12.1IntroductionभूमिकाIntroduction
By 1897, J. J. Thomson’s experiments on electric discharge through gases showed that atoms of every element contain electrons — identical, negatively charged particles. But a whole atom is electrically neutral, so it must also contain an equal amount of positive charge. The real question was: how are the positive charge and the electrons arranged inside the atom?1897 तक जे. Par poora atom electrically neutral hota hai, isliye usmein utna hi positive charge bhi hona chahiye. Asli sawaal tha: atom ke andar positive charge aur electrons kaise arranged hain?Atoms have electrons (negative) but are neutral overall, so they also hold positive charge. Where is it?
Thomson’s model (1898): the positive charge is spread uniformly through the whole atom, and the electrons are embedded in it like seeds in a watermelon — the “plum pudding model”. Later experiments (this chapter) showed that this picture is wrong.टॉमसन मॉडल (1898): धनावेश पूरे परमाणु में समान रूप से फैला है और इलेक्ट्रॉन उसमें तरबूज़ के बीजों की तरह धँसे हैं — “प्लम पुडिंग मॉडल”। बाद के प्रयोगों (इस अध्याय) ने दिखाया कि यह चित्र गलत है।Thomson model (1898): positive charge poore atom mein uniformly phaila hai aur electrons usmein tarbooz ke beejon ki tarah dhanse hain — “plum pudding model”. Baad ke experiments (is chapter) ne dikhaya ki ye picture galat hai.Thomson: a ball of positive charge with electrons stuck in it, like seeds in a watermelon.
A second clue came from light. Hot solids, liquids and dense gases give a continuous spectrum (all wavelengths). But a rarefied gas excited in a flame or a glow tube (like a neon sign) gives only certain discrete wavelengths — a set of bright lines. In a rarefied gas the atoms are far apart, so this light comes from individual atoms. Each element has its own characteristic line spectrum; hydrogen always gives lines at fixed relative positions. So the spectrum must be linked to the internal structure of the atom. In 1885 Balmer found a simple empirical formula for a group of hydrogen lines. Doosra clue light se mila. Garam solids, liquids aur dense gases continuous spectrum (saari wavelengths) dete hain. Par flame ya glow tube (jaise neon sign) mein excite ki gayi rarefied gas sirf kuch discrete wavelengths deti hai — bright lines ka set. Rarefied gas mein atoms door-door hote hain, isliye ye light individual atoms se aati hai. Har element ka apna characteristic line spectrum hota hai; hydrogen hamesha fixed relative positions par lines deta hai. Isliye spectrum ka connection atom ki internal structure se hona chahiye. 1885 mein Balmer ne hydrogen ki lines ke ek group ke liye ek simple empirical formula diya.A thin, glowing gas gives only a few sharp colours (lines), different for each element. So the lines must tell us how the atom is built.
Rutherford proposed (1906) firing α-particles at atoms to probe their structure. Geiger and Marsden did the experiment around 1911 (Marsden was a 20-year-old student!). Its result gave Rutherford’s nuclear (planetary) model: all the positive charge and most of the mass sit in a tiny nucleus, with electrons revolving around it like planets around the sun. But this model could not explain why atoms emit only discrete wavelengths — that needed Bohr (Section 12.4). Geiger aur Marsden ne lagbhag 1911 mein ye experiment kiya (Marsden tab 20 saal ke student the!). Iske result se Rutherford ka nuclear (planetary) model bana: poora positive charge aur zyaadatar mass ek tiny nucleus mein hai, aur electrons uske chaaron or aise ghoomte hain jaise planets sun ke chaaron or. Par ye model nahi samjha paaya ki atoms sirf discrete wavelengths hi kyon emit karte hain — iske liye Bohr ki zaroorat padi (Section 12.4).
Street lights that glow yellow (sodium) or bluish-white (mercury), and the red glow of a neon sign, are exactly these line spectra — each gas glows in its own fixed colours.पीली (सोडियम) या नीली-सफ़ेद (पारा) चमकने वाली स्ट्रीट लाइटें और नियॉन साइन की लाल चमक ठीक यही रेखा स्पेक्ट्रम हैं — हर गैस अपने निश्चित रंगों में चमकती है।Peeli (sodium) ya neeli-safed (mercury) chamakne waali street lights aur neon sign ki laal chamak bilkul yahi line spectra hain — har gas apne fixed colours mein chamakti hai.
