With 118 elements known, studying each one separately is impossible. Arranging them so that similar elements fall together makes chemistry systematic — properties can be predicted from position.118 ज्ञात तत्वों को अलग-अलग पढ़ना असंभव है। 118 known elements ko alag-alag padhna impossible hai. Moseley (1913) found that X-ray frequencies of elements depend on atomic number, not mass. Modern periodic law: the physical and chemical properties of elements are periodic functions of their atomic numbers. In the long form there are 7 periods (rows) holding 2, 8, 8, 18, 18, 32 and 32 elements, and 18 groups (columns). The period number = the principal quantum number n of the outermost shell. Elements of the same group have the same outer electronic configuration, so similar properties. The 6th and 7th period f-block elements (lanthanoids and actinoids) are placed separately at the bottom. Modern periodic law: elements ki physical aur chemical properties unke atomic numbers ka periodic function hain. Long form mein 7 periods (rows) — 2, 8, 8, 18, 18, 32 aur 32 elements — aur 18 groups (columns). Period number = outermost shell ka principal quantum number n. Ek group ke elements ki outer configuration same, isliye properties same. 6th aur 7th period ke f-block elements (lanthanoids aur actinoids) neeche alag rakhe gaye.

Z > 100 wale elements ka naam

Until IUPAC approves a permanent name, a new element gets a temporary name from Latin/Greek roots of its digits, ending in -ium, and a three-letter symbol: 0 nil (n), 1 un (u), 2 bi (b), 3 tri (t), 4 quad (q), 5 pent (p), 6 hex (h), 7 sept (s), 8 oct (o), 9 enn (e). So 101 = unnilunium (Unu) → now mendelevium (Md); 118 = ununoctium (Uuo) → now oganesson (Og). Permanent names honour scientists or places: seaborgium (106, Sg), lawrencium (103, Lr), nihonium (113), tennessine (117).IUPAC IUPAC ka permanent naam milne tak naye element ko uske digits ke Latin/Greek roots se temporary naam milta hai, end mein -ium, aur teen letter ka symbol: 0 nil (n), 1 un (u), 2 bi (b), 3 tri (t), 4 quad (q), 5 pent (p), 6 hex (h), 7 sept (s), 8 oct (o), 9 enn (e). To 101 = unnilunium (Unu) → ab mendelevium (Md); 118 = ununoctium (Uuo) → ab oganesson (Og). Permanent naam scientists ya jagah ke naam par: seaborgium (106, Sg), lawrencium (103, Lr), nihonium (113), tennessine (117).

Metals, non-metals, metalloids: over 78% of elements are metals (left side) — mostly solid (Hg is liquid; Ga and Cs melt near room temperature), lustrous, good conductors, malleable and ductile. Non-metals sit at the top right, are poor conductors and brittle. A zig-zag line separates them; elements beside it — Si, Ge, As, Sb, Te — are metalloids with mixed properties. Metallic character increases down a group and decreases across a period. Metals, non-metals, metalloids: 78% se zyada elements metals hain (left side) — zyadatar solid (Hg liquid; Ga, Cs room temperature ke paas pighalte hain), chamakdaar, achhe conductor, malleable aur ductile. An atom has no sharp boundary, so size is measured from bonded atoms: covalent radius (half the single-bond distance, Cl: 99 pm) for non-metals and metallic radius (Cu: 128 pm) for metals. Radius decreases across a period (Li 152 → F 64 pm — larger effective nuclear charge pulls the same shell in) and increases down a group (Li 152 → Cs 262 pm — new shells). Noble gas radii are van der Waals radii, so they are not compared with these. Atom ki koi saaf boundary nahi, isliye size bonded atoms se naapte hain: non-metals ke liye covalent radius (single bond doori ka aadha, Cl: 99 pm) aur metals ke liye metallic radius (Cu: 128 pm). Radius period mein ghatta hai (Li 152 → F 64 pm — zyada effective nuclear charge same shell ko andar kheenchta hai) aur group mein badhta hai (Li 152 → Cs 262 pm — naye shells). Noble gases ka radius van der Waals radius hai, isliye compare nahi karte.

