11.1IntroductionभूमिकाIntroduction

By the end of the 19th century, Maxwell’s equations and Hertz’s experiments (1887) had firmly established that light is a wave. In the same years, experiments on electric discharge through gases at very low pressure (about 0.001 mm of mercury) led to historic discoveries — X-rays (Roentgen, 1895) and the electron (J. J. Thomson, 1897).19वीं शताब्दी के अंत तक मैक्सवेल के समीकरणों और हर्ट्ज़ के प्रयोगों (1887) ने दृढ़ता से स्थापित कर दिया था कि प्रकाश एक तरंग है। उन्हीं वर्षों में बहुत कम दाब (लगभग 0.001 mm पारा स्तंभ) पर गैसों में विद्युत विसर्जन के प्रयोगों से ऐतिहासिक खोजें हुईं — X-किरणें (रॉन्टजन, 1895) और इलेक्ट्रॉन (जे. जे. टॉमसन, 1897)।19th century ke end tak Maxwell ke equations aur Hertz ke experiments (1887) ne pakka kar diya tha ki light ek wave hai. Unhi saalon mein bahut kam pressure (lagbhag 0.001 mm mercury) par gases mein electric discharge ke experiments se historic discoveries huin — X-rays (Roentgen, 1895) aur electron (J. J. Thomson, 1897).

In a discharge tube, a fluorescent glow appeared on the glass opposite the cathode (yellowish-green for soda glass), caused by radiation coming from the cathode — cathode rays, discovered by William Crookes in 1870. In 1879 he suggested they are streams of fast-moving negatively charged particles. J. J. Thomson confirmed this: using mutually perpendicular electric and magnetic fields, he was the first to measure their speed (about 0.1 to 0.2 times the speed of light) and their specific charge e/m. The accepted value today is e/m = 1.76 × 10¹¹ C/kg. Discharge tube mein cathode ke saamne wale glass par ek fluorescent glow dikhi (soda glass mein peeli-hari), jo cathode se aane wali radiation ki wajah se thi — cathode rays, jinhe William Crookes ne 1870 mein discover kiya. 1879 mein unhone suggest kiya ki ye tez chalne wale negatively charged particles ki streams hain. J. J. Thomson ne ise confirm kiya: perpendicular electric aur magnetic fields lagakar unhone pehli baar inki speed (light ki speed ka lagbhag 0.1 se 0.2 guna) aur specific charge e/m naapa. Aaj ki accepted value e/m = 1.76 × 10¹¹ C/kg hai.

The value of e/m did not depend on the cathode metal or on the gas in the tube — the particles are universal. Around 1887 it was also found that some metals emit negatively charged particles when lit by ultraviolet light, and some emit them when heated strongly. These particles had the same e/m as cathode-ray particles. So all of them are the same particle. Thomson (1897) named them electrons — fundamental, universal constituents of matter (Nobel Prize 1906).e/m Lagbhag 1887 mein ye bhi paaya gaya ki kuch metals ultraviolet light padne par, aur kuch zyada garam karne par negatively charged particles emit karti hain. In particles ka e/m bhi cathode-ray particles jitna same tha. Matlab ye sab ek hi particle hain. Thomson (1897) ne inhe electrons naam diya — matter ke fundamental, universal constituents (Nobel Prize 1906).

In 1913 R. A. Millikan, with his oil-drop experiment, found that the charge on a drop is always an integral multiple of an elementary charge e = 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ C — electric charge is quantised. From e and e/m, the mass m of the electron could be found.1913 में आर. ए. मिलिकन ने तेल-बूँद प्रयोग से पाया कि किसी बूँद पर आवेश हमेशा एक मूल आवेश e = 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ C का पूर्ण गुणज होता है — विद्युत आवेश क्वांटीकृत है। e और e/m से इलेक्ट्रॉन का द्रव्यमान m ज्ञात किया जा सका।1913 mein R. A. Millikan ne oil-drop experiment se paaya ki kisi drop par charge hamesha ek elementary charge e = 1.602 × 10⁻¹⁹ C ka integral multiple hota hai — electric charge quantised hai. e aur e/m se electron ka mass m nikala ja saka.

