki wavelets vτ distance aage naya plane wavefront G₁G₂ deti hain (dekhiye). Dono wavefronts ke perpendicular lines A₁A₂, B₁B₂ rays hain (rays).

A wavefront is not a ray. Wavefront = surface of constant phase; ray = direction of energy flow. When the speed is the same in all directions, rays are always perpendicular to wavefronts. Wavefront ray nahi hai. Let PP′ separate medium 1 (speed v₁) and medium 2 (speed v₂). A plane wavefront AB arrives at angle i. When end A touches the surface, end B still has to travel BC. Let τ be the time it takes, so BC = v₁τ (BC). In the same time τ the wavelet from A spreads into medium 2 as a sphere of radius AE = v₂τ (wavelet). The tangent plane CE drawn from C to this sphere is the refracted wavefront (CE). Maan lijiye PP′ medium 1 (speed v₁) aur medium 2 (speed v₂) ko alag karta hai. A plane wave AB falls at angle i on a mirror MN. If B takes time τ to reach C, then BC = vτ. Draw a sphere of radius vτ from A (same medium, same speed) and the tangent plane CE from C to it: CE is the reflected wavefront (CE). Since AE = BC = vτ and AC is common, the right triangles EAC and BAC are congruent, so i = r — the law of reflection. Ek plane wave AB mirror MN par angle i par girti hai. With these two laws, prisms, lenses and mirrors follow. In wave language (prism): in a thin prism the lower part of the wavefront crosses the thickest glass, is delayed most, and the emerging wavefront tilts. In a convex lens the central part is delayed most, so the emerging wavefront has a depression in the middle — it becomes spherical and converges to the focus F (lens). A concave mirror turns a plane wave into a spherical wave converging to its focus (mirror). In do laws se prism, lens aur mirror samajh aate hain. Wave ki bhasha mein (prism): thin prism mein wavefront ka neeche wala part sabse mote glass se guzarta hai, sabse zyada peechhe rehta hai, aur nikalta wavefront jhuk jaata hai. Convex lens mein beech ka part sabse zyada peechhe rehta hai, isliye nikalte wavefront ke beech mein gadda banta hai — wo spherical hokar focus F par converge hota hai (lens). Concave mirror plane wave ko focus par converge hoti spherical wave mein badal deta hai (mirror).

Equal time along every ray: from a point on the object to its image, the time taken is the same along every ray. The ray through the centre of a lens travels a shorter path, but through more (slower) glass — so it arrives at the same time as rays near the edge. Har ray ke along same time: object ke kisi point se uske image tak har ray ke along laga time same hota hai. (b) When light goes from a rarer to a denser medium its speed decreases. Does this mean the energy carried by the wave decreases? (c) In the wave picture, intensity is set by the square of the amplitude. (a) Reflection and refraction happen because light interacts with the atoms of matter. Atoms behave like oscillators: they are forced to vibrate at the frequency of the incoming light, and a charged oscillator emits light of its own frequency of oscillation. So the scattered (reflected and refracted) light has the same frequency as the incident light.(a) (a) Reflection aur refraction isliye hote hain kyonki light matter ke atoms se interact karti hai. Take a point P with S₁P = S₂P (on the perpendicular bisector). Waves leaving S₁ and S₂ in phase arrive at P in phase: y₁ = a cos ωt and y₂ = a cos ωt, so y = 2a cos ωt. If the needles are coherent, φ at each point stays fixed and we get a stable interference pattern. If the two sources do not keep a constant phase difference and φ changes very rapidly, the maxima and minima move about rapidly and we only see the time-averaged intensity. Thomas Young’s clever trick was to “lock” the phases. He made two pinholes S₁ and S₂, very close together, and lit them from another single pinhole S, which was lit by a bright source. Bigger λ or D → wider fringes; bigger d → narrower fringes.β, n β, n par depend nahi karta: saare fringes (bright aur dark) ki width same hai. Typical numbers: red light λ = 600 nm, d = 0.3 mm, D = 1 m gives β = 2 mm — easy to see with the eye. Because the wavelength is so small, a tiny slit separation is needed; that is why interference of light is not noticed in everyday life. Typical numbers: red light λ = 600 nm, d = 0.3 mm, D = 1 m se β = 2 mm — aankh se aasaani se dikhta hai. Look closely at the shadow of an opaque object: near the edge of the geometrical shadow there are alternate dark and bright regions, just like interference. This is diffraction — a general property of all waves: sound, light, water waves, even matter waves. Light’s wavelength is much smaller than most obstacles, so we rarely notice it. Yet diffraction sets the limit of resolution of our eye, telescopes and microscopes, and the colours you see on a CD are due to diffraction. Kisi opaque object ki shadow dhyaan se dekhiye: geometrical shadow ke kinaare ke paas interference jaisi hi baari-baari dark aur bright regions hoti hain. Phir bhi diffraction hi hamari aankh, telescopes aur microscopes ki limit of resolution tay karta hai, aur CD par dikhte colours diffraction ki wajah se hain.

