8.1Rediscovering the roots of atomic theoryपरमाणु सिद्धांत की उत्पत्ति का पुनः अन्वेषणAtomic theory ki jadein

More than 2,000 years ago Acharya Kanada (India) said that if matter (dravya) is divided again and again, we reach particles that cannot be divided — parmanu. His ideas are in the Vaisesika Sutras; parmanus join as dyads (2) and triads (3). In Greece, Leucippus and Democritus called such particles atomos (“indivisible”). These were ideas, not experiments.2,000 से अधिक वर्ष पहले आचार्य कणाद (भारत) ने कहा कि द्रव्य को बार-बार विभाजित करने पर ऐसे कण मिलेंगे जिन्हें और विभाजित नहीं किया जा सकता — परमाणु। 2,000 saal se pehle Acharya Kanada (Bharat) ne kaha ki dravya ko baar-baar todne par aise kan milenge jo aur nahi toot sakte — parmanu. Unke vichar Vaisesika Sutras mein hain; parmanu milkar dyads (2) aur triads (3) banate hain. Greece mein Leucippus aur Democritus ne inhe atomos (“indivisible”) kaha. Ye vichar the, experiments nahi.

In 1808 John Dalton gave the first scientific atomic theory, based on experiments: all matter is made of indivisible atoms, the building blocks of matter. It became the starting point of modern atomic structure.1808 में जॉन डाल्टन ने प्रयोगों पर आधारित पहला वैज्ञानिक परमाणु सिद्धांत दिया: सारा द्रव्य अविभाज्य परमाणुओं से बना है, जो द्रव्य की मूल इकाई हैं। 1808 mein John Dalton ne experiments par based pehli scientific atomic theory di: saara dravya indivisible atoms se bana hai, jo matter ke building blocks hain. Yahi modern atomic structure ka starting point bana.

Late in the 19th century, radioactivity (some elements give out invisible radiation and particles) showed that atoms are made of still smaller particles. In 1897 J. J. Thomson passed electricity through gases at very low pressure in a tube. Rays went from the cathode (–) to the anode (+) — cathode rays. In electric and magnetic fields they behaved as negatively charged particles much lighter than atoms, later called electrons. Their nature was the same for every cathode material and every gas, so electrons are present in all atoms. Inka nature har cathode material aur har gas ke liye same tha, isliye electrons saare atoms mein hote hain. Dekhiye cathode ray tube.

8.2.1Thomson’s model of an atomटॉमसन का परमाणु मॉडलThomson ka atomic model

Atoms are neutral, so where is the positive charge? Thomson proposed the atom as a sphere of positive charge with electrons spread throughout it — the plum pudding model. Think of a watermelon: red pulp = positive charge, seeds = electrons. It was the first real attempt to show how + and – charges balance. Tap the positive sphere and the electrons. Atom neutral hain, to positive charge kahan hai? Thomson ne atom ko positive charge ka ek gola maana jisme electrons poore mein faile hain — plum pudding model. Tarbooz sochiye: laal gooda = positive charge, beej = electrons. Ye + aur – charges ka balance samjhane ki pehli asli koshish thi. Positive sphere aur electrons par tap kijiye.

Thomson model ka test: gold foil experiment

In 1911 Geiger and Marsden, working under Ernest Rutherford, fired a narrow beam of α-particles (positively charged; later known to be helium nuclei with 2 protons + 2 neutrons) at an extremely thin gold foil. Thomson’s model predicted almost no deflection. Instead: most passed straight, some turned through large angles and a few bounced back. This deflection is called scattering, so it is also the α-ray scattering experiment.1911 में गाइगर और मार्सडेन ने अर्नेस्ट रदरफोर्ड के निर्देशन में α-कणों (धनावेशित; बाद में पता चला कि ये 2 प्रोटॉन + 2 न्यूट्रॉन वाले हीलियम नाभिक हैं) की पतली किरण अत्यंत पतली स्वर्ण पर्णिका पर डाली। 1911 mein Geiger aur Marsden ne Ernest Rutherford ke under α-particles (positive charged; baad mein pata chala ki ye 2 proton + 2 neutron wale helium nucleus hain) ki patli beam bahut patli gold foil par daali. Thomson model ke hisaab se lagbhag koi deflection nahi hona chahiye tha. Par: zyadatar seedhe nikal gaye, kuch bade angle se mude aur kuch wapas laut aaye. Is deflection ko scattering kehte hain, isliye ise α-ray scattering experiment bhi kehte hain.

