Movement is one of the significant features of living beings — cytoplasmic streaming in Amoeba, movement of cilia, flagella and tentacles, and limbs, jaws, eyelids and tongue in humans. Voluntary movements that result in a change of place or location are called locomotion (walking, running, climbing, flying, swimming). Locomotion is generally for food, shelter, mate, breeding grounds, favourable climate or escape from enemies/predators. Movement har jeev mein — Amoeba ka streaming, cilia, flagella.

- Amoeboid — macrophages and leucocytes in blood; caused by pseudopodia formed by streaming of protoplasm (as in Amoeba); cytoskeletal microfilaments are also involved. Amoeboid — macrophages, WBC; pseudopodia se.
- Ciliary — in internal tubular organs lined by ciliated epithelium; coordinated movement of cilia in the trachea removes dust and foreign particles; passage of ova through the female reproductive tract is also aided by it. Ciliary — trachea se dhool hatana, female tract mein ovum ka chalna.
- Muscular — movement of limbs, jaws, tongue, etc.; the contractile property of muscles is used for locomotion and other movements. Locomotion requires a perfectly coordinated activity of muscular, skeletal and neural systems. Muscular — limbs, jaws, tongue; muscles + skeleton + nerves ka coordination.
Muscle
Muscle is a specialised tissue of mesodermal origin; about 40–50% of the body weight of an adult human. Muscles have excitability, contractility, extensibility and elasticity. Based on location they are of three types: skeletal (attached to bones; striated, voluntary; locomotion and posture), visceral (inner walls of hollow visceral organs like the alimentary canal and reproductive tract; smooth, non-striated, involuntary; e.g., transport of food through the digestive tract, gametes through the genital tract) and cardiac (muscles of the heart; cells in a branching pattern; striated but involuntary). 3D muscles3Dपेशी मध्यजनस्तरी विशिष्ट ऊतक; वयस्क मनुष्य के शरीर भार का लगभग 40–50%। 3D पेशियाँ3DMuscle mesoderm se, body weight ka 40–50%. 3 types: skeletal (striated, voluntary), visceral/smooth (non-striated, involuntary — gut, reproductive tract), cardiac (striated par involuntary). 3D muscles3D
Each organised skeletal muscle is made of muscle bundles (fascicles) held together by a collagenous connective tissue layer, the fascia. Each bundle contains many muscle fibres. Each fibre is lined by the plasma membrane sarcolemma enclosing the sarcoplasm; it is a syncytium (many nuclei). Its endoplasmic reticulum, the sarcoplasmic reticulum, stores calcium ions. The sarcoplasm has many parallel myofilaments (myofibrils) with alternate dark and light bands, due to two proteins — actin (light I band, isotropic) and myosin (dark A band, anisotropic). In the centre of each I band is the elastic Z line, to which thin filaments are attached; thick filaments in the A band are held together by the thin M line. The portion between two successive Z lines is the sarcomere — the functional unit of contraction. The central part of the A band not overlapped by thin filaments is the H zone. Muscle → fascicles (fascia se bandhe) → muscle fibres (sarcolemma, sarcoplasm, kai nuclei = syncytium; sarcoplasmic reticulum mein Ca²⁺) → myofibrils (dark-light bands). I band = actin (light), A band = myosin (dark). I band ke beech Z line, A band ke beech M line. Z se Z = sarcomere. A band ka beech (actin nahi) = H zone.
Actin aur myosin ki structure
Each actin (thin) filament = two F (filamentous) actins helically wound, each a polymer of G (globular) actins; two filaments of tropomyosin run along the F-actins; troponin sits at regular intervals on tropomyosin and, at rest, a subunit of it masks the active binding sites for myosin on actin. Each myosin (thick) filament is a polymer of meromyosins; each has a globular head with a short arm (heavy meromyosin, HMM) and a tail (light meromyosin, LMM). The head and short arm project outwards at regular distances and angles as the cross arm; the globular head is an active ATPase enzyme with binding sites for ATP and active sites for actin. Actin: 2 F-actin (G-actin polymers) + tropomyosin + troponin (rest mein myosin sites dhakta). Myosin: meromyosins — head + short arm (HMM), tail (LMM); head = ATPase, cross arm banata hai.
Muscle contraction kaise hota hai
It is best explained by the sliding filament theory: contraction of a muscle fibre takes place by the sliding of the thin filaments over the thick filaments. Sliding filament theory: thin (actin) filaments, thick (myosin) filaments ke upar slide karte hain.