(b)Ionic radiusआयनिक त्रिज्याIonic radius

A cation is smaller than its atom (fewer electrons, same nuclear charge; Na 186 pm → Na⁺ 95 pm). An anion is larger (more electrons, more repulsion, lower effective charge; F 64 pm → F⁻ 136 pm). Isoelectronic species have the same number of electrons (O²⁻, F⁻, Na⁺, Mg²⁺ all 10); among them the larger the positive nuclear charge, the smaller the ion. Cation apne atom se chhota (kam electrons, nuclear charge same; Na 186 pm → Na⁺ 95 pm). Anion bada (zyada electrons, zyada repulsion, kam effective charge; F 64 pm → F⁻ 136 pm). Isoelectronic species mein electrons same (O²⁻, F⁻, Na⁺, Mg²⁺ sab 10); inme jitna zyada positive nuclear charge, utna chhota ion.

NCERT Problem 3.5Mg, Mg²⁺, Al, Al³⁺: atoms shrink across the period (Mg > Al); cations are smaller than their atoms; Mg²⁺ and Al³⁺ are isoelectronic, Al³⁺ has more protons. NCERT Problem 3.5Atoms period mein chhote (Mg > Al); cations chhote; Mg²⁺ aur Al³⁺ isoelectronic, Al³⁺ mein zyada protons. Ionisation enthalpy (ΔᵢH) is the energy needed to remove an electron from an isolated gaseous atom in its ground state: X(g) → X⁺(g) + e⁻. It is always positive. The second ionisation enthalpy is always larger than the first (removing an electron from a positive ion is harder). Ionisation enthalpy (ΔᵢH) ground state ke isolated gaseous atom se ek electron nikaalne ki energy hai: X(g) → X⁺(g) + e⁻. The graph shows peaks at noble gases and minima at alkali metals. ΔᵢH generally increases across a period and decreases down a group (bigger atom, more shielding by inner electrons). Exceptions: B (801) < Be (899) because B loses a 2p electron, which is more shielded than a 2s electron (s electrons penetrate closer to the nucleus); O (1314) < N (1402) because N has a stable half-filled 2p³ while O loses one of a paired 2p electron. Graph mein noble gases par peaks aur alkali metals par minimum. ΔᵢH aam taur par period mein badhti aur group mein ghatti hai (bada atom, andar ke electrons ki zyada shielding). Exceptions: B (801) < Be (899), kyunki B se 2p electron nikalta hai jo 2s se zyada shielded hai (s electrons nucleus ke zyada paas penetrate karte hain); O (1314) < N (1402), kyunki N ka half-filled 2p³ stable hai jabki O se paired 2p electron nikalta hai.

NCERT Problem 3.6Na 496, Mg 737, Si 786 kJ mol⁻¹. Al’s ΔᵢH is closer to 575 kJ mol⁻¹: Al loses a 3p electron, which is shielded by the 3s² pair and held less firmly than Mg’s 3s electron. (वास्तविक: 577)NCERT Problem 3.6Al ki ΔᵢH 575 kJ mol⁻¹ ke paas: Al se 3p electron nikalta hai, jo 3s² se shielded hai aur Mg ke 3s electron se dheela. Electron gain enthalpy

Electron gain enthalpy (ΔegH) is the enthalpy change when an electron is added to an isolated gaseous atom: X(g) + e⁻ → X⁻(g). Negative = energy released (exothermic). Halogens have the most negative values (Cl −349, F −328 kJ mol⁻¹); noble gases have positive values (Ne +116) because the electron must enter a new shell. It becomes more negative across a period and less negative down a group — but F is less negative than Cl, since an electron added to the small 2p shell of F suffers strong repulsion. Similarly O (−141) is less negative than S (−200). The second electron gain enthalpy of O is positive. Electron gain enthalpy (ΔegH) isolated gaseous atom mein electron judne par enthalpy change hai: X(g) + e⁻ → X⁻(g). Negative = energy release (exothermic). Halogens ke values sabse negative (Cl −349, F −328 kJ mol⁻¹); noble gases ke positive (Ne +116), kyunki electron ko naye shell mein jaana padta hai. Period mein zyada negative, group mein kam negative — par F, Cl se kam negative, kyunki F ke chhote 2p shell mein juda electron strong repulsion jhelta hai. Isi tarah O (−141), S (−200) se kam negative. O ki second electron gain enthalpy positive hai.

NCERT Problem 3.7Among P, S, Cl, F: most negative Cl; least negative P (its half-filled 3p³ resists an extra electron). F is less negative than Cl because of repulsion in its small 2p shell.NCERT NCERT Problem 3.7P, S, Cl, F mein: sabse negative Cl; sabse kam negative P (half-filled 3p³). F, Cl se kam negative — chhote 2p shell mein repulsion.