A. Rutherford’s model. From these results Rutherford concluded: (1) most of an atom is empty space (most α-particles went straight); (2) the positive charge and almost all the mass are packed in a tiny, dense centre — the nucleus; (3) electrons revolve around the nucleus like planets around the Sun — the planetary model. The nucleus is about 10⁵ (one lakh) times smaller than the atom: atom ≈ 10⁻¹⁰ m, nucleus ≈ 10⁻¹⁵ m. If an atom were a cricket ground (~100 m), the nucleus would be a black-pepper grain at the centre!क. Rutherford ka model. In results se Rutherford ne nishkarsh nikala: (1) atom ka zyadatar hissa khaali hai (zyadatar α-particles seedhe gaye); (2) positive charge aur lagbhag poora mass ek bahut chhote, ghane centre — nucleus — mein hai; (3) electrons nucleus ke chaaron taraf waise hi ghoomte hain jaise grah Sooraj ke — planetary model. Nucleus atom se lagbhag 10⁵ (ek lakh) guna chhota hai: atom ≈ 10⁻¹⁰ m, nucleus ≈ 10⁻¹⁵ m. Agar atom ek cricket ground (~100 m) ho to nucleus beech mein kaali mirch ke daane jitna hoga!

Worked example (NCERT “Ready to Go Beyond”)A sheet of paper 0.1 mm thick: 0.1 mm = 10⁻⁴ m. Number of atoms stacked ≈ 10⁻⁴ m ÷ 10⁻¹⁰ m = 10⁶ — about one million atoms. Worked example (NCERT “Ready to Go Beyond”)0.1 mm mota kaagaz: 0.1 mm = 10⁻⁴ m. Ek ke upar ek atoms ≈ 10⁻⁴ m ÷ 10⁻¹⁰ m = 10⁶ — lagbhag das lakh atoms.

B. Limitation of Rutherford’s model. A particle moving in a circle keeps changing direction, so it is accelerating (Ch 4). An accelerating electron should lose energy, spiral inwards and fall into the nucleus — atoms would collapse. But atoms are stable. So Rutherford’s model could not explain the stability of the atom. See the spiral path.ख. B. Rutherford model ki limitation. Circle mein ghoomta particle lagataar disha badalta hai, isliye wo accelerate karta hai (Ch 4). Accelerate karta electron energy kho kar, spiral mein andar aakar nucleus mein gir jaana chahiye — atom khatam ho jaate. Par atoms stable hain. Isliye Rutherford model atom ki stability explain nahi kar saka. Dekhiye spiral path.

C. Discovery of the proton. Rutherford showed that the positive charge of the nucleus comes from protons — much heavier than electrons, with a charge equal and opposite to that of an electron. In a neutral atom number of protons = number of electrons (helium 2 and 2, sodium 11 and 11).ग. C. Proton ki khoj. Rutherford ne dikhaya ki nucleus ka positive charge protons se aata hai — ye electron se bahut bhaari hain aur inka charge electron ke barabar aur ulta hai. Neutral atom mein protons ki sankhya = electrons ki sankhya (helium 2 aur 2, sodium 11 aur 11).

8.3What components contribute to the mass of an atom?

Electrons are so light that their mass can be ignored. But hydrogen has 1 proton and helium 2 protons, yet a helium atom is about 4 times as heavy as hydrogen, not 2 times. Something else in the nucleus adds mass without adding charge. Electrons itne halke hain ki unka mass ignore kar dete hain. Par hydrogen mein 1 proton aur helium mein 2 protons hain, phir bhi helium atom hydrogen se lagbhag 4 guna bhaari hai, 2 guna nahi. Nucleus mein kuch aur hai jo charge badhaye bina mass badhata hai.

