3.1.2Non-metals — and the exceptionsअधातुएँ — और अपवादNon-metals — aur exceptions

Non-metals (carbon, sulphur, iodine, oxygen, hydrogen…) are solids or gases — bromine is the only liquid non-metal. They are generally dull, brittle, not ductile and poor conductors. But physical properties alone cannot sort elements, because of exceptions:अधातुएँ (कार्बन, सल्फ़र, आयोडीन, ऑक्सीजन, हाइड्रोजन…)

Oxides tell metals from non-metals (Activity 3.8)Burn magnesium, dissolve the ash in water → turns red litmus blue (basic oxide). Burn sulphur, dissolve the fumes in water → turns blue litmus red (acidic oxide). 3.2.1Metals burnt in airवायु में धातुओं का दहनHawa mein metals ka jalna

Almost all metals combine with oxygen to form metal oxides, which are basic. But aluminium oxide and zinc oxide react with both acids and bases to give salt + water — they are amphoteric oxides. A few metal oxides (Na₂O, K₂O) dissolve in water to give alkalis. K and Na catch fire in open air, so they are kept in kerosene oil. Mg, Al, Zn, Pb get a protective oxide layer. Iron filings burn in a flame; copper does not burn but gets a black CuO coat; silver and gold do not react with oxygen even at high temperature. Lagbhag sab metals oxygen se milkar metal oxides banate hain, jo basic hote hain. Par aluminium oxide aur zinc oxide acid aur base dono se salt + water banate hain — ye amphoteric oxides hain. Kuch metal oxides (Na₂O, K₂O) paani mein ghulkar alkali banate hain. K aur Na khule mein aag pakad lete hain, isliye kerosene tel mein rakhe jaate hain. Mg, Al, Zn, Pb par protective oxide layer banti hai. Lohe ka burada flame mein jalta hai; copper jalta nahi par kaali CuO layer chadh jaati hai; chaandi aur sona high temperature par bhi oxygen se react nahi karte.

Paani ke saath metals

Metal + water → metal oxide + hydrogen (a soluble oxide then gives the hydroxide). K and Na react violently with cold water — so exothermic that the hydrogen catches fire. Calcium reacts less violently and floats (hydrogen bubbles stick to it). Magnesium reacts with hot water and also floats. Al, Fe, Zn react only with steam. Pb, Cu, Ag, Au do not react with water at all. Metal + paani → metal oxide + hydrogen (soluble oxide phir hydroxide banata hai). K aur Na thande paani se bahut tez react karte hain — itna exothermic ki hydrogen aag pakad leti hai. Calcium kam tez react karta hai aur tairne lagta hai (hydrogen ke bulbule chipakte hain).

Acids ke saath metals

Metal + dilute acid → salt + hydrogen. With dilute HCl the rate of bubbling is fastest for magnesium (also most exothermic): Mg > Al > Zn > Fe. Copper does not react with dilute HCl. Hydrogen is not evolved with nitric acid — HNO₃ is a strong oxidising agent that oxidises H₂ to water and is itself reduced to N₂O, NO or NO₂ (only Mg and Mn give H₂ with very dilute HNO₃). Metal + dilute acid → salt + hydrogen. Dilute HCl mein bulbule sabse tez magnesium ke saath (sabse zyada exothermic bhi): Mg > Al > Zn > Fe. Copper dilute HCl se react nahi karta. Nitric acid ke saath hydrogen nahi nikalti — HNO₃ strong oxidising agent hai jo H₂ ko paani mein oxidise karta hai aur khud N₂O, NO ya NO₂ mein reduce hota hai (sirf Mg aur Mn bahut dilute HNO₃ se H₂ dete hain).

