Animals accumulate ammonia, urea, uric acid, CO₂, water and ions (Na⁺, K⁺, Cl⁻, phosphate, sulphate) by metabolism or excess intake; these have to be removed totally or partially. The major forms of nitrogenous wastes are ammonia, urea and uric acid. Ammonia is the most toxic and needs large amounts of water for its elimination, whereas uric acid is the least toxic and can be removed with a minimum loss of water. Body mein ammonia, urea, uric acid, CO₂, paani aur ions jama hote hain — inhe nikaalna padta hai. Each kidney has nearly one million nephrons — the functional units. A nephron has the glomerulus (a tuft of capillaries formed by the afferent arteriole, drained by the efferent arteriole) and the renal tubule: Bowman’s capsule → proximal convoluted tubule (PCT) → hairpin Henle’s loop (descending and ascending limbs) → distal convoluted tubule (DCT) → collecting duct (many DCTs open into one; collecting ducts converge and open into the pelvis through the pyramids). 16.2Urine formationमूत्र निर्माणUrine kaise banta hai

Urine formation involves three processes: glomerular filtration, reabsorption and secretion. On average 1100–1200 mL of blood is filtered per minute (about 1/5th of the blood pumped by each ventricle per minute). Glomerular capillary blood pressure filters blood through three layers — the endothelium of glomerular blood vessels, the epithelium of Bowman’s capsule and a basement membrane between them. The capsule’s epithelial cells, podocytes, leave minute filtration slits (slit pores). Almost all plasma constituents except proteins pass into the capsule — this is ultrafiltration. Teen steps: filtration, reabsorption, secretion. ~1100–1200 mL blood/min filter hota hai. 3 layers: endothelium, basement membrane, podocytes (filtration slits). The amount of filtrate formed by the kidneys per minute is the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) — about 125 mL/min, i.e., 180 litres per day! The kidneys have built-in mechanisms to regulate GFR; one is carried out by the juxta glomerular apparatus (JGA) — a special sensitive region formed by cellular modifications in the DCT and the afferent arteriole at their point of contact. A fall in GFR activates the JG cells to release renin, which stimulates glomerular blood flow and brings the GFR back to normal. GFR ≈ 125 mL/min = 180 L/day! Since only about 1–1.5 litres of urine is released per day, nearly 99% of the filtrate is reabsorbed by the renal tubules — by active (glucose, amino acids, Na⁺) or passive transport (nitrogenous wastes; water too, mainly passively in the initial segments). During urine formation the tubular cells secrete H⁺, K⁺ and ammonia into the filtrate — important for the ionic and acid–base balance of body fluids. Roz sirf 1–1.5 L urine, matlab 99% filtrate reabsorb. 16.4Mechanism of concentration of the filtrateनिस्यंद के सांद्रण की क्रियाविधिUrine concentrate kaise hota hai

Mammals can produce concentrated urine; Henle’s loop and vasa recta play a significant role. Flow of filtrate in the two limbs of Henle’s loop is in opposite directions — a counter current; the flow of blood through the two limbs of vasa recta is also counter current. Their proximity, plus the counter current, builds an increasing osmolarity towards the inner medulla — from 300 mOsmol L⁻¹ in the cortex to about 1200 mOsmol L⁻¹ in the inner medulla — caused mainly by NaCl and urea. Henle’s loop ke dono limbs mein flow ulta (counter current), vasa recta mein bhi. Isse medulla mein gradient: 300 (cortex) → 1200 mOsmol L⁻¹ (inner medulla) — mainly NaCl + urea se.

