Life can be studied at many levels — macromolecules, cells, tissues, organs, individual organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems and biomes. At any level we can ask two kinds of questions. When a bulbul sings in the morning, "How does the bird sing?" asks for the mechanism (voice box, vibrating bone), while "Why does the bird sing?" asks for the significance (perhaps to communicate with its mate in the breeding season). Life ko kai levels par padhte hain — macromolecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems aur biomes. Har level par do type ke questions: bulbul subah gaati hai — "Kaise gaati hai?" (mechanism: voice box, vibrating bone) aur "Kyun gaati hai?" (significance: breeding season mein mate se baat karna).Science asks "how?" (the mechanism) and "why?" (the purpose). Example: how a bulbul sings, and why it sings.
ecology studies the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their physical (abiotic) environment. It deals with four levels of biological organisation — organisms, populations, communities and biomes. This chapter looks at ecology at the population level. ecology organisms ke aapas ke aur unke physical (abiotic) environment ke saath interactions ki study hai. Iske 4 levels: organisms, populations, communities aur biomes. Is chapter mein population level ki ecology.Ecology = how living things interact with each other and with their surroundings. This chapter: populations.
Populations
Population Attributes
In nature, individuals rarely live alone. Most live in groups in a defined area, share or compete for similar resources and can interbreed — a population. A group formed even by asexual reproduction is also treated as a population in ecological studies. Examples: all the cormorants in a wetland, rats in an abandoned dwelling, teakwood trees in a forest tract, bacteria in a culture plate, lotus plants in a pond. Nature mein individuals akele kam rehte hain. Zyadatar ek area mein group mein rehte hain, resources share ya compete karte hain aur interbreed kar sakte hain — yeh population hai. Asexual reproduction se bana group bhi population maana jaata hai. Examples: wetland ke saare cormorants, khaali ghar ke rats, jungle ke teak trees, culture plate ke bacteria, talaab ke lotus.A population = members of one species living together in one area, e.g. all lotus plants in a pond.
An individual has to cope with a changing environment, but natural selection works at the population level to evolve useful traits. So population ecology links ecology to population genetics and evolution. Evolution happens in populations, not in single individuals — so studying populations is important.
A population has attributes that an individual does not. An individual is born or dies, but a population has a birth rate and a death rate, expressed per capita. Example: a pond had 20 lotus plants last year and 8 new ones were added — birth rate = 8/20 = 0.4 offspring per lotus per year. If 4 of 40 fruitflies in a lab population die in a week, death rate = 4/40 = 0.1 individuals per fruitfly per week. Population ke kuch attributes hote hain jo individual mein nahi. Individual paida hota ya marta hai, par population ka birth rate aur death rate hota hai (per capita). Example: talaab mein 20 lotus the, 8 naye aaye → birth rate = 8/20 = 0.4 per lotus per year. Birth rate = births ÷ members (8/20 = 0.4). Death rate = deaths ÷ members (4/40 = 0.1).
Another attribute is the sex ratio: an individual is male or female, but a population has a sex ratio, e.g. 60 per cent females and 40 per cent males. Ek aur attribute hai sex ratio: individual male ya female hota hai, par population ka sex ratio hota hai — jaise 60% females, 40% males.Sex ratio = share of females and males, e.g. 60 : 40.
Age pyramidsआयु पिरामिडAge pyramidsNCERT Fig 11.1 · 6 tappable partsOpenA population has individuals of different ages. If the age distribution (per cent individuals of each age group) is plotted, we get an age pyramid NCERT Fig 11.1. For humans, age pyramids usually show males and females together. The three age groups are pre-reproductive, reproductive and post-reproductive. The shape tells the growth status: expanding (growing), stable or declining. Population mein alag-alag age ke individuals hote hain. Age distribution (har age group ka %) plot karo toh age pyramid banta hai NCERT Fig 11.1. Humans mein males aur females dono dikhate hain. Teen age groups: pre-reproductive, reproductive, post-reproductive. Shape batata hai population expanding (badh rahi), stable ya declining hai.Age pyramid = a chart of young, adult and old. Wide base → growing; similar widths → stable; narrow base → declining.