8.3.1Discovery of the neutronन्यूट्रॉन की खोजNeutron ki khoj

In 1932 James Chadwick discovered the neutron (n) — mass nearly equal to a proton, no charge. Neutrons are in the nucleus of all atoms except ordinary hydrogen. So the mass of an atom comes mainly from its protons and neutrons. Light atoms often have equal p and n (C: 6 and 6; O: 8 and 8); heavy atoms have more neutrons (Fe: 26 p, 30 n; U: 92 p, 146 n). Neutrons reduce proton–proton repulsion and strengthen the nuclear force that holds the nucleus together.1932 में जेम्स चैडविक ने न्यूट्रॉन (n) खोजा — द्रव्यमान लगभग प्रोटॉन के बराबर, कोई आवेश नहीं। 1932 mein James Chadwick ne neutron (n) khoja — mass lagbhag proton ke barabar, koi charge nahi. Neutrons normal hydrogen ko chhodkar saare atoms ke nucleus mein hote hain. Isliye atom ka mass mainly protons aur neutrons se aata hai. Halke atoms mein aksar p aur n barabar (C: 6 aur 6; O: 8 aur 8); bhaari atoms mein neutrons zyada (Fe: 26 p, 30 n; U: 92 p, 146 n). Neutrons protons ki repulsion ghatate hain aur nucleus ko baandhne wale nuclear force ko mazboot karte hain.

Elements ke symbols

Dalton (1803) used pictorial symbols; Berzelius (1813) suggested letters from Latin names. Today IUPAC approves names and symbols. Rules: a symbol is the first one or two letters of the name; the first letter is capital, the second small (Al not AL; Co, not CO — CO is carbon monoxide!); some use another letter of the name (Cl, Zn); some come from Latin, Greek or German names: Fe (ferrum), Na (natrium), K (kalium), Cu (cuprum), Ag (argentum), Au (aurum), Pb (plumbum), Hg (hydrargyros, Greek), W (wolfram, German). About 118 elements are known today (69 were known in 1869). 8.5Atomic numberपरमाणु क्रमांकAtomic number

The number of protons in the nucleus is the atomic number, Z. It decides the identity of an element and its chemical behaviour. In a neutral atom, Z = number of protons = number of electrons. Hydrogen Z = 1, helium Z = 2, lithium Z = 3 (Fig 8.10: a lithium atom has 3 protons and 4 neutrons). Nucleus mein protons ki sankhya atomic number, Z hai. Protons and neutrons together are called nucleons. The total number of nucleons is the mass number, A. Electrons are ignored (negligible mass). 8.8Combining capacity of an atom: valencyपरमाणु की संयोजन क्षमता — संयोजकताCombining capacity: valency

Combining capacity = number of H or Cl atoms one atom combines with (both have capacity 1): O in H₂O = 2, N in NH₃ = 3, Mg in MgCl₂ = 2. The outermost shell is the valence shell; its electrons are valence electrons. 8 electrons in it = an octet. Atoms with a complete octet (or 2 for helium) are largely unreactive and stable; others lose, gain or share electrons to complete the octet. Combining capacity = ek atom jitne H ya Cl atoms se judta hai (dono ki capacity 1): H₂O mein O = 2, NH₃ mein N = 3, MgCl₂ mein Mg = 2. Sabse bahari shell valence shell hai; iske electrons valence electrons hain. Isme 8 electrons = octet. Poore octet (helium mein 2) wale atoms aksar unreactive aur stable hote hain; baaki octet poora karne ke liye electrons khote, lete ya share karte hain.

Valency = number of electrons gained, lost or shared to complete the octet. Fewer than 4 valence electrons → usually lose them (Na 2,8,1 → valency 1). More than 4 → usually gain (O 2,6 → gains 2 → valency 2). Exactly 4 → share (C 2,4 → valency 4). Noble gases (Ne, Ar) already have an octet → valency 0.संयोजकता = अष्टक पूरा करने के लिए ग्रहण किए, खोए या साझा किए गए इलेक्ट्रॉनों की संख्या। 4 से कम संयोजकता इलेक्ट्रॉन → प्रायः खोते हैं (Na 2,8,1 → संयोजकता 1)। 4 से अधिक → प्रायः ग्रहण करते हैं (O 2,6 → 2 ग्रहण → संयोजकता 2)। ठीक 4 → साझा (C 2,4 → संयोजकता 4)। उत्कृष्ट गैसों (Ne, Ar) में अष्टक पहले से पूरा → संयोजकता 0।Valency = octet poora karne ke liye liye, khoye ya share kiye electrons ki sankhya. 4 se kam valence electrons → aksar khote hain (Na 2,8,1 → valency 1). 4 se zyada → aksar lete hain (O 2,6 → 2 leta hai → valency 2). Theek 4 → share (C 2,4 → valency 4). Noble gases (Ne, Ar) mein octet pehle se poora → valency 0.