NaCl is transported out by the ascending limb of Henle’s loop and exchanged with the descending limb of vasa recta; it is returned to the interstitium by the ascending portion of vasa recta. Similarly, small amounts of urea enter the thin segment of the ascending limb of Henle’s loop and are transported back to the interstitium by the collecting tubule. This special arrangement is the counter current mechanism; it maintains the gradient, which helps easy passage of water from the collecting tubule — so human kidneys can produce urine nearly four times more concentrated than the initial filtrate. NaCl ascending limb se bahar → vasa recta exchange karke wapas interstitium mein. Kidney ka regulation

Kidney function is regulated by hormonal feedback involving the hypothalamus, JGA and to some extent the heart. Osmoreceptors are activated by changes in blood volume, body fluid volume and ionic concentration. Excessive loss of fluid activates them → hypothalamus releases antidiuretic hormone (ADH) or vasopressin from the neurohypophysis → water reabsorption from the latter parts of the tubule increases → diuresis is prevented. An increase in body fluid volume switches off the osmoreceptors and suppresses ADH release. ADH also constricts blood vessels, raising blood pressure and thus glomerular blood flow and GFR. Control: hypothalamus, JGA, heart. Paani kam ho → osmoreceptors → ADH (vasopressin) → DCT/collecting duct se zyada paani wapas → diuresis ruk jaata. Paani zyada ho → ADH band. ADH BP bhi badhata hai → GFR badhta.

A fall in glomerular blood flow / pressure / GFR activates JG cells to release renin, which converts angiotensinogen in blood to angiotensin I and then angiotensin II. Angiotensin II, a powerful vasoconstrictor, raises glomerular blood pressure and GFR; it also activates the adrenal cortex to release aldosterone, which causes reabsorption of Na⁺ and water from distal parts of the tubule (raising BP and GFR) — the renin–angiotensin mechanism. An increase in blood flow to the atria causes release of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF), which causes vasodilation and decreases blood pressure — a check on the renin–angiotensin mechanism. GFR gire → renin → angiotensinogen → angiotensin I → II (vasoconstrictor, BP ↑) → aldosterone (Na⁺ + paani wapas) = RAAS. Atria mein blood zyada → ANF → vasodilation, BP ↓ — RAAS par check.

Micturition

Urine formed by the nephrons is stored in the urinary bladder till a voluntary signal from the central nervous system (CNS). Stretching of the filled bladder stimulates stretch receptors in its wall, which send signals to the CNS; the CNS passes motor messages to contract the bladder’s smooth muscles and simultaneously relax the urethral sphincter, releasing urine. The process is micturition and the neural mechanism is the micturition reflex. An adult excretes 1–1.5 L of urine per day — light yellow, watery, slightly acidic (pH 6.0) with a characteristic odour; on average 25–30 g of urea per day. Glycosuria (glucose) and ketonuria (ketone bodies) in urine indicate diabetes mellitus. Urine bladder mein store. 1. Define Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR).1. 1. GFR define kijiye.
The amount of filtrate formed by the kidneys per minute is called the glomerular filtration rate (GFR). In a healthy individual it is about 125 mL/min, i.e., 180 litres per day. Kidneys ek minute mein jitna filtrate banati hain = GFR ≈ 125 mL/min = 180 L/day.
2. Explain the autoregulatory mechanism of GFR.2. 2. GFR ka autoregulation.
GFR is autoregulated mainly by the juxta glomerular apparatus (JGA), a sensitive region formed by cellular modifications of the DCT and the afferent arteriole where they touch. When GFR falls, JG cells release renin → angiotensinogen → angiotensin I → angiotensin II. Angiotensin II constricts blood vessels, raising glomerular blood pressure and so GFR; it also stimulates the adrenal cortex to release aldosterone, which increases Na⁺ and water reabsorption from distal tubule parts, raising blood volume/pressure and GFR. When blood flow to the atria rises, ANF causes vasodilation and lowers pressure — a check on this mechanism.GFR JGA (DCT + afferent arteriole) control karta hai. GFR gire → renin → angiotensin I → angiotensin II (vessels sikudti, glomerular pressure ↑, GFR ↑) + aldosterone (Na⁺, paani wapas). Atria mein blood zyada → ANF → vasodilation (check).