12.2Alpha-particle scattering and Rutherford’s nuclear model of atomऐल्फा-कण प्रकीर्णन तथा रदरफ़ोर्ड का परमाणु नाभिकीय मॉडलAlpha-particle scattering aur Rutherford ka nuclear model
The experiment (Geiger and Marsden, 1911). α-particles of 5.5 MeV from a radioactive source ²¹⁴₈₃Bi were made into a narrow beam by passing them through lead bricks (see). The beam fell on a very thin gold foil (thickness 2.1 × 10⁻⁷ m). Scattered α-particles were detected by a rotatable zinc sulphide (ZnS) screen and microscope: each α-particle striking the screen makes a tiny flash (scintillation), so the number scattered at each angle θ can be counted. The whole apparatus is kept in a vacuum chamber. Experiment (Geiger aur Marsden, 1911). Radioactive source ²¹⁴₈₃Bi se nikle 5.5 MeV ke α-particles ko lead bricks se guzaar kar narrow beam banaya gaya (dekhiye). Ye beam bahut patli gold foil (thickness 2.1 × 10⁻⁷ m) par padi. Scattered α-particles ko rotatable zinc sulphide (ZnS) screen aur microscope se dekha gaya: screen se takraane wala har α-particle ek chhoti flash (scintillation) deta hai, isliye har angle θ par scattered particles gine ja sakte hain. Poora apparatus vacuum chamber mein rakha jaata hai.Shoot a thin beam of α-particles at very thin gold foil and count, with a glowing screen and microscope, how many come out at each angle.
What they saw (graph): most α-particles passed straight through the foil — they suffered no collision. Only about 0.14% were scattered by more than 1°, and about 1 in 8000 were deflected by more than 90° — some even came almost straight back! Sirf lagbhag 0.14% particles 1° se zyaada scatter hue, aur lagbhag 8000 mein se 1 particle 90° se zyaada muda — kuch to lagbhag seedhe wapas laut aaye!Almost all went straight. A very few bounced back sharply.
Rutherford’s argument: to turn a fast, heavy α-particle backwards, it must feel a very large repulsive force. That is possible only if most of the mass and all the positive charge of the atom are concentrated tightly at its centre. Then an α-particle can come very close to this charge (without entering it) and get a huge deflection. Spread-out charge, as in Thomson’s model, could never do this. The theoretical curve for such a nucleus matched Geiger and Marsden’s data — so Rutherford is credited with discovering the nucleus. Rutherford ka argument: tez, bhaari α-particle ko peeche modne ke liye us par bahut bada repulsive force lagna chahiye. Ye tabhi possible hai jab atom ka zyaadatar mass aur poora positive charge uske centre par tightly concentrated ho. Tab α-particle is charge ke bahut paas (andar gaye bina) aa sakta hai aur bahut zyaada deflect ho sakta hai. Thomson model jaisa phaila hua charge aisa kabhi nahi kar sakta. Aise nucleus ka theoretical curve Geiger-Marsden ke data se match hua — isliye nucleus ki khoj ka credit Rutherford ko diya jaata hai.
Rutherford’s nuclear model: the entire positive charge and most of the mass of the atom are in the nucleus; the electrons move in orbits around it, like planets around the sun. The experiments suggested a nuclear size of about 10⁻¹⁵ m to 10⁻¹⁴ m, while the atom (from kinetic theory) is about 10⁻¹⁰ m — 10,000 to 100,000 times larger. So most of an atom is empty space. That is why most α-particles go right through a thin foil. Only when an α-particle happens to come near a nucleus does the intense electric field there scatter it through a large angle. The atomic electrons, being very light, hardly affect the α-particles. Rutherford ka nuclear model: atom ka poora positive charge aur zyaadatar mass nucleus mein hai; electrons uske chaaron or orbits mein ghoomte hain, jaise planets sun ke chaaron or. Experiments se nucleus ka size lagbhag 10⁻¹⁵ m se 10⁻¹⁴ m nikla, jabki atom (kinetic theory se) lagbhag 10⁻¹⁰ m ka hai — 10,000 se 100,000 guna bada. Isliye atom ka zyaadatar hissa empty space hai. Isi wajah se zyaadatar α-particles patli foil se seedhe nikal jaate hain. Sirf jab koi α-particle nucleus ke paas aata hai, tabhi wahaan ka strong electric field use bade angle se scatter karta hai. Atom ke electrons bahut halke hone se α-particles par lagbhag koi asar nahi daalte. The nucleus is tiny and holds the + charge and the mass. The rest of the atom is nearly empty, so most α-particles fly through.
Analysing the scattering. The foil is so thin that an α-particle is scattered at most once, so we only need the path of an α-particle near one nucleus. An α-particle is a helium nucleus: charge 2e, mass of a helium atom. The gold nucleus has charge Ze with Z = 79, and it is about 50 times heavier than the α-particle, so we can treat it as stationary. Then Newton’s second law plus Coulomb’s law gives the path. The repulsive force isप्रकीर्णन का विश्लेषण। Foil itni patli hai ki α-particle maximum ek baar scatter hota hai, isliye humein sirf ek nucleus ke paas α-particle ka path chahiye. α-particle helium nucleus hai: charge 2e, mass helium atom jitna. Gold nucleus ka charge Ze hai, Z = 79, aur ye α-particle se lagbhag 50 guna bhaari hai, isliye ise stationary maan sakte hain. Tab Newton ka second law aur Coulomb ka law milkar path dete hain. Repulsive force hai
Here r is the distance between the α-particle and the nucleus. As the α-particle approaches and then recedes, both the magnitude and the direction of this force keep changing.यहाँ r, α-कण और नाभिक के बीच की दूरी है। α-कण के पास आते और फिर दूर जाते समय इस बल का परिमाण और दिशा दोनों लगातार बदलते हैं।Yahaan r, α-particle aur nucleus ke beech ki distance hai. α-particle ke paas aate aur phir door jaate samay is force ka magnitude aur direction dono lagaataar badalte hain.
