Parts and what they mean
- Diffraction pattern (विवर्तन पैटर्न) — Bright broad centre, then fainter bands on both sides (computed).
- Intensity curve (तीव्रता वक्र) — Computed from I = I₀ (sin β/β)², β = πa sin θ/λ (beyond the book; the book gives the positions).
- Central maximum (केंद्रीय उच्चिष्ठ) — At θ = 0 all parts of the slit add in phase: brightest point.
- Minima (निम्निष्ठ) — Zero intensity at θ ≈ nλ/a, n = ±1, ±2, ±3, …
- Secondary maxima (द्वितीयक उच्चिष्ठ) — Near θ ≈ (n + ½)λ/a, getting weaker and weaker with n (the first is only about 4.7% of the central one).
- Width of the central maximum (केंद्रीय उच्चिष्ठ की चौड़ाई) — Angular width 2λ/a (between the first minima). On a screen at distance D: 2λD/a. Narrower slit → wider spread.