The big idea of this chapter: light, a wave, sometimes behaves like a stream of particles (photons); and electrons, particles, sometimes behave like waves. This is the dual nature of radiation and matter.इस अध्याय का मुख्य विचार: प्रकाश, जो तरंग है, कभी-कभी कणों (फोटॉनों) की धारा जैसा व्यवहार करता है; और इलेक्ट्रॉन, जो कण हैं, कभी-कभी तरंगों जैसा व्यवहार करते हैं। यही विकिरण और द्रव्य की द्वैत प्रकृति है।Is chapter ka main idea: light, jo wave hai, kabhi-kabhi particles (photons) ki stream jaisa behave karti hai; aur electrons, jo particles hain, kabhi-kabhi waves jaisa behave karte hain. Yahi radiation aur matter ki dual nature hai.

11.2Electron Emissionइलेक्ट्रॉन उत्सर्जनElectron Emission

Metals have free electrons that carry current inside them. But these electrons cannot normally escape from the surface. If an electron tries to leave, the metal surface becomes positively charged and pulls it back; the attraction of the positive ions holds it in. An electron can come out only if it gets enough energy to overcome this pull. Agar koi electron bahar nikalne ki koshish kare, to metal ki surface positively charged ho jaati hai aur use waapas kheench leti hai; positive ions ka attraction use andar rok ke rakhta hai. Electron tabhi bahar aa sakta hai jab use is pull ko paar karne layak energy mile.

The minimum energy an electron needs to escape from the metal surface is called the work function of the metal, written φ0 and usually measured in electron volt (eV). It depends on the metal and on the nature of its surface.धातु पृष्ठ से बाहर निकलने के लिए इलेक्ट्रॉन को आवश्यक न्यूनतम ऊर्जा को धातु का कार्य फलन कहते हैं; इसे φ0 से दर्शाते हैं और प्रायः इलेक्ट्रॉन वोल्ट (eV) में मापते हैं। यह धातु और उसके पृष्ठ की प्रकृति पर निर्भर करता है।Metal surface se bahar nikalne ke liye electron ko chahiye minimum energy ko metal ka work function kehte hain; ise φ0 se likhte hain aur usually electron volt (eV) mein naapte hain. 11.3.1Hertz’s observationsहर्ट्ज़ के प्रेक्षणHertz ke observations

The photoelectric effect was discovered in 1887 by Heinrich Hertz during his experiments on electromagnetic waves. While producing waves with a spark discharge, he noticed that the high-voltage sparks across the detector loop became stronger when the emitter plate was lit by ultraviolet light from an arc lamp.

Light falling on the metal somehow helped free charged particles — which we now know are electrons — to escape. Some electrons near the surface absorb enough energy from the light to overcome the attraction of the positive ions, and then escape into the surrounding space.धातु पर पड़ने वाला प्रकाश किसी तरह मुक्त आवेशित कणों — जिन्हें अब हम इलेक्ट्रॉन जानते हैं — को बाहर निकलने में सहायता करता था। पृष्ठ के पास के कुछ इलेक्ट्रॉन प्रकाश से धन आयनों का आकर्षण पार करने लायक पर्याप्त ऊर्जा अवशोषित करते हैं और फिर आसपास के स्थान में निकल जाते हैं।Metal par padne wali light kisi tarah free charged particles — jinhe ab hum electrons jaante hain — ko bahar nikalne mein madad karti thi. Surface ke paas ke kuch electrons light se positive ions ka attraction paar karne layak kaafi energy absorb karte hain aur phir aas-paas ki space mein nikal jaate hain.