12.2.1Alpha-particle trajectoryऐल्फा-कण प्रक्षेप पथAlpha-particle trajectory
The path of an α-particle depends on its impact parameter b — the perpendicular distance of the initial velocity vector of the α-particle from the centre of the nucleus (see b). In a beam all particles have nearly the same kinetic energy, but different values of b, so they scatter in different directions with different probabilities.α-कण का पथ उसके संघट्ट प्राचल b पर निर्भर करता है — α-कण के प्रारंभिक वेग सदिश की नाभिक के केंद्र से लंबवत दूरी (b देखें)। किरण-पुंज में सभी कणों की गतिज ऊर्जा लगभग समान होती है, पर b अलग-अलग होता है, इसलिए वे अलग-अलग प्रायिकता से अलग-अलग दिशाओं में प्रकीर्णित होते हैं।α-particle ka path uske impact parameter b par depend karta hai — α-particle ke initial velocity vector ki nucleus ke centre se perpendicular distance (b dekhiye). Beam mein saare particles ki kinetic energy lagbhag same hoti hai, par b alag-alag hota hai, isliye ve alag-alag probability se alag-alag directions mein scatter hote hain.Impact parameter b = how far “off-centre” the α-particle is aimed.
- Small b (aimed close to the nucleus) → large scattering angle θ.छोटा b (नाभिक के पास निशाना) → बड़ा प्रकीर्णन कोण θ।Chhota b (nucleus ke paas nishana) → bada scattering angle θ.
- Head-on collision (b minimum, ≈ 0) → the α-particle rebounds back, θ ≈ π (180°).आमने-सामने टक्कर (b न्यूनतम, ≈ 0) → α-कण वापस लौटता है, θ ≈ π (180°)।Head-on collision (b minimum, ≈ 0) → α-particle wapas laut-ta hai, θ ≈ π (180°).
- Large b → the α-particle goes nearly undeviated, θ ≈ 0.बड़ा b → α-कण लगभग बिना मुड़े निकल जाता है, θ ≈ 0।Bada b → α-particle lagbhag bina mude nikal jaata hai, θ ≈ 0.
Since only a small fraction of particles rebound, the number of head-on collisions is small. This means the mass and positive charge are concentrated in a very small volume. So Rutherford scattering is a powerful way to find an upper limit to the size of the nucleus.चूँकि केवल थोड़े से कण वापस लौटते हैं, आमने-सामने टक्करों की संख्या कम है। इसका अर्थ है कि द्रव्यमान और धनावेश बहुत छोटे आयतन में केंद्रित हैं। अतः रदरफ़ोर्ड प्रकीर्णन नाभिक के आकार की ऊपरी सीमा ज्ञात करने का एक शक्तिशाली तरीका है।Kyonki sirf thode se particles wapas lautte hain, head-on collisions ki sankhya kam hai. Iska matlab hai ki mass aur positive charge bahut chhote volume mein concentrated hain. Isliye Rutherford scattering nucleus ke size ki upper limit nikaalne ka ek powerful tareeka hai.
Fire α-particles at a gold nucleus. Change the impact parameter b and the α energy — the path is computed from Coulomb’s law and θ is shown live. “Fire a beam” sends many particles: watch how few bounce back.स्वर्ण नाभिक पर α-कण दागिए। संघट्ट प्राचल b और α ऊर्जा बदलिए — पथ कूलॉम नियम से गणना करके बनता है और θ तुरंत दिखता है। “किरण-पुंज दागें” से कई कण जाते हैं: देखिए कितने कम वापस लौटते हैं।Gold nucleus par α-particles daagiye. Impact parameter b aur α energy badaliye — path Coulomb ke law se calculate hota hai aur θ live dikhta hai. “Beam daagiye” se kai particles jaate hain: dekhiye kitne kam wapas lautte hain.
Beyond the book (for toppers): for a Coulomb (1/r²) repulsion the path is a hyperbola, and b and θ are related by b = (d/2) cot(θ/2), where d = 2Ze²/(4πε₀K) is the head-on distance of closest approach (Example 12.2). So halving b roughly doubles tan(θ/2). The number scattered per unit solid angle varies as 1/sin⁴(θ/2) — the curve of Fig. 12.3. Book se aage (toppers ke liye): Coulomb (1/r²) repulsion ke liye path hyperbola hota hai, aur b aur θ ka relation b = (d/2) cot(θ/2) hai, jahaan d = 2Ze²/(4πε₀K) head-on collision ki distance of closest approach hai (Example 12.2). Per unit solid angle scattered particles ki sankhya 1/sin⁴(θ/2) ke hisaab se badalti hai — Fig. 12.3 ka curve.