Population size tells us a lot about a population’s status. Whatever we study — competition, a predator’s impact, a pesticide — we judge it by the change in population size. Size can be under 10 (Siberian cranes at Bharatpur wetlands in any year) or millions (Chlamydomonas in a pond). Population size is technically called population density (N). Population size uski condition ke baare mein bahut batata hai. Population density (N) = population size. It can be tiny (under 10 Siberian cranes) or huge (millions of Chlamydomonas).
Density need not always be counted in numbers. One huge banyan tree with a large canopy versus 200 carrot grass (Parthenium hysterophorus) plants — saying the banyan’s density is low underestimates its role, so per cent cover or biomass is more meaningful. For huge populations (bacteria in a petri dish) counting is impossible. Sometimes relative density is enough (fish caught per trap). Often we estimate indirectly — the tiger census in national parks and tiger reserves is based on pug marks and fecal pellets. Density hamesha numbers mein nahi naapi jaati. Ek bada banyan vs 200 carrot grass (Parthenium hysterophorus) plants — banyan ki density kam kehna galat hoga; yahan per cent cover ya biomass better hai. Petri dish ke bacteria gin hi nahi sakte. Kabhi relative density kaafi hai (per trap pakdi fish). Aksar indirect estimate — tiger census pug marks aur fecal pellets se hota hai.Density can be numbers, per cent cover, biomass or a relative count. Tigers are counted from pug marks and droppings.
11.1.2Population Growthसमष्टि वृद्धिPopulation Growth
What changes population densityNCERT Fig 11.2 · 6 tappable partsOpenPopulation size keeps changing with food availability, predation pressure, bad weather and so on. Density in a habitat changes through four basic processes: two increase it — natality (births added in a period) and immigration (members of the same species coming in from elsewhere) — and two decrease it — mortality (deaths) and emigration (members leaving) NCERT Fig 11.2. Food, predation pressure, kharab mausam se population size badalta rehta hai. Density 4 processes se badalti hai: do badhate hain — natality (births) aur immigration (same species ka bahar se aana); do ghatate hain — mortality (deaths) aur emigration (chhod kar jaana) NCERT Fig 11.2.Births and arrivals add; deaths and departures subtract.
If N is the density at time t, the density at time t + 1 is Nt+1 = Nt + [(B + I) − (D + E)]. Density rises if (B + I) is more than (D + E). Normally births and deaths matter most; immigration and emigration matter only in special cases — e.g. when a new habitat is just being colonised, immigration may add more than births.यदि समय t पर घनत्व N है, तो t + 1 पर Nt+1 = Nt + [(B + I) − (D + E)]। (B + I) > (D + E) Agar time t par density N hai, toh t + 1 par Nt+1 = Nt + [(B + I) − (D + E)]. (B + I) zyada ho (D + E) se toh density badhti hai. Normally births aur deaths sabse important; immigration/emigration special cases mein — jaise naya habitat colonise ho raha ho toh immigration births se zyada add kar sakta hai.New size = old size + (births + arrivals) − (deaths + departures).
Population growth curvesNCERT Fig 11.3 · 8 tappable parts · 3 stepsOpenGrowth models — (i) Exponential growth. When resources (food and space) are unlimited, each species can fully realise its innate potential to grow — as Darwin observed. The population then grows exponentially (geometrically). With per capita birth rate b and death rate d, the change in N per unit time is dN/dt = (b − d) × N. Writing (b − d) = r: dN/dt = rN. Here r is the intrinsic rate of natural increase (r), a key parameter for judging how any biotic or abiotic factor affects growth. Examples of r: Norway rat 0.015, flour beetle 0.12, human population in India in 1981 0.0205. Growth models — (i) Exponential growth. Jab resources (food, space) unlimited hon, har species apni poori growth capacity dikha sakti hai — jaisa Darwin ne dekha. Tab population exponentially (geometrically) badhti hai. Per capita birth rate b aur death rate d ho toh dN/dt = (b − d) × N; (b − d) = r → dN/dt = rN. r = intrinsic rate of natural increase (r) — kisi bhi factor ka growth par asar naapne ka main parameter. r values: Norway rat 0.015, flour beetle 0.12, India ki human population (1981) 0.0205.With unlimited food and space, numbers multiply fast: dN/dt = rN, where r = birth rate − death rate.
