5.1What are life processes?

We usually take movement (even molecular movement inside cells) as a sign of life. Living bodies must keep repairing and maintaining their structures, even when they seem to be doing nothing. The processes that together do this maintenance job are life processes: nutrition, respiration, transportation and excretion. Hum aksar movement (cells ke andar molecular movement bhi) ko life ka sign maante hain. Living body ko apni structures ki lagataar repair aur maintenance karni padti hai, tab bhi jab wo kuch karta na dikhe. Ye maintenance karne wale saare processes life processes hain: nutrition, respiration, transportation aur excretion.

Nutrition (Poshan)

All organisms need energy and materials, but they get them in different ways. Autotrophs (green plants and some bacteria) make food from simple inorganic substances — carbon dioxide and water. Heterotrophs (animals and fungi) use complex substances made by others and break them down with bio-catalysts called enzymes. So heterotrophs depend directly or indirectly on autotrophs. Sab jeevon ko energy aur materials chahiye, par wo inhe alag-alag tareeke se paate hain. Autotrophs (hare paudhe aur kuch bacteria) simple inorganic padarthon — carbon dioxide aur paani — se khana banate hain. Heterotrophs (jaanwar aur fungi) doosron ke banaye complex padarth lete hain aur unhe bio-catalysts, enzymes, se todte hain. Isliye heterotrophs seedhe ya indirectly autotrophs par nirbhar hain.

In photosynthesis, autotrophs take in carbon dioxide and water and convert them into carbohydrates in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. Carbohydrates not used immediately are stored as starch — the plant's internal energy reserve (we store energy as glycogen). Photosynthesis mein autotrophs carbon dioxide aur paani lekar sunlight aur chlorophyll ki maujoodgi mein unhe carbohydrates mein badalte hain. Turant use na hone wale carbohydrates starch ke roop mein jama hote hain — paudhe ka andar ka energy store (hum energy glycogen ke roop mein rakhte hain).

3 events of photosynthesis(i) Absorption of light energy by chlorophyll.
(ii) Conversion of light energy to chemical energy, and splitting of water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen.
(iii) Reduction of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates.
These need not happen one right after the other: desert plants take in CO₂ at night and make an intermediate that is used in the day with the energy absorbed by chlorophyll.
Photosynthesis ke 3 steps(i) Chlorophyll dwara light energy absorb karna.
(ii) Light energy ko chemical energy mein badalna aur paani ke molecules ko hydrogen aur oxygen mein todna.
(iii) Carbon dioxide ko carbohydrates mein reduce karna.
Ye ek ke turant baad ek hona zaroori nahi: desert plants raat mein CO₂ lete hain aur ek intermediate banate hain, jis par din mein chlorophyll ki absorb ki hui energy kaam karti hai.

Green dots in leaf cells are chloroplasts, which contain chlorophyll. NCERT Activity 5.1 (variegated leaf + starch test with iodine) shows that chlorophyll is essential for photosynthesis, and Activity 5.2 (with KOH absorbing CO₂) shows that carbon dioxide is essential. Patti ki cells mein hare dots chloroplasts hain, jinme chlorophyll hota hai. Gases are exchanged mainly through stomata — tiny pores on the surface of leaves. Since a lot of water is also lost through them, the plant closes them when CO₂ is not needed. Opening and closing is done by guard cells: they swell when water flows in → pore opens; they shrink when water flows out → pore closes. See the leaf in 3D (leaf section). Gases ka exchange mainly stomata — patti ki surface ke chhote chhed — se hota hai. Human respiratory system: air enters through the nostrils (fine hairs and mucus filter it), passes the throat into the trachea (rings of cartilage stop it from collapsing), then the bronchi and bronchioles, ending in balloon-like alveoli, whose walls have an extensive network of blood vessels. Double circulation — why separate the two bloods? In humans, blood goes through the heart twice in each cycle — double circulation. Keeping oxygenated and deoxygenated blood separate gives a highly efficient supply of oxygen. This is needed by animals with high energy needs, like birds and mammals, which constantly use energy to maintain body temperature. Amphibians and many reptiles have three-chambered hearts and tolerate some mixing; fishes have a two-chambered heart and blood passes through the heart only once per cycle. Double circulation — dono blood alag kyon?Insaanon mein har cycle mein blood heart se do baar guzarta hai — double circulation. Oxygen wala aur bina oxygen wala blood alag rakhne se oxygen supply bahut efficient hoti hai. Ye zyada energy wale jaanwaron — birds aur mammals — ke liye zaroori hai, jo body temperature banaye rakhne mein lagataar energy kharch karte hain. Amphibians aur kai reptiles ka heart teen chambers wala hota hai aur thoda mixing seh lete hain; machhliyon ka heart do chambers wala hai aur blood har cycle mein heart se sirf ek baar guzarta hai.
Blood pressureThe force blood exerts against a vessel wall. Normal: systolic about 120 mm of Hg (ventricles contracting) and diastolic 80 mm of Hg (ventricles relaxing). Measured with a sphygmomanometer. High blood pressure (hypertension) is caused by constriction of arterioles and can lead to rupture of an artery and internal bleeding. Blood pressureBlood dwara vessel ki deewar par lagaya gaya force. Paudhon mein transport

