Parts and their functions

• Straight-line axis (सीधी रेखा अक्ष) — Positions right of O are positive (+), left of O negative (−).
• Reference point O (origin) (संदर्भ बिंदु O (मूल बिंदु)) — Position is the distance and direction of the object from this fixed point.
• Position A (100 m) (स्थिति A (100 m)) — Reached at t = 10 s; the athlete then turns back.
• Position B (40 m) (स्थिति B (40 m)) — Passed at t = 4 s and reached again at t = 16 s while returning.
• Total distance travelled (तय की गई कुल दूरी) — Length of the actual path: OA + AB = 100 m + 60 m = 160 m. Only a number (no direction).
• Displacement (विस्थापन) — Net change in position from first to last instant: OB = 40 m in the + direction. Needs magnitude and direction.
