Introduction
Kinetic theory explains the behaviour of gases from the idea that a gas is made of rapidly moving molecules. It gives a molecular meaning to pressure and temperature, explains the gas laws, Avogadro’s hypothesis and specific heats, and estimates molecular sizes and speeds. Maxwell, Boltzmann and others developed it in the 19th century. Gas = tez chalne wale molecules. Kinetic theory pressure aur temperature ka molecular matlab, gas laws, Avogadro aur specific heat samjhaati hai.
Matter ki molecular nature
Dalton’s atomic theory and Avogadro’s law (equal volumes of all gases at the same temperature and pressure contain equal numbers of molecules) support the molecular picture. Molecules are about 1 Å (10⁻¹⁰ m) in size. In solids they are tightly packed (≈ 2 Å apart); in gases they are far apart and move freely except during collisions. Dalton theory aur Avogadro law (same T, P par same volume = same number of molecules). Molecule size ≈ 1 Å. Solid mein paas-paas, gas mein door-door.
12.2 18 g of water = 1 mol occupies 18 × 10⁻⁶ m³: volume per molecule = 18 × 10⁻⁶/6 × 10²³ = 3 × 10⁻²⁹ m³, radius ≈ 2 Å.
12.3 In vapour each molecule has 3 × 10⁻²⁹/(6 × 10⁻⁴) = 5 × 10⁻²⁶ m³; spacing ≈ (5 × 10⁻²⁶)^(1/3) ≈ 40 Å.
Solved (NCERT Examples 12.1–12.3)12.1: 6 × 10⁻⁴; 12.2: 3 × 10⁻²⁹ m³ (r ≈ 2 Å); 12.3: spacing ≈ 40 Å.
Gases ka behaviour
At low pressure and high temperature real gases obey PV = KT, where K ∝ number of molecules N: K = Nk_B, with Boltzmann constant k_B = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹. So PV = Nk_BT = μRT, with μ = N/N_A moles and R = N_A k_B = 8.314 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹. A gas obeying this exactly at all P and T is an ideal gas; real gases approach it as P → 0 (Fig 12.1). PV = Nk_BT = μRT, k_B = 1.38 × 10⁻²³ J K⁻¹, R = 8.314. Hamesha follow kare = ideal gas; real gas low P par ideal jaisi (Fig 12.1).

Assumptions: a gas has a very large number of molecules in random motion; their own volume is negligible; they do not interact except during brief elastic collisions with each other and the walls. Bahut saare molecules random motion mein; apna volume negligible; sirf elastic collisions mein interact.

From P = ⅓nmv̄², PV = ⅔E where E = N·½mv̄² is the total translational kinetic energy. Comparing with PV = Nk_BT gives ½mv̄² = (3/2)k_BT: the average kinetic energy of a molecule is proportional to the absolute temperature and independent of P, V or the kind of gas. अतः v_rms = √(3k_BT/m) = √(3RT/M)।PV = ⅔E ⇒ ½mv̄² = (3/2)k_BT — average KE ∝ T. v_rms = √(3k_BT/m) = √(3RT/M).

Each independent way a molecule can store energy (a degree of freedom) that appears as a squared term in the energy gets, on average, ½k_BT in thermal equilibrium. Translational and rotational degrees get ½k_BT each; a vibrational mode has both kinetic and potential terms and gets k_BT (Fig 12.5). Har degree of freedom (squared term) ko average ½k_BT. 12.10 Estimate the mean free path and collision frequency of a nitrogen molecule in a cylinder of nitrogen at 2.0 atm and 17 °C. Take the radius of a molecule as about 1.0 Å. Compare the collision time with the time between two successive collisions. 12.10 N₂ at 2 atm, 17 °C, r = 1 Å. Mean free path, collision frequency, compare times.
l = 1/(√2 π d² n) = 1/(1.414 × 3.14 × 4 × 10⁻²⁰ × 5.1 × 10²⁵) ≈ 1.1 × 10⁻⁷ m (key: 1.0 × 10⁻⁷ m).
v_rms = √(3RT/M) = √(3 × 8.31 × 290/0.028) ≈ 5.1 × 10² m s⁻¹; collision frequency = v/l ≈ 4.6 × 10⁹ s⁻¹.
Collision time ≈ d/v ≈ 4 × 10⁻¹³ s; time between collisions ≈ l/v ≈ 2 × 10⁻¹⁰ s — about 500 times longer, so molecules move freely almost all the time.n = 5.1 × 10²⁵ m⁻³, d = 2.0 × 10⁻¹⁰ m ⇒ l ≈ 1.1 × 10⁻⁷ m।
l ≈ 1.1 × 10⁻⁷ m; v_rms ≈ 510 m/s; frequency ≈ 4.6 × 10⁹ s⁻¹; free time collision time ka ≈ 500 guna.
