Kössel–Lewis approach: octet rule aur Lewis structure

Atoms combine to reach a stable noble-gas arrangement of eight electrons in the outer shell (octet rule) — by transferring electrons (ionic bond, Kössel) or by sharing them (covalent bond, Lewis). Lewis symbols show valence electrons as dots: ·Na, :Ö: style. A shared pair is a single bond; two pairs a double bond (O=O), three a triple bond (N≡N). Atoms outer shell mein aath electrons ka stable noble-gas arrangement paane ke liye judte hain (octet rule) — electrons transfer karke (ionic bond, Kössel) ya share karke (covalent bond, Lewis). Lewis symbols valence electrons ko dots se dikhate hain. Ek shared pair = single bond; do pairs = double bond (O=O), teen = triple bond (N≡N).

Writing a Lewis structure (NCERT Problems 4.1, 4.2)1. Add valence electrons of all atoms; add one per negative charge, subtract one per positive charge.
2. Put the least electronegative atom in the centre (H and F always at the ends).
3. Draw single bonds, then complete octets with lone pairs; use multiple bonds if electrons run short.
CO (4.1): 4 + 6 = 10 electrons → :C≡O: (a triple bond and one lone pair on each atom).
NO₂⁻ (4.2): 5 + 2 × 6 + 1 = 18 electrons → [O=N–O]⁻ with one lone pair on N; the two N–O bonds are equivalent by resonance.
Lewis structure likhna (NCERT Problems 4.1, 4.2)1. Sab atoms ke valence electrons jodiye; har negative charge par ek jodiye, har positive par ek ghataiye.
2. Sabse kam electronegative atom beech mein (H aur F hamesha kinaare).
3. Single bonds banaiye, phir lone pairs se octet poora; electrons kam padein to multiple bond.
CO (4.1): 4 + 6 = 10 electrons → :C≡O:.
NO₂⁻ (4.2): 5 + 12 + 1 = 18 electrons → [O=N–O]⁻, N par ek lone pair; resonance se dono N–O bonds same.

Formal charge (4.1.4) helps pick the best Lewis structure: FC = V − L − ½B (valence electrons in the free atom, minus non-bonding electrons, minus half the bonding electrons). In O₃ the central O has FC +1, the singly bonded O −1 and the doubly bonded O 0. The structure with the smallest formal charges is usually the most stable. Formal charge (4.1.4) best Lewis structure chunne mein madad karta hai: FC = V − L − ½B (free atom ke valence electrons − non-bonding electrons − bonding electrons ka aadha). O₃ mein central O par FC +1, single bonded O par −1, double bonded O par 0. Sabse kam formal charge wali structure aksar sabse stable.

Limitations of the octet rule (4.1.5): (i) incomplete octet — LiCl, BeH₂, BCl₃ (B has only 6); (ii) odd-electron molecules — NO, NO₂; (iii) expanded octet — third-period elements can use 3d orbitals: PF₅ (10), SF₆ (12), H₂SO₄ (12 around S). The rule also cannot explain why noble gases form compounds (XeF₂, XeF₄), the shapes of molecules, or their energies.अष्टक नियम की सीमाएँ (4.1.5): (i) अपूर्ण अष्टक — LiCl, BeH₂, BCl₃ (B के पास केवल 6); (ii) विषम इलेक्ट्रॉन अणु — NO, NO₂; (iii) विस्तारित अष्टक — तीसरे आवर्त के तत्व 3d कक्षक प्रयोग कर सकते हैं: PF₅ (10), SF₆ (12), H₂SO₄ (S के चारों ओर 12)। Octet rule ki limitations (4.1.5): (i) incomplete octet — LiCl, BeH₂, BCl₃ (B ke paas sirf 6); (ii) odd-electron molecules — NO, NO₂; (iii) expanded octet — third period elements 3d orbitals use kar sakte hain: PF₅ (10), SF₆ (12), H₂SO₄ (S ke chaaron taraf 12). Ye rule noble gas compounds (XeF₂, XeF₄), molecules ki shape ya energy nahi samjha paata.

