All organisms, even the largest, start life from a single cell. Growth and reproduction depend on cell division — the parent cell divides into two daughter cells, which grow and divide again. The sequence of events by which a cell duplicates its genome, synthesises other cell constituents and finally divides into two is the cell cycle. Har jeev ek cell se shuru. Growth aur reproduction = cell division. Genome copy + baaki parts banana + do mein batna = cell cycle.
10.1Cell cycleकोशिका चक्रCell cycle
DNA synthesis occurs only in one specific stage, but cell growth (cytoplasmic increase) is continuous. Replicated chromosomes are then distributed to daughter nuclei by a complex series of events under genetic control.DNA DNA sirf ek stage (S) mein banta, growth lagataar. Chromosomes ka batwara genetic control mein.
Cell cycle ke phases
Human cells in culture divide about once every 24 hours; yeast can complete the cycle in about 90 minutes. The cycle has two basic phases — interphase and M phase (mitosis phase). In the 24-hour human cycle, division proper lasts only about an hour; interphase lasts more than 95% of the cycle. M phase starts with karyokinesis (nuclear division, separation of daughter chromosomes) and usually ends with cytokinesis (division of cytoplasm). M phase, interphase. Human cell ~24 ghante, yeast ~90 min. Do phases: interphase + M phase. Division sirf ~1 ghanta; interphase >95%. M phase = karyokinesis (nucleus) + cytokinesis (cytoplasm). M phase, interphase.
Interphase is called the resting phase, but it is the time when the cell prepares for division by growth and DNA replication in an orderly way. It has three phases: G₁ (Gap 1) — between mitosis and the start of DNA replication; the cell is metabolically active and grows continuously but does not replicate its DNA. S (synthesis) phase — DNA replication: DNA per cell doubles from 2C to 4C, but the chromosome number does not increase (2n stays 2n). In animal cells DNA replication begins in the nucleus and the centriole duplicates in the cytoplasm. G₂ (Gap 2) — proteins are synthesised in preparation for mitosis while growth continues. Interphase "resting" kehlata par cell taiyari karta. G₁ — growth, DNA copy nahi. S — DNA 2C → 4C, chromosomes 2n hi; animal cell mein centriole double. G₂ — mitosis ke liye proteins bante.
Some cells in adult animals do not divide (e.g. heart cells), many others divide only occasionally to replace cells lost by injury or death. Cells that do not divide further exit G₁ to an inactive stage called the quiescent stage (G₀); they stay metabolically active but no longer proliferate unless called on to do so. In animals mitosis is seen only in diploid somatic cells; in plants mitosis occurs in both haploid and diploid cells. G₀. G₀।Kuch cells divide nahi karte (jaise heart cells) → G₁ se G₀ (quiescent) mein, active rehte par divide nahi. Animals mein mitosis sirf diploid somatic cells mein; plants mein haploid + diploid dono. G₀.
10.2M phaseM अवस्थाM phase
M phase is the most dramatic period of the cycle, involving major reorganisation of virtually all cell components. Parent and progeny cells have the same number of chromosomes, so it is also called equational division. Mitosis is divided into four stages of nuclear division (karyokinesis); it is a continuous process and the stages are not sharply separated. M phase mein sab kuch re-organise. Parent aur daughter cells mein same chromosomes → equational division. 4 stages, continuous process. 3D cell division3D.
Prophase
Follows the S and G₂ phases of interphase (new DNA molecules are not distinct but intertwined). Marked by the start of condensation of chromosomal material; chromosomes become untangled, each made of two chromatids attached at the centromere. The centrosome, which duplicated in interphase, begins moving towards opposite poles; each centrosome radiates microtubules called asters; the two asters with spindle fibres form the mitotic apparatus. By the end of prophase, Golgi complexes, ER, nucleolus and nuclear envelope are not seen. Prophase. Chromosomes condense, har ek = 2 chromatids + centromere. Centrosome poles ki taraf, asters + spindle = mitotic apparatus. End tak Golgi, ER, nucleolus, nuclear envelope gayab. Prophase.
