Types: open (matter and energy cross), closed (only energy crosses), isolated (nothing crosses). The state of a system is described by measurable state variables — p, V, T, n. A state function depends only on the state, not on how it was reached: U, H, S, G, p, V, T. Work and heat are path functions. Types: open (matter aur energy dono), closed (sirf energy), isolated (kuch nahi). System ki state measurable state variables — p, V, T, n — se batate hain. State function sirf state par depend, raaste par nahi: U, H, S, G, p, V, T. Work aur heat path functions hain.

Internal energy U is the total energy of the system (chemical, electrical, mechanical …). It changes when heat passes in or out, or work is done on or by the system. In an adiabatic process no heat is exchanged (q = 0), so ΔU = wad. Sign convention (IUPAC): q and w are positive when energy goes into the system. Internal energy U system ki total energy hai (chemical, electrical, mechanical …). Hess’s law of constant heat summation: if a reaction takes place in several steps, its standard enthalpy is the sum of the enthalpies of the steps — enthalpy is a state function, so the route does not matter. Burning carbon: directly C + O₂ → CO₂ (−393.5 kJ mol⁻¹) = C → CO (−110.5) + CO → CO₂ (−283.0). This lets us find ΔH of reactions we cannot measure directly (like C → CO). Hess ka constant heat summation law: reaction kai steps mein ho to uski standard enthalpy sab steps ki enthalpy ka jod hoti hai — enthalpy state function hai, route se fark nahi padta. Spontaneity: entropy aur Gibbs energy

A spontaneous process happens on its own, without outside help (it may still be slow). A fall in enthalpy is not enough to decide it: many exothermic reactions are spontaneous, but some endothermic ones are too (melting of ice above 0 °C, dissolving NH₄NO₃, 2HgO → 2Hg + O₂ at high temperature). Spontaneous process bina bahari madad ke apne aap hota hai (bhale dheema ho). Sirf enthalpy ghatna iska faisla nahi kar sakta: bahut si exothermic reactions spontaneous hain, par kuch endothermic bhi (0 °C se upar barf pighalna, NH₄NO₃ ghulna, high temperature par 2HgO → 2Hg + O₂).

Entropy (S) measures the randomness or disorder of a system; it is a state function. Solid < liquid < gas. For a reversible change ΔS = qrev/T. For an isolated system, a spontaneous change always has ΔStotal = ΔSsys + ΔSsurr > 0 (second law of thermodynamics); at equilibrium ΔStotal = 0. Third law: the entropy of a perfectly crystalline substance is zero at 0 K, which lets us find absolute entropies. Entropy (S) system ki randomness ya disorder ka naap hai; ye state function hai. Solid < liquid < gas. Reversible change ke liye ΔS = qrev/T. Isolated system mein spontaneous change ke liye hamesha ΔStotal = ΔSsys + ΔSsurr > 0 (thermodynamics ka second law); equilibrium par ΔStotal = 0. Third law: perfectly crystalline substance ki entropy 0 K par zero hoti hai, isse absolute entropy milti hai.

Gibbs energy combines both tendencies: −TΔStotal = ΔGsys, so a positive ΔStotal means a negative ΔG. The four sign cases (NCERT Table 5.4): ΔH −, ΔS + spontaneous at all temperatures; ΔH −, ΔS − spontaneous only at low temperature; ΔH +, ΔS + spontaneous only at high temperature; ΔH +, ΔS − never spontaneous. ΔG is also the useful (non-expansion) work a reaction can do. Gibbs energy dono tendencies ko jodti hai: −TΔStotal = ΔGsys, isliye positive ΔStotal matlab negative ΔG. At equilibrium ΔrG = 0. A large negative ΔrG⊖ means K ≫ 1 (reaction goes nearly to completion); a large positive ΔrG⊖ means K ≪ 1 (very little product). Strongly endothermic reactions usually have a positive ΔrG⊖ and a small K.साम्य पर ΔrG = 0। Equilibrium par ΔrG = 0. Bada negative ΔrG⊖ → K ≫ 1 (reaction lagbhag poora); bada positive ΔrG⊖ → K ≪ 1 (bahut kam product). Strong endothermic reactions ka ΔrG⊖ aksar positive aur K chhota hota hai.