11.3.2Hallwachs’ and Lenard’s observationsहॉलवाक्स और लेनार्ड के प्रेक्षणHallwachs aur Lenard ke observations

Wilhelm Hallwachs and Philipp Lenard studied photoelectric emission in detail during 1886–1902. Lenard found that when ultraviolet light fell on the emitter plate of an evacuated glass tube with two electrodes, a current flowed in the circuit; when the UV was stopped, the current also stopped. So UV falling on the emitter C ejects electrons, which are attracted to the positive collector A — light causes a current in the external circuit. Wilhelm Hallwachs aur Philipp Lenard ne 1886–1902 ke dauraan photoelectric emission ko detail mein study kiya. Lenard ne paaya ki do electrodes wali evacuated glass tube ki emitter plate par ultraviolet light daalne par circuit mein current behta hai; UV band karte hi current bhi ruk jaata hai. Matlab emitter C par padne wali UV electrons nikaalti hai, jo positive collector A ki taraf attract hote hain — light external circuit mein current banati hai.

Hallwachs (1888) connected a negatively charged zinc plate to an electroscope. In ultraviolet light the plate lost its charge. An uncharged zinc plate became positively charged in UV, and a positively charged plate became even more positive. He concluded that negatively charged particles are emitted from zinc under UV light. Uncharged zinc plate UV mein positively charged ho gayi, aur positively charged plate aur zyada positive ho gayi. Unhone conclude kiya ki UV light mein zinc se negatively charged particles emit hote hain.

After the electron was discovered (1897), it became clear that light makes the emitter plate emit electrons, which, being negative, are pushed towards the collector by the electric field. Hallwachs and Lenard also observed that no electrons were emitted at all when the frequency of the light was below a certain minimum value, called the threshold frequency. This minimum frequency depends on the material of the emitter. Ye emitter ke material par depend karti hai.

Metals like zinc, cadmium, magnesium respond only to ultraviolet (short wavelength) light, while alkali metals such as lithium, sodium, potassium, caesium and rubidium respond even to visible light. Such photosensitive substances emit electrons when lit; these electrons are called photoelectrons, and the phenomenon is the photoelectric effect. Zinc, cadmium, magnesium jaisi metals sirf ultraviolet (short wavelength) light se respond karti hain, jabki lithium, sodium, potassium, caesium aur rubidium jaisi alkali metals visible light se bhi respond karti hain. Aise photosensitive substances light padne par electrons emit karte hain; in electrons ko photoelectrons aur is phenomenon ko photoelectric effect kehte hain.

The battery keeps a potential difference between C and A that can be varied, and a commutator can reverse the polarity, so A can be made positive or negative with respect to C. When A is positive, electrons are attracted to it and a current flows. A voltmeter measures the potential difference between the plates and a microammeter measures the photocurrent. Frequency is changed with coloured filters/glass; intensity is changed by changing the distance of the source from the emitter. Battery C aur A ke beech potential difference banaye rakhti hai jise badla ja sakta hai, aur ek commutator polarity ulat sakta hai, jisse A ko C ke relative positive ya negative kiya ja sake. 11.4.1Effect of intensity of light on photocurrentप्रकाश-विद्युत धारा पर प्रकाश की तीव्रता का प्रभावPhotocurrent par light ki intensity ka effect

Keep A positive with respect to C, and keep the frequency and the potential fixed. Now vary the intensity. The photocurrent increases linearly with intensity. Since the photocurrent is proportional to the number of photoelectrons emitted per second, this means: number of photoelectrons per second ∝ intensity of the light. A ko C ke relative positive rakhiye, aur frequency aur potential fixed rakhiye. Ab intensity badaliye. Photocurrent intensity ke saath linearly badhta hai. Kyunki photocurrent har second emit hue photoelectrons ki number ke proportional hai, iska matlab: photoelectrons per second ∝ light ki intensity.