(e)Electronegativityविद्युत-ऋणात्मकताElectronegativity

Electronegativity is the ability of an atom in a chemical compound to attract the shared electron pair. It is not a measurable energy and has no unit; scales such as Pauling’s give relative values — F 4.0 (highest), O 3.5, N 3.0, Cl 3.0, C 2.5, Li 1.0, Cs 0.7. It increases across a period and decreases down a group. Non-metals have high electronegativity, metals low. Electronegativity compound mein atom ki shared electron pair ko apni taraf kheenchne ki taakat hai. Ye naapi jaane wali energy nahi, koi unit nahi; Pauling jaise scales relative values dete hain — F 4.0 (sabse zyada), O 3.5, N 3.0, Cl 3.0, C 2.5, Li 1.0, Cs 0.7. Period mein badhti, group mein ghatti. Non-metals ki zyada, metals ki kam.

Valence: for representative elements it equals the number of valence electrons or 8 minus that number. Group 1 → 1, group 14 → 4, group 16 → 2 (8 − 6), group 17 → 1. Transition and inner-transition elements show variable valence. Anomalous second period: Li, Be, B differ from their own groups (small size, high charge/radius, no d orbitals — maximum covalency 4) and resemble the element diagonally below in the next group: Li–Mg, Be–Al (diagonal relationship). Group 1 → 1, group 14 → 4, group 16 → 2 (8 − 6), group 17 → 1. Transition elements ki valency variable. Second period ka anomalous behaviour: Li, Be, B apne group se alag (chhota size, high charge/radius, d orbitals nahi — maximum covalency 4) aur agle group ke tirchhe neeche wale jaise: Li–Mg, Be–Al (diagonal relationship).

3.9 [AlCl(H₂O)₅]²⁺ mein Al ki oxidation state +3, covalency 6 — same nahi.

Reactivity and oxides (3.7.3): reactivity is highest at the two ends of a period — the left (alkali metals, which lose an electron easily) and the right (halogens, which gain one easily). Oxides on the left are basic (Na₂O), in the middle amphoteric (Al₂O₃) or neutral (CO, NO, N₂O), and on the right acidic (Cl₂O₇). Metallic, basic character and reducing power fall across a period; non-metallic, acidic character and oxidising power rise. Down a group, alkali metal reactivity increases (Li < Na < K < Rb < Cs) but halogen reactivity decreases (F > Cl > Br > I). Reactivity aur oxides (3.7.3): period ke dono siron par reactivity sabse zyada — left (alkali metals, electron aasaani se khote hain) aur right (halogens, aasaani se lete hain). ⚠ Common mistakes⚠ आम गलतियाँ⚠ Common mistakes

  • Electron gain enthalpy is an energy you can measure; electronegativity is a relative number for an atom in a compound — don’t use them as synonyms. Electron gain enthalpy measurable energy hai; electronegativity compound mein relative number — dono ko same na maaniye.
  • “Fluorine has the most negative electron gain enthalpy” is wrong — chlorine does. Fluorine has the highest electronegativity.“फ़्लोरीन की इलेक्ट्रॉन लब्धि एन्थैल्पी सबसे ऋणात्मक” गलत — क्लोरीन की है। “Fluorine ki electron gain enthalpy sabse negative” galat — chlorine ki hai. Fluorine ki electronegativity sabse zyada.
  • Don’t compare a noble gas’s van der Waals radius with covalent radii to say it is the “largest” in its period.
  • Period number is the outer shell’s n, not the number of valence electrons; group number (for s, p) relates to valence electrons. Period number outer shell ka n hai, valence electrons nahi; group number (s, p ke liye) valence electrons se juda.

3.1 What is the basic theme of organisation in the periodic table?3.1 आवर्त सारणी में व्यवस्था का मूल विचार क्या है?3.1 Periodic table ke organisation ka basic theme?
To arrange elements so that those with similar properties fall in the same group, making their study simple and systematic: properties repeat periodically with increasing atomic number, so an element’s position predicts its behaviour. Elements ko aise rakhna ki similar properties wale ek group mein aayein aur padhai simple ho: badhte atomic number ke saath properties repeat hoti hain, isliye position se behaviour pata chalta hai.

