Chemistry ka importance

Chemistry is the branch of science that studies the composition, properties and interaction of matter. It touches daily life: fertilisers and pesticides for better crops, life-saving medicines (cisplatin and taxol for cancer, AZT for AIDS), safer refrigerants that replaced ozone-depleting CFCs, and new materials such as superconducting ceramics, conducting polymers and optical fibres. Chemists are also working on environmental problems like the greenhouse effect. Chemistry science ki wo branch hai jo matter ke composition, properties aur interaction ko study karti hai. Ye roz ki zindagi se judi hai: achhi fasal ke liye fertilisers aur pesticides, jaan bachane wali dawaiyan (cancer ke liye cisplatin aur taxol, AIDS ke liye AZT), ozone ko nuksaan dene wale CFCs ki jagah safe refrigerants, aur superconducting ceramics, conducting polymers, optical fibres jaise naye materials. Greenhouse effect jaisi problems par bhi chemists kaam kar rahe hain.

Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space. It exists in three physical states: solid (particles held close in an orderly way — definite volume and shape), liquid (particles close but free to move — definite volume, shape of the container) and gas (particles far apart and moving fast — neither definite volume nor shape). The states interconvert by changing temperature and pressure: solid ⇌ liquid ⇌ gas. Matter wo hai jisme mass ho aur jo jagah ghere. Ye teen states mein hota hai: solid (particles order mein paas-paas — fixed volume aur shape), liquid (particles paas par move karte hain — fixed volume, shape bartan jaisi) aur gas (particles door-door, tez — na fixed volume, na shape). Temperature aur pressure badalkar states badalti hain: solid ⇌ liquid ⇌ gas.

By composition, matter is a mixture or a pure substance. A mixture is homogeneous (uniform, e.g. air, sugar solution) or heterogeneous (non-uniform, e.g. salt and sugar, grains with dirt); its parts can be separated by physical methods such as handpicking, filtration, crystallisation and distillation. Pure substances are elements (one kind of atom or molecule: Na, Cu; H₂, O₂) or compounds (atoms of different elements in a fixed ratio: H₂O, CO₂, NH₃, CH₄). A compound has properties different from its elements — water extinguishes fire although hydrogen burns and oxygen supports burning. Pure substance element (ek hi type ke atoms/molecules: Na, Cu; H₂, O₂) ya compound (alag elements ke atoms fixed ratio mein: H₂O, CO₂, NH₃, CH₄) hote hain. Compound ki properties uske elements se alag hoti hain — hydrogen jalti hai, oxygen jalne mein madad karti hai, par paani aag bujhata hai.

1.3Properties of matter and their measurementद्रव्य के गुणधर्म और उनका मापनMatter ki properties aur unka measurement

Physical aur chemical properties

Physical properties (colour, odour, melting point, boiling point, density) can be measured without changing the identity of the substance. Chemical properties (composition, combustibility, reactivity with acids and bases) need a chemical change to be observed. Many properties are quantitative — they have a number and a unit. Physical properties (rang, smell, melting point, boiling point, density) substance ki pehchaan badle bina naape jaate hain. Chemical properties (composition, jalne ki kshamta, acids-bases se reactivity) dekhne ke liye chemical change chahiye. Zyadatar properties quantitative hoti hain — inme ek number aur ek unit hota hai.

1.3.2–1.3.3The International System of Units (SI)मात्रकों की अंतर्राष्ट्रीय पद्धति (SI)International System of Units (SI)

The SI system (1960) has seven base quantities: length — metre (m), mass — kilogram (kg), time — second (s), electric current — ampere (A), thermodynamic temperature — kelvin (K), amount of substance — mole (mol), luminous intensity — candela (cd). Since 2018 every base unit is defined by fixing the value of a constant of nature; e.g. the kilogram is fixed by the Planck constant h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ kg m² s⁻¹. Other units (volume m³, density kg m⁻³, speed m s⁻¹) are derived units. SI system (1960) mein saat base quantities hain: length — metre (m), mass — kilogram (kg), time — second (s), electric current — ampere (A), temperature — kelvin (K), amount of substance — mole (mol), luminous intensity — candela (cd). 2018 se har base unit kisi nature ke constant ki value fix karke define hai; jaise kilogram Planck constant h = 6.62607015 × 10⁻³⁴ kg m² s⁻¹ se. Baaki units (volume m³, density kg m⁻³, speed m s⁻¹) derived units hain. Prefixes: kilo 10³, centi 10⁻², milli 10⁻³, micro 10⁻⁶, nano 10⁻⁹, pico 10⁻¹², femto 10⁻¹⁵, mega 10⁶, giga 10⁹, deca 10.

