Parts and their functions
- Prophase (पूर्वावस्था) — Chromosomes condense; spindle starts forming; nuclear envelope and nucleolus disappear.
- Metaphase (मध्यावस्था) — Best stage to study chromosome morphology — chromosomes lie on the equator.
- Anaphase (पश्चावस्था) — Centromeres split; daughter chromatids move to opposite poles.
- Telophase (अंत्यावस्था) — Two daughter nuclei form; chromosomes lose their identity as chromatin.
- Spindle fibres (तर्कु तंतु) — Microtubules from the poles attach to kinetochores at the centromeres.
- Metaphase plate (मध्यावस्था पट्टिका) — The plane of alignment of chromosomes at metaphase.
