Introduction

Liquids and gases can flow and are together called fluids. Unlike a solid, a fluid has no definite shape; it offers little resistance to shear and takes the shape of its container. Liquids are almost incompressible; gases are easily compressed. Liquid aur gas beh sakte hain — fluids. Fixed shape nahi, shear ka kam virodh. Liquid lagbhag incompressible, gas aasaani se compress.

Pressure

A fluid at rest pushes normally on any surface in contact with it. Pressure P = F/A (normal force per unit area), a scalar; unit pascal (1 Pa = 1 N m⁻²); 1 atm = 1.013 × 10⁵ Pa; 1 bar = 10⁵ Pa. Density ρ = m/V (water 1000 kg m⁻³; relative density = ρ/ρ_water). दाब P = F/A (प्रति एकांक क्षेत्रफल अभिलंब बल), अदिश; मात्रक पास्कल (1 Pa = 1 N m⁻²); 1 atm = 1.013 × 10⁵ Pa; 1 bar = 10⁵ Pa। Fluid surface par normal dhakelta hai. Pascal ka niyam

In a fluid at rest, the pressure is the same at all points at the same height, and it acts equally in all directions. A change in pressure applied to an enclosed fluid is transmitted undiminished to every point of the fluid and the walls (Pascal’s law). Same height par pressure same, har disha mein. Torricelli’s mercury barometer: the space above the mercury is a near vacuum, so Pₐ = ρgh. At sea level h = 76 cm of mercury = 1 atm (also called 760 torr or 760 mm of Hg). An open-tube manometer measures pressure differences: the difference in liquid levels gives the gauge pressure. Torricelli ka mercury barometer: Pₐ = ρgh; sea level par 76 cm Hg = 1 atm. 9.2.4Hydraulic machinesद्रवचालित मशीनेंHydraulic machines

In a hydraulic lift (Fig 9.6) a force F₁ on a small piston A₁ produces pressure F₁/A₁, transmitted to a large piston A₂: F₂ = (A₂/A₁)F₁. The large piston moves a smaller distance, so energy is not created. Hydraulic brakes use the same idea — the pedal pressure reaches all four wheels equally.द्रवचालित उत्थापक (चित्र 9.6) में छोटे पिस्टन A₁ पर बल F₁ दाब F₁/A₁ बनाता है, जो बड़े पिस्टन A₂ तक पहुँचता है: F₂ = (A₂/A₁)F₁। Hydraulic lift (Fig 9.6): F₂ = (A₂/A₁)F₁; bada piston kam chalta. 9.3Streamline flowधारारेखी प्रवाहStreamline flow

In steady (streamline) flow the velocity at each point does not change with time; the path of a fluid particle is a streamline, and streamlines never cross. For an incompressible fluid, mass conservation gives the equation of continuity: Av = constant — the fluid speeds up where the tube narrows. Above a critical speed the flow becomes turbulent (eddies, as in rapids or behind a fast boat). Steady (streamline) flow: har point par velocity same; streamlines nahi katti. Continuity: Av = constant — patli jagah tez. Critical speed ke baad turbulent.

Bernoulli ka siddhaant

Applying the work-energy theorem to an ideal fluid (non-viscous, incompressible, steady flow) along a streamline: P + ½ρv² + ρgh = constant (Fig 9.9). Each term is energy per unit volume. Where the speed is higher, the pressure is lower. For a fluid at rest it reduces to P = Pₐ + ρgh. Ideal fluid par work-energy theorem: P + ½ρv² + ρgh = constant (Fig 9.9). 9.4.1Speed of efflux: Torricelli’s lawबहिर्वाह की चाल: टॉरिसेली का नियमEfflux ki speed: Torricelli

Liquid flows out of a small hole at depth h below the open surface of a wide tank: v = √(2gh) — the speed of a body falling freely through h. If the tank is closed with pressure P above the liquid, v = √(2(P − Pₐ)/ρ + 2gh). h depth par chhed se: v = √(2gh). Band tank: v = √(2(P − Pₐ)/ρ + 2gh).

9.4.2Dynamic liftगतिक उत्थापकDynamic lift

Dynamic lift is the force on a body moving through a fluid due to unequal speeds above and below it. A spinning ball drags air round with it; air moves faster on one side, the pressure there is lower, and the ball swings (the Magnus effect). An aerofoil wing makes air flow faster over its top, so the pressure above is lower and there is an upward lift. Dynamic lift: upar-neeche alag speed se force. Spinning ball — Magnus effect. Aerofoil wing — upar hawa tez, pressure kam ⇒ lift.

Viscosity

Real fluids have internal friction between layers moving at different speeds — viscosity. For a fluid the shearing stress is proportional to the rate of shear strain (not the strain): η = (F/A)/(v/l), the coefficient of viscosity; SI unit Pa s (poiseuille). Honey and glycerine have large η; water about 10⁻³ Pa s. Viscosity of liquids decreases with temperature; that of gases increases. Layers ke beech friction — viscosity. Stress ∝ rate of shear strain: η = (F/A)/(v/l), unit Pa s.

