Parts and their functions
- Iron nail (cleaned) (लोहे की कील (साफ़)) — Rub with sandpaper first. Iron is more reactive than copper.
- Thread (धागा) — The nail is tied with a thread and dipped in the solution for about 20 minutes.
- Copper sulphate solution (blue) (कॉपर सल्फ़ेट विलयन (नीला)) — Blue colour is due to copper sulphate (CuSO₄).
- Iron sulphate solution (light green) (आयरन सल्फ़ेट विलयन (हल्का हरा)) — Iron displaced copper, so the solution now has FeSO₄ — blue colour fades.
- Brownish copper coating (भूरी कॉपर परत) — Copper metal deposits on the nail — so the nail becomes brownish.
