Life on Earth runs on a constant flow of energy and matter. The Sun is the main energy source; the Earth’s hot interior and chemical reactions in air, water and rocks add more. This chapter treats the Earth as one system of interacting spheres: geosphere (rocks, soil, landforms like the Deccan plateau, the interior), hydrosphere (oceans, rivers like the Ganga–Brahmaputra, lakes, groundwater), cryosphere (ice and snow — Himalayan glaciers, polar caps), atmosphere (air) and biosphere (all living things and habitats — mangroves, forests, farms, plankton, coral reefs). Solar radiation reaches us as electromagnetic (EM) waves, which need no medium and travel at 3 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ in vacuum (sound, in contrast, is a mechanical wave). The EM spectrum runs from high-frequency, short-wavelength gamma rays and X-rays to low-frequency, long-wavelength infrared, microwaves and radio waves. About 99% of the Sun’s energy is in UV, visible and IR. Gamma and X-rays are filtered by the upper atmosphere; most UV is absorbed by the ozone layer; visible light drives photosynthesis and partly warms land and water; IR warms the surface, which re-radiates heat — part of it is trapped by greenhouse gases (CO₂, CH₄, water vapour), keeping Earth warm enough for life. Tap UV. Solar radiation electromagnetic (EM) waves ki tarah aata hai, jinhe medium nahi chahiye aur vacuum mein 3 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ se chalti hain (sound ulta mechanical wave hai). The solar constant = average solar energy received per second per square metre (perpendicular to the rays) at the top of the atmosphere ≈ 1.4 kW m⁻² = 1400 J s⁻¹ m⁻². Gases, clouds and dust absorb and scatter some of it, so maximum insolation at the surface on a clear day is only about 1 kW m⁻². India, in the tropical/sub-tropical belt, gets abundant sunlight — it drives the monsoon and gives huge solar-power potential. Anna Mani mapped India’s insolation in the 1950s and, with S. Rangarajan, published Solar Radiation Over India (1982), the country’s first insolation atlas. Insolation = dharti ki surface tak pahunchne wala solar radiation. 13.1.1Interaction with the surface — albedoसतह से अन्योन्यक्रिया — ऐल्बिडोSurface ke saath — albedo
Incoming sunlight is partly reflected by the atmosphere and clouds, partly reflected by the surface, partly absorbed by the atmosphere and partly absorbed by the ground. Dark surfaces absorb more and heat faster (dark roads, dark clothes); light ones reflect more and stay cooler. Albedo = the fraction of solar radiation a surface reflects (Latin albedo = whiteness). Snow 0.80–0.90, ice 0.50–0.70, crushed rock 0.25–0.30, while black soil and ocean water have low albedo (about 0.1 or less), so they warm more. High-albedo snow and ice keep polar regions very cold. Tap snow. Aane wali dhoop ka kuch hissa atmosphere aur baadal reflect karte hain, kuch surface reflect karti hai, kuch atmosphere sokhta hai aur kuch zameen. Albedo = surface dwara reflect hua solar radiation ka hissa (Latin albedo = safedi). Snow 0.80–0.90, ice 0.50–0.70, crushed rock 0.25–0.30, jabki kaali mitti aur samudri paani ka albedo kam (lagbhag 0.1 ya kam) hai, isliye wo zyada garam hote hain. Urban heat island: cities (steel, concrete, brick, asphalt; little greenery) absorb and retain heat and stay warmer than nearby villages and forests, especially in summer nights — raising AC demand. Vegetation keeps rural areas cool through shade and transpiration. Har cheez garmi chhodti hai: concrete ka ghar raat mein garam lagta hai kyunki concrete jama garmi wapas chhodta hai, jabki moti mitti-lakdi ki deewarein thandi rehti hain. 13.1.2Latitude and the Earth’s shapeअक्षांश और पृथ्वी की आकृतिLatitude aur dharti ka aakaar
Because the Earth is a sphere, the Sun’s rays hit different latitudes at different angles. Near the equator the rays are nearly vertical, so the same energy falls on a smaller area — it stays warm all year. Near the poles the rays are slanting and spread over a larger area — much colder. The tilt of the axis adds seasons and changing day length. This uneven heating between equator and poles drives global winds and ocean currents. Dharti gol hai, isliye Sun ki rays alag latitudes par alag angle se padti hain. Equator ke paas rays lagbhag seedhi hoti hain, to wahi energy kam area par padti hai — saal bhar garam. Poles ke paas rays tirchhi hokar zyada area par phailti hain — bahut thanda. Equator aur poles ke beech ye asmaan heating global hawayein aur ocean currents chalati hai.
