Parts and their functions

• Fixed pulley (स्थिर घिरनी) — A grooved wheel on a fixed axle; the rope runs over it (flagpole, well).
• Load (भार) — The weight being lifted (mg).
• Effort (प्रयास) — Equal to the load (ignoring friction), so MA = 1. The pulley only changes the direction of the force — pulling down is easier and you can use your own weight. Movable pulleys / pulley systems give MA > 1.