3.2.4Metals with solutions of other metal saltsअन्य धातु लवणों के विलयन के साथ धातुएँDoosre metal salts ke solution ke saath metals

An iron nail in copper sulphate solution gets a brown copper coat and the blue colour fades; a copper wire in iron sulphate solution shows no change. So iron is more reactive than copper. A more reactive metal displaces a less reactive metal from its salt solution — see the iron nail in CuSO₄ diagram from Chapter 1. Copper sulphate solution mein lohe ki keel par bhoori copper layer chadhti hai aur neela rang feeka padta hai; iron sulphate solution mein copper taar par koi change nahi. Yaani iron, copper se zyada reactive hai. Zyada reactive metal kam reactive metal ko uske salt solution se displace karta hai — Chapter 1 ka CuSO₄ mein lohe ki keel diagram dekhiye.

3.3How do metals and non-metals react?

Noble gases (He 2; Ne 2,8; Ar 2,8,8) have a completely filled valence shell and show little reactivity. Other elements react to get such a shell. Sodium (2,8,1) loses its one outer electron → Na⁺ (2,8). Chlorine (2,8,7) gains one electron → Cl⁻ (2,8,8). The oppositely charged ions attract by strong electrostatic forces → sodium chloride. Compounds formed by transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal are ionic or electrovalent compounds. NaCl exists as aggregates of ions, not molecules. Noble gases (He 2; Ne 2,8; Ar 2,8,8) ka valence shell poora bhara hota hai aur ye bahut kam reactive hain. 3.4Occurrence and extraction of metalsधातुओं की प्राप्ति और निष्कर्षणMetals kahan milte hain aur extraction

The earth's crust is the major source of metals (sea water also has salts). Naturally occurring elements or compounds are minerals; minerals from which a metal can be profitably extracted are ores. Ores carry impurities like soil and sand called gangue, removed first (enrichment of ores, using differences in physical/chemical properties). Extracting metals from ores and refining them is metallurgy. The method depends on the metal's place in the reactivity series. Metals ka main source earth ka crust hai (samudri paani mein bhi salts). Natural roop se milne wale elements ya compounds minerals hain; jin minerals se metal profitably nikala ja sake wo ores hain. Ores mein mitti, ret jaisi impurities — gangue — hoti hain, jo pehle hataayi jaati hain (enrichment of ores, physical/chemical properties ke farak se). Ores se metal nikaalna aur refine karna metallurgy hai. Tarika reactivity series mein metal ki jagah par depend karta hai.

Three groups, three methodsLow reactivity (Cu, Hg, Ag, Au…): some found free (Au, Ag, Pt, Cu); oxides reduced by heating alone.
Medium (Zn, Fe, Pb, Cu): found as oxides, sulphides, carbonates → convert to oxide (roasting = sulphide heated strongly in excess air; calcination = carbonate heated strongly in limited air) → reduce with carbon (or a more reactive metal).
High (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al): never found free; carbon cannot reduce their oxides → electrolytic reduction of molten chlorides (Na, Mg, Ca) or of aluminium oxide.
Teen groups, teen tarikeKam reactive (Cu, Hg, Ag, Au…): kuch free milte hain (Au, Ag, Pt, Cu); oxides ko sirf garam karke reduce.
Medium (Zn, Fe, Pb, Cu): oxides, sulphides, carbonates → oxide mein badlo (roasting = sulphide ko zyada hawa mein tez garam; calcination = carbonate ko kam hawa mein tez garam) → carbon se reduce (ya zyada reactive metal se).
High (K, Na, Ca, Mg, Al): kabhi free nahi; carbon inke oxides reduce nahi kar sakta → molten chlorides (Na, Mg, Ca) ya aluminium oxide ka electrolytic reduction.