13.1.3Role of the atmosphereवायुमंडल की भूमिकाAtmosphere ka role
The atmosphere is held by gravity: about 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, plus argon, CO₂, water vapour and other gases. Layers: troposphere (0–12 km on average; highest over the equator, lowest over the poles) — nearly all weather; heated from the ground, temperature falls ~6.5 °C per km. Stratosphere (12–50 km) — the ozone layer absorbs UV, so temperature rises with height; this calm layer has little vertical mixing, keeping weather in the troposphere. Above: mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere (minor role in surface climate); outer space starts at about 100 km. Tap the stratosphere. Atmosphere gravity se tika hai: lagbhag 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, saath mein argon, CO₂, paani ki bhaap aur baaki gases. Layers: troposphere (average 0–12 km; equator par sabse ooncha, poles par sabse neecha) — lagbhag saara mausam; zameen se garam hota hai, oonchai ke saath taapmaan ~6.5 °C per km ghatta hai. Stratosphere (12–50 km) — ozone layer UV sokhti hai, isliye oonchai ke saath taapmaan badhta hai; is shaant layer mein upar-neeche mixing kam hai, isliye mausam troposphere tak rehta hai. Upar: mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere (surface climate mein chhota role); space lagbhag 100 km se shuru. Stratosphere par tap kijiye.
Layers of the atmosphereवायुमंडल की परतेंLayers of the atmosphereNCERT Fig 13.7 · 6 tappable partsOpenTwo protective roles: (1) it partly absorbs incoming radiation — ozone blocks harmful UV, clouds and gases absorb some sunlight; (2) it traps outgoing heat — the surface re-radiates in the infrared and greenhouse gases (CO₂, CH₄, water vapour) absorb it. Without an atmosphere Earth would be too cold for life; but excess CO₂ from human activity enhances the greenhouse effect → global warming. Venus is hotter than Mercury though farther from the Sun — its thick CO₂ atmosphere causes a runaway greenhouse effect. K.R. Ramanathan climbed to 18,000 ft in the Himalayas (1934) to measure ozone and later led early monsoon forecasting. Ozone hole: CFCs (refrigerators, aerosols) thinned ozone over Antarctica; the Montreal Protocol cut CFCs and the layer is slowly recovering. Do protective roles: (1) ye aane wale radiation ka kuch hissa sokhta hai — ozone nuksaandeh UV rokti hai, baadal aur gases kuch dhoop sokhte hain; (2) ye bahar jaane wali garmi rokta hai — surface infrared mein garmi chhodti hai aur greenhouse gases (CO₂, CH₄, bhaap) use sokh leti hain. Atmosphere ke bina dharti jeevan ke liye bahut thandi hoti; par insaan ki activities se extra CO₂ greenhouse effect badhati hai → global warming. Venus, Mercury se zyada garam hai jabki Sun se door hai — uska ghana CO₂ atmosphere runaway greenhouse effect banata hai. K.R. Ramanathan ne 1934 mein Himalaya mein 18,000 feet chadh kar ozone naapi aur baad mein monsoon forecasting shuru karwayi. Ozone hole: CFCs (fridge, aerosol) ne Antarctica ke upar ozone patli ki; Montreal Protocol ne CFCs ghataye aur layer dheere-dheere theek ho rahi hai.