Plotting N against time gives a J-shaped curve NCERT Fig 11.3a. The integral form is Nt = N0 e^rt, where Nt is density after time t, N0 is density at time zero, r is the intrinsic rate of natural increase and e is the base of natural logarithms (2.71828). Any species growing exponentially can reach enormous numbers quickly — Darwin showed even a slow-breeding elephant could, without checks.N N vs time plot karo toh J-shaped curve banta hai NCERT Fig 11.3a. Integral form: Nt = N0 e^rt — Nt = time t ke baad density, N0 = shuru ki density, r = intrinsic rate, e = 2.71828. Exponential growth mein koi bhi species jaldi hi bahut badi ho jaati hai — Darwin ne dikhaya ki slow-breeding elephant bhi, bina checks ke.Exponential growth makes a J curve: Nt = N0 e^rt.
(ii) Logistic growth. No population in nature has unlimited resources. Individuals compete for limited resources and the "fittest" survive and reproduce. A habitat can support only a maximum number of a species — nature’s carrying capacity (K) for that species there. Growing with limited resources, a population shows a lag phase, then acceleration, deceleration and finally an asymptote, when density reaches K. The plot of N against time is a sigmoid (S-shaped) curve — Verhulst-Pearl logistic growth NCERT Fig 11.3b: dN/dt = rN (K − N)/K, where N is density at time t, r the intrinsic rate of natural increase and K the carrying capacity.(ii) (ii) Logistic growth. Nature mein kisi population ke paas unlimited resources nahi hote. Limited resources ke liye competition hota hai aur "fittest" survive karke reproduce karte hain. Habitat ek maximum number hi support kar sakta hai — carrying capacity (K). Limited resources mein population pehle lag phase, phir acceleration, deceleration aur end mein asymptote dikhati hai, jab density K tak pahunch jaati hai. N vs t plot = sigmoid (S-shaped) curve — Verhulst-Pearl logistic growth NCERT Fig 11.3b: dN/dt = rN (K − N)/K.With limited resources, growth slows and stops at the carrying capacity K — an S curve: dN/dt = rN (K − N)/K.
Because resources for most animal populations are finite and sooner or later become limiting, the logistic model is considered the more realistic one. Governments of many countries have also brought in restraints to limit human population growth. Zyadatar animal populations ke resources limited hain aur der-saver kam padte hain, isliye logistic model zyada realistic maana jaata hai. Kai deshon ki governments ne bhi human population growth limit karne ke kadam uthaye hain.Real populations follow the S curve more often than the J curve.
Life History Variation
Populations evolve to maximise their reproductive fitness, also called Darwinian fitness (a high r value), in their habitat. Under a set of selection pressures, organisms evolve the most efficient reproductive strategy. Some breed only once in a lifetime (Pacific salmon fish, bamboo); others breed many times (most birds and mammals). Some produce many small offspring (oysters, pelagic fishes); others a few large offspring (birds, mammals). Ecologists suggest these life history traits evolved in relation to the constraints of the abiotic and biotic components of the habitat. Populations apne habitat mein reproductive fitness — Darwinian fitness (high r) — maximum karne ke liye evolve hoti hain. Kuch life mein sirf ek baar breed karte hain (Pacific salmon fish, bamboo), kuch kai baar (zyadatar birds aur mammals). Kuch bahut saare chhote offspring (oysters, pelagic fishes), kuch thode bade offspring (birds, mammals). Ecologists kehte hain yeh traits habitat ke abiotic aur biotic constraints ke hisaab se evolve hue. Some species breed once (salmon, bamboo), others many times; some have many small young (oysters), others a few big ones (mammals) — each fits its habitat.