11.4.2Effect of potential on photoelectric currentप्रकाश-विद्युत धारा पर विभव का प्रभावPhotoelectric current par potential ka effect

Keep the light at a fixed frequency ν and fixed intensity I₁. Make A positive and increase its potential gradually: the photocurrent increases. At some positive potential all the emitted electrons reach A and the current becomes maximum — it saturates. Increasing the accelerating potential further does not increase it. This maximum value is the saturation current. Light ki frequency ν aur intensity I₁ fixed rakhiye. A ko positive karke uska potential dheere-dheere badhaiye: photocurrent badhta hai. Kisi positive potential par saare emitted electrons A tak pahunch jaate hain aur current maximum ho jaata hai — saturate ho jaata hai. Accelerating potential aur badhane par bhi ye nahi badhta. Is maximum value ko saturation current kehte hain.

Now make A negative (retarding) and more and more negative. Electrons are now repelled; only the more energetic ones reach A, so the current falls rapidly and becomes zero at a sharply defined negative potential −V0. The minimum negative (retarding) potential given to A for which the photocurrent becomes zero is the cut-off or stopping potential V0. Ab A ko negative (retarding) aur zyada negative kijiye. Ab electrons repel hote hain; sirf zyada energy wale A tak pahunchte hain, isliye current tezi se girta hai aur ek sharply defined negative potential −V0 par zero ho jaata hai. A ko diya gaya wo minimum negative (retarding) potential jis par photocurrent zero ho jaata hai, cut-off ya stopping potential V0 kehlaata hai.

Photoelectrons do not all have the same energy. The current becomes zero only when the retarding potential can stop even the most energetic photoelectrons, those with maximum kinetic energy Kmax. So:सभी प्रकाश-इलेक्ट्रॉनों की ऊर्जा समान नहीं होती। धारा तभी शून्य होती है जब मंदक विभव सर्वाधिक ऊर्जा वाले प्रकाश-इलेक्ट्रॉनों को, जिनकी गतिज ऊर्जा अधिकतम Kmax है, भी रोक सके। अतः:Saare photoelectrons ki energy same nahi hoti. Current tabhi zero hota hai jab retarding potential sabse zyada energy wale photoelectrons ko, jinki kinetic energy maximum Kmax hai, bhi rok sake. Isliye:

Kmax = e V0 (11.1)
Stopping potential measures the maximum kinetic energy of photoelectrons.निरोधी विभव प्रकाश-इलेक्ट्रॉनों की अधिकतम गतिज ऊर्जा का माप है।Stopping potential photoelectrons ki maximum kinetic energy ka maap hai.

Repeat with the same frequency but higher intensities I₂ and I₃ (I₃ > I₂ > I₁). The saturation currents are higher (more electrons per second, proportional to intensity), but the stopping potential stays the same. So for a given frequency, V0 is independent of intensity: Kmax depends on the light source and the emitter material, not on intensity.समान आवृत्ति पर अधिक तीव्रताओं I₂ और I₃ (I₃ > I₂ > I₁) के साथ दोहराइए। संतृप्त धाराएँ अधिक होती हैं (प्रति सेकंड अधिक इलेक्ट्रॉन, तीव्रता के अनुक्रमानुपाती), पर निरोधी विभव वही रहता है। अतः दी गई आवृत्ति के लिए V0 तीव्रता पर निर्भर नहीं: Kmax प्रकाश स्रोत और उत्सर्जक के पदार्थ पर निर्भर है, तीव्रता पर नहीं।Same frequency par zyada intensities I₂ aur I₃ (I₃ > I₂ > I₁) ke saath repeat kijiye. Saturation currents zyada hote hain (har second zyada electrons, intensity ke proportional), par stopping potential same rehta hai. Isliye di gayi frequency ke liye V0 intensity par depend nahi karta: Kmax light source aur emitter material par depend karta hai, intensity par nahi.