Metaphase
Starts with complete disintegration of the nuclear envelope; chromosomes spread through the cytoplasm. Condensation is complete, so chromosomes can be clearly seen — this is the stage at which chromosome morphology is most easily studied. Each chromosome has two sister chromatids held at the centromere; small disc-shaped kinetochores on the centromere are the attachment sites of spindle fibres. Chromosomes are moved to the spindle equator and lie on the metaphase plate, one chromatid connected to fibres from one pole and the sister to the opposite pole. Metaphase plate, spindle fibres. Nuclear envelope poora khatam. Condensation complete → morphology study ke liye best stage. Kinetochore par spindle fibres. Chromosomes metaphase plate par line. Metaphase plate, spindle fibres.
Anaphase
Each chromosome on the metaphase plate splits simultaneously — the centromeres split and the chromatids separate, becoming daughter chromosomes of future nuclei, and they migrate towards the two opposite poles. As each chromosome moves away from the plate, the centromere leads towards the pole and the arms trail behind. Anaphase. Centromere split, chromatids alag → daughter chromosomes opposite poles ki taraf; centromere aage, arms peeche. Anaphase.
Telophase
Chromosomes that reached their poles decondense and lose their individuality; chromosomes cluster at the poles; nuclear envelope develops around each cluster forming two daughter nuclei; nucleolus, Golgi complex and ER reform. Telophase. Poles par chromosomes decondense, 2 daughter nuclei, nucleolus, Golgi, ER wapas. Telophase.
Cytokinesis
Mitosis (karyokinesis) divides the duplicated chromosomes into daughter nuclei; the cell itself is divided by a separate process, cytokinesis. In an animal cell a furrow appears in the plasma membrane and gradually deepens until it joins in the centre, dividing the cytoplasm into two. Plant cells are enclosed by a relatively inextensible cell wall, so cytokinesis is different: wall formation starts in the centre of the cell and grows outward to meet the existing lateral walls. New wall formation begins with a simple precursor, the cell plate, which represents the middle lamella. Organelles like mitochondria and plastids are distributed between the two daughter cells. In some organisms karyokinesis is not followed by cytokinesis, giving a multinucleate condition — a syncytium (e.g. liquid endosperm in coconut). Furrow, cell plate. Cytoplasm ka batwara = cytokinesis. Animal: furrow bahar se andar. Plant: wall ke kaaran cell plate beech se bahar → middle lamella. Organelles bant-te. Bina cytokinesis → syncytium (nariyal ka liquid endosperm). Furrow, cell plate.
Mitosis ka mahatva
Mitosis (equational division) is usually restricted to diploid cells; but in some lower plants and some social insects haploid cells also divide by mitosis. Mitosis produces diploid daughter cells with identical genetic complement. Uses: growth of multicellular organisms; restoring the nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio (a growing cell divides when this ratio is disturbed); cell repair — cells of the upper layer of the epidermis, the lining of the gut and blood cells are constantly replaced; mitotic divisions in meristematic tissues — apical and lateral cambium — give continuous growth of plants throughout their life. Mitosis zyadatar diploid cells mein; lower plants aur social insects mein haploid bhi. Same genetic daughter cells. Kaam: growth, nucleo-cytoplasmic ratio theek, repair (skin, gut lining, blood cells), meristem se plants ki lifelong growth.
Meiosis
Production of offspring by sexual reproduction involves fusion of two haploid gametes. Gametes are formed from diploid cells by a special division, meiosis, which reduces the chromosome number by half — haploid daughter cells. Meiosis gives the haploid phase in the life cycle and fertilisation restores the diploid phase. It occurs during gametogenesis in plants and animals. Key features: (1) two sequential cycles of nuclear and cell division — meiosis I and meiosis II — but only a single cycle of DNA replication; (2) meiosis I starts after the parental chromosomes have replicated to form identical sister chromatids at S phase; (3) it involves pairing of homologous chromosomes and recombination between non-sister chromatids; (4) four haploid cells form at the end of meiosis II. Four haploid cells. Gametes banane ke liye meiosis — chromosome number aadha. Gametogenesis mein. 2 divisions (I, II), DNA replication sirf ek baar; homologous pairing + recombination; end mein 4 haploid cells. 4 haploid cells.
