The functions of organs and organ systems must be coordinated to maintain homeostasis. Coordination is the process through which two or more organs interact and complement each other’s functions — e.g., during exercise, muscles need more energy and oxygen, so the rate of respiration, heartbeat and blood flow all increase. The neural system and the endocrine system together coordinate and integrate all the activities of organs. The neural system provides an organised network of point-to-point connections for quick coordination; endocrine coordination through hormones is slower. Organs ka coordination zaroori hai (homeostasis) — jaise exercise mein saans, dhadkan, blood flow sab badhte hain. 18.1Neural systemतंत्रिका तंत्रNeural system

The neural system of all animals is made of highly specialised cells, neurons, which detect, receive and transmit different kinds of stimuli. It is very simple in lower invertebrates — e.g., in Hydra it is a network of neurons. In insects it is better organised: a brain with a number of ganglia and neural tissues. Vertebrates have a more developed neural system. Neural system neurons se bana. It has two parts: the central neural system (CNS) — brain and spinal cord, the site of information processing and control; and the peripheral neural system (PNS) — all the nerves of the body associated with the CNS. PNS nerve fibres are afferent (carry impulses from tissues/organs to the CNS) and efferent (carry regulatory impulses from the CNS to tissues/organs). The PNS has two divisions: the somatic neural system (relays impulses from the CNS to skeletal muscles) and the autonomic neural system (transmits impulses from the CNS to involuntary organs and smooth muscles). The ANS is further classified into the sympathetic and parasympathetic neural systems. The visceral nervous system is the part of the PNS comprising the nerves, fibres, ganglia and plexuses by which impulses travel from the CNS to the viscera and from the viscera to the CNS. CNS = brain + spinal cord (processing, control). 18.3Neuron as structural and functional unit of neural systemतंत्रिका तंत्र की संरचनात्मक व क्रियात्मक इकाई: न्यूरॉनNeuron

A neuron is a microscopic structure of three major parts: cell body, dendrites and axon. The cell body has cytoplasm with typical organelles and Nissl’s granules. Dendrites — short, repeatedly branched fibres (also with Nissl’s granules) — carry impulses towards the cell body. The axon is a long fibre whose distal end branches; each branch ends as a bulb-like synaptic knob with synaptic vesicles containing neurotransmitters; axons carry impulses away from the cell body to a synapse or neuromuscular junction. By the number of axons and dendrites: multipolar (one axon, two or more dendrites; cerebral cortex), bipolar (one axon, one dendrite; retina) and unipolar (cell body with one axon only; embryonic stage). 3D neuronन्यूरॉन तीन मुख्य भागों वाली सूक्ष्म संरचना: कोशिका काय, द्रुमाक्ष्य और तंत्रिकाक्ष। 3D न्यूरॉनNeuron: cell body (Nissl granules), dendrites (impulse andar ki taraf), axon (bahar ki taraf) → synaptic knobs (neurotransmitters). 18.3.1Generation and conduction of nerve impulseतंत्रिका आवेग का निर्माण और संचरणNerve impulse kaise banta aur chalta hai

Neurons are excitable because their membranes are polarised. Ion channels make the membrane selectively permeable. At rest the axonal membrane is comparatively more permeable to K⁺ and nearly impermeable to Na⁺, and impermeable to the negatively charged proteins of the axoplasm. So the axoplasm has high K⁺ and negative proteins, low Na⁺, while the outside fluid has low K⁺, high Na⁺ — a concentration gradient. These gradients are maintained by the sodium–potassium pump, which actively transports 3 Na⁺ outwards for 2 K⁺ into the cell. As a result, the outer surface is positive and the inner surface negative — the membrane is polarised; the potential difference across it is the resting potential. Rest mein membrane polarised: andar K⁺ zyada + negative proteins, bahar Na⁺ zyada. Na⁺-K⁺ pump: 3 Na⁺ bahar, 2 K⁺ andar. Bahar +, andar − = resting potential.

When a stimulus is applied at a site A, the membrane there becomes freely permeable to Na⁺; a rapid influx of Na⁺ reverses the polarity — outside negative, inside positive — the site is depolarised. This potential difference is the action potential — the nerve impulse. At site B just ahead, outside is still positive and inside negative, so current flows on the inner surface from A to B and on the outer surface from B to A; B gets depolarised and the impulse moves on along the axon. The rise in Na⁺ permeability is extremely short-lived, quickly followed by a rise in K⁺ permeability: K⁺ diffuses out and restores the resting potential (repolarisation), making the fibre ready for further stimulation. Stimulus → membrane Na⁺ ke liye khulti → Na⁺ andar → bahar −, andar + = depolarised → action potential (nerve impulse). 18.3.2Transmission of impulsesआवेगों का संचरणSynapse se transmission

A nerve impulse is transmitted from one neuron to another through junctions called synapses, formed by the membranes of a pre-synaptic and a post-synaptic neuron, which may or may not be separated by a gap, the synaptic cleft. Electrical synapses — membranes in very close proximity; current flows directly, like along a single axon; transmission is faster, but such synapses are rare in our system. Chemical synapses — membranes separated by a fluid-filled cleft; chemicals called neurotransmitters carry the impulse. When an impulse reaches the axon terminal, it stimulates the movement of synaptic vesicles towards the membrane, where they fuse with the plasma membrane and release neurotransmitters into the cleft. These bind to specific receptors on the post-synaptic membrane, opening ion channels; the entry of ions generates a new potential in the post-synaptic neuron, which may be excitatory or inhibitory. Synapse = pre + post-synaptic membrane (+ synaptic cleft). The brain is the central information-processing organ — the “command and control system”. It controls voluntary movements, balance of the body, functioning of vital involuntary organs (lungs, heart, kidneys, etc.), thermoregulation, hunger and thirst, circadian (24-hour) rhythms, activities of several endocrine glands and human behaviour; it is also the site of vision, hearing, speech, memory, intelligence, emotions and thoughts. It is protected by the skull and covered by cranial meninges: outer dura mater, very thin middle arachnoid, and inner pia mater (in contact with brain tissue). 18.4.1Forebrainअग्र मस्तिष्कForebrain