Wind = air moving from high pressure to low pressure; the pressure differences come mainly from uneven heating. Local winds (13.2.1): by day the sun-facing mountain slopes heat faster than the valley floor; warm air over the slopes rises (low pressure) and cooler valley air moves up the slope — valley breeze. After sunset the slopes cool faster; cold, dense air flows down into the valley — mountain breeze. Common in Shimla, Dehradun and other Himalayan valleys; they regulate temperature and moisture and support soil and crop health. Tap valley breeze.पवन = उच्च दाब से निम्न दाब की ओर चलती वायु; दाब-अंतर मुख्यतः असमान तापन से बनते हैं। स्थानीय पवनें (13.2.1): दिन में सूर्य की ओर की पर्वत ढलानें घाटी के तल से जल्दी गर्म होती हैं; ढलानों की गर्म वायु ऊपर उठती है (निम्न दाब) और घाटी की ठंडी वायु ढलान पर ऊपर चढ़ती है — घाटी समीर। सूर्यास्त के बाद ढलानें जल्दी ठंडी होती हैं; ठंडी, सघन वायु घाटी में नीचे बहती है — पर्वत समीर। शिमला, देहरादून और अन्य हिमालयी घाटियों में आम; ये ताप व नमी नियंत्रित कर मिट्टी और फ़सलों के स्वास्थ्य में सहायक हैं। घाटी समीर पर टैप कीजिए।Hawa (wind) = high pressure se low pressure ki taraf chalti hawa; pressure ka fark mainly asmaan garmi se banta hai. Local winds (13.2.1): din mein Sun ki taraf wali pahaadi dhalaanein ghaati ke tal se jaldi garam hoti hain; dhalaan ki garam hawa upar uthti hai (low pressure) aur ghaati ki thandi hawa dhalaan par upar chadhti hai — valley breeze. Sooraj doobne ke baad dhalaanein jaldi thandi hoti hain; thandi bhaari hawa ghaati mein neeche behti hai — mountain breeze. Part of the sinking air moves poleward and rises near 60° N and S where it meets cold polar air → sub-polar low-pressure belts. Near the poles (90°) cold dense air sinks → polar highs. The Earth’s rotation deflects winds — to the right in the Northern and left in the Southern Hemisphere — so they follow curved paths.ग्रहीय पवनें (13.2.2): भूमध्य रेखा पर तीव्र तापन से वायु ऊपर उठती है → विषुवतीय निम्न दाब पेटी; ऊपर यह ध्रुवों की ओर जाती, ठंडी होकर 30° उ. और द. के पास नीचे उतरती है → उपोष्ण उच्च दाब पेटियाँ; वहाँ से सतह पर वायु भूमध्य रेखा की ओर लौटती है (एक परिसंचरण कोष्ठ)। उतरती वायु का कुछ भाग ध्रुवों की ओर जाकर 60° उ. और द. के पास ठंडी ध्रुवीय वायु से मिलकर ऊपर उठता है → उपध्रुवीय निम्न दाब पेटियाँ। ध्रुवों (90°) पर ठंडी सघन वायु नीचे उतरती है → ध्रुवीय उच्च दाब। पृथ्वी का घूर्णन पवनों को विक्षेपित करता है — उत्तरी गोलार्ध में दाईं ओर, दक्षिणी में बाईं ओर — इसलिए वे वक्र पथ पर चलती हैं।Planetary winds (13.2.2): equator par tez garmi se hawa upar uthti hai → equatorial low pressure belt; upar ye poles ki taraf jaati, thandi hokar 30° N aur S ke paas neeche utarti hai → sub-tropical high pressure belts; wahan se surface par hawa equator ki taraf lautti hai (ek circulation cell). Utarti hawa ka kuch hissa poles ki taraf jaakar 60° N aur S ke paas thandi polar hawa se milkar upar uthta hai → sub-polar low pressure belts. Poles (90°) par thandi bhaari hawa neeche utarti hai → polar high. Dharti ka rotation hawaon ko mod deta hai — Northern Hemisphere mein right, Southern mein left — isliye wo curved raste par chalti hain.
