Parts and their functions
- Sodium ion, Na⁺ (सोडियम आयन, Na⁺) — In the 3-D crystal each Na⁺ is surrounded by 6 Cl⁻ ions.
- Chloride ion, Cl⁻ (क्लोराइड आयन, Cl⁻) — Each Cl⁻ is surrounded by 6 Na⁺ ions. Ions are fixed in place in the solid.
- Repeating pattern (दोहराता पैटर्न) — Ionic compounds form 3-D crystals, not separate molecules — so we use “formula unit” for them.