In Rutherford’s nuclear model, the nucleus (radius about 10⁻¹⁵ m) is like the sun, and the electron orbit (radius ≈ 10⁻¹⁰ m) is like the earth’s orbit. If the solar system had the same proportions as the atom, would the earth be closer to or farther from the sun than it actually is? Radius of earth’s orbit ≈ 1.5 × 10¹¹ m; radius of sun = 7 × 10⁸ m. Rutherford ke nuclear model mein nucleus (radius lagbhag 10⁻¹⁵ m) sun jaisa hai aur electron ka orbit (radius ≈ 10⁻¹⁰ m) earth ke orbit jaisa. Agar solar system ka proportion atom jaisa hota, to earth sun se actual ki tulna mein paas hoti ya door? Earth ke orbit ka radius ≈ 1.5 × 10¹¹ m; sun ka radius = 7 × 10⁸ m.

Ratio (electron orbit radius)/(nucleus radius) = 10⁻¹⁰/10⁻¹⁵ = 10⁵.अनुपात (इलेक्ट्रॉन कक्षा त्रिज्या)/(नाभिक त्रिज्या) = 10⁻¹⁰/10⁻¹⁵ = 10⁵।Ratio (electron orbit radius)/(nucleus radius) = 10⁻¹⁰/10⁻¹⁵ = 10⁵.
With the same ratio, earth’s orbit radius would be 10⁵ × 7 × 10⁸ m = 7 × 10¹³ m — about 470 times (that is, more than 100 times) the actual 1.5 × 10¹¹ m.उसी अनुपात से पृथ्वी की कक्षा की त्रिज्या 10⁵ × 7 × 10⁸ m = 7 × 10¹³ m होती — वास्तविक 1.5 × 10¹¹ m की लगभग 470 गुना (यानी 100 गुना से भी अधिक)।Usi ratio se earth ke orbit ka radius 10⁵ × 7 × 10⁸ m = 7 × 10¹³ m hota — actual 1.5 × 10¹¹ m ka lagbhag 470 guna (yaani 100 guna se bhi zyaada).
So the earth would be much farther from the sun. An atom contains a much greater fraction of empty space than our solar system.अतः पृथ्वी सूर्य से बहुत अधिक दूर होती। परमाणु में हमारे सौर मंडल की तुलना में कहीं अधिक रिक्त स्थान है।Isliye earth sun se bahut zyaada door hoti. Atom mein hamare solar system ki tulna mein kahin zyaada empty space hai.

Key idea: the total mechanical energy of the α-particle + gold nucleus system is conserved (see). Initially (far away) it is just the kinetic energy K. At the stopping point it is just the electric potential energy U.मुख्य विचार: α-कण + स्वर्ण नाभिक निकाय की कुल यांत्रिक ऊर्जा संरक्षित रहती है (देखें)। प्रारंभ में (दूर) यह केवल गतिज ऊर्जा K है। रुकने के बिंदु पर केवल विद्युत स्थितिज ऊर्जा U।Key idea: α-particle + gold nucleus system ki total mechanical energy conserved rehti hai (dekhiye). Shuru mein (door) ye sirf kinetic energy K hai. Rukne ke point par sirf electric potential energy U.
K = 7.7 MeV = 7.7 × 10⁶ × 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ J ≈ 1.2 × 10⁻¹² J; 1/4πε₀ = 9.0 × 10⁹ N m²/C²; e = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C.K = 7.7 MeV = 7.7 × 10⁶ × 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ J ≈ 1.2 × 10⁻¹² J; 1/4πε₀ = 9.0 × 10⁹ N m²/C²; e = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C।K = 7.7 MeV = 7.7 × 10⁶ × 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ J ≈ 1.2 × 10⁻¹² J; 1/4πε₀ = 9.0 × 10⁹ N m²/C²; e = 1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹ C.
d = 2 × (9.0 × 10⁹) × (1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹)² × Z / (1.2 × 10⁻¹²) = 3.84 × 10⁻¹⁶ Z m. For gold Z = 79: d = 3.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m = 30 fm (1 fm = 10⁻¹⁵ m).d = 2 × (9.0 × 10⁹) × (1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹)² × Z / (1.2 × 10⁻¹²) = 3.84 × 10⁻¹⁶ Z m। सोने के लिए Z = 79: d = 3.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m = 30 fm (1 fm = 10⁻¹⁵ m)।d = 2 × (9.0 × 10⁹) × (1.6 × 10⁻¹⁹)² × Z / (1.2 × 10⁻¹²) = 3.84 × 10⁻¹⁶ Z m. Gold ke liye Z = 79: d = 3.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m = 30 fm (1 fm = 10⁻¹⁵ m).