9.6Surface tensionपृष्ठ तनावSurface tension

Molecules at the surface of a liquid have fewer neighbours, so they have extra energy. A liquid therefore tends to reduce its surface area (drops are spherical; insects walk on water). Surface ke molecules ke kam padosi ⇒ extra energy. Surface tension S is the force per unit length acting in the plane of the surface, perpendicular to any line drawn on it (N m⁻¹); it also equals the surface energy per unit area (J m⁻²). For a film on a wire frame with a slider of length l (two surfaces), F = 2Sl. S decreases with temperature and becomes zero at the critical temperature. Surface tension S = force per length (N m⁻¹) = surface energy per area. 9.6.3Angle of contactस्पर्श कोणAngle of contact

The angle θ between the liquid surface and the solid surface inside the liquid is the angle of contact. Water on glass: θ < 90°, the liquid wets and spreads (adhesion > cohesion). Detergents lower θ so water wets cloth; waterproofing agents raise it. Liquid aur solid surface ke beech angle of contact θ. 9.1 Explain why (a) blood pressure in humans is greater at the feet than at the brain (b) atmospheric pressure at about 6 km falls to nearly half its sea-level value, though the atmosphere extends beyond 100 km (c) hydrostatic pressure is a scalar even though pressure is force divided by area.9.1 समझाइए (a) मनुष्य में पैरों पर रक्त दाब मस्तिष्क से अधिक क्यों (b) वायुमंडल 100 km से ऊँचा होने पर भी लगभग 6 km पर वायुदाब आधा क्यों (c) दाब = बल/क्षेत्रफल होने पर भी द्रवस्थैतिक दाब अदिश क्यों।9.1 (a) pairon par BP zyada (b) 6 km par aadha (c) pressure scalar kyon.
(a) The column of blood above the feet is taller, so P = ρgh is larger there. (b) Air is compressible: its density is greatest near the ground and falls rapidly with height, so most of the air (half its weight) lies below about 6 km. (c) At a point in a fluid the pressure acts equally in all directions, so it has no particular direction; the force on a surface is always normal to it whatever its orientation.(a) (a) Pairon ke upar column ooncha. (b) Hawa compressible, neeche ghani. (c) Har disha mein barabar — koi direction nahi.
9.2 Explain why (a) mercury makes an obtuse angle of contact with glass, water an acute one (b) water spreads on clean glass while mercury forms drops (c) surface tension does not depend on the area of the surface (d) water with detergent should have a small angle of contact (e) a drop of liquid under no external force is spherical.9.2 समझाइए (a) काँच के साथ पारे का स्पर्श कोण अधिक, जल का न्यून क्यों (b) साफ़ काँच पर जल फैलता, पारा बूँदें बनाता (c) पृष्ठ तनाव सतह के क्षेत्रफल से स्वतंत्र (d) अपमार्जक वाले जल का स्पर्श कोण छोटा होना चाहिए (e) बाह्य बल रहित बूँद गोलीय क्यों।9.2 (a) mercury obtuse, water acute (b) water phailta (c) S area se independent (d) detergent θ chhota (e) boond gol.
(a) For mercury, cohesion (Hg–Hg) is stronger than adhesion (Hg–glass), so θ > 90°; for water, adhesion to glass is stronger, so θ < 90°. (b) Same reason: water wets glass and spreads; mercury pulls itself into drops. (c) Surface tension is the force per unit length (energy per unit area) at the surface, set by the molecular forces — it does not depend on how big the surface is. (d) Small θ means the water wets cloth fibres and gets into tiny gaps, which is needed for washing; detergents lower θ. (e) For a given volume a sphere has the least surface area, hence least surface energy.(a) (a) Mercury: cohesion > adhesion. (b) Water wets. (c) Molecular property. (d) Kapda geela ho. (e) Sphere ka area minimum.

(e) greater.(a) घटता। (a) ghatta (b) badhti; ghatti (c) shear strain; rate of shear strain (d) conservation of mass (e) zyada.
9.4 Explain why (a) to keep a paper horizontal you should blow over, not under, it (b) fast jets gush between our fingers when we try to close a tap (c) the needle size controls the flow rate better than the doctor’s thumb pressure (d) liquid flowing out of a small hole gives a backward thrust on the vessel (e) a spinning cricket ball does not follow a parabola.9.4 समझाइए (a) कागज़ को क्षैतिज रखने के लिए उसके ऊपर फूँकें, नीचे नहीं (b) नल को उँगलियों से बंद करने पर तेज़ धारें (c) सुई का आकार अंगूठे के दाब से बेहतर प्रवाह नियंत्रित करता है (d) छोटे छेद से बहता द्रव पात्र पर पीछे की ओर धक्का देता है (e) घूमती क्रिकेट गेंद परवलय पर नहीं चलती।9.4 Explain (a)–(e).
(a) Blowing over the paper makes the air above move faster, so the pressure above drops (Bernoulli) and the higher pressure below holds it up. (b) The opening becomes small, so by Av = constant the speed of water through the gaps becomes large. (c) Flow speed through the needle ∝ 1/area (continuity) and the pressure term enters only as a square root in Bernoulli, so the needle’s area dominates. (d) The jet carries momentum out of the hole; by conservation of momentum the vessel gets an equal backward momentum (thrust). (e) Spin drags air round the ball, so air speeds on the two sides differ; the pressure difference (Magnus effect) gives a sideways force, so the path curves.(a) (a) Upar hawa tez, pressure kam. Is the flow laminar?9.13 1.5 m Δp? Laminar?
Volume rate Q = 4.0 × 10⁻³/1.3 × 10³ = 3.08 × 10⁻⁶ m³ s⁻¹. Using Poiseuille’s formula for laminar flow, Δp = 8ηlQ/(πr⁴) = 8 × 0.83 × 1.5 × 3.08 × 10⁻⁶/(π × 10⁻⁸) ≈ 9.8 × 10² Pa. Check: v = Q/πr² ≈ 9.8 × 10⁻³ m s⁻¹, Reynolds number ρvd/η ≈ 0.3 — far below the turbulence range, so the flow is laminar.Q = 3.08 × 10⁻⁶ m³ s⁻¹। Δp = 8ηlQ/(πr⁴) ≈ 9.8 × 10² Pa; Re ≈ 0.3 ⇒ laminar.