Do not say “brighter light gives faster electrons”. Brighter light gives more electrons, not faster ones. The fastest electron’s energy (eV0) is fixed by the frequency and the metal.“अधिक तीव्र प्रकाश से तेज़ इलेक्ट्रॉन” कहना गलत है। तीव्र प्रकाश अधिक इलेक्ट्रॉन देता है, तेज़ नहीं। सबसे तेज़ इलेक्ट्रॉन की ऊर्जा (eV0) आवृत्ति और धातु से तय होती है।“Zyada bright light se tez electrons” kehna galat hai. Bright light zyada electrons deti hai, tez nahi. Sabse tez electron ki energy (eV0) frequency aur metal se tay hoti hai.

Now adjust the light to the same intensity at different frequencies and record photocurrent vs collector potential. We get different stopping potentials but the same saturation current. The stopping potential is more negative for higher frequencies: if ν₃ > ν₂ > ν₁ then V0₃ > V0₂ > V0₁. The greater the frequency, the greater the maximum kinetic energy, so a greater retarding potential is needed to stop the electrons. Ab alag-alag frequencies par light ki intensity same rakh kar current vs collector potential likhiye. Humein alag stopping potentials par same saturation current milta hai. Zyada frequency par stopping potential zyada negative hota hai: agar ν₃ > ν₂ > ν₁ to V0₃ > V0₂ > V0₁. Frequency jitni zyada, maximum kinetic energy utni zyada, isliye electrons ko rokne ke liye zyada retarding potential chahiye.

Two implications: (i) Kmax varies linearly with frequency but is independent of intensity; (ii) for ν below the cut-off frequency ν0, no emission is possible even if the intensity is large. This ν0 is the threshold frequency; it is different for different metals. Different materials respond differently — selenium is more sensitive than zinc or copper; ultraviolet light causes photoelectric effect in copper but green or red light does not. Do nateeje: (i) Kmax frequency ke saath linearly badalti hai par intensity par depend nahi karti; (ii) cut-off frequency ν0 se kam ν ke liye emission possible nahi, chahe intensity kitni bhi zyada ho. Yahi ν0 threshold frequency hai; ye alag metals ke liye alag hai. Alag materials alag respond karte hain — selenium zinc ya copper se zyada sensitive hai; ultraviolet light copper mein photoelectric effect laati hai par green ya red light nahi.

Above the threshold, emission starts instantaneously — without any apparent time lag — even if the light is very dim. It is now known to start within about 10⁻⁹ s or less.देहली से ऊपर, उत्सर्जन तुरंत — बिना किसी प्रत्यक्ष समय-पश्चता के — आरंभ हो जाता है, चाहे प्रकाश बहुत मंद हो। अब ज्ञात है कि यह लगभग 10⁻⁹ s या उससे कम में आरंभ होता है।Threshold se upar, emission turant — bina kisi apparent time lag ke — shuru ho jaata hai, chahe light bahut dim ho. 11.5Photoelectric Effect and Wave Theory of Lightप्रकाश-विद्युत प्रभाव और प्रकाश का तरंग सिद्धांतPhotoelectric Effect aur Light ki Wave Theory

By the end of the 19th century the wave picture explained interference, diffraction and polarisation beautifully. In it, light is an electromagnetic wave whose energy is spread continuously over the region where the wave extends. Can it explain the photoelectric observations?19वीं शताब्दी के अंत तक तरंग चित्र व्यतिकरण, विवर्तन और ध्रुवण की सुंदर व्याख्या करता था। इसमें प्रकाश एक विद्युतचुंबकीय तरंग है जिसकी ऊर्जा तरंग के फैलाव वाले पूरे क्षेत्र में लगातार फैली होती है। क्या यह प्रकाश-विद्युत प्रेक्षणों की व्याख्या कर सकता है?19th century ke end tak wave picture interference, diffraction aur polarisation ko bahut achhe se explain karti thi. Isme light ek electromagnetic wave hai jiski energy wave ke poore region mein lagatar faili hoti hai. Kya ye photoelectric observations ko explain kar sakti hai?