So the radius of the gold nucleus is less than 3.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m. The actual radius is about 6 fm: the α-particle turns back without ever touching the nucleus, because d is much larger than the sum of the two nuclear radii.अतः स्वर्ण नाभिक की त्रिज्या 3.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m से कम है। वास्तविक त्रिज्या लगभग 6 fm है: α-कण नाभिक को छुए बिना ही लौट जाता है, क्योंकि d दोनों नाभिकों की त्रिज्याओं के योग से बहुत बड़ा है।Isliye gold nucleus ka radius 3.0 × 10⁻¹⁴ m se kam hai. 12.3Atomic spectraपरमाणवीय स्पेक्ट्रमAtomic spectra
Each element has a characteristic spectrum. When an atomic gas or vapour is excited at low pressure, usually by passing an electric current through it, the emitted radiation contains only certain specific wavelengths. This is an emission line spectrum: bright lines on a dark background (see). Since each gas has its own lines, the emission spectrum is a kind of “fingerprint” to identify the gas. Har element ka ek characteristic spectrum hota hai. When white light passes through a gas and we analyse the transmitted light with a spectrometer, we see dark lines in the spectrum. These dark lines are at exactly the same wavelengths as the gas’s emission lines. 12.4Bohr model of the hydrogen atomहाइड्रोजन परमाणु का बोर मॉडलHydrogen atom ka Bohr model
Rutherford’s atom looks like the solar system, but there is a basic difference: the electron and nucleus are charged. An electron moving in a circle is accelerating (centripetal acceleration), and classical electromagnetic theory says an accelerating charge radiates EM waves. So the electron should keep losing energy and spiral into the nucleus (see) — the atom could not be stable. Rutherford ka atom solar system jaisa dikhta hai, par ek basic difference hai: electron aur nucleus charged hain. Circle mein ghoomta electron accelerating hai (centripetal acceleration), aur classical electromagnetic theory kehti hai ki accelerating charge radiation (EM waves) emit karta hai. Isliye electron lagaataar energy khota rahega aur spiral path par nucleus mein gir jaayega (dekhiye) — atom stable nahi reh sakta.A circling electron is accelerating, so classically it must radiate, lose energy and fall into the nucleus. Real atoms don’t.
Also, the emitted frequency equals the frequency of revolution. As the electron spirals in, this frequency changes continuously, so the atom would emit a continuous spectrum — but real atoms give a line spectrum. Clearly classical ideas are not enough to explain atomic structure.साथ ही, उत्सर्जित आवृत्ति परिक्रमण आवृत्ति के बराबर होती है। सर्पिल में अंदर जाते हुए यह आवृत्ति लगातार बदलती है, इसलिए परमाणु संतत स्पेक्ट्रम देता — पर वास्तविक परमाणु रेखा स्पेक्ट्रम देते हैं। स्पष्ट है कि चिरसम्मत विचार परमाणु संरचना समझाने के लिए पर्याप्त नहीं हैं।Saath hi, emitted frequency revolution ki frequency ke barabar hoti hai. Niels Bohr (1913), who had worked in Rutherford’s laboratory, concluded that classical electromagnetism, so successful for large-scale phenomena, cannot be applied to processes at the atomic scale. He combined classical ideas with the new quantum ideas of Planck and Einstein, in the form of three postulates:नील्स बोर (1913), जिन्होंने रदरफ़ोर्ड की प्रयोगशाला में काम किया था, इस निष्कर्ष पर पहुँचे कि चिरसम्मत विद्युत-चुंबकत्व, जो बड़े पैमाने की परिघटनाओं में इतना सफल है, परमाणु स्तर की प्रक्रियाओं पर लागू नहीं किया जा सकता। उन्होंने चिरसम्मत विचारों को प्लांक और आइंस्टाइन के नए क्वांटम विचारों से जोड़ा, तीन अभिगृहीतों के रूप में:Niels Bohr (1913), jinhone Rutherford ki lab mein kaam kiya tha, is conclusion par pahunche ki classical electromagnetism, jo large-scale phenomena mein itna successful hai, atomic scale ke processes par apply nahi kiya ja sakta. Unhone classical ideas ko Planck aur Einstein ke naye quantum ideas se joda, teen postulates ke roop mein:
- Postulate 1 — stationary orbits: an electron can revolve in certain stable orbits without emitting radiant energy, contrary to classical theory. Each such state has a definite total energy; these are the stationary states of the atom.अभिगृहीत 1 — स्थायी कक्षाएँ: इलेक्ट्रॉन कुछ स्थायी कक्षाओं में बिना विकिरण ऊर्जा उत्सर्जित किए घूम सकता है, चिरसम्मत सिद्धांत के विपरीत। हर ऐसी अवस्था की एक निश्चित कुल ऊर्जा होती है; ये परमाणु की स्थायी अवस्थाएँ हैं।Postulate 1 — stationary orbits: electron kuch stable orbits mein bina radiant energy emit kiye ghoom sakta hai, classical theory ke ulta. Har aisi state ki ek definite total energy hoti hai; ye atom ki stationary states hain.
