Electrolytic refining of copperकॉपर का विद्युत अपघटनी परिष्करण
NCERT Fig 3.12 · interactive diagram
Parts and their functions
- Anode — impure copper (+) (ऐनोड — अशुद्ध कॉपर (+)) — The impure metal is made the anode. Copper from it dissolves into the electrolyte as Cu²⁺.
- Cathode — thin strip of pure copper (−) (कैथोड — शुद्ध कॉपर की पतली पट्टी (−)) — An equivalent amount of pure copper from the electrolyte is deposited on it.
- Electrolyte — acidified copper sulphate solution (विद्युत अपघट्य — अम्लीकृत कॉपर सल्फ़ेट विलयन) — A solution of a salt of the same metal is used. Soluble impurities go into the solution.
- Cu²⁺ ions move to the cathode (Cu²⁺ आयन कैथोड की ओर) — Pure metal travels from anode to cathode through the solution.
- Anode mud (ऐनोड पंक) — Insoluble impurities settle at the bottom below the anode.
- Battery (बैटरी) — Anode joined to the positive terminal, cathode to the negative terminal.
