Key points ✍️मुख्य बातें ✍️Key points ✍️

  • Semipermeable membrane — a sheet with submicroscopic pores; small solvent molecules pass, bigger solute molecules are hindered (pig's bladder, parchment, cellophane). Semipermeable membrane — bahut chhote pores wali sheet; chhote solvent molecules nikalte hain, bade solute molecules rukte hain (pig's bladder, parchment, cellophane).
  • Osmosis — flow of solvent through an SPM from pure solvent (or dilute solution) into the solution; always from lower to higher concentration.
  • Osmotic pressure (π) — the excess pressure that must be applied on the solution to just stop osmosis. Osmotic pressure (π) — woh extra pressure jo solution par lagane se osmosis theek ruk jaaye.
  • π = CRT — for dilute solutions; C = molarity, R = gas constant, T = temperature. π = CRT — dilute solutions ke liye; C = molarity, R = gas constant, T = temperature. Saath hi π = (n₂/V)RT.
  • Molar mass — M₂ = w₂RT / (πV), V in litres. Colligative: π depends on the number of solute particles, not their identity. Molar mass — M₂ = w₂RT / (πV), V litre mein. Colligative: π solute particles ki sankhya par depend karta hai, unki identity par nahi.
  • Best for proteins & polymers — measured near room temperature, uses molarity, and π is large even for very dilute solutions; biomolecules are unstable at higher temperatures. Proteins aur polymers ke liye best — room temperature ke aaspaas measurement, molarity use hoti hai, aur bahut dilute solution mein bhi π bada; biomolecules high temperature par unstable.
  • Isotonic — two solutions with the same osmotic pressure at a given temperature; no osmosis between them. Blood-cell fluid ≈ 0.9% (m/V) NaCl = normal saline. Isotonic — diye temperature par same osmotic pressure wale do solutions; inke beech osmosis nahi. Blood cell ka fluid ≈ 0.9% (m/V) NaCl = normal saline.
  • Hypertonic / hypotonic — more than 0.9% NaCl: water flows out, cells shrink; less than 0.9%: water flows in, cells swell. Hypertonic / hypotonic — 0.9% se zyada NaCl: paani bahar, cells sikudti hain; 0.9% se kam: paani andar, cells phoolti hain.
  • Osmosis around us — raw mango shrivels in brine (pickle), wilted flowers revive in fresh water, salty food causes edema, salting meat and sugaring fruit kill bacteria. Aas-paas osmosis — brine mein kachcha aam sikudta hai (achaar), murjhaye phool fresh paani mein khil uthte hain, zyada namak se edema, meat par namak aur fruits par cheeni se bacteria marte hain.
  • Reverse osmosis — apply a pressure larger than π on the solution side; now pure solvent flows out of the solution through the SPM.
  • Desalination — pure water is squeezed out of sea water; the pressure needed is quite high. Desalination — sea water se pure water nichoda jaata hai; zaroori pressure kaafi zyada hota hai.
  • RO membrane — a film of cellulose acetate on a suitable support: permeable to water, impermeable to impurities and ions.RO RO membrane — suitable support par cellulose acetate ki film: paani ke liye permeable, impurities aur ions ke liye impermeable.