3.9 What do atomic radius and ionic radius really mean?3.9 परमाणु त्रिज्या और आयनिक त्रिज्या का अर्थ?3.9 Atomic radius aur ionic radius ka matlab?
Atomic radius: the distance from the nucleus to the outermost electron shell, measured as the covalent radius (half the bond length between two like atoms) or metallic radius (half the distance between neighbouring metal nuclei). Ionic radius: the distance from the nucleus of an ion to the point up to which it holds its electron cloud, found from distances between cations and anions in ionic crystals.
3.10 How does atomic radius vary in a period and in a group? 3.10 Period aur group mein atomic radius kaise badalta hai?
Across a period it decreases: electrons enter the same shell while nuclear charge rises, so effective nuclear charge pulls them closer. Down a group it increases: a new shell is added each period and inner electrons shield the outer ones. Period mein ghatta: electrons same shell mein, nuclear charge badhta, effective charge paas kheenchta. Group mein badhta: har period mein naya shell, andar ke electrons shielding karte.

(i) F⁻ (10 e): Ne, Na⁺, O²⁻ (ii) Ar (18): Cl⁻, K⁺, S²⁻, Ca²⁺ (iii) Mg²⁺ (10): Ne, Na⁺, Al³⁺, F⁻ (iv) Rb⁺ (36): Kr, Br⁻, Sr²⁺, Se²⁻. (i) Ne, Na⁺ (ii) Cl⁻, K⁺ (iii) Na⁺, Al³⁺ (iv) Kr, Sr²⁺।Same electrons wali species. 3.13 Why are cations smaller and anions larger than their parent atoms?3.13 धनायन छोटे और ऋणायन अपने परमाणुओं से बड़े क्यों?3.13 Cations chhote aur anions bade kyon?
A cation has fewer electrons for the same nuclear charge, so each electron is pulled in more strongly (often a whole shell is lost). An anion has more electrons for the same charge; extra repulsion and lower effective nuclear charge make the cloud expand. Cation mein same nuclear charge par kam electrons — zyada attraction (kabhi poora shell hat jaata hai). Anion mein zyada electrons — zyada repulsion, kam effective charge, cloud phailta hai.
3.14 Significance of ‘isolated gaseous atom’ and ‘ground state’ in defining ionisation enthalpy and electron gain enthalpy?3.14 आयनन और इलेक्ट्रॉन लब्धि एन्थैल्पी की परिभाषा में ‘विलगित गैसीय परमाणु’ और ‘मूल अवस्था’ का महत्व?3.14 ‘Isolated gaseous atom’ aur ‘ground state’ ka mahatva?
For fair comparison. In the isolated gaseous state the atom feels no forces from neighbours (as in solids or liquids), and the ground state is its lowest-energy, definite state; so the values belong to the atom itself and can be compared between elements. Fair comparison ke liye. Isolated gaseous state mein atom par padosiyon ka koi force nahi, aur ground state sabse kam energy wali fixed state hai; isliye values atom ki apni hain aur compare ho sakti hain.
3.15 Ground state energy of H atom = −2.18 × 10⁻¹⁸ J. Ionisation enthalpy in J mol⁻¹?3.15 H आयनन एन्थैल्पी J mol⁻¹ में?3.15 H ki ground state energy −2.18 × 10⁻¹⁸ J — ionisation enthalpy J mol⁻¹?
Per atom 2.18 × 10⁻¹⁸ J (to take the electron to E = 0). Per mole: 2.18 × 10⁻¹⁸ × 6.022 × 10²³ = 1.312 × 10⁶ J mol⁻¹ (1312 kJ mol⁻¹).प्रति मोल 2.18 × 10⁻¹⁸ × 6.022 × 10²³ = 1.312 × 10⁶ J mol⁻¹।Per mole 2.18 × 10⁻¹⁸ × 6.022 × 10²³ = 1.312 × 10⁶ J mol⁻¹.
3.16 Order Li < B < Be < C < O < N < F < Ne. Why (i) Be > B (ii) O < N and O < F?3.16 क्रम Li < B < Be < C < O < N < F < Ne। क्यों (i) Be > B (ii) O < N और O < F?3.16 Kyon (i) Be > B (ii) O < N aur O < F?
(i) Be loses a 2s electron, which penetrates closer to the nucleus; B loses a 2p electron, shielded by 2s² and held less firmly. (ii) N (2p³) is half-filled and extra stable; O (2p⁴) has one paired 2p orbital whose electrons repel each other, so one is removed more easily. F is higher than O because of its larger nuclear charge and smaller size.(i) Be (i) Be se 2s electron (nucleus ke paas penetrate); B se 2p (2s² se shielded). (ii) N ka 2p³ half-filled, stable; O ke 2p⁴ mein paired electrons repel. F ka nuclear charge zyada, size chhota — isliye O se zyada.
3.17 Why is the first ionisation enthalpy of Na lower than Mg’s, but its second higher?3.17 Na की प्रथम आयनन एन्थैल्पी Mg से कम पर द्वितीय अधिक क्यों?3.17 Na ki first IE Mg se kam par second zyada kyon?
Na (3s¹) loses its single 3s electron easily; Mg (3s²) has a larger nuclear charge. After one electron is lost, Na⁺ has the noble-gas configuration of Ne, so its second electron comes from the core 2p — very hard. Mg⁺ (3s¹) still has a valence electron to lose, so its second ionisation is much easier. Mg⁺ (3s¹) mein abhi valence electron hai, isliye aasaan.
3.18 Factors making ionisation enthalpy of main group elements decrease down a group?3.18 वर्ग में नीचे आयनन एन्थैल्पी घटने के कारक?3.18 Group mein neeche IE ghatne ke factors?
Atomic size increases (outer electron farther from the nucleus) and shielding by more inner electrons increases. These outweigh the rise in nuclear charge. Atomic size badhta (bahar ka electron door) aur zyada inner electrons ki shielding badhti; ye nuclear charge ke badhne se zyada asar karte.