- A signal from the CNS reaches the muscle via a motor neuron. A motor neuron with the muscle fibres connected to it = a motor unit. The junction between a motor neuron and the sarcolemma = neuromuscular junction (motor-end plate).CNS CNS → motor neuron → neuromuscular junction (motor-end plate).
- The neural signal releases the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which generates an action potential in the sarcolemma; it spreads through the fibre and causes release of Ca²⁺ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum into the sarcoplasm. Acetylcholine → sarcolemma mein action potential → SR se Ca²⁺ release.
- Ca²⁺ binds to a subunit of troponin on actin and removes the masking of active sites for myosin.
- Using energy from ATP hydrolysis, the myosin head binds to the exposed active sites on actin to form a cross bridge, which pulls the actin filaments towards the centre of the A band. The Z lines attached to actin are pulled inwards → the sarcomere shortens (contraction). The I bands get reduced, the A bands retain their length.ATP जल-अपघटन की ऊर्जा से मायोसिन शीर्ष एक्टिन के खुले सक्रिय स्थलों से बंधकर अनुप्रस्थ सेतु बनाता, जो एक्टिन तंतुओं को A पट्ट के केंद्र की ओर खींचता। ATP energy se myosin head actin se judta = cross bridge → actin ko A band ke centre ki taraf kheenchta → Z lines paas → sarcomere chhota; I band kam, A band same.
- The myosin releases ADP and Pi and goes back to its relaxed state; a new ATP binds and the cross bridge is broken; ATP is hydrolysed again and the cycle of cross-bridge formation and breakage repeats, causing further sliding. ADP + Pi chhoot-te; naya ATP judta → cross bridge toot-ta; cycle repeat.
- When the signal stops, Ca²⁺ is pumped back into the sarcoplasmic reticulum, the actin sites are masked again, the Z lines return to their original position and the muscle relaxes. Repeated activation can cause lactic acid accumulation (anaerobic breakdown of glycogen), causing fatigue. Signal band → Ca²⁺ wapas SR mein → relaxation. Baar-baar kaam → lactic acid → fatigue.
Muscle contains a red, oxygen-storing pigment myoglobin. Muscles rich in myoglobin look reddish — red fibres; they also have plenty of mitochondria and use the large amount of stored O₂ for ATP — aerobic muscles. Some muscles have very little myoglobin and look pale — white fibres; they have few mitochondria but a large amount of sarcoplasmic reticulum and depend on the anaerobic process for energy. Red fibres — myoglobin zyada, mitochondria zyada, aerobic. The skeletal system is a framework of bones and a few cartilages; both are specialised connective tissues. Bone has a very hard matrix due to calcium salts; cartilage has a slightly pliable matrix due to chondroitin salts. The human skeleton has 206 bones and a few cartilages, in two divisions — axial (80 bones) along the main axis: skull, vertebral column, sternum and ribs; and appendicular (limbs with girdles). 3D skeleton3D · 3D real skeleton3Dकंकाल तंत्र अस्थियों व कुछ उपास्थियों का ढाँचा; दोनों विशिष्ट संयोजी ऊतक। 3DSkeleton = bones + cartilages. The first vertebra, atlas, articulates with the occipital condyles. Regions: cervical (7), thoracic (12), lumbar (5), sacral (1, fused), coccygeal (1, fused). Almost all mammals, including humans, have seven cervical vertebrae. It protects the spinal cord, supports the head and gives attachment to ribs and back muscles. Vertebral column 26: cervical 7, thoracic 12, lumbar 5, sacral 1, coccygeal 1. ⚠ Common mistakes⚠ आम गलतियाँ⚠ Common mistakes
- Saying the A band shortens in contraction — the A band keeps its length; the I band and H zone shorten. A band same rehta hai.
- Saying the filaments themselves get shorter — filaments slide; their length does not change. Filaments slide karte hain, chhote nahi hote.
- Writing that ATP is needed only for contraction — a new ATP is also needed to break the cross bridge (that is why muscles lock in rigor without ATP).ATP Cross bridge todne ke liye bhi ATP chahiye.
- Saying the H zone has both thick and thin filaments — it has only thick (myosin) filaments.H H zone = sirf myosin.
- Counting ribs as 11 pairs or 24 single ribs as “24 pairs” — humans have 12 pairs (24 ribs). 12 pairs = 24 ribs.
- Calling the knee a ball and socket joint — knee is a hinge joint; shoulder and hip are ball and socket. Knee = hinge.