Population Interactions
No natural habitat has just one species. Every species needs at least one more species to feed on; even a plant needs soil microbes to recycle nutrients, and animals for pollination. So plants, animals and microbes interact to form a biological community. interspecific interactions can be beneficial (+), detrimental (−) or neutral (0) to one or both species (Table 11.1). Kisi natural habitat mein sirf ek species nahi hoti. Har species ko khaane ke liye kam se kam ek aur species chahiye; plant ko bhi soil microbes aur pollination ke liye animals chahiye. Aise plants, animals, microbes milkar community banate hain. interspecific interactions ek ya dono species ke liye beneficial (+), harmful (−) ya neutral (0) ho sakte hain (Table 11.1).Species always live with other species. Their effect on each other can be + (good), − (bad) or 0 (no effect).

In parasitism and predation (+ −) only one species benefits (parasite, predator) and the other is harmed (host, prey). In commensalism (+ 0) one benefits and the other is neither benefited nor harmed. In amensalism (− 0) one is harmed and the other is unaffected. Predation, parasitism and commensalism share one feature: the species live closely together.सहोपकारिता (+ +) में दोनों को लाभ, स्पर्धा (− −) में दोनों को हानि। परजीविता व परभक्षण (+ −) में केवल एक (परजीवी, परभक्षी) को लाभ, दूसरे (पोषी, शिकार) को हानि। सहभोजिता (+ 0) में एक को लाभ, दूसरा न लाभ न हानि। एमेंसलिज़्म (− 0) में एक को हानि, दूसरा अप्रभावित। परभक्षण, परजीविता व सहभोजिता में जातियाँ पास-पास रहती हैं।Mutualism (+ +) mein dono ko fayda, competition (− −) mein dono ko nuksaan. Parasitism aur predation (+ −) mein ek (parasite, predator) ko fayda, doosre (host, prey) ko nuksaan. Commensalism (+ 0) mein ek ko fayda, doosra unaffected. Predation, parasitism aur commensalism mein species paas-paas rehti hain.++ mutualism, −− competition, +− predation and parasitism, +0 commensalism, −0 amensalism.
(i) Predation. Predation is nature’s way of passing the energy fixed by plants to higher trophic levels. A tiger eating a deer is predation — and so is a sparrow eating a seed; herbivores, broadly, are not very different from predators. Predators also keep prey populations under control; without them prey could reach very high densities and destabilise the ecosystem. Exotic species become invasive in a new area because their natural predators are absent: the prickly pear cactus brought into Australia in the early 1920s spread over millions of hectares of rangeland and was controlled only after a cactus-feeding moth from its natural habitat was introduced. Biological control of agricultural pests rests on this ability of predators.(i) परभक्षण। (i) Predation. Exotic species naye area mein invasive ho jaati hain kyunki wahan unke natural predators nahi hote: 1920s mein Australia laaya gaya prickly pear cactus millions of hectares mein phail gaya, aur tab control hua jab uske natural habitat se cactus khaane wala moth laaya gaya. Agriculture mein biological control isi par based hai.Predators pass energy up the food chain and keep prey numbers in check. Without its predator, prickly pear cactus overran Australia until a cactus-eating moth was brought in.
Predators also help maintain species diversity by reducing competition among prey species. On the rocky intertidal coast of the American Pacific, when the predatory starfish Pisaster was removed from an enclosed area, more than 10 species of invertebrates became extinct within a year due to interspecific competition. A predator that overexploits its prey may drive it extinct and then die out itself — so predators in nature are "prudent". Predators prey species ke beech competition kam karke species diversity bachaate hain. American Pacific coast ke rocky intertidal area se predator starfish Pisaster hataya gaya, toh ek saal mein 10 se zyada invertebrate species interspecific competition se extinct ho gayin. Jo predator prey ko over-exploit kare, woh prey ko aur phir khud ko bhi extinct kar sakta hai — isliye nature mein predators "prudent" hote hain.Removing the starfish Pisaster led to the loss of 10+ prey species. Predators don’t wipe out their prey, or they would starve.