In the wave picture, free electrons at the surface absorb radiant energy continuously. Greater intensity means larger amplitudes of E and B, so each electron should absorb more energy — so Kmax should increase with intensity. Also, whatever the frequency, a sufficiently intense beam (given enough time) should give electrons enough energy to escape — so no threshold frequency should exist. These expectations directly contradict observations (i), (ii) and (iii). Wave picture mein surface ke free electrons radiant energy lagatar absorb karte hain. Zyada intensity ka matlab E aur B ke bade amplitudes, to har electron ko zyada energy milni chahiye — yaani Kmax intensity ke saath badhni chahiye. Saath hi, frequency kuch bhi ho, kaafi intense beam (kaafi time mein) electrons ko bahar nikalne layak energy de degi — yaani koi threshold frequency nahi honi chahiye. Ye expectations observations (i), (ii) aur (iii) ke bilkul ulat hain.

Also, in the wave picture the energy is absorbed over the entire wavefront by a very large number of electrons, so the energy absorbed per electron per unit time is small. Calculations show it could take hours or more for one electron to collect enough energy to escape. This contradicts observation (iv) — emission is instantaneous. In short, the wave picture cannot explain the most basic features of photoelectric emission. Saath hi, wave picture mein energy poore wavefront par bahut saare electrons absorb karte hain, isliye har electron ko per unit time milne wali energy bahut kam hoti hai. Calculations dikhati hain ki ek electron ko bahar nikalne layak energy jodne mein ghante ya usse zyada lag sakte hain. Ye observation (iv) ke ulat hai — emission instantaneous hai. Short mein, wave picture photoelectric emission ke sabse basic features ko explain nahi kar sakti.

In 1905, Albert Einstein proposed a radically new picture. Emission does not happen by continuous absorption of energy. Radiation energy is made of discrete units — quanta. Each quantum has energy hν, where h is Planck’s constant and ν the frequency. In the photoelectric effect an electron absorbs one quantum hν. If this exceeds the work function φ0, the electron is emitted with maximum kinetic energy:1905 में अल्बर्ट आइंस्टाइन ने एक बिल्कुल नया चित्र प्रस्तुत किया। Emission energy ke lagatar absorption se nahi hota. Radiation energy discrete units — quanta se bani hai. Har quantum ki energy hν hai, jahan h Planck’s constant aur ν frequency hai. Photoelectric effect mein ek electron ek quantum hν absorb karta hai. Agar ye work function φ0 se zyada ho, to electron maximum kinetic energy ke saath emit hota hai:

This predicts that the V0–ν graph is a straight line with slope h/e, independent of the material. During 1906–1916 Millikan did a series of experiments aiming to disprove Einstein’s equation. He measured the slope for sodium and, using the known e, found h — close to Planck’s constant (6.626 × 10⁻³⁴ J s) found in an entirely different context. So in 1916 Millikan proved the equation instead of disproving it, and verified it with great precision for several alkali metals. Ye predict karta hai ki V0–ν graph slope h/e wali straight line hai, material se independent. 1906–1916 mein Millikan ne Einstein ke equation ko galat saabit karne ke liye experiments ki series ki. 11.7Particle Nature of Light: The Photonप्रकाश की कणीय प्रकृति: फोटॉनLight ki Particle Nature: Photon

The photoelectric effect showed the strange fact that light, when interacting with matter, behaves as if made of quanta, each of energy hν. Einstein also showed that a light quantum carries momentum hν/c. A definite energy and a definite momentum strongly suggest a particle — later named the photon. Its particle-like behaviour was confirmed in 1924 by A. H. Compton’s experiment on scattering of X-rays by electrons. 11.8Wave Nature of Matterद्रव्य की तरंग प्रकृतिMatter ki Wave Nature

Light (and electromagnetic radiation in general) has a dual nature. Its wave nature shows up in interference, diffraction and polarisation; in the photoelectric effect and the Compton effect, which involve energy and momentum transfer, it behaves as particles (photons). Which description suits best depends on the experiment. Even in seeing: the eye-lens focusing light is described by the wave picture, but absorption by the rods and cones of the retina needs the photon picture. Light (aur generally electromagnetic radiation) ki dual nature hai. Iski wave nature interference, diffraction aur polarisation mein dikhti hai; photoelectric effect aur Compton effect mein, jisme energy aur momentum transfer hota hai, ye particles (photons) jaisa behave karti hai. Kaunsa description sahi hai, ye experiment par depend karta hai. Dekhne mein bhi: eye-lens dwara light ka focus wave picture se samjha jaata hai, par retina ke rods aur cones dwara absorption ke liye photon picture chahiye.

