Introduction
Thermodynamics deals with heat and temperature and the inter-conversion of heat and other forms of energy. It is a macroscopic science: it describes a system by a few measurable quantities — pressure, volume, temperature, internal energy — not by the motion of individual molecules. Thermodynamics = heat, temperature aur heat ↔ energy conversion ki padhai. Macroscopic: P, V, T, U jaise measurable quantities se system ko describe karta hai.
11.2Thermal equilibriumतापीय साम्यThermal equilibrium
A system is in equilibrium when its macroscopic variables (P, V, T, mass, composition) do not change with time. Two gases separated by an adiabatic wall (insulating, no heat flow) stay independent; separated by a diathermic wall (conducting) heat flows until both reach the same temperature — thermal equilibrium. Variables time ke saath na badlein = equilibrium. Adiabatic wall = heat nahi jaati; diathermic wall = heat jaati hai jab tak T barabar na ho — thermal equilibrium.
Zeroth law
If two systems are each in thermal equilibrium with a third system, they are in thermal equilibrium with each other (Fig 11.2). The common property that becomes equal is temperature, and the third system acts as a thermometer. It is called “zeroth” because it was stated after the first and second laws but is logically more basic. A aur B dono C ke saath equilibrium mein ⇒ A aur B bhi aapas mein equilibrium mein (Fig 11.2). Barabar hone wali property = temperature; C thermometer jaisa.

The internal energy U of a gas is the sum of the kinetic and potential energies of its molecules in the frame in which the gas as a whole is at rest. It is a state variable: it depends only on the state (P, V, T), not on how the state was reached. For an ideal gas U depends only on T.गैस की आंतरिक ऊर्जा U उसके अणुओं की गतिज और स्थितिज ऊर्जाओं का योग है (उस निर्देश-तंत्र में जिसमें गैस समग्र रूप से विराम में है)। Internal energy U = molecules ki KE + PE (gas rest mein ho us frame mein). State variable — sirf state par depend, raaste par nahi. Ideal gas: U sirf T par.
U can be changed in two ways: by heat (energy transfer due to a temperature difference) or by work (e.g. pushing a piston). Heat and work are not state variables — they are modes of energy transfer, and a system “has” internal energy, not heat or work.U U badalne ke do tareeke: heat (temperature difference se) ya work (piston dhakelna). Heat aur work state variable nahi — energy transfer ke modes hain.
First law
This is the law of conservation of energy applied to heat (Fig 11.4). Sign convention: ΔQ is positive when heat is supplied to the system; ΔW is positive when work is done by the system. For a gas, ΔW = P ΔV, so ΔQ = ΔU + P ΔV. ΔQ and ΔW depend on the path; ΔU = ΔQ − ΔW does not. Energy conservation heat ke liye (Fig 11.4). Heat diya ⇒ ΔQ +; system ne work kiya ⇒ ΔW +. Gas: ΔQ = ΔU + PΔV. ΔQ, ΔW path par depend; ΔU nahi.

