Introduction

Everything falls towards the earth, and the planets move round the sun. Newton realised that the same force — gravitation — explains both. Earlier, Ptolemy’s geocentric model put the earth at the centre; Aryabhata (5th century AD) and later Copernicus proposed a sun-centred (heliocentric) model. Tycho Brahe’s careful observations were analysed by Johannes Kepler, who found three laws. Har cheez earth ki taraf girti hai aur planets sun ke chaaron or ghoomte hain.

Newton compared the moon’s centripetal acceleration (a_m = 4π²R_m/T² ≈ 0.0027 m s⁻²) with g; the ratio ≈ (R_E/R_m)² ≈ 1/3600, as expected for a 1/r² force. Every particle attracts every other particle with a force F = Gm₁m₂/r², along the line joining them. The force obeys superposition. Two results: a uniform spherical shell attracts an outside point mass as if all its mass were at its centre, and exerts no net force on a point mass inside it. Moon ka centripetal acceleration ≈ 0.0027 m s⁻², g ka 1/3600 — 1/r² force. Har particle har doosre ko F = Gm₁m₂/r² se kheenchta hai. Superposition. Uniform shell: bahar wale ke liye saara mass centre par; andar wale par koi net force nahi.

7.4The gravitational constantगुरुत्वीय नियतांकGravitational constant

G was first measured by Henry Cavendish (1798) with a torsion balance: two small lead spheres on a rod hung by a fine wire are attracted by two large spheres; the twist of the wire gives the force. Cavendish (1798) ne torsion balance se G naapa. G = 6.67 × 10⁻¹¹ N m² kg⁻².

7.5Acceleration due to gravity of the earthपृथ्वी का गुरुत्वीय त्वरणEarth ka g

Treating the earth as concentric shells, a mass outside it feels F = GM_Em/r². At the surface, g = GM_E/R_E². Since g and R_E are measurable, M_E = gR_E²/G — this is how the earth is “weighed”. सतह पर g = GM_E/R_E²। Surface par g = GM_E/R_E². M_E = gR_E²/G — earth ko “taulna”.

7.6Acceleration due to gravity below and above the surface of earthपृथ्वी की सतह के नीचे और ऊपर गुरुत्वीय त्वरणSurface ke upar aur neeche g

Above (height h): g(h) = GM_E/(R_E + h)² ≈ g(1 − 2h/R_E) for h ≪ R_E. Below (depth d): the outer shell exerts no force, the inner sphere has mass M_E(R_E − d)³/R_E³ ⇒ g(d) = g(1 − d/R_E). So g is greatest at the surface and zero at the centre (Fig 7.7–7.8). Gravitational potential energy

Gravity is conservative, so it has a potential energy. Near the surface, W₁₂ = mg(h₂ − h₁). In general, taking zero at infinity, V(r) = −GMm/r (for r ≥ R_E). The gravitational potential is PE per unit mass, −GM/r. For a system of particles, add −Gmᵢmⱼ/rᵢⱼ over every pair. Gravity conservative ⇒ PE. The projectile only has to reach this point; then the bigger sphere pulls it in. 7.8Escape speedपलायन चालEscape speed

The minimum speed needed to escape to infinity from the surface: ½mv² − GMm/R_E ≥ 0 ⇒ v_e = √(2GM/R_E) = √(2gR_E) ≈ 11.2 km s⁻¹. It does not depend on the mass of the body or the direction of projection. For the moon v_e ≈ 2.3 km s⁻¹ — so gas molecules escape easily and the moon has no atmosphere. Infinity tak jaane ki minimum speed: v_e = √(2gR_E) ≈ 11.2 km s⁻¹.