Pause & Ponder 1. A clay-and-beads “atom”: what if (i) the clay’s positive charge is less than the beads’ negative charge, (ii) the clay itself carries some negative charge? Clay-aur-beads ka “atom”: kya hoga agar (i) clay ka positive charge beads ke negative charge se kam ho, (ii) clay par hi kuch negative charge ho?
(i) Total negative > total positive, so the model has a net negative charge — it is not a neutral atom (it behaves like a negative ion). (ii) Then the clay adds more negative charge; the model is still not neutral, so it does not represent a neutral atom. A neutral atom needs total + = total −.(i) (i) Kul negative > kul positive, isliye model par net negative charge hoga — ye neutral atom nahi (negative ion jaisa). (ii) Tab clay aur negative charge jodti hai; model neutral nahi rahega. Neutral atom mein kul + = kul − hona chahiye.
Pause & Ponder 2. Could an orange or lemon (seeds in soft pulp) be a good comparison for Thomson’s model? Kya santra ya nimbu (naram gudde mein beej) Thomson model ki achhi tulna ho sakte hain?
Matches: small seeds (electrons) sit inside a large soft mass (positive sphere). Falls short: the seeds are bunched near the centre/segments, not spread evenly; there is a peel and segment walls; seeds and pulp carry no charge, so nothing shows the + and − balancing. Match: chhote beej (electrons) bade naram hisse (positive sphere) ke andar hain. Kami: beej centre/faankon mein ikatthe hain, barabar faile nahi; chhilka aur faankon ki deewarein hain; beej aur gudde par charge nahi, isliye + aur − ka balance nahi dikhta.
Pause & Ponder 3. Why did Thomson conclude that electrons are present in all atoms?
The cathode rays had the same nature whatever metal the cathode was made of and whatever gas filled the tube. So the same particles come out of every kind of atom → electrons are a basic part of all atoms. Cathode rays ka nature cathode ki metal aur tube ki gas chahe jo ho, same raha. Isliye har tarah ke atom se wahi particles nikalte hain → electrons saare atoms ka basic hissa hain.
Pause & Ponder 4. What would happen if α-particles were replaced with negatively charged particles in the gold foil experiment? Gold foil experiment mein α-particles ki jagah negative charged particles hon to kya hoga?
They would be attracted (not repelled) by the positive nucleus. Near a nucleus their paths would bend towards it and swing around it; none would be pushed straight back the way α-particles were. So the clear evidence of a small positive centre (repulsion, bounce-back) would not appear in the same way. Ye positive nucleus se attract honge (repel nahi). Nucleus ke paas inke path uski taraf mudenge aur uske chaaron taraf ghoomenge; koi α-particles ki tarah seedha peechhe nahi dhakela jaayega. Isliye chhote positive centre ka saaf saboot (repulsion, wapsi) waise nahi milega.
Pause & Ponder 5. How does a few α-particles bouncing back rule out Thomson’s plum pudding model? Kuch α-particles ka wapas lautna Thomson ke plum pudding model ko kaise galat saabit karta hai?
To turn back a fast, heavy α-particle you need a large positive charge and mass packed in a tiny space. In Thomson’s model the positive charge is spread thinly over the whole atom, so the force on an α-particle is weak everywhere — it could cause only tiny deflections, never a rebound. Even one rebound is impossible in that model. Tez, bhaari α-particle ko lautane ke liye bada positive charge aur mass bahut chhoti jagah mein chahiye. Thomson model mein positive charge poore atom mein patla faila hai, isliye force har jagah kamzor hai — bahut chhota deflection hi hoga, wapsi kabhi nahi. Us model mein ek bhi wapsi impossible hai.
Pause & Ponder 6. If you could ask Rutherford one question, what would it be? Agar aap Rutherford se ek sawaal poochh sakein to kya poochhenge?
Open answer. Example: “How did you work out that the nucleus is about 10⁵ times smaller than the atom?” — He used how rarely large deflections happened: the rarer the hits, the smaller the target. Open answer.

