Parts and their functions
- Axon terminal (तंत्रिकाक्ष अंतस्थ) — Pre-synaptic knob of the first neuron.
- Synaptic vesicles (सिनैप्टिक पुटिकाएँ) — Store neurotransmitters; fuse with the membrane when an impulse arrives.
- Mitochondrion (माइटोकॉन्ड्रिया) — Supplies ATP for transmitter release.
- Neurotransmitter (न्यूरोट्रांसमीटर) — Released into the cleft by exocytosis (e.g., acetylcholine).
- Synaptic cleft (सिनैप्टिक दरार) — Fluid-filled gap between pre- and post-synaptic membranes.
- Receptors (ग्राही) — Specific proteins that bind the transmitter and open ion channels.
- Post-synaptic membrane (पश्च-सिनैप्टिक झिल्ली) — New potential (excitatory or inhibitory) develops here.
- Impulse arrives (आवेग आता) — The action potential reaches the axon terminal.