Mass, volume aur density

Mass is the amount of matter in a body — it stays constant. Weight is the force of gravity on it and changes from place to place. Mass is measured on an analytical balance. Volume (SI unit m³) in the lab is usually in cm³ or dm³; 1 L = 1000 mL = 1000 cm³ = 1 dm³. Liquids are measured with a graduated cylinder, burette, pipette and volumetric flask (see the burette in action in the 3D titration lab). Density = mass ÷ volume (SI unit kg m⁻³, usually g cm⁻³) tells how closely the particles are packed. Mass kisi body mein matter ki matra hai — ye constant rehta hai. Measurement mein uncertainty

Scientific notation writes any number as N × 10ⁿ with one non-zero digit before the decimal: 232.508 = 2.32508 × 10², 0.00016 = 1.6 × 10⁻⁴. To multiply, multiply the N parts and add exponents; to divide, subtract exponents; to add or subtract, first make the exponents equal. Scientific notation mein number ko N × 10ⁿ likhte hain, decimal se pehle ek non-zero digit: 232.508 = 2.32508 × 10², 0.00016 = 1.6 × 10⁻⁴. Multiply mein N parts multiply kijiye aur exponents jodiye; divide mein exponents ghataiye; jodne-ghatane se pehle exponents barabar kijiye.

Precision = how close repeated measurements are to each other. Accuracy = how close they are to the true value. Three students measure a 2.00 g mass: (1.95, 1.93) is precise but not accurate; (1.94, 2.05) is neither; (2.01, 1.99) is both.परिशुद्धता = बार-बार किए मापन आपस में कितने निकट हैं। यथार्थता = वे वास्तविक मान के कितने निकट हैं। 2.00 g के द्रव्यमान पर: (1.95, 1.93) परिशुद्ध पर यथार्थ नहीं; (1.94, 2.05) दोनों नहीं; (2.01, 1.99) दोनों।Precision = baar-baar ke measurements aapas mein kitne paas hain. 2. Zeros before the first non-zero digit do not count: 0.03 → 1, 0.0052 → 2.
3. Zeros between non-zero digits count: 2.005 → 4.
4. Zeros at the right end count only if there is a decimal point: 0.200 → 3; but 100 → 1, while 100. → 3 and 100.0 → 4.
5. Exact numbers (2 balls, 20 eggs) have infinite significant figures.
6. In scientific notation all digits of N count: 4.01 × 10² → 3.

5. Exact numbers (2 balls, 20 ande) ke infinite significant figures.
6. Scientific notation mein N ke saare digits: 4.01 × 10² → 3.

In addition/subtraction the answer keeps as many decimal places as the number with the fewest decimal places: 12.11 + 18.0 + 1.012 = 31.122 → 31.1. In multiplication/division the answer keeps as many significant figures as the least precise number: 2.5 × 1.25 = 3.125 → 3.1. Rounding off: if the dropped digit is more than 5, increase the previous digit (1.386 → 1.39); if less than 5, leave it (4.334 → 4.33); if exactly 5, increase it only if it is odd (6.35 → 6.4, but 6.25 → 6.2). Addition/subtraction mein answer mein utne hi decimal places rakhiye jitne sabse kam decimal places wale number mein: 12.11 + 18.0 + 1.012 = 31.122 → 31.1. Rounding off: hataya digit 5 se zyada ho to pichla digit badhaiye (1.386 → 1.39); 5 se kam ho to waisa hi (4.334 → 4.33); exactly 5 ho to pichla digit odd ho tabhi badhaiye (6.35 → 6.4, par 6.25 → 6.2).

