Introduction
A wave is a disturbance that travels through a medium, carrying energy and momentum without carrying matter along. Ripples on a pond, sound and the vibrations of a guitar string are mechanical waves — they need a medium and obey Newton’s laws. Light and radio are electromagnetic waves (they need no medium); this chapter deals with mechanical waves. Wave = disturbance jo energy le jaata hai, matter nahi. Sound, string ke vibrations = mechanical waves (medium chahiye).
Transverse aur longitudinal waves
In a transverse wave the particles of the medium oscillate perpendicular to the direction of travel (a pulse on a string: crests and troughs). In a longitudinal wave they oscillate along the direction of travel (sound: compressions and rarefactions) (Fig 14.3–14.4). Transverse waves need shear rigidity, so they travel in solids and on strings but not inside fluids; longitudinal waves travel in solids, liquids and gases. Water-surface waves are a mix of both. Transverse: particles ⟂ direction (string). Longitudinal: particles direction ke along (sound — compression, rarefaction) (Fig 14.3–14.4). Gas mein sirf longitudinal.

Amplitude aur phase
a is the amplitude — the largest displacement of any particle. (kx − ωt + φ) is the phase; φ is the initial phase (phase at x = 0, t = 0) (Fig 14.7).a = आयाम — किसी कण का अधिकतम विस्थापन। a = amplitude, (kx − ωt + φ) = phase, φ = initial phase (Fig 14.7).

The wavelength λ is the distance between two consecutive points in the same phase (crest to crest). The angular wave number k = 2π/λ (rad m⁻¹). λ = crest se crest; k = 2π/λ.
Period, ω aur frequency
Each particle does SHM with period T; ω = 2π/T is the angular frequency and ν = 1/T = ω/2π the frequency. Har particle SHM karta hai: ω = 2π/T, ν = 1/T.
14.4The speed of a travelling waveप्रगामी तरंग की चालTravelling wave ki speed
A fixed phase kx − ωt = constant moves with v = ω/k = λ/T = νλ. The speed depends only on the medium: on its elastic property (restoring force) and its inertia (density). v = ω/k = νλ. Speed sirf medium par: elasticity aur inertia.
14.4.1Speed of a transverse wave on a stretched stringतनी डोरी पर अनुप्रस्थ तरंग की चालString par transverse wave ki speed
With tension T and mass per unit length μ, dimensional analysis (and the exact derivation) gives v = √(T/μ). Tension T, μ = mass/length ⇒ v = √(T/μ).
14.4.2Speed of a longitudinal wave (speed of sound)अनुदैर्ध्य तरंग की चाल (ध्वनि की चाल)Longitudinal wave (sound) ki speed
For a medium of bulk modulus B and density ρ, v = √(B/ρ); for a solid rod, v = √(Y/ρ). Newton took the compressions in air to be isothermal (B = P) and got v = √(P/ρ) ≈ 280 m s⁻¹ — too low. Laplace pointed out they are adiabatic (too fast for heat to flow), so B = γP and v = √(γP/ρ) ≈ 331 m s⁻¹, matching experiment. Since P/ρ = RT/M, v = √(γRT/M): it is independent of pressure and rises with temperature. v = √(B/ρ); rod mein √(Y/ρ). Newton: isothermal ⇒ 280 m/s (kam). Laplace: adiabatic ⇒ v = √(γP/ρ) ≈ 331 m/s. v = √(γRT/M).
14.5The principle of superposition of wavesतरंगों के अध्यारोपण का सिद्धांतSuperposition ka principle
When two or more waves overlap, the resultant displacement is the algebraic sum of the individual displacements: y = y₁ + y₂ + …. For two waves of equal amplitude and frequency differing in phase by φ, the resultant amplitude is 2a cos(φ/2): 2a when in phase (constructive interference), zero when φ = π (destructive interference). Overlap par displacements jud jaate hain. Amplitude 2a cos(φ/2): in phase 2a (constructive), φ = π par zero (destructive).
Waves ka reflection
At a rigid boundary a wave is reflected with a phase change of π (a crest returns as a trough). At an open (free) boundary it is reflected with no phase change. Rigid boundary: phase change π (crest → trough). Free end: koi phase change nahi.

14.15 A metre-long tube, open at one end with a movable piston at the other, resonates with a 340 Hz tuning fork when the air column is 25.5 cm or 79.3 cm long. Estimate the speed of sound. (सिरा-प्रभाव नगण्य)14.15 Resonance at 25.5 cm aur 79.3 cm, 340 Hz. v?
From the first resonance: λ = 4 × 0.255 = 1.02 m ⇒ v = 340 × 1.02 ≈ 347 m s⁻¹ (the book’s answer).
Note: the two lengths are not exactly in the ratio 1 : 3. Using their difference (= λ/2) gives λ = 1.076 m and v ≈ 366 m s⁻¹; in a real tube the difference method is preferred because it cancels the end correction.
λ = 4 × 0.255 ⇒ 347 m/s (difference se ≈ 366 m/s).

खुली: 850 Hz, 1700 Hz … Closed: 425 Hz ⇒ fundamental; open: 850 Hz ⇒ nahi.
14.18 Two sitar strings A and B playing ‘Ga’ produce 6 beats per second. When A’s tension is slightly reduced the beats fall to 3 per second. If A was originally 324 Hz, what is B’s frequency?14.18 सितार के दो तार A और B ‘ग’ बजाते हुए 6 विस्पंद/s उत्पन्न करते हैं। यदि A की मूल आवृत्ति 324 Hz थी तो B की आवृत्ति क्या है?14.18 Beats 6 → 3 jab A ka tension kam. ν_A = 324. ν_B?
14.19 Explain why (or how): (a) in a sound wave a displacement node is a pressure antinode and vice versa (b) bats can find the distance, direction, nature and size of obstacles without eyes (c) a violin note and a sitar note of the same frequency can be told apart (d) solids carry both longitudinal and transverse waves but gases only longitudinal (e) a pulse changes shape in a dispersive medium.14.19 समझाइए क्यों (या कैसे): (a) ध्वनि तरंग में विस्थापन निस्पंद दाब प्रस्पंद होता है और विलोमतः (b) चमगादड़ बिना आँखों के बाधाओं की दूरी, दिशा, प्रकृति और आकार जान लेते हैं (c) समान आवृत्ति के वायलिन और सितार स्वरों में भेद किया जा सकता है (d) ठोस अनुदैर्ध्य और अनुप्रस्थ दोनों तरंगें, पर गैसें केवल अनुदैर्ध्य तरंगें संचरित करती हैं (e) परिक्षेपी माध्यम में स्पंद की आकृति विकृत हो जाती है।14.19 Explain (a)–(e).
(b) Bats emit ultrasound and read the echoes: the delay gives distance, the direction of the strongest echo gives direction, and the strength and frequency make-up of the echo tell them the nature and size of the object.
(c) Each instrument produces a different mix of overtones (harmonics) with the fundamental — a different quality (timbre).
(d) Transverse waves need shear rigidity; solids have a shear modulus, gases have none — they resist only compression.
(e) A pulse is a mix of many wavelengths; in a dispersive medium these travel at different speeds, so they fall out of step and the shape spreads.(a)
(a) Node par pressure change max. (b) Echo se doori, disha, size. (c) Overtones alag (quality). (d) Gas mein shear rigidity nahi. (e) Alag λ alag speed.