Heat capacity S = ΔQ/ΔT; specific heat capacity s = ΔQ/(m ΔT) (J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹); molar specific heat C = ΔQ/(μ ΔT) (J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹). For solids, C ≈ 3R (Dulong–Petit, from equipartition). Water has a very high s (4186 J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹, varying slightly with temperature), which is why it is used as a coolant and moderates climate. S = ΔQ/ΔT; s = ΔQ/(mΔT); C = ΔQ/(μΔT). Solids: C ≈ 3R. Water ki s badi (4186) — coolant, climate moderate.
For gases two specific heats are defined: C_v at constant volume and C_p at constant pressure. At constant pressure the gas also does work, so C_p > C_v. For an ideal gas, C_p − C_v = R (Mayer’s relation): at constant P, ΔQ = ΔU + PΔV and PΔV = μRΔT per mole gives the extra R.गैसों के लिए दो विशिष्ट ऊष्माएँ: स्थिर आयतन पर C_v और स्थिर दाब पर C_p। Gas: C_v (V const) aur C_p (P const). P const par gas work bhi karti ⇒ C_p > C_v. Ideal gas: C_p − C_v = R.
11.7Thermodynamic state variables and equation of stateऊष्मागतिक अवस्था चर तथा अवस्था समीकरणState variables aur equation of state
An equilibrium state is fixed by a few state variables (P, V, T, U, mass…). They may be extensive (scale with the size of the system: V, U, mass) or intensive (do not: P, T, density). The relation connecting them is the equation of state; for an ideal gas, PV = μRT. A non-equilibrium state (e.g. during a sudden free expansion) has no well-defined P and T.साम्य अवस्था कुछ अवस्था चरों (P, V, T, U, द्रव्यमान…) State variables: P, V, T, U. Extensive (size ke saath: V, U, mass) ya intensive (P, T, density). Equation of state: PV = μRT. Non-equilibrium state mein P, T defined nahi.

Temperature constant (gas in a conducting cylinder in contact with a large reservoir, changed slowly). For an ideal gas PV = constant and ΔU = 0, so ΔQ = W = μRT ln(V₂/V₁) (Fig 11.8). 11.8.3Adiabatic processरुद्धोष्म प्रक्रमAdiabatic process
The system is insulated: ΔQ = 0. For an ideal gas PVᵞ = constant, γ = C_p/C_v, so the adiabatic curve is steeper than the isothermal one. Work done by the gas from (P₁, V₁, T₁) to (P₂, V₂, T₂): W = μR(T₁ − T₂)/(γ − 1). In adiabatic expansion W > 0, so T falls (ΔU = −W); in compression the gas heats up. Reversible aur irreversible process
A process is reversible if it can be retraced so that both the system and the surroundings return exactly to their original states. Real processes are irreversible for two reasons: they pass through non-equilibrium states (free expansion, a hot body cooling in air, an explosion) and they involve dissipative effects (friction, viscosity, electrical resistance). A quasi-static process with no dissipation is reversible — an idealisation. Reversible: ulta chalakar system aur surroundings dono wapas same. Real processes irreversible: non-equilibrium states + friction, viscosity jaise losses. Quasi-static + no friction = reversible (ideal).

The most efficient engine working between a hot reservoir at T₁ and a cold one at T₂ is a reversible engine. Carnot’s cycle for an ideal gas (Fig 11.9) has four reversible steps: isothermal expansion at T₁ (absorbs Q₁), adiabatic expansion (T₁ → T₂), isothermal compression at T₂ (rejects Q₂), adiabatic compression (T₂ → T₁).T₁ ताप के गर्म भंडार और T₂ के ठंडे भंडार के बीच सबसे दक्ष इंजन उत्क्रमणीय इंजन है। Sabse efficient = reversible engine. 11.8 A system goes from D to E by the linear process in the figure (D: 2 m³, 600 N m⁻²; E: 5 m³, 300 N m⁻²). Its volume is then reduced to the original value from E to F by an isobaric process. Calculate the total work done by the gas from D to E to F.11.8 एक निकाय चित्र के रैखिक प्रक्रम द्वारा D से E तक जाता है (D: 2 m³, 600 N m⁻²; E: 5 m³, 300 N m⁻²)। 11.8 D(2 m³, 600) → E(5 m³, 300) linear, phir E → F isobaric (V = 2). Total work?
E → F: W = 300 × (2 − 5) = −900 J (on the gas).
Total = 1350 − 900 = 450 J = area of triangle DEF = ½ × 3 × 300.([[dg:b11p-def-cycle|चित्र]]) D → E: ½(600 + 300) × 3 = 1350 J।
E → F: 300 × (2 − 5) = −900 J।
D → E: 1350 J; E → F: −900 J ⇒ 450 J (triangle area).