10.4.1Meiosis Iअर्धसूत्री विभाजन IMeiosis I
Prophase I is longer and more complex than prophase of mitosis; it has five phases: Leptotene, Zygotene, Pachytene, Diplotene and Diakinesis. Leptotene — chromosomes become gradually visible under the light microscope; compaction continues. Zygotene — chromosomes start pairing together — synapsis; paired chromosomes are homologous chromosomes; synapsis is accompanied by a synaptonemal complex; the synapsed pair is a bivalent or tetrad. Pachytene — the four chromatids of each bivalent become distinct as tetrads; recombination nodules appear — the sites of crossing over between non-sister chromatids of homologous chromosomes; crossing over is an enzyme-mediated process (enzyme recombinase) and leads to recombination of genetic material; it is completed by the end of pachytene, leaving the chromosomes linked at the crossover sites. Diplotene — the synaptonemal complex dissolves and the homologues of the bivalents separate except at the crossover sites; these X-shaped structures are chiasmata; in oocytes of some vertebrates diplotene can last for months or years. Diakinesis — terminalisation of chiasmata; chromosomes fully condensed; the meiotic spindle is assembled; by its end the nucleolus disappears and the nuclear envelope breaks down — a transition to metaphase. Chiasma, bivalent. Prophase I ke 5 stages: Leptotene (chromosomes dikhne lagte), Zygotene (synapsis, synaptonemal complex, bivalent/tetrad), Pachytene (crossing over non-sister chromatids, recombination nodules, enzyme recombinase), Diplotene (chiasmata X-shape; oocytes mein saalon tak), Diakinesis (terminalisation, spindle, nuclear envelope tootta). Chiasma, bivalent.
Metaphase I — the bivalent chromosomes align on the equatorial plate; microtubules from opposite poles attach to the pair of homologous chromosomes. Anaphase I — the homologous chromosomes separate, while sister chromatids remain associated at their centromeres. Telophase I — nuclear membrane and nucleolus reappear, cytokinesis follows — a dyad of cells. The stage between the two meiotic divisions is interkinesis; it is generally short-lived and has no DNA replication; it is followed by prophase II, a much simpler prophase. Metaphase I — bivalents equator par. Anaphase I — homologues alag, sister chromatids jude rehte. Telophase I — dyad. Beech mein interkinesis — DNA replication nahi.
10.4.2Meiosis IIअर्धसूत्री विभाजन IIMeiosis II
Prophase II starts immediately after cytokinesis, usually before the chromosomes fully elongate; the nuclear membrane disappears and chromosomes become compact again. Metaphase II — chromosomes align at the equator; microtubules from opposite poles attach to the kinetochores of sister chromatids. Anaphase II — simultaneous splitting of the centromere of each chromosome (which was holding the sister chromatids together), so the chromatids move to opposite poles by shortening of microtubules attached to kinetochores. Telophase II — the two groups of chromosomes are again enclosed by a nuclear envelope; cytokinesis follows, forming a tetrad of cells — four haploid daughter cells. Meiosis II resembles a normal mitosis. Prophase II turant; Metaphase II chromosomes equator par; Anaphase II centromere split, chromatids alag; Telophase II → 4 haploid cells (tetrad). Meiosis II = mitosis jaisa.
Meiosis ka mahatva
Meiosis is the mechanism by which the specific chromosome number of each species is conserved across generations in sexually reproducing organisms, even though the process itself results in reduction of chromosome number by half. It also increases genetic variability in the population from one generation to the next. Variations are very important for the process of evolution. Meiosis se har species ka chromosome number peedhi dar peedhi same rehta (aadha hokar fertilisation mein wapas). Genetic variation badhata → evolution ke liye zaroori.