Ionic ya electrovalent bond

An ionic bond forms easily when (i) the metal has a low ionisation enthalpy, (ii) the non-metal has a high negative electron gain enthalpy, and (iii) the lattice enthalpy is large. Na(g) → Na⁺(g) + e⁻ (+495.8 kJ mol⁻¹) and Cl(g) + e⁻ → Cl⁻(g) (−348.7 kJ mol⁻¹) together would need energy; the large release when ions pack into the crystal makes NaCl stable. Lattice enthalpy = energy needed to separate 1 mol of a solid ionic compound into gaseous ions (NaCl: 788 kJ mol⁻¹). Ionic bond aasaani se banta hai jab (i) metal ki ionisation enthalpy kam, (ii) non-metal ki electron gain enthalpy zyada negative, aur (iii) lattice enthalpy badi ho. Na(g) → Na⁺(g) + e⁻ (+495.8 kJ mol⁻¹) aur Cl(g) + e⁻ → Cl⁻(g) (−348.7 kJ mol⁻¹) milkar energy maangenge; ions ke crystal mein judne par nikli badi energy NaCl ko stable banati hai. Lattice enthalpy = 1 mol solid ionic compound ko gaseous ions mein alag karne ki energy (NaCl: 788 kJ mol⁻¹).

Resonance (4.3.5): when one Lewis structure cannot describe a molecule, it is shown as a resonance hybrid of several canonical forms. In O₃ both O–O bonds are 128 pm — between O–O (148 pm) and O=O (121 pm). The hybrid is more stable than any canonical form; canonical forms differ only in the position of electrons, never of atoms, and have no real existence. Resonance (4.3.5): jab ek Lewis structure molecule ko nahi dikha paati, use kai canonical forms ke resonance hybrid se dikhate hain. O₃ mein dono O–O bonds 128 pm — O–O (148 pm) aur O=O (121 pm) ke beech. Hybrid kisi bhi canonical form se zyada stable; canonical forms sirf electrons ki position mein alag, atoms ki nahi, aur inka real existence nahi.

NCERT Problems 4.3 and 4.44.3 CO₃²⁻: one Lewis structure would have one C=O and two C–O bonds, but experiment shows all three C–O bonds are equal. CO₃²⁻ is a resonance hybrid of three canonical forms, the double bond in a different position in each.
4.4 CO₂: measured C–O = 115 pm lies between C=O (121 pm) and C≡O (110 pm), so CO₂ is a resonance hybrid of O=C=O, ⁻O–C≡O⁺ and ⁺O≡C–O⁻.
NCERT Problems 4.3 aur 4.44.3 CO₃²⁻: ek Lewis structure mein ek C=O aur do C–O hote, par experiment se teeno C–O bonds same. CO₃²⁻ teen canonical forms ka resonance hybrid.
4.4 CO₂: measured C–O = 115 pm, C=O (121) aur C≡O (110) ke beech; isliye O=C=O, ⁻O–C≡O⁺, ⁺O≡C–O⁻ ka resonance hybrid.

Polarity of bonds (4.3.6): between identical atoms (H₂, Cl₂) the shared pair is equally held — non-polar covalent. Between different atoms the more electronegative one pulls the pair: Hδ+–Fδ− — polar covalent. Dipole moment μ = charge × distance (unit debye, 1 D = 3.33564 × 10⁻³⁰ C m); it is a vector. CO₂ (linear) and BF₃ (trigonal) have μ = 0 because bond dipoles cancel; H₂O (1.85 D) and NH₃ (1.47 D) are polar. NH₃ > NF₃ (0.23 D): in NH₃ the lone pair moment adds to the bond moments, in NF₃ it opposes them. Fajans’ rules: covalent character of an ionic bond grows with a smaller, more highly charged cation and a larger anion. Bonds ki polarity (4.3.6): same atoms (H₂, Cl₂) mein shared pair barabar — non-polar covalent. Alag atoms mein zyada electronegative atom pair kheenchta: Hδ+–Fδ− — polar covalent. Dipole moment μ = charge × distance (unit debye, 1 D = 3.33564 × 10⁻³⁰ C m); ye vector hai. CO₂ (linear) aur BF₃ (trigonal) ka μ = 0 kyunki bond dipoles cancel; H₂O (1.85 D) aur NH₃ (1.47 D) polar. NH₃ > NF₃ (0.23 D): NH₃ mein lone pair ka moment bond moments mein judta, NF₃ mein ulta. Fajans rules: chhota, zyada charged cation aur bada anion ho to ionic bond mein covalent character badhta.

Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (Sidgwick–Powell, Nyholm–Gillespie): (i) the shape depends on the number of electron pairs (bonded and lone) around the central atom; (ii) pairs repel and arrange to be as far apart as possible; (iii) a multiple bond counts as one super-pair; (iv) repulsion order lp–lp > lp–bp > bp–bp, because lone pairs are held only by one nucleus and spread out more. Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion (Sidgwick–Powell, Nyholm–Gillespie): (i) shape central atom ke chaaron taraf electron pairs (bond aur lone) ki sankhya par depend; (ii) pairs ek-doosre ko repel karke zyada se zyada door rehte; (iii) multiple bond ko ek pair maante; (iv) repulsion order lp–lp > lp–bp > bp–bp, kyunki lone pair ek hi nucleus se bandha, zyada phaila.

Heitler and London explained H₂: as two H atoms approach, attractions (nucleus–other electron) and repulsions (electron–electron, nucleus–nucleus) both act. Attraction wins at first, energy falls to a minimum at 74 pm — the bond — and 435.8 kJ mol⁻¹ is released. Orbital overlap: a covalent bond forms when half-filled orbitals of two atoms overlap and the electrons pair with opposite spins; the greater the overlap, the stronger the bond. Heitler aur London ne H₂ samjhaya: do H atoms paas aane par attraction (nucleus–doosra electron) aur repulsion (electron–electron, nucleus–nucleus) dono kaam karte hain. 4.6HybridisationसंकरणHybridisation

To explain shapes like tetrahedral CH₄, Pauling proposed hybridisation: orbitals of nearly equal energy on one atom mix to give an equal number of identical hybrid orbitals, which then form σ bonds (or hold lone pairs). Only orbitals of the central atom hybridise; hybrids give stronger bonds than pure orbitals. Tetrahedral CH₄ jaisi shapes samjhane ke liye Pauling ne hybridisation diya: ek atom ke lagbhag same energy wale orbitals milkar utne hi same hybrid orbitals banate hain, jo σ bonds banate (ya lone pair rakhte). In MO theory (Hund and Mulliken) atomic orbitals of similar energy and proper symmetry combine (LCAO) into molecular orbitals that belong to the whole molecule. This weak attraction (shown by dotted lines) is a hydrogen bond — stronger than van der Waals forces but much weaker than covalent bonds. Intermolecular: HF, water (see H-bonded water in 3D), alcohols — it raises boiling points (H₂O is a liquid, H₂S a gas). Intramolecular: o-nitrophenol (3D). Intermolecular: HF, paani (H-bonded paani 3D mein), alcohols — boiling point badhata (H₂O liquid, H₂S gas). Intramolecular: o-nitrophenol (3D).

NH₃ (1.47 D) > NF₃ (0.23 D). Both are pyramidal with a lone pair on N. In NH₃ the N–H dipoles point towards N, the same direction as the lone-pair moment, so they add. In NF₃ the N–F dipoles point towards F, opposite to the lone-pair moment, so they partly cancel.NH₃ (1.47 D) > NF₃ (0.23 D)। NH₃ (1.47 D) > NF₃ (0.23 D). NH₃ mein N–H dipoles aur lone pair moment ek direction mein, judte; NF₃ mein ulte, thoda cancel.
