Key points ✍️मुख्य बातें ✍️Key points ✍️

  • Why atoms combine — to complete the octet (duplet for K-shell); the combined system has lower energy, so it is more stable. Why atoms combine — octet (K-shell mein duplet) poora karne ke liye; judne par system ki energy kam hoti hai, isliye zyada stable.
  • Chemical bond — the force that holds atoms together. Chemical bond — woh force jo atoms ko jode rakhta hai.
  • Cation — positively charged ion formed by losing electrons: Na → Na⁺ + e⁻ (11 p, 10 e). Cation — electrons khokar bana positive ion: Na → Na⁺ + e⁻ (11 p, 10 e).
  • Anion — negatively charged ion formed by gaining electrons: Cl + e⁻ → Cl⁻; S gains two → S²⁻. Anion — electrons gain karke bana negative ion: Cl + e⁻ → Cl⁻; S do gain karta hai → S²⁻.
  • Ionic bond — electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions (Na⁺ and Cl⁻). Ionic bond — opposite charged ions (Na⁺ aur Cl⁻) ke beech electrostatic attraction force.
  • Metal + non-metal — metals generally form cations and non-metals form anions: sodium chloride, calcium oxide, magnesium sulfide. Metal + non-metal — metals aksar cations aur non-metals anions banate hain: sodium chloride, calcium oxide, magnesium sulfide.
  • Naming — cation first, then anion; simple anions end in -ide. Polyatomic ions (OH⁻, NO₃⁻, HCO₃⁻, CO₃²⁻, SO₄²⁻, NH₄⁺) usually don’t. (OH⁻, NO₃⁻, HCO₃⁻, CO₃²⁻, SO₄²⁻, NH₄⁺) प्रायः नहीं।Naming — pehle cation, phir anion; simple anions -ide par khatam. Polyatomic ions (OH⁻, NO₃⁻, HCO₃⁻, CO₃²⁻, SO₄²⁻, NH₄⁺) aksar nahi.
  • Criss-cross — write cation then anion, cross the charge numbers, divide by a common factor: Ca²⁺ Cl⁻ → CaCl₂; Al³⁺ O²⁻ → Al₂O₃; Mg²⁺ O²⁻ → MgO. Criss-cross — pehle cation phir anion, charge numbers cross kijiye, common factor se divide: Ca²⁺ Cl⁻ → CaCl₂; Al³⁺ O²⁻ → Al₂O₃; Mg²⁺ O²⁻ → MgO.
  • Crystal, not molecule — ionic compounds form 3-D crystals; in NaCl each Na⁺ has six Cl⁻ around it and vice versa. Crystal, not molecule — ionic compounds 3-D crystals banate hain; NaCl mein har Na⁺ ke chaaron taraf chhah Cl⁻ aur iska ulta.
  • Solubility — soluble in water, insoluble in kerosene and petrol (NaCl, copper sulfate). Solubility — paani mein soluble, kerosene aur petrol mein insoluble (NaCl, copper sulfate).
  • Conductivity — no conduction as a solid (ions fixed); conduct when dissolved in water (ions free to move). Conductivity — solid mein conduction nahi (ions fixed); paani mein ghulne par conduct (ions move kar sakte hain).
  • Melting point — high melting and boiling points due to strong inter-ionic attraction.
  • Formula unit mass — Na₂O = (23 × 2) + 16 = 62 u; Ca(NO₃)₂ = 40 + (14 + 48) × 2 = 164 u.सूत्र इकाई द्रव्यमान — Na₂O = (23 × 2) + 16 = 62 u; Ca(NO₃)₂ = 40 + (14 + 48) × 2 = 164 u।Formula unit mass — Na₂O = (23 × 2) + 16 = 62 u; Ca(NO₃)₂ = 40 + (14 + 48) × 2 = 164 u.