Prey have evolved defences. Some insects and frogs are cryptically coloured (camouflaged). Some are poisonous and so avoided: the Monarch butterfly is highly distasteful to birds because of a chemical it takes in as a caterpillar by feeding on a poisonous weed. For plants, herbivores are the predators — nearly 25 per cent of all insects are phytophagous — and plants cannot run away. So plants have morphological defences such as thorns (Acacia, cactus) and chemical defences: Calotropis makes highly poisonous cardiac glycosides, so cattle and goats never browse it. Nicotine, caffeine, quinine, strychnine and opium are also made by plants as defences against grazers and browsers. Prey ne defences evolve kiye hain. Kuch insects aur frogs camouflaged hote hain. Kuch poisonous hain isliye bach jaate hain: Monarch butterfly birds ko bahut kadvi lagti hai ek chemical ki wajah se, jo woh caterpillar stage mein poisonous weed khaakar leti hai. Plants ke liye herbivores hi predators hain — lagbhag 25% insects phytophagous hain — aur plants bhaag nahi sakte. Isliye thorns (Acacia, cactus) aur chemical defences: Calotropis (aak) bahut zehreele cardiac glycosides banata hai, isliye gaay-bakri ise nahi charti. Nicotine, caffeine, quinine, strychnine, opium bhi plants defence ke liye banate hain.Prey hide (camouflage) or taste bad (Monarch butterfly). Plants use thorns (Acacia, cactus) or poisons (Calotropis; nicotine, caffeine, quinine…).
(ii) Competition. Darwin believed interspecific competition is a strong force in evolution. Competition is not limited to closely related species — unrelated species can compete too: in some shallow South American lakes, visiting flamingoes and resident fishes compete for zooplankton. And resources need not be limiting: in interference competition one species lowers the other’s feeding efficiency even when food and space are abundant. So competition is best defined as a process in which the fitness of one species (its r) is significantly lower in the presence of another species.(ii) स्पर्धा। (ii) Competition. Darwin maante the ki interspecific competition evolution ki strong force hai. Competition sirf close species mein nahi — unrelated species bhi karti hain: South America ki kuch shallow lakes mein flamingoes aur fishes zooplankton ke liye compete karte hain. Resources limited hona bhi zaroori nahi: interference competition mein ek species ki presence se hi doosri ki feeding kam ho jaati hai. Definition: doosri species ki presence mein ek species ki fitness (r) kaafi kam ho jaana.Competition = one species does worse (lower r) because another is there. Even flamingoes and fishes compete for zooplankton.
In the lab (as Gause showed) the superior competitor eventually eliminates the other when resources are limited, but in nature the evidence is not always conclusive. Strong circumstantial cases exist: the Abingdon tortoise of the Galapagos Islands became extinct within a decade after goats arrived, apparently because goats browsed more efficiently. Another clue is competitive release: Connell’s field experiments on the rocky coasts of Scotland showed the larger, superior barnacle Balanus dominates the intertidal area and excludes the smaller barnacle Chathamalus. Herbivores and plants seem more affected by competition than carnivores. Lab mein (Gause ne dikhaya) resources limited hon toh superior competitor doosri species ko khatam kar deta hai, par nature mein proof hamesha pakka nahi. Strong examples: Galapagos mein goats aane ke 10 saal mein Abingdon tortoise extinct ho gaya — goats better browse karti thi. Doosra sign: competitive release — Scotland ke rocky coast par Connell ke experiments mein bada barnacle Balanus intertidal area par dominate karta hai aur chhote barnacle Chathamalus ko bahar rakhta hai. Herbivores aur plants carnivores se zyada affect hote hain.Goats wiped out the Abingdon tortoise; the big barnacle Balanus pushes out the small Chathamalus.
