Variation of g with distance from the earth’s centreपृथ्वी के केंद्र से दूरी के साथ g का परिवर्तन

Parts and their functions
- Below the surface (सतह के नीचे) — Only the inner sphere of radius (R − d) pulls: g(d) = g(1 − d/R), linear in r; zero at the centre.
- Above the surface (सतह के ऊपर) — g(h) = GM/(R + h)², falling as 1/r².
- At the surface (सतह पर) — g = GM/R² ≈ 9.8 m s⁻² is the largest value.
- Small height (कम ऊँचाई) — For h ≪ R, g(h) ≈ g(1 − 2h/R): g falls twice as fast with height as with depth.
