Hydrogen burns and oxygen helps burning, yet water made from them puts out fire — a compound has new properties. But the mass of water formed = mass of hydrogen + mass of oxygen used. This chapter starts from that idea. Hydrogen jalti hai aur oxygen jalne mein madad karti hai, phir bhi inse bana paani aag bujhata hai — compound ke gun naye hote hain. Par bane paani ka mass = hydrogen + oxygen ka mass. Ye chapter isi idea se shuru hota hai.

Activity 9.1 (physical change): salt dissolved in water on a digital balance — mass of solution = mass of water + mass of salt. Activity 9.2 (chemical change): baking soda + vinegar. In an open flask (set-up 1) the reading drops because CO₂ gas escapes. With a balloon tied on the flask (set-up 2) the gas is trapped and the reading stays the same. Tap the closed flask. Activity 9.1 (physical change): digital balance par paani mein ghula namak — solution ka mass = paani + namak ka mass. Law of Conservation of Mass (Lavoisier, 1789): matter can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction — total mass of reactants = total mass of products. Activity 9.3: sodium sulfate + barium chloride → white precipitate of barium sulfate + sodium chloride; no gas forms, so even an open set-up shows no change in mass. A digital balance has an uncertainty of ±1 in the last digit, so tiny differences are experimental error. Law of Conservation of Mass (Lavoisier, 1789): chemical reaction mein matter na banaya ja sakta hai na khatam kiya ja sakta hai — reactants ka kul mass = products ka kul mass. Joseph Proust: in a compound, the elements are always combined in a fixed ratio by mass, whatever its source or method of preparation. Pure water from a river, borewell or ocean always has hydrogen : oxygen = 1 : 8 by mass — 9 g water gives 1 g H and 8 g O. Also called the Law of Definite Proportions or Proust’s Law. Example from history: cinnabar (hingula) always gives about 86.22% mercury and 13.78% sulfur. Joseph Proust: compound mein elements hamesha mass ke fixed ratio mein jude hote hain, chahe source ya banane ka tareeka kuch bhi ho. The two laws above were explained by John Dalton (1808). A postulate is a basic assumption accepted without formal proof. Upar ke dono niyamon ko John Dalton (1808) ne samjhaya. Postulate wo basic maanyata hai jo bina formal proof ke sach maani jaati hai. Dalton ke postulates:

In a reaction atoms only rearrange. When magnesium burns, Mg atoms join O atoms to form magnesium oxide — the atoms are not destroyed. (Ch 8 showed that atoms are actually divisible into subatomic particles, but in chemical reactions they behave as units.) Reaction mein atoms sirf rearrange hote hain. Magnesium jalne par Mg atoms O atoms se judkar magnesium oxide banate hain — atoms khatam nahi hote. (Ch 8 mein dekha ki atom asal mein subatomic particles mein toot sakta hai, par chemical reactions mein wo unit ki tarah behave karta hai.)

A molecule is an electrically neutral entity of more than one atom that can exist independently and shows all the properties of the substance. Molecules of elements: H₂, Cl₂, O₂, N₂. Molecules of compounds: HCl, H₂O. Some elements like helium exist only as atoms (already stable). Atoms with an incomplete valence shell become stable by (1) sharing electrons or (2) transferring electrons. The bonded system has lower energy than the separate atoms. The force holding atoms together is a chemical bond. Molecule ek se zyada atoms ki electrically neutral unit hai jo akele reh sakti hai aur substance ke saare gun dikhati hai. • Saying mass is lost when ethanol burns. The products (CO₂, water vapour) are gases that escape; the law is not broken. Ye kehna ki ethanol jalne par mass khatam hota hai. Put dilute HCl in a conical flask and zinc granules in a balloon; tie the balloon on the flask mouth and weigh everything. Tip the zinc in: bubbles of H₂ inflate the balloon. Weigh again — the reading is the same, because the hydrogen is trapped. (Without the balloon, the reading would fall as H₂ escapes.) Handle acid with care. Conical flask mein dilute HCl aur balloon mein zinc ke daane rakhiye; balloon flask ke munh par baandh kar sab tauliye. Zinc giraiye: H₂ ke bubbles balloon phulate hain. Phir tauliye — reading wahi, kyonki hydrogen band hai. (Balloon ke bina H₂ nikalne se reading ghategi.) Acid dhyan se lijiye.