The forebrain consists of the cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus. The cerebrum forms the major part of the brain; a deep cleft divides it into left and right cerebral hemispheres, connected by a tract of nerve fibres, the corpus callosum. The cells covering the hemispheres form the cerebral cortex, thrown into prominent folds; it is the grey matter (concentrated neuron cell bodies). It has motor areas, sensory areas and large regions that are neither clearly sensory nor motor — the association areas — responsible for intersensory associations, memory and communication. Myelinated fibres of tracts form the inner white matter. The cerebrum wraps around the thalamus, a major coordinating centre for sensory and motor signalling. At the base of the thalamus lies the hypothalamus, with centres controlling body temperature and the urge for eating and drinking, and groups of neurosecretory cells that secrete hypothalamic hormones. The inner parts of the cerebral hemispheres and associated deep structures (amygdala, hippocampus, etc.) form the limbic system, which along with the hypothalamus regulates sexual behaviour, emotional reactions (excitement, pleasure, rage, fear) and motivation. Forebrain = cerebrum + thalamus + hypothalamus. 18.4.2Midbrainमध्य मस्तिष्कMidbrain

The midbrain lies between the thalamus/hypothalamus of the forebrain and the pons of the hindbrain. A canal, the cerebral aqueduct, passes through it. Its dorsal portion consists mainly of four round swellings (lobes) called corpora quadrigemina. The midbrain and hindbrain form the brain stem. Midbrain: thalamus/hypothalamus aur pons ke beech; cerebral aqueduct isse guzarti; dorsal mein 4 lobes = corpora quadrigemina.

Hindbrain

The hindbrain comprises the pons, cerebellum and medulla (medulla oblongata). The pons consists of fibre tracts that interconnect different regions of the brain. The cerebellum has a very convoluted surface to provide additional space for many more neurons. The medulla is connected to the spinal cord and contains centres that control respiration, cardiovascular reflexes and gastric secretions. Three major regions make up the brain stem — midbrain, pons and medulla oblongata; it forms the connection between the brain and the spinal cord. Hindbrain = pons (fibre tracts), cerebellum (bahut folds, zyada neurons), medulla (saans, heart reflexes, gastric secretion; spinal cord se juda). 3. Processes.
(a) Polarisation: at rest the axonal membrane is more permeable to K⁺, nearly impermeable to Na⁺ and to the negative proteins of the axoplasm. The Na⁺–K⁺ pump actively sends 3 Na⁺ out for every 2 K⁺ in. So the axoplasm has high K⁺ and negative proteins and the outside has high Na⁺: the outer surface becomes positive and the inner negative — the membrane is polarised (resting potential). (b) Depolarisation: a stimulus makes the membrane at that site freely permeable to Na⁺; rapid Na⁺ influx makes the inside positive and outside negative — the polarity is reversed (action potential). Local currents depolarise the next site, so the impulse travels; K⁺ outflow then repolarises the site. (c) Chemical synapse: the impulse arriving at the axon terminal makes synaptic vesicles move to and fuse with the membrane, releasing neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft; they bind specific receptors on the post-synaptic membrane, opening ion channels; ion entry produces a new potential in the post-synaptic neuron (excitatory or inhibitory).(a) (a) Polarisation — K⁺ permeable, Na⁺ nahi; pump 3 Na⁺ bahar, 2 K⁺ andar → bahar +, andar −. See synapse diagram. At an electrical synapse, pre- and post-synaptic membranes are very close; current flows directly across, so transmission is very fast (like conduction along one axon). At a chemical synapse: (i) the impulse (action potential) reaches the axon terminal; (ii) synaptic vesicles move towards the plasma membrane and fuse with it; (iii) neurotransmitters (e.g., acetylcholine) are released into the fluid-filled synaptic cleft; (iv) they bind specific receptors on the post-synaptic membrane; (v) ion channels open and ions enter, generating a new potential in the post-synaptic neuron — excitatory (impulse continues) or inhibitory. Diagram synapse. 7. Explain the role of Na⁺ in the generation of action potential.7. 7. Na⁺ ka role.
At rest the membrane is nearly impermeable to Na⁺ and the Na⁺–K⁺ pump keeps Na⁺ high outside (3 Na⁺ out per 2 K⁺ in), making the outside positive. When a stimulus is applied, the membrane at that site becomes freely permeable to Na⁺; Na⁺ rushes in down its concentration gradient. This influx of Na⁺ makes the inner surface positive and the outer negative — the polarity is reversed; this reversed potential is the action potential. The Na⁺-driven depolarisation also causes local current flow that depolarises the next site, so the impulse is conducted. (The rise in Na⁺ permeability is very brief; K⁺ outflow then repolarises the membrane.) Hindi book part (b): at the axon terminal, Ca²⁺ entry triggers the synaptic vesicles to fuse with the membrane and release the neurotransmitter. Rest mein Na⁺ bahar zyada (pump). Stimulus → membrane Na⁺ ke liye khulti → Na⁺ andar → andar +, bahar − = action potential; local current se impulse aage. (Hindi book (b): Ca²⁺ se vesicles fuse → neurotransmitter release.)