Pause & Ponder 7. A: Rutherford ke anusar zyadatar mass nucleus mein hai. R: Thomson model mein electrons uniform positive gole mein dhanse hain.
(ii) Both A and R are true, but R is not the explanation of A (R describes Thomson’s model, A is Rutherford’s conclusion).(ii) A और R दोनों सत्य हैं, पर R, A की सही व्याख्या नहीं (R टॉमसन मॉडल बताता है, A रदरफोर्ड का निष्कर्ष है)।(ii) A aur R dono sahi, par R, A ki sahi vyakhya nahi (R Thomson model batata hai, A Rutherford ka nishkarsh hai).

1. Gold foil experiment — which are correct? (i) showed neutrons; (ii) disproved plum pudding, led to a nucleus; (iii) large deflections → mass and + charge in a tiny centre; (iv) deflections showed electrons move around the nucleus.1. 1. Gold foil experiment — kaun se sahi? (i) neutrons dikhe; (ii) plum pudding galat, nucleus ka idea; (iii) bade deflection → mass aur + charge chhote centre mein; (iv) deflection se electrons ka ghoomna dikha.
Correct: (ii) and (iii). (ii) α-particles bouncing back cannot happen in a spread-out positive sphere, so a nucleus was proposed. (iii) Only a tiny, dense, positive centre can deflect α-particles so strongly. Wrong: (i) neutrons were discovered by Chadwick in 1932, not here. (iv) the deflections tell us about the nucleus; that electrons revolve was Rutherford’s proposal, not something the deflections showed. Sahi: (ii) aur (iii). (ii) Faile positive charge mein α-particles wapas nahi laut sakte, isliye nucleus propose hua. (iii) Sirf chhota, ghana, positive centre hi α-particles ko itna mod sakta hai. Galat: (i) neutrons Chadwick ne 1932 mein khoje. (iv) deflection nucleus ke baare mein batate hain; electrons ka ghoomna Rutherford ka proposal tha, deflection se nahi dikha.
2. Bohr’s model — correct or incorrect? (i) Electrons lose energy in fixed orbits and fall in. (ii) Electrons can be anywhere with no fixed energy. (iii) Electrons revolve in orbits of fixed energy without losing energy. (iv) Electrons can be found between energy levels.2. 2. (iii) Electrons fixed energy ke orbits mein bina energy khoye ghoomte hain. (iv) Electrons energy levels ke beech mil sakte hain.
(i) Incorrect — in a stationary state an electron does not lose energy. (ii) Incorrect — only allowed shells, each with a definite energy. (iii) Correct — this is Bohr’s main postulate. (iv) Incorrect — electrons can be only in allowed shells, not in between.(i) (i) Galat — stationary state mein electron energy nahi khota. The electrostatic attraction between the negative electrons and the positive nucleus (opposite charges attract). This attraction supplies the force needed to keep the electron moving in a circle, so it does not fly off; Bohr’s fixed shells explain why it does not fall in. Negative electrons aur positive nucleus ke beech electrostatic attraction (opposite charges attract karte hain). Yahi attraction electron ko circle mein ghumaye rakhne ka force deta hai, isliye wo door nahi jaata; Bohr ke fixed shells batate hain ki wo andar kyon nahi girta.

10. Both models have orbiting electrons. Why did Rutherford’s fail to explain stability while Bohr’s succeeded?10. Dono models mein electrons ghoomte hain. Rutherford ka model stability kyon nahi samjha saka aur Bohr ka kyon?
In Rutherford’s model an orbiting electron is accelerating, so it should keep losing energy and spiral into the nucleus — atoms would collapse. Bohr postulated stationary states: in an allowed shell the electron’s energy stays constant, so it does not lose energy or fall in. Energy changes only when it jumps between shells. Rutherford model mein ghoomta electron accelerate karta hai, isliye use lagataar energy kho kar nucleus mein girna chahiye — atom khatam hote.