1.4.3Dimensional analysis (unit factor method)विमीय विश्लेषण (इकाई गुणक विधि)Dimensional analysis (unit factor method)

To change units, multiply by a unit factor (a ratio equal to 1) so that the unwanted unit cancels. Example: 3 in = 3 in × (2.54 cm / 1 in) = 7.62 cm. For 2 days in seconds: 2 d × (24 h/1 d) × (60 min/1 h) × (60 s/1 min) = 172800 s. Units are treated like numbers — they cancel and multiply. 3 in = 3 in × (2.54 cm / 1 in) = 7.62 cm।

Atomic aur molecular masses

Atoms are far too light to weigh in grams (one H atom ≈ 1.6736 × 10⁻²⁴ g), so we use the atomic mass unit. One atomic mass unit is exactly one-twelfth of the mass of one carbon-12 atom; 1 amu = 1.66056 × 10⁻²⁴ g. Today the symbol is u (unified mass). On this scale H = 1.0080 u, O = 15.995 u. Atoms itne halke hain ki unhe gram mein taulna mushkil hai (ek H atom ≈ 1.6736 × 10⁻²⁴ g), isliye atomic mass unit lete hain. Ek atomic mass unit, ek carbon-12 atom ke mass ka exactly 1/12 hissa hai; 1 amu = 1.66056 × 10⁻²⁴ g. Aajkal symbol u (unified mass) hai. Is scale par H = 1.0080 u, O = 15.995 u.

Average atomic mass: most elements are mixtures of isotopes, so we take the abundance-weighted average. Carbon: ¹²C 98.892% (12 u), ¹³C 1.108% (13.00335 u), ¹⁴C 2 × 10⁻¹⁰% (14.00317 u) → average 12.011 u. Molecular mass = sum of atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule: CH₄ = 12.011 + 4(1.008) = 16.043 u; H₂O = 18.02 u. For ionic solids like NaCl (no discrete molecules — a 3D packing of Na⁺ and Cl⁻) we use formula mass: NaCl = 23.0 + 35.5 = 58.5 u. Average atomic mass: zyadatar elements isotopes ka mixture hain, isliye abundance ke hisaab se weighted average lete hain. Carbon: ¹²C 98.892% (12 u), ¹³C 1.108% (13.00335 u), ¹⁴C 2 × 10⁻¹⁰% (14.00317 u) → average 12.011 u. Molecular mass = molecule ke saare atoms ke atomic masses ka jod: CH₄ = 12.011 + 4(1.008) = 16.043 u; H₂O = 18.02 u. The mole is the SI unit of amount of substance. One mole contains exactly 6.02214076 × 10²³ elementary entities — the Avogadro constant N_A. One mole of H atoms, H₂O molecules or NaCl formula units each have N_A particles. The mass of one mole of a substance in grams is its molar mass, numerically equal to its atomic/molecular/formula mass in u: water 18.02 g mol⁻¹, NaCl 58.5 g mol⁻¹. Mole amount of substance ki SI unit hai. Stoichiometry (Greek: stoicheion = element, metron = measure) is the calculation of masses (sometimes volumes) of reactants and products. A balanced equation gives the mole ratio. For CH₄(g) + 2O₂(g) → CO₂(g) + 2H₂O(g): 1 mol CH₄ reacts with 2 mol O₂ to give 1 mol CO₂ and 2 mol H₂O; in mass, 16 g CH₄ + 2 × 32 g O₂ → 44 g CO₂ + 2 × 18 g H₂O; in volume (gases, same T and P), 22.7 L CH₄ + 45.4 L O₂ → 22.7 L CO₂ + 45.4 L H₂O(g) at STP (0 °C, 1 bar). Stoichiometry (Greek: stoicheion = element, metron = measure) reactants aur products ke mass (kabhi volume) ki calculation hai. 1.10.1Limiting reagentसीमांत अभिकर्मकLimiting reagent

When reactants are not in the exact ratio of the balanced equation, the reactant that gets used up first stops the reaction and decides how much product forms — it is the limiting reagent; the other is in excess. Method: convert each reactant to moles, use the equation to see which runs out first. Jab reactants balanced equation ke exact ratio mein na hon, to jo reactant pehle khatam hota hai wo reaction rok deta hai aur product ki matra tay karta hai — yahi limiting reagent hai; doosra excess mein hota hai. Method: har reactant ko moles mein badaliye, equation se dekhiye kaun pehle khatam hoga.