- Postulate 2 — quantisation of angular momentum: the allowed orbits are those for which the angular momentum is an integral multiple of h/2π: L = nh/2π (n = 1, 2, 3, …), where h = 6.6 × 10⁻³⁴ J s is Planck’s constant.अभिगृहीत 2 — कोणीय संवेग का क्वांटमीकरण: अनुमत कक्षाएँ वे हैं जिनके लिए कोणीय संवेग h/2π का पूर्णांक गुणज हो: L = nh/2π (n = 1, 2, 3, …), जहाँ h = 6.6 × 10⁻³⁴ J s प्लांक नियतांक है।Postulate 2 — angular momentum ka quantisation: allowed orbits ve hain jinke liye angular momentum h/2π ka integral multiple ho: L = nh/2π (n = 1, 2, 3, …), jahaan h = 6.6 × 10⁻³⁴ J s Planck’s constant hai.
- Postulate 3 — transitions: an electron may jump from one allowed orbit to another of lower energy, emitting one photon whose energy equals the energy difference: hν = Eᵢ − E_f (Eᵢ > E_f).अभिगृहीत 3 — संक्रमण: इलेक्ट्रॉन एक अनुमत कक्षा से कम ऊर्जा वाली दूसरी कक्षा में कूद सकता है और एक फ़ोटॉन उत्सर्जित करता है जिसकी ऊर्जा ऊर्जा-अंतर के बराबर है: hν = Eᵢ − E_f (Eᵢ > E_f)।Postulate 3 — transitions: electron ek allowed orbit se kam energy waali doosri orbit mein jump kar sakta hai aur ek photon emit karta hai jiski energy energy-difference ke barabar hai: hν = Eᵢ − E_f (Eᵢ > E_f).

12.4.1Energy levelsऊर्जा स्तरEnergy levels
The energy is least (most negative) for the orbit closest to the nucleus, n = 1. For n = 2, 3, … the magnitude |E| is smaller, so the energy is larger in outer orbits. The lowest state, n = 1, with the smallest orbit (radius a₀) is the ground state: E₁ = −13.6 eV. So the minimum energy needed to free the electron from the ground state is 13.6 eV — the ionisation energy of hydrogen. Bohr’s value agrees excellently with experiment. Nucleus ke sabse paas waali orbit, n = 1, ke liye energy sabse kam (sabse zyaada negative) hai. n = 2, 3, … ke liye |E| chhota hai, isliye bahar ki orbits mein energy zyaada hai. Sabse chhoti orbit (radius a₀) waali sabse neechi state n = 1 ground state hai: E₁ = −13.6 eV. Isliye ground state se electron ko free karne ke liye minimum 13.6 eV — hydrogen ki ionisation energy chahiye. Bohr ki value experiment se bahut achhi tarah match karti hai.n = 1 is the lowest, most stable state: −13.6 eV. Giving 13.6 eV frees the electron (ionisation).
At room temperature most hydrogen atoms are in the ground state. Collisions (e.g. with electrons) can give an atom enough energy to raise its electron to a higher state — an excited state. E₂ = −3.40 eV, so exciting to the first excited state needs E₂ − E₁ = 10.2 eV. E₃ = −1.51 eV, so the second excited state (n = 3) needs 12.09 eV. From an excited state the electron can fall back to a lower state, emitting a photon. As n increases, the energy needed to free the electron from that excited state decreases. Room temperature par zyaadatar hydrogen atoms ground state mein hote hain. Collisions (jaise electrons se) atom ko itni energy de sakte hain ki uska electron upar ki state — excited state — mein chala jaaye. E₂ = −3.40 eV, isliye first excited state tak excite karne mein E₂ − E₁ = 10.2 eV lagte hain. E₃ = −1.51 eV, isliye second excited state (n = 3) ke liye 12.09 eV. Excited state se electron neeche ki state mein laut sakta hai aur ek photon emit karta hai. n badhne par us excited state se electron ko free karne ki energy ghatti jaati hai.
The energy-level diagram (see) shows these stationary states, labelled by the principal quantum number n in increasing energy. The top line, n = ∞, has E = 0 eV: the electron is completely removed (r = ∞) and at rest. Notice how the levels crowd closer together as n increases. Above 0 eV the electron is free and can have any energy — a continuum. Energy level diagram (dekhiye) in stationary states ko badhti energy ke order mein principal quantum number n se dikhaata hai. Dhyaan dijiye, n badhne par levels paas-paas aate jaate hain. 0 eV se upar electron free hai aur koi bhi energy le sakta hai — continuum.
“Higher” energy level means less negative energy, not a bigger number on the scale: −1.51 eV is higher than −13.6 eV. And excitation energy is a difference (10.2 eV to go 1 → 2), not E₂ itself.“ऊँचा” ऊर्जा स्तर मतलब कम ऋणात्मक ऊर्जा: −1.51 eV, −13.6 eV से ऊँचा है। और उत्तेजन ऊर्जा एक अंतर है (1 → 2 के लिए 10.2 eV), स्वयं E₂ नहीं।“Upar” ka energy level matlab kam negative energy: −1.51 eV, −13.6 eV se upar hai. Aur excitation energy ek difference hai (1 → 2 ke liye 10.2 eV), khud E₂ nahi.