Plants have two conducting tissues: xylem moves water and minerals from the soil; phloem moves products of photosynthesis from the leaves to other parts. In xylem, vessels and tracheids of roots, stems and leaves are interconnected into a continuous channel. Root cells actively take up ions, so water from the soil moves into the root. Transpiration — loss of water vapour from the aerial parts — creates a suction that pulls water up; it also helps in temperature regulation. Root pressure matters more at night; in the day, with stomata open, transpiration pull is the major force. Paudhon mein do conducting tissues hain: xylem mitti se paani aur minerals le jaata hai; phloem pattiyon se photosynthesis ke products baaki hisson tak le jaata hai. Xylem mein jad, tane aur pattiyon ki vessels aur tracheids judkar ek lagataar channel banati hain. Jad ki cells actively ions leti hain, isliye mitti ka paani jad mein aata hai. Transpiration — upar ke hisson se paani ki bhaap nikalna — ek suction banata hai jo paani ko upar kheenchta hai; ye temperature control mein bhi madad karta hai. Raat mein root pressure zyada important hai; din mein stomata khule hone par transpiration pull main force hai.

Translocation in phloem moves sucrose, amino acids and other substances through sieve tubes with the help of companion cells, both upward and downward. Unlike xylem, it uses energy: sucrose is loaded into phloem using ATP, which raises the osmotic pressure, water moves in, and this pressure pushes the material to tissues with less pressure (for example storage organs or growing buds in spring). Phloem mein translocation sucrose, amino acids waghairah ko sieve tubes se companion cells ki madad se upar aur neeche dono taraf le jaata hai. Xylem se alag, isme energy lagti hai: ATP se sucrose phloem mein bheja jaata hai, osmotic pressure badhta hai, paani andar aata hai, aur ye pressure material ko kam pressure wale tissues (jaise storage organs ya basant mein badhti kaliyan) tak dhakelta hai.

Excretion (Utsarjan)

The biological process of removing harmful metabolic wastes (especially nitrogenous wastes) from the body is excretion. Many unicellular organisms remove wastes by simple diffusion into the surrounding water; complex organisms use special organs. Body se harmful metabolic waste (khaas kar nitrogenous waste) nikalne ka biological process excretion hai. The excretory system has a pair of kidneys (in the abdomen, one on either side of the backbone), a pair of ureters, a urinary bladder and a urethra. Urine made in the kidneys passes through the ureters into the bladder, where it is stored until the pressure of the expanded bladder gives the urge to pass it out through the urethra. The bladder is muscular and under nervous control. Structure of a nephronवृक्काणु (नेफ्रॉन) की संरचनाStructure of a nephronNCERT Fig 5.14 · 7 tappable partsOpen

The basic filtering unit of the kidney is the nephron. A cluster of very thin-walled blood capillaries, the glomerulus, sits in the cup-shaped end of a coiled tube, Bowman's capsule, which collects the filtrate. The initial filtrate has glucose, amino acids, salts and a major amount of water besides wastes. As it flows along the tubule, useful substances are selectively reabsorbed. The amount of water reabsorbed depends on how much excess water there is in the body and how much dissolved waste has to be excreted. Urine from each kidney enters the ureter. Kidney ki basic filtering unit nephron hai. Bahut patli deewar wali blood capillaries ka guchha, glomerulus, ek coiled nali ke cup jaise sire Bowman's capsule mein hota hai, jo filtrate ikattha karta hai. Shuru ke filtrate mein waste ke alawa glucose, amino acids, salts aur bahut saara paani hota hai. Tubule mein behte waqt kaam ke padarth selectively reabsorb hote hain. Kitna paani reabsorb hoga, ye body mein extra paani aur nikalne wale ghule waste ki maatra par depend karta hai. Har kidney ka urine ureter mein jaata hai.

Artificial kidney (haemodialysis)If kidneys fail, an artificial kidney removes nitrogenous wastes: blood is passed through long tubes with a semi-permeable lining, suspended in dialysing fluid, and then pumped back. Unlike the kidney, there is no reabsorption. In a healthy adult the initial filtrate is about 180 L daily, but only a litre or two is excreted — the rest is reabsorbed in the kidney tubules. Artificial kidney (haemodialysis)Kidney kaam karna band kare to artificial kidney nitrogenous waste nikalta hai: blood ko semi-permeable lining wali lambi naliyon se (dialysing fluid mein doobi) guzaarkar wapas pump kiya jaata hai. Kidney se alag, isme reabsorption nahi hota. Healthy adult mein shuru ka filtrate lagbhag 180 L roz hota hai, par sirf ek-do litre bahar nikalta hai — baaki kidney tubules mein reabsorb ho jaata hai.

Blood passes through the heart twice per cycle. Right side: deoxygenated blood from the body (vena cava → right atrium → right ventricle) goes to the lungs. Left side: oxygenated blood from the lungs (left atrium → left ventricle) is pumped to the body via the aorta. It keeps the two bloods separate, giving an efficient oxygen supply needed for high energy use and maintaining body temperature. Har cycle mein blood heart se do baar guzarta hai. Right side: body ka deoxygenated blood (vena cava → right atrium → right ventricle) lungs mein jaata hai. Left side: lungs ka oxygen wala blood (left atrium → left ventricle) aorta se body mein pump hota hai. Isse dono blood alag rehte hain aur zyada energy aur body temperature ke liye oxygen ki efficient supply hoti hai.