Gause’s competitive exclusion principle says two closely related species competing for the same resources cannot co-exist indefinitely; the competitively inferior one is eliminated — true if resources are limiting, but not otherwise. Newer studies show species may evolve ways to co-exist, such as resource partitioning: choosing different feeding times or foraging patterns. MacArthur showed that five closely related species of warblers living on the same tree avoided competition through behavioural differences in foraging. Gause ka competitive exclusion principle: same resource ke liye compete karne wali do close species hamesha saath nahi reh sakti; kamzor wali khatam ho jaati hai — yeh tab sahi hai jab resources limited hon. Close competitors can’t share forever (Gause) — unless they split the resource, like MacArthur’s five warblers feeding differently on one tree.
(iii) Parasitism. Free lodging and meals explain why parasitism evolved in so many groups. Many parasites are host-specific, so host and parasite co-evolve: if the host evolves a way to resist, the parasite must evolve a counter. Parasite adaptations include loss of unnecessary sense organs, adhesive organs or suckers, loss of the digestive system and high reproductive capacity. Life cycles can be complex: the human liver fluke needs two intermediate hosts (a snail and a fish); the malarial parasite needs a vector (mosquito). Most parasites harm the host — lowering its survival, growth, reproduction and population density, and making it easier prey.(iii) परजीविता। (iii) Parasitism. Free mein rehna-khaana — isliye parasitism kai groups mein evolve hua. Kai parasites host-specific hain, toh host aur parasite co-evolve karte hain: host resist kare toh parasite uska tod nikaale. Adaptations: bekaar sense organs ka loss, suckers/adhesive organs, digestive system ka loss, high reproduction. Life cycle complex: human liver fluke ko 2 intermediate hosts (snail aur fish) chahiye; malaria parasite ko vector (mosquito). Zyadatar parasites host ko nuksaan karte hain — survival, growth, reproduction, population density kam, aur host predator ke liye easy ban jaata hai.Parasites get food and home from the host and usually harm it. They lose unneeded organs, have suckers and breed a lot. Liver fluke: snail + fish as middle hosts; malaria: mosquito vector.
Ectoparasites feed on the outside of the host: lice on humans, ticks on dogs, copepods on many marine fish, and Cuscuta — a plant parasite on hedge plants that has lost its chlorophyll and leaves. (The female mosquito is not considered a parasite even though it needs our blood for reproduction — think why.) Endoparasites live inside the host (liver, kidney, lungs, red blood cells); their life cycles are more complex and their body is simplified while reproductive potential is high. In brood parasitism, the parasitic bird lays its eggs in the host’s nest; its eggs have evolved to look like the host’s in size and colour — watch the cuckoo (koel) and crow in spring and summer. Ectoparasites host ki bahar ki surface se khaate hain: insaan par lice (joon), kutte par ticks, marine fish par copepods, aur Cuscuta (amarbel) — hedge plants par parasite plant jisne chlorophyll aur leaves kho diye. (Female mosquito parasite nahi maana jaata, bhale hi reproduction ke liye blood chahiye — socho kyun.) Endoparasites host ke andar (liver, kidney, lungs, RBCs) rehte hain; life cycle zyada complex, body simple par reproduction high. brood parasitism mein parasitic bird apne ande host ke ghosle mein deti hai; ande host jaise size aur colour ke evolve hue — spring-summer mein koel aur kauwe ko dekho.Outside parasites: lice, ticks, Cuscuta. Inside parasites: in liver, lungs, blood. Brood parasite: the koel lays look-alike eggs in a crow’s nest.
(iv) Commensalism. One species benefits and the other is neither harmed nor benefited. An orchid growing as an epiphyte on a mango branch, and barnacles on the back of a whale, benefit while the mango tree and whale gain nothing apparent. The cattle egret forages near grazing cattle because the moving cattle flush out insects from the vegetation. The clown fish lives among the stinging tentacles of a sea anemone and is protected from predators; the anemone gets no apparent benefit.(iv) सहभोजिता। (iv) Commensalism. Aam ki branch par epiphyte orchid aur whale ki peeth par barnacles fayda paate hain; aam aur whale ko koi fayda nahi. Cattle egret charti gaayon ke paas khaana dhoondhta hai kyunki chalti gaayein ghaas se insects nikaal deti hain. Clown fish sea anemone ke stinging tentacles ke beech reh kar predators se bachti hai; anemone ko koi fayda nahi. One gains, the other is unaffected: orchid on mango, barnacles on whale, cattle egret with cattle, clown fish in sea anemone.