A natural question: if radiation is dual, might particles of nature (electrons, protons, …) also show wave-like character? In 1924 the French physicist Louis Victor de Broglie (pronounced “de Broy”) proposed boldly that moving particles of matter should display wave-like properties under suitable conditions. He reasoned that nature is symmetrical: if radiation shows dual aspects, so should matter. The wavelength associated with a particle of momentum p is:स्वाभाविक प्रश्न: यदि विकिरण द्वैत है, तो क्या प्रकृति के कण (इलेक्ट्रॉन, प्रोटॉन, …) संवेग p वाले कण से संबद्ध तरंगदैर्ध्य है:Natural sawaal: agar radiation dual hai, to kya nature ke particles (electrons, protons, …) bhi wave jaisa character dikha sakte hain? 1924 mein French physicist Louis Victor de Broglie (pronounce “de Broy”) ne bold hypothesis di ki moving matter particles ko suitable conditions mein wave jaisi properties dikhani chahiye. Unka tark tha ki nature symmetrical hai: agar radiation dual aspects dikhati hai, to matter ko bhi dikhane chahiye. Momentum p wale particle se judi wavelength hai:

λ = hp = hm v (11.5)
de Broglie relation: λ is a wave property, p a particle property; Planck’s constant h links them.दे ब्रॉग्ली संबंध: λ तरंग का गुण, p कण का गुण; प्लांक नियतांक h दोनों को जोड़ता है।de Broglie relation: λ wave ki property, p particle ki property; Planck’s constant h dono ko jodta hai.

Here m is the mass and v the speed of the particle. The wave is called a matter wave or de Broglie wave, and λ the de Broglie wavelength. For a material particle (11.5) is a hypothesis, testable only by experiment. But it is satisfied by a photon too: for a photon p = hν/c (11.6), so λ = h/p = c/ν (11.7) — exactly the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation. Yahan m particle ka mass aur v speed hai. Is wave ko matter wave ya de Broglie wave, aur λ ko de Broglie wavelength kehte hain. Material particle ke liye (11.5) ek hypothesis hai, jo sirf experiment se test ho sakti hai. Par photon bhi ise satisfy karta hai: photon ke liye p = hν/c (11.6), isliye λ = h/p = c/ν (11.7) — bilkul electromagnetic radiation ki wavelength.

From (11.5), λ is smaller for a heavier (large m) or faster (large v) particle. A ball of mass 0.12 kg at 20 m/s has p = 2.40 kg m/s and λ = h/p = (6.63 × 10⁻³⁴ J s)/(2.40 kg m/s) = 2.76 × 10⁻³⁴ m — far too small to measure. That is why everyday objects show no wave-like behaviour. In the sub-atomic world the wave character is significant and measurable.(11.5) Points to ponder (NCERT): free electrons are “free” only inside the metal; they have an energy distribution (they obey Pauli’s exclusion principle), so φ0 is the least energy needed. The photoelectric effect shows that energy is absorbed in discrete units hν — not quite the same as saying light consists of particles of energy hν. The stopping potential (independent of intensity, dependent on frequency) is the crucial test between the wave and photon pictures. For a matter wave, λ = h/p has physical meaning; its phase velocity has none, but its group velocity equals the particle’s velocity. Points to ponder (NCERT): free electrons sirf metal ke andar “free” hain; unka energy distribution hota hai (wo Pauli ke exclusion principle ko follow karte hain), isliye φ0 least energy hai.
