Formation of sodium chloride by electron transferइलेक्ट्रॉन स्थानांतरण द्वारा सोडियम क्लोराइड का बनना
NCERT Fig 9.11–9.13 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- Sodium atom, Na (2, 8, 1) (सोडियम परमाणु, Na (2, 8, 1)) — Only 1 valence electron (red) — easier to lose it than to gain 7.
- Chlorine atom, Cl (2, 8, 7) (क्लोरीन परमाणु, Cl (2, 8, 7)) — 7 valence electrons — needs just 1 more for an octet.
- Electron transfer (इलेक्ट्रॉन स्थानांतरण) — Na’s outer electron moves to Cl.
- Sodium cation, Na⁺ (सोडियम धनायन, Na⁺) — 11 protons, 10 electrons → charge +1. Octet (2, 8).
- Chloride anion, Cl⁻ (क्लोराइड ऋणायन, Cl⁻) — 17 protons, 18 electrons → charge −1. Octet (2, 8, 8).
- Ionic bond (आयनिक आबंध) — Electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions holds Na⁺ and Cl⁻ together.