Fig and wasp: mutualismNCERT Fig 11.4 · 11 tappable partsOpen(v) Mutualism. Both species benefit. Lichens are an intimate partnership of a fungus with photosynthesising algae or cyanobacteria. Mycorrhizae are associations of fungi with roots of higher plants: the fungi help absorb nutrients, the plant gives energy-yielding carbohydrates. The most spectacular cases are plant–animal relationships: plants pay animals "fees" — pollen and nectar for pollinators, juicy fruits for seed dispersers — while guarding against "cheaters" that steal nectar without pollinating. So flowers and their pollinators often co-evolve.(v) सहोपकारिता। (v) Mutualism. Mycorrhizae fungi aur plant roots ka association: fungi nutrients absorb karne mein madad, plant carbohydrates deta hai. Sabse amazing examples plant–animal relations mein: plants pollinators ko pollen aur nectar, seed dispersers ko juicy fruits "fees" dete hain, aur nectar churane wale "cheaters" se bachte hain. Isliye flower aur pollinator aksar co-evolve karte hain. Both gain: lichen (fungus + alga), mycorrhiza (fungus + root). Plants "pay" animals with nectar, pollen and fruits.
Many fig species have a tight one-to-one relationship with a partner wasp species — a fig can be pollinated only by its own wasp NCERT Fig 11.4. The female wasp uses the fruit as an egg-laying site and the developing seeds to feed its larvae; it pollinates the fig inflorescence while searching for egg-laying sites. In return, the fig gives up some developing seeds as food for the wasp larvae (see the fig–wasp diagram). Kai fig species ka apne partner wasp species se one-to-one relation hota hai — ek fig sirf apne wasp se pollinate hota hai NCERT Fig 11.4. Female wasp fruit mein ande deti hai aur developing seeds se apne larvae ko khilati hai; ande ki jagah dhoondhte hue fig inflorescence ko pollinate kar deti hai. Badle mein fig apne kuch developing seeds wasp larvae ko khaane deta hai (fig–wasp diagram dekho). Each fig has its own wasp. The wasp pollinates the fig; the fig lets the wasp lay eggs and feeds its larvae a few seeds.
Ophrys orchid: sexual deceitNCERT Fig 11.5 · 5 tappable parts · 3 stepsOpenOrchids show a huge variety of flower patterns, many evolved to attract the right pollinator (bees and bumblebees) NCERT Fig 11.5. Not all orchids give rewards. The Mediterranean orchid Ophrys uses "sexual deceit": one petal looks uncannily like the female bee in size, colour and markings. The male bee pseudocopulates with the flower, gets dusted with pollen, and transfers it when it pseudocopulates with another flower. If the female bee’s colour pattern changes even slightly during evolution, pollination success drops unless the orchid co-evolves to keep the resemblance. Orchids mein flower patterns ki bahut variety hai, kai sahi pollinator (bees, bumblebees) ko attract karne ke liye evolve hui NCERT Fig 11.5. Saare orchids reward nahi dete. Mediterranean orchid Ophrys "sexual deceit" karta hai: uski ek petal size, colour aur markings mein female bee jaisi dikhti hai. Male bee flower se pseudocopulate karta hai, pollen se bhar jaata hai, aur doosre flower par wahi karte hue pollen pahuncha deta hai. Agar evolution mein female bee ka colour pattern thoda bhi badle, toh orchid ko bhi co-evolve karna padega, warna pollination kam ho jaayega.Ophrys tricks a male bee with a petal that looks like a female bee. The bee carries pollen to the next flower — a clear case of co-evolution.