Ocean currents (13.2.3): continuous movement of large masses of ocean water. Planetary winds drag surface water by friction; temperature and salinity differences, the Earth’s rotation and continents also steer them. Warm equatorial water flows over the surface towards the poles; colder, denser water returns at depth. Less salty water (less dense) stays near the surface; saltier, denser water sinks. Rotation bends currents into gyres — clockwise in the Northern, anticlockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. Currents carry heat from equator to poles, evening out temperatures: the warm North Atlantic Drift (extension of the Gulf Stream) keeps north-west European ports ice-free in winter. They also transport nutrients for huge ocean ecosystems. IITM Pune runs coupled atmosphere–ocean–land–ice models (with satellite, Indian Ocean buoy and Antarctic data) to forecast the monsoon. Ocean currents (13.2.3): samudri paani ke bade hisson ki lagatar movement. Planetary winds friction se surface ka paani kheenchti hain; taapmaan aur salinity ka fark, dharti ka rotation aur continents bhi disha tay karte hain. Living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) parts constantly exchange matter and energy across the spheres. This cyclic movement is a biogeochemical cycle; it keeps carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and water recycled and available, and helps ecosystems recover from disturbance. Living (biotic) aur non-living (abiotic) hisse spheres ke beech lagatar matter aur energy lete-dete hain. 13.3.1Water cycleजल चक्रWater cycle
Water evaporates from oceans, rivers and lakes (and transpires from plants), condenses into clouds, returns as precipitation (rain, hail, snow), and flows back to the ocean as run-off; some infiltrates to recharge groundwater. Water dissolves minerals and carries nutrients to the oceans. Climate change: a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture → heavier rain in some places (intense monsoons), drought elsewhere; melting glaciers raise sea level (threat to Mumbai, Chennai); sudden heavy rain → more run-off, soil erosion, less groundwater recharge → harder farming in dry months. The cycle links cryosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, geosphere and biosphere. Tap infiltration. Paani samudra, nadiyon aur jheelon se evaporate hota hai (aur paudhon se transpire), baadalon mein condense hota hai, precipitation (baarish, ole, barf) ban kar lautta hai aur run-off ban kar samudra mein wapas jaata hai; kuch infiltrate hokar groundwater bharta hai. Paani minerals ghol kar nutrients samudra tak le jaata hai. Climate change: garam atmosphere zyada nami rakhta hai → kahin bhaari baarish (tez monsoon), kahin sookha; pighalte glaciers sea level badhate hain (Mumbai, Chennai ko khatra); achanak bhaari baarish → zyada run-off, mitti ka katav, kam groundwater recharge → sookhe mahino mein kheti mushkil. Carbon is the backbone of life (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, DNA). It moves between the atmosphere (CO₂), biosphere (organisms), geosphere (carbonate rocks, fossil fuels) and hydrosphere (dissolved CO₂, marine shells). Fast cycle (days–years): photosynthesis turns CO₂ into glucose; respiration and decomposition return CO₂. Slow cycle (millions of years): buried dead organisms become coal, oil and gas — burning them releases that carbon as CO₂ almost instantly. The ocean absorbs CO₂ to form carbonate and bicarbonate ions used by phytoplankton and shell-makers; dead organisms sink and store carbon. Carbon ≈ 49% of the dry weight of organisms; oceans hold 71% of global carbon, the atmosphere only about 1%. Tap photosynthesis. Carbon jeevan ki reedh hai (protein, carbohydrate, fat, DNA). India is rapidly adding renewable energy. Keeling curve (Fig 13.14) lagatar badhta hai aur har saal aari jaise daante dikhata hai — northern garmi mein paudhe CO₂ sokhte hain to ye ghatti hai. Bharat tezi se renewable energy badha raha hai.
13.3.3Nitrogen cycleनाइट्रोजन चक्रNitrogen cycle
Nitrogen is needed for proteins and nucleic acids. The atmosphere is the largest reservoir, but N₂ is unreactive and must be converted. Steps: nitrogen fixation — Rhizobium (root nodules of legumes) and Azotobacter (soil) turn N₂ into ammonia (NH₃); lightning also fixes a little as nitrogen oxides. Nitrification — Nitrosomonas: ammonia → nitrite (NO₂⁻); Nitrobacter: nitrite → nitrate (NO₃⁻). Assimilation — plants absorb these; animals get nitrogen by eating. Ammonification — decomposers (bacteria, fungi) return ammonia from dead matter and wastes. Denitrification — Pseudomonas turns nitrates back into N₂. Tap nitrogen fixation. Nitrogen protein aur nucleic acids ke liye zaroori hai. About 21% of the air is free O₂; oxygen is also in carbohydrates, proteins, nucleic acids and fats, in metal oxides and minerals of the crust, and in CO₂. Consumption: respiration (plants and animals) and combustion of fuels use O₂ and release CO₂. Production: photosynthesis uses sunlight, water and CO₂ to make glucose and release O₂. This balance circulates oxygen among air, land, oceans and organisms. Hawa ka lagbhag 21% free O₂ hai; oxygen carbohydrate, protein, nucleic acid aur fat mein, crust ke metal oxides aur minerals mein aur CO₂ mein bhi hai.
