Why does a kettle lid rattle, why are railway tracks laid with gaps, why do we wear white in summer? This chapter answers such questions using the ideas of temperature and heat, and the ways heat is stored and transferred. Ketli ka dhakkan kyon khadakta, rail ki patriyon mein gap kyon, garmi mein safed kapde kyon? Temperature, heat aur heat transfer se jawab.
Temperature aur heat
Temperature is a measure of the “hotness” of a body; it decides the direction of heat flow. Heat is energy transferred from one body to another because of a temperature difference (SI unit joule; older unit calorie, 1 cal = 4.186 J). Heat flows from higher to lower temperature until thermal equilibrium. Temperature = garmaahat ka maap; heat ki disha tay karta. Heat = temperature difference se transfer energy (J; 1 cal = 4.186 J). Thermal equilibrium tak bahti.
Temperature ka maapan
A thermometer uses a property that changes with temperature (expansion of mercury, resistance, gas pressure). Two fixed points define a scale: ice point and steam point — 0 °C and 100 °C on the Celsius scale, 32 °F and 212 °F on the Fahrenheit scale (Fig 10.1). t_F = (9/5)t_C + 32. t_F = (9/5)t_C + 32।Thermometer koi badalta gun use karta. Do fixed points: Celsius 0 aur 100, Fahrenheit 32 aur 212 (Fig 10.1). t_F = (9/5)t_C + 32.

All gases at low density behave alike. Boyle’s law: PV = constant (T fixed). Charles’ law: V/T = constant (P fixed). Together: PV = μRT (μ = number of moles, R = 8.31 J mol⁻¹ K⁻¹). At constant volume, pressure falls linearly with temperature; extrapolated, it reaches zero at absolute zero = −273.15 °C. The Kelvin scale starts there: T = t_C + 273.15; the triple point of water is 273.16 K.कम घनत्व पर सभी गैसें एक-सा व्यवहार करती हैं। Boyle: PV = const. Charles: V/T = const. PV = μRT (R = 8.31). Pressure zero at absolute zero = −273.15 °C. Kelvin: T = t_C + 273.15; triple point 273.16 K.
10.5Thermal expansionतापीय प्रसारThermal expansion
Most substances expand on heating. Linear: ΔL/L = α_l ΔT. Area: ΔA/A = α_a ΔT. Volume: ΔV/V = α_v ΔT. For an isotropic solid α_a = 2α_l and α_v = 3α_l. Metals have larger α than glass; for an ideal gas α_v = 1/T (large). Gaps in railway tracks, loose telephone wires in summer and shrink-fitting iron rims are applications. क्षेत्र: ΔA/A = α_a ΔT। Linear: ΔL/L = α_l ΔT; area α_a = 2α_l; volume α_v = 3α_l. Gas: α_v = 1/T. Rail gap, dheele taar, iron ring chadhaana.
Anomalous expansion of water: from 0 °C to 4 °C water contracts on heating, so its density is maximum at 4 °C (Fig 10.6). Lakes therefore freeze from the top, and aquatic life survives below. Paani ka anomalous expansion: 0–4 °C par sikudta; density 4 °C par max (Fig 10.6). Heat needed for a temperature change: ΔQ = m s ΔT. Specific heat capacity s (J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹) depends on the substance; heat capacity S = ms. Water has an unusually high s = 4186 J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹ — it is used as a coolant and in hot-water bags, and it moderates coastal climate. Molar specific heat C = s × M; for gases C_p (constant pressure) > C_v (constant volume). ΔQ = m s ΔT. In an isolated system, heat lost = heat gained (principle of calorimetry). A calorimeter is a copper/aluminium vessel with a stirrer, kept in an insulating jacket. Isolated system mein heat lost = heat gained. 10.8Change of stateअवस्था परिवर्तनState change
Solid → liquid is melting (fusion), liquid → gas vaporisation, solid → gas directly sublimation (dry ice, iodine, camphor). During a change of state the temperature stays constant (Fig 10.10). The melting point falls with pressure (regelation: a wire passes through an ice block; skating); the boiling point rises with pressure (pressure cooker) and falls at high altitude. Solid → liquid melting, liquid → gas vaporisation, solid → gas sublimation. Heat carried by the actual movement of a fluid. Natural convection: heated fluid expands, becomes lighter and rises (sea breeze by day, land breeze at night, trade winds). Forced convection: fluid pushed by a pump or fan (car radiators, the human circulatory system). Fluid khud chalkar heat le jaata. Heat transfer by electromagnetic waves — needs no medium and travels at the speed of light (sunlight). Black bodies absorb and emit best: white clothes in summer, blackened cooking pots. A thermos flask has silvered double walls (to reflect radiation) with vacuum between them (no conduction or convection). EM waves se heat — medium nahi chahiye. The total energy emitted per second is H = eσAT⁴ (Stefan–Boltzmann law, σ = 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W m⁻² K⁻⁴, e = emissivity, 1 for a perfect blackbody); net loss to surroundings at T_s is eσA(T⁴ − T_s⁴). प्रति सेकंड कुल उत्सर्जित ऊर्जा H = eσAT⁴ (स्टीफन-बोल्ट्ज़मान नियम, σ = 5.67 × 10⁻⁸ W m⁻² K⁻⁴, e = उत्सर्जकता); परिवेश T_s में कुल हानि eσA(T⁴ − T_s⁴)।Spectrum continuous.