4. Give a brief account of the counter current mechanism.4. 4. Counter current mechanism.
See counter current diagram. Filtrate flows in opposite directions in the two limbs of Henle’s loop, and blood flows in opposite directions in the two limbs of vasa recta — counter currents. The ascending limb transports NaCl out (no water follows); this NaCl is exchanged with the descending limb of vasa recta and returned to the interstitium by its ascending part. Small amounts of urea enter the thin ascending limb and are returned to the interstitium by the collecting tubule. The descending limb loses water to the salty interstitium. This builds and maintains an osmotic gradient from 300 mOsmol L⁻¹ (cortex) to about 1200 mOsmol L⁻¹ (inner medulla). As the filtrate passes down the collecting duct, water moves out into this hyperosmotic medulla (helped by ADH), so urine becomes up to four times more concentrated than the filtrate — conserving water. Diagram dekhiye counter current. Gradient 300 → 1200 mOsmol L⁻¹. Collecting duct se paani nikalta (ADH) → urine 4 guna concentrated.
5. Describe the role of liver, lungs and skin in excretion.5. 5. Liver, lungs, skin ka role.
Liver — converts ammonia into urea; its bile carries bilirubin, biliverdin, cholesterol, degraded steroid hormones, vitamins and drugs, which leave with digestive wastes. Lungs — remove large amounts of CO₂ (about 200 mL/min) and significant water daily. Skin — sweat glands secrete sweat (NaCl, small amounts of urea, lactic acid; mainly for cooling) and sebaceous glands secrete sebum (sterols, hydrocarbons, waxes) giving a protective oily covering. Liver — ammonia → urea; bile mein bilirubin, biliverdin, cholesterol, steroid hormones, vitamins, drugs. 6. Explain micturition.6. 6. Micturition.
The process of release of urine is micturition. Urine is stored in the urinary bladder. As it fills and stretches, stretch receptors in its wall send signals to the CNS. The CNS sends motor messages that cause contraction of the smooth muscles of the bladder and simultaneous relaxation of the urethral sphincter, so urine is released. This neural mechanism is the micturition reflex; it is under voluntary control in adults. An adult passes about 1–1.5 L of urine daily. Urine bahar nikalna = micturition. 8. What is meant by the term osmoregulation?8. 8. Osmoregulation.
Osmoregulation is the regulation of the water and ionic (salt) balance of body fluids so that their osmotic concentration stays constant. Kidneys do it in humans (ADH, aldosterone, counter current mechanism); protonephridia (flame cells) are mainly osmoregulatory in flatworms. Body fluids mein paani aur salts ka balance banaye rakhna = osmoregulation (humans mein kidneys, flatworms mein flame cells).
9. Terrestrial animals are generally either ureotelic or uricotelic, not ammonotelic, why?9. Land animals ammonotelic kyon nahi?
Ammonia is highly toxic and very soluble, so it must be removed quickly with a large amount of water — possible only for aquatic animals. Land animals must conserve water, so they convert ammonia into less toxic forms: urea (ureotelic — mammals, terrestrial amphibians), which needs less water, or uric acid (uricotelic — reptiles, birds, land snails, insects), excreted as paste/pellets with minimum water loss. Ammonia bahut toxic, nikaalne ke liye bahut paani chahiye — zameen par paani bachana padta hai. 10. What is the significance of juxta glomerular apparatus (JGA) in kidney function?10. JGA ka significance.
The JGA is a special sensitive region formed by cellular modifications in the DCT and the afferent arteriole at their point of contact. It regulates GFR and blood pressure: a fall in glomerular blood flow/pressure/GFR activates JG cells to release renin → angiotensin II (vasoconstriction; raises glomerular pressure and GFR) and aldosterone (Na⁺ and water reabsorption from distal tubule) — the renin–angiotensin mechanism, which brings GFR back to normal.JGA — DCT JGA (DCT + afferent arteriole ka contact) GFR aur BP control karta hai: GFR gire → renin → angiotensin II + aldosterone → GFR normal.
