Parts and their functions
- Snapshot of the wave at an instant (किसी क्षण तरंग का चित्र) — y(x, t) = a sin(kx − ωt + φ) travels along +x; kx + ωt would travel along −x.
- Amplitude a (आयाम a) — Maximum displacement of a particle from its mean position.
- Wavelength λ (तरंगदैर्ध्य λ) — Distance between two consecutive points in the same phase (crest to crest). k = 2π/λ is the angular wave number.
- Crest (शृंग) — Point of maximum positive displacement.
- Trough (गर्त) — Point of maximum negative displacement.
- Wave speed v = ω/k = νλ (तरंग चाल v = ω/k = νλ) — In one period T the wave advances one wavelength: v = λ/T = νλ.