10.6.1The single slitएकल झिरीSingle slit

Even before Young, Newton and others had noticed that light spreads out from narrow holes and slits and seems to turn around corners into the shadow. Only the wave picture explains this — just as you are not surprised to hear someone talking around a corner.

Replace Young’s double slit by a single narrow slit lit by monochromatic light: a broad pattern appears with a central bright region, and on both sides alternate dark and bright regions, getting weaker away from the centre. To understand it, let a parallel beam fall normally on a slit LN of width a (a); M is its midpoint and MC the normal to the slit (MC). Why the first minimum is at θ = λ/a: split the slit into two halves. Pair each point of the upper half with the point a/2 below it in the lower half. When a sin θ = λ, each pair has path difference λ/2 — they cancel in pairs, so the total is zero. For θ = 2λ/a split the slit into four parts, and so on. Pehla minimum θ = λ/a par kyon: slit ko do halves mein baantiye. Upper half ke har point ko lower half mein a/2 neeche wale point se joda banaiye. Jab a sin θ = λ, to har jode ka path difference λ/2 hai — jode ek-doosre ko cancel karte hain, total zero. θ = 2λ/a ke liye slit ko chaar parts mein baantiye, ityadi.

So the central maximum spreads from θ = −λ/a to +λ/a: angular width 2λ/a, i.e. width 2λD/a on a screen at distance D. A narrower slit gives a wider pattern.अतः केंद्रीय उच्चिष्ठ θ = −λ/a से +λ/a तक फैला है: कोणीय चौड़ाई 2λ/a, अर्थात् दूरी D पर पर्दे पर चौड़ाई 2λD/a। Isliye central maximum θ = −λ/a se +λ/a tak faila hai: angular width 2λ/a, yaani distance D par screen par width 2λD/a. Is diffraction different from interference? Richard Feynman wrote that no one has ever been able to define the difference satisfactorily — it is just a question of usage. Roughly: with a few sources (say two) we call it interference; with a large number of sources we usually say diffraction. YDSE vs single slit: in YDSE all fringes have the same width β = λD/d and (ideally) the same brightness. (10.15), (10.16)(10.15), (10.16)(10.15), (10.16)

Here a is the amplitude and ω = 2πν. The displacement (along y) is at right angles to the direction of travel (x): a transverse wave. Since the displacement is along y it is a y-polarised wave; each point moves on a straight line, so it is linearly polarised; and the string stays in the x-y plane, so it is plane polarised. Vibrating in the x-z plane gives a z-polarised wave, z(x, t) = a sin(kx − ωt) (10.17). If the plane of vibration changes randomly in very short intervals, the wave is unpolarised — the displacement still stays perpendicular to the direction of travel. Yahan a amplitude aur ω = 2πν hai. Agar vibration ka plane bahut chhote intervals mein randomly badalta rahe, to wave unpolarised hai — displacement phir bhi direction of travel ke perpendicular rehta hai.

Light waves are transverse: the electric field E is always at right angles to the direction of propagation. A simple polaroid shows this. A polaroid is a thin plastic-like sheet of long-chain molecules aligned in one direction. E-components along the molecules are absorbed; light comes out linearly polarised with E oscillating perpendicular to the molecules — this direction is the pass-axis of the polaroid. Light waves transverse hain: electric field E hamesha propagation direction ke perpendicular hota hai. Let I₀ be the intensity of polarised light after the first polariser P₁. If the pass-axis of P₂ makes angle θ with that of P₁, the light after P₂ has intensity I = I₀ cos²θ. Maan lijiye pehle polariser P₁ ke baad polarised light ki intensity I₀ hai. Agar P₂ ka pass-axis P₁ ke axis se angle θ banata hai, to P₂ ke baad intensity I = I₀ cos²θ.

P₁ and P₃ are crossed, so the angle between the pass-axes of P₂ and P₃ is (π/2 − θ). The light emerging from P₃:P₁ और P₃ क्रॉस हैं, अतः P₂ और P₃ के पारित-अक्षों के बीच कोण (π/2 − θ) है। P₁ aur P₃ crossed hain, isliye P₂ aur P₃ ke pass-axes ke beech angle (π/2 − θ) hai. P₃ se nikalti light:

I = I0 cos2θ cos2(π/2 − θ) = I0 cos2θ sin2θ = (I0/4) sin22θ

So the transmitted intensity is zero at θ = 0 and θ = π/2 and maximum, I₀/4, at θ = π/4 (45°) (graph). (b) No. The refractive index of glass is larger for violet than for red (that is why a prism disperses white light, violet deviating most). Since v = c/n, violet travels slower than red in glass.(b) नहीं। (b) Nahi.