12.5The line spectra of the hydrogen atomहाइड्रोजन परमाणु का रैखिक स्पेक्ट्रमHydrogen atom ki line spectra
By Bohr’s third postulate, when the atom makes a transition from a higher state nᵢ to a lower state n_f (n_f < nᵢ), the energy difference is carried away by a photon of frequency ν such thatबोर के तृतीय अभिगृहीत के अनुसार, जब परमाणु उच्च अवस्था nᵢ से निम्न अवस्था n_f (n_f < nᵢ) में संक्रमण करता है, तो ऊर्जा-अंतर आवृत्ति ν वाला एक फ़ोटॉन ले जाता है, जहाँBohr ke third postulate ke anusaar, jab atom higher state nᵢ se lower state n_f (n_f < nᵢ) mein transition karta hai, to energy difference frequency ν waala ek photon le jaata hai, jahaan
Since nᵢ and n_f can only be integers, light is radiated only at certain discrete frequencies — exactly a line spectrum! The lines produced when electrons jump from higher to lower states are emission lines. When an atom absorbs a photon of precisely the energy needed to lift its electron from a lower to a higher state, that is absorption: if light of all frequencies passes through a rarefied gas, dark absorption lines appear at just these frequencies. Kyonki nᵢ aur n_f sirf integers ho sakte hain, light sirf kuch discrete frequencies par radiate hoti hai — bilkul line spectrum! Electron ke upar se neeche ki state mein jump karne par banne waali lines emission lines hain. Jab atom bilkul utni energy ka photon absorb karta hai jitni uske electron ko neeche se upar ki state mein le jaane ke liye chahiye, to ye absorption hai: agar saari frequencies ki light rarefied gas se guzre, to bilkul inhi frequencies par dark absorption lines dikhti hain.Only whole-number orbits exist, so only certain energy gaps exist, so only certain colours come out. That is the line spectrum.

Bohr’s explanation of the hydrogen spectrum was a brilliant achievement that greatly pushed physics towards modern quantum theory. Bohr received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922.बोर द्वारा हाइड्रोजन स्पेक्ट्रम की व्याख्या एक शानदार उपलब्धि थी जिसने भौतिकी को आधुनिक क्वांटम सिद्धांत की ओर बहुत आगे बढ़ाया। बोर को 1922 में भौतिकी का नोबेल पुरस्कार मिला।Bohr dwara hydrogen spectrum ki explanation ek shaandaar achievement thi jisne physics ko modern quantum theory ki or bahut aage badhaaya. 12.6De Broglie’s explanation of Bohr’s second postulate of quantisationबोर के क्वांटमीकरण के द्वितीय अभिगृहीत की दे ब्रॉग्ली द्वारा व्याख्याBohr ke second postulate ki de Broglie explanation
The most puzzling postulate is the second: why should angular momentum be only nh/2π? In 1923, ten years after Bohr’s model, Louis de Broglie explained it. In Chapter 11 you saw his idea that material particles like electrons also have a wave nature, λ = h/p (confirmed by Davisson and Germer in 1927). Sabse confusing postulate doosra hai: angular momentum sirf nh/2π hi kyon ho? Bohr model ke das saal baad, 1923 mein, Louis de Broglie ne iski explanation di. Chapter 11 mein aapne unka idea dekha ki electron jaise material particles ki bhi wave nature hoti hai, λ = h/p (1927 mein Davisson aur Germer ne confirm kiya).
De Broglie argued that the electron in its orbit should be seen as a particle wave. On a plucked string, only those wavelengths survive that form standing waves; all others interfere with themselves and die out. Likewise, on a circular orbit a standing wave forms only when the circumference is a whole number of wavelengths (see):दे ब्रॉग्ली ने तर्क दिया कि कक्षा में इलेक्ट्रॉन को एक कण तरंग के रूप में देखना चाहिए। Kheenchi gayi string par sirf vahi wavelengths bachti hain jo standing waves banati hain; baaki sab khud se interfere karke mit jaati hain. Isi tarah circular orbit par standing wave tabhi banti hai jab circumference poori sankhya mein wavelengths ho (dekhiye):The electron is a wave going round the orbit. It survives only if a whole number of waves fit the circle.
With λ = h/p = h/(mvₙ) (speed ≪ c): 2πrₙ = nh/(mvₙ), that isλ = h/p = h/(mvₙ) (चाल ≪ c) रखने पर: 2πrₙ = nh/(mvₙ), अर्थातλ = h/p = h/(mvₙ) (speed ≪ c) rakhne par: 2πrₙ = nh/(mvₙ), yaani
So the quantised orbits and energy levels come from the wave nature of the electron: only resonant standing waves can persist. Fig. 12.8 shows n = 4: four de Broglie wavelengths fit around the orbit.अतः क्वांटित कक्षाएँ और ऊर्जा स्तर इलेक्ट्रॉन की तरंग प्रकृति से आते हैं: केवल अनुनादी अप्रगामी तरंगें ही बनी रह सकती हैं। चित्र 12.8 में n = 4 दिखाया है: कक्षा के चारों ओर चार दे ब्रॉग्ली तरंगदैर्घ्य समाती हैं।Isliye quantised orbits aur energy levels electron ki wave nature se aate hain: sirf resonant standing waves hi bani reh sakti hain. Fig. 12.8 mein n = 4 dikhaaya hai: orbit ke chaaron or chaar de Broglie wavelengths fit hoti hain.