B → Al falls as expected (bigger atom). Ga has ten 3d electrons, which shield poorly, so its outer electron feels a higher effective nuclear charge — Ga ≈ Al instead of lower. In falls again with size. Tl has 4f and 5d electrons, which shield very poorly, so Tl rises above In.B → Al B → Al expected girawat (bada atom). Ga mein das 3d electrons, kamzor shielding — zyada effective charge, isliye Ga ≈ Al.
3.20 More negative electron gain enthalpy: (i) O or F (ii) F or Cl?3.20 अधिक ऋणात्मक ΔegH: (i) O या F (ii) F या Cl?3.20 Zyada negative ΔegH: (i) O ya F (ii) F ya Cl?
(i) F — higher nuclear charge, and gaining one electron completes its octet (2p⁶). (ii) Cl (−349 vs −328) — the added electron goes into the larger 3p shell, with less repulsion than in F’s compact 2p.(i) F — अधिक नाभिकीय आवेश, एक इलेक्ट्रॉन से अष्टक पूरा। (i) F — zyada nuclear charge, ek electron se octet poora. 3.21 Is the second electron gain enthalpy of O positive, more negative or less negative than the first?3.21 O
Positive. O⁻ is already negative and repels the incoming electron, so energy must be supplied: O⁻(g) + e⁻ → O²⁻(g) is endothermic. Positive. O⁻ pehle se negative, aane wale electron ko repel karta; energy deni padti hai.
3.22 Difference between electron gain enthalpy and electronegativity?3.22 इलेक्ट्रॉन लब्धि एन्थैल्पी और विद्युत-ऋणात्मकता में अंतर?3.22 ΔegH aur electronegativity mein difference?
Electron gain enthalpy is a measurable energy change (kJ mol⁻¹) when an isolated gaseous atom gains an electron. Electronegativity is the tendency of an atom in a compound to attract the shared pair — a relative number on a scale, with no unit, not directly measurable. ΔegH isolated gaseous atom ke electron lene par measurable energy change (kJ mol⁻¹). Electronegativity compound mein atom ki shared pair kheenchne ki tendency — relative number, koi unit nahi.
3.23 Comment: “electronegativity of N on the Pauling scale is 3.0 in all nitrogen compounds.”3.23 टिप्पणी: “नाइट्रोजन के सभी यौगिकों में पॉलिंग पैमाने पर N की विद्युत-ऋणात्मकता 3.0 है।”3.23 Comment: “N ki electronegativity sab compounds mein 3.0 hai.”
Not correct. Electronegativity is not constant; it depends on the hybridisation and oxidation state of the atom in the compound (sp-N is more electronegative than sp³-N). 3.0 is a typical value. Sahi nahi. Electronegativity constant nahi; compound mein hybridisation aur oxidation state par depend. 3.0 ek typical value hai.
