Parts and their functions
- Cerebrum (प्रमस्तिष्क) — Largest part; two hemispheres; cortex has sensory, motor and association areas.
- Corpus callosum (कॉर्पस कैलोसम) — Tract of nerve fibres joining the two cerebral hemispheres.
- Thalamus (थैलेमस) — Major coordinating centre for sensory and motor signalling.
- Hypothalamus (हाइपोथैलेमस) — Controls body temperature, hunger, thirst; neurosecretory cells.
- Pituitary (पीयूष ग्रंथि) — Endocrine gland hanging from the hypothalamus.
- Midbrain (मध्य मस्तिष्क) — Cerebral aqueduct passes through; corpora quadrigemina dorsally.
- Pons (पोंस) — Fibre tracts interconnecting different brain regions.
- Cerebellum (अनुमस्तिष्क) — Highly convoluted; space for many neurons; balance and coordination.
- Medulla oblongata (मेडुला ऑब्लांगेटा) — Centres for respiration, cardiovascular reflexes, gastric secretion.
- Spinal cord (मेरुरज्जु) — Continues from the medulla.