Slide the number of wavelengths around the orbit. Only at whole numbers (1, 2, 3 …) does the wave join itself smoothly and stand still — those are Bohr’s allowed orbits. See rₙ, vₙ and λ for each n.कक्षा के चारों ओर तरंगदैर्घ्यों की संख्या स्लाइड कीजिए। केवल पूर्णांकों (1, 2, 3 …) पर तरंग स्वयं से सहज रूप से जुड़ती और स्थिर रहती है — यही बोर की अनुमत कक्षाएँ हैं। हर n के लिए rₙ, vₙ और λ देखिए।Orbit ke chaaron or wavelengths ki sankhya slide kijiye. Sirf whole numbers (1, 2, 3 …) par wave khud se smoothly judti aur steady rehti hai — yahi Bohr ki allowed orbits hain. Har n ke liye rₙ, vₙ aur λ dekhiye.
Limitations of Bohr’s model. It correctly predicts the gross features of hydrogenic atoms (a nucleus +Ze with a single electron: H, He⁺, Li²⁺ …), especially the frequencies emitted or absorbed. But:बोर मॉडल की सीमाएँ। यह हाइड्रोजन-सम परमाणुओं (नाभिक +Ze और एक इलेक्ट्रॉन: H, He⁺, Li²⁺ …) के मुख्य लक्षण, विशेष रूप से उत्सर्जित या अवशोषित आवृत्तियाँ, सही बताता है। पर:Bohr model ki limitations. Ye hydrogenic atoms (nucleus +Ze aur ek electron: H, He⁺, Li²⁺ …) ke main features, khaas kar emitted ya absorbed frequencies, sahi batata hai. Par:
- (i) It cannot be extended even to two-electron atoms like helium. It includes only the force between the nucleus and the electron, not the electron–electron forces present in multi-electron atoms.(i) इसे हीलियम जैसे दो इलेक्ट्रॉन वाले परमाणुओं पर भी लागू नहीं किया जा सकता। इसमें केवल नाभिक और इलेक्ट्रॉन के बीच का बल है, बहु-इलेक्ट्रॉन परमाणुओं में मौजूद इलेक्ट्रॉन-इलेक्ट्रॉन बल नहीं।(i) Ise helium jaise do electron waale atoms par bhi apply nahi kiya ja sakta. Ismein sirf nucleus aur electron ke beech ka force hai, multi-electron atoms mein maujood electron-electron forces nahi.
- (ii) It predicts the frequencies correctly but cannot explain the relative intensities of the lines — why some visible lines of hydrogen are weak and others strong.(ii) यह आवृत्तियाँ सही बताता है पर रेखाओं की सापेक्ष तीव्रताओं की व्याख्या नहीं कर सकता — हाइड्रोजन की कुछ दृश्य रेखाएँ दुर्बल और कुछ प्रबल क्यों हैं।(ii) Ye frequencies sahi batata hai par lines ki relative intensities explain nahi kar sakta — hydrogen ki kuch visible lines weak aur kuch strong kyon hain.
For complex atoms we need quantum mechanics, which gives a much more complete picture of atomic structure.जटिल परमाणुओं के लिए क्वांटम यांत्रिकी चाहिए, जो परमाणु संरचना का कहीं अधिक पूर्ण चित्र देती है।Complex atoms ke liye quantum mechanics chahiye, jo atomic structure ki kahin zyaada complete picture deti hai.
Why still study Bohr’s model? It uses just three postulates yet explains almost all the general features of the hydrogen spectrum, it uses familiar classical ideas, and it shows how a bold new idea (quantisation) can make correct predictions.फिर भी बोर मॉडल क्यों पढ़ें? यह केवल तीन अभिगृहीतों से हाइड्रोजन स्पेक्ट्रम की लगभग सभी सामान्य विशेषताएँ समझा देता है, जाने-पहचाने चिरसम्मत विचारों का उपयोग करता है, और दिखाता है कि एक साहसिक नया विचार (क्वांटमीकरण) सही प्रागुक्तियाँ कैसे कर सकता है।Phir bhi Bohr model kyon padhein? Ye sirf teen postulates se hydrogen spectrum ke lagbhag saare general features samjha deta hai, jaane-pehchaane classical ideas use karta hai, aur dikhaata hai ki ek bold naya idea (quantisation) sahi predictions kaise kar sakta hai.

The hydrogen nucleus (a proton, ~1 u) is lighter than the α-particle (~4 u) and has charge only +e. A heavy particle hitting a lighter one at rest cannot be turned back; momentum conservation limits its deflection to at most sin⁻¹(1/4) ≈ 14°. So there would be no large-angle scattering — the proton recoils instead. The experiment would not reveal a nucleus. Hydrogen nucleus (proton, ~1 u) α-particle (~4 u) se halka hai aur charge sirf +e hai.