Metals from reduction are not pure. Many (Cu, Zn, Sn, Ni, Ag, Au) are refined electrolytically: impure metal = anode, thin strip of pure metal = cathode, solution of a salt of the metal = electrolyte (for copper: acidified copper sulphate). Pure metal dissolves from the anode and an equal amount deposits on the cathode. Soluble impurities go into solution; insoluble ones settle below the anode as anode mud. Reduction se mile metals shuddh nahi hote. 3.5.1Prevention of corrosion and alloysसंक्षारण से बचाव और मिश्रातुCorrosion se bachaav aur alloys

Rusting is prevented by painting, oiling, greasing, galvanising, chrome plating, anodising or making alloys. Galvanisation = coating iron/steel with a thin layer of zinc; it protects even if the coating breaks (zinc, being more reactive, corrodes first). An alloy is a homogeneous mixture of two or more metals, or a metal and a non-metal (made by melting the main metal and dissolving the others in definite proportions). Pure iron is soft; with ~0.05% carbon it becomes hard and strong; with nickel and chromium it becomes stainless steel. An alloy with mercury is an amalgam. Alloys have lower electrical conductivity and melting point than the pure metals. Jang rokne ke upaay: paint, tel, grease lagana, galvanising, chrome plating, anodising ya alloy banana. Galvanisation = iron/steel par zinc ki patli layer; layer tootne par bhi bachaav (zinc zyada reactive hai, pehle wahi corrode hota hai). Alloy = do ya zyada metals, ya metal aur non-metal ka homogeneous mixture (main metal pighlakar baaki ko fixed ratio mein gholkar). Shuddh loha naram hai; lagbhag 0.05% carbon se hard aur strong; nickel aur chromium ke saath stainless steel. Mercury wala alloy amalgam kehlata hai.

Common alloys and gold caratsBrass = Cu + Zn · Bronze = Cu + Sn (poor conductors, unlike copper) · Solder = Pb + Sn (low melting point; joins electrical wires) · Stainless steel = Fe + Ni + Cr.
Pure gold is 24 carat (too soft). Ornaments in India are usually 22 carat: 22 parts gold + 2 parts copper or silver. The iron pillar near the Qutub Minar (over 1600 years old, 8 m, 6 tonnes) shows ancient Indian rust-proof iron-making.

(c) Protective oxide layer aage reaction rokti hai; ye halka aur heat ka accha conductor bhi hai.
13. Why are lemon or tamarind juice effective in cleaning tarnished copper vessels?13. Kaale/hare pade copper ke bartan nimbu ya imli ke ras se kyon saaf hote hain?
The green coat is basic copper carbonate. The acids in lemon (citric) and tamarind (tartaric) neutralise and dissolve it, leaving the shiny copper. Hari parat basic copper carbonate hai. Nimbu (citric) aur imli (tartaric) ke acids ise neutralise karke ghol dete hain, chamakdaar copper bachta hai.

Metals: form basic oxides (some amphoteric); lose electrons → positive ions; many displace H₂ from dilute acids; form ionic chlorides. Non-metals: form acidic or neutral oxides; gain electrons → negative ions; do not displace H₂ from dilute acids; form covalent hydrides with hydrogen.
15. A "goldsmith" dipped old gold bangles in a solution; they sparkled but lost much weight. What was the solution?15. Ek "sunaar" ne purane sone ke kangan ek solution mein dubaye; wo chamak uthe par weight bahut ghat gaya. Solution kya tha?
**Aqua regia** (conc. HCl : conc. HNO₃ = 3 : 1). It dissolved the outer layer of gold, so the bangles shone but weighed less.**अम्लराज** (सांद्र HCl : सांद्र HNO₃ = 3 : 1)। **Aqua regia** (conc. HCl : conc. HNO₃ = 3 : 1). Isne sone ki bahari parat ghol di, isliye kangan chamke par weight ghata.
16. Why is copper used to make hot water tanks and not steel (an alloy of iron)?16.
Copper does not react with water, even hot water or steam, so it does not corrode. Iron in steel reacts with steam and rusts. Copper is also a better conductor of heat. Copper paani, garam paani ya steam se bhi react nahi karta, isliye corrode nahi hota. Steel ka loha steam se react karke jang khaata hai. Copper heat ka behtar conductor bhi hai.
