Introduction
In Chapter 4 you saw that an electric current produces a magnetic field. In Chapter 6 you saw that a changing magnetic field produces an electric field (Faraday). Maxwell asked the reverse question: does a changing electric field produce a magnetic field? His answer was yes — and this one idea led to the prediction of electromagnetic waves. Chapter 4 mein aapne dekha ki electric current magnetic field banata hai. Chapter 6 mein aapne dekha ki badalta magnetic field electric field banata hai (Faraday). Maxwell ne ulta sawaal poochha: kya badalta electric field magnetic field banata hai? Unka jawaab tha — haan. Current makes B. Changing B makes E. Maxwell showed that changing E also makes B — and that is why light exists.
While applying Ampère’s circuital law to a charging capacitor, Maxwell found an inconsistency. He removed it by adding a new term, the displacement current. With it he wrote down a set of equations — Maxwell’s equations — which, together with the Lorentz force formula, express all the basic laws of electromagnetism. Charging capacitor par Ampère ka circuital law lagaate samay Maxwell ko ek inconsistency mili. Unhone ek naya term — displacement current — jodkar use door kiya. Iske saath unhone equations ka ek set likha — Maxwell’s equations — jo Lorentz force formula ke saath milkar electromagnetism ke saare basic laws express karte hain.
The biggest prediction of these equations: electromagnetic (EM) waves — coupled, time-varying electric and magnetic fields travelling through space. Their predicted speed came out very close to the measured speed of light, 3 × 10⁸ m/s. Conclusion: light itself is an electromagnetic wave. Maxwell thus united electricity, magnetism and light. Hertz produced and detected EM waves in the laboratory in 1887, and Marconi and others turned them into the communication revolution we live in today. In equations ki sabse badi prediction: electromagnetic (EM) waves — aapas mein jude, time ke saath badalte electric aur magnetic fields jo space mein chalte hain. Inki predicted speed measured speed of light 3 × 10⁸ m/s ke bahut paas nikli. Conclusion: light khud ek electromagnetic wave hai. Is tarah Maxwell ne electricity, magnetism aur light ko ek kar diya.
8.2Displacement Currentविस्थापन धाराDisplacement Current
Take a capacitor being charged by a time-varying current i(t). To find B at a point P near the wire, draw a circular loop of radius r around the wire with P on it (see the loop). By symmetry B is the same all around the loop, so Ampère’s law ∮B·dl = μ₀ i gives:एक संधारित्र लें जिसे समय के साथ बदलती धारा i(t) आवेशित कर रही है। Ek capacitor lijiye jise time ke saath badalti current i(t) charge kar rahi hai. Wire ke paas point P par B nikaalne ke liye wire ke chaaron or radius r ka circular loop lijiye jis par P ho (loop dekhiye). Symmetry se loop par har jagah B same hai, isliye Ampère law ∮B·dl = μ₀ i se:
Now the puzzle. Ampère’s law allows any surface whose boundary is the loop. Choose a pot-shaped surface (b) or a tiffin-box surface (c) whose bottom lies between the plates. No conduction current crosses it — no charge jumps across the gap! The left side (B·2πr) is unchanged, but the right side is now zero. Calculated one way B ≠ 0 at P, calculated another way B = 0. A law cannot give two answers, so something is missing. Ab puzzle. Ampère law mein loop jiski boundary ho aisa koi bhi surface liya ja sakta hai. Ek pot-shaped surface (b) ya tiffin-box surface (c) lijiye jiska bottom plates ke beech hai. Ise koi conduction current cross nahi karti — gap ke paar koi charge nahi koodta! Left side (B·2πr) wahi hai, par right side ab zero hai. Ek tarike se P par B ≠ 0, doosre se B = 0. Law do answer nahi de sakta, isliye kuch missing hai.Same loop, different surface → different answer. That means the old Ampère’s law is incomplete.
What does cross the bottom S between the plates? The electric field! For plates of area A with charge Q, E = Q/(ε₀A), perpendicular to S, so by Gauss’s law the electric flux through S is:पट्टिकाओं के बीच की तली S से क्या गुज़रता है? क्षेत्रफल A और आवेश Q वाली पट्टिकाओं के लिए E = Q/(ε₀A), S के लंबवत, अतः गाउस नियम से S से विद्युत फ्लक्स:Plates ke beech ke bottom S se kya guzarta hai? Electric field! Area A aur charge Q waali plates ke liye E = Q/(ε₀A), S ke perpendicular, isliye Gauss law se S se electric flux:
As the capacitor charges, Q changes and i = dQ/dt. So the flux changes too: dΦE/dt = (1/ε₀)(dQ/dt). Multiply by ε₀:संधारित्र आवेशित होते समय Q बदलता है और i = dQ/dt। Capacitor charge hote samay Q badalta hai aur i = dQ/dt. Isliye flux bhi badalta hai: dΦE/dt = (1/ε₀)(dQ/dt). ε₀ se multiply kijiye:
Maxwell called this term the displacement current id = ε₀ dΦE/dt. Add it to the conduction current and the total current through every surface bounded by the loop is the same i — flat, pot or tiffin. The contradiction disappears. In the gap, id plays the role of the missing wire. Maxwell ne is term ko displacement current id = ε₀ dΦE/dt kaha. Ise conduction current mein jodiye to loop se ghire har surface se total current wahi i aati hai — flat, pot ya tiffin. Contradiction khatam. Gap mein id us missing wire ka kaam karti hai.Between the plates there is no wire, but the changing electric field acts like a current. Maxwell named it displacement current.
Charge the capacitor and watch i in the wire and ε₀ dΦE/dt in the gap stay exactly equal. Move the Ampère loop around the wire or between the plates — B comes out the same. Capacitor charge kijiye aur dekhiye ki wire mein i aur gap mein ε₀ dΦE/dt hamesha barabar rehte hain. Ampère loop ko wire ke around ya plates ke beech le jaiye — B same aata hai.
So the total current is the sum of the conduction current ic (moving charges) and the displacement current id (changing electric field):अतः कुल धारा चालन धारा ic (गतिमान आवेश) और विस्थापन धारा id (बदलता विद्युत क्षेत्र) का योग है:Isliye total current conduction current ic (moving charges) aur displacement current id (badalta electric field) ka sum hai:
- Outside the plates (in the wire): only conduction current, ic = i and id = 0. Plates ke bahar (wire mein): sirf conduction current, ic = i aur id = 0.
- Inside the capacitor (in the gap): no conduction current, ic = 0, and only displacement current, id = i. Capacitor ke andar (gap mein): conduction current nahi, ic = 0, sirf displacement current, id = i.
The corrected law, the Ampère–Maxwell law, has the same form as Ampère’s law but uses the total current through the surface:सुधरा हुआ नियम, ऐम्पियर-मैक्सवेल नियम, ऐम्पियर नियम जैसा ही है पर इसमें पृष्ठ से गुज़रती कुल धारा ली जाती है:Sudhara hua law, Ampère–Maxwell law, Ampère law jaisa hi hai par ismein surface se guzarti total current li jaati hai:
The displacement current has the same physical effect as conduction current: it produces a magnetic field. Between the plates the field E points from the + plate to the − plate and grows, and the magnetic field B circles around it, parallel to the plates (see B) — so here B ⊥ E. Experiment confirms it: the B measured at M between the plates (M) is the same as just outside at P.विस्थापन धारा का भौतिक प्रभाव चालन धारा जैसा ही है: यह चुंबकीय क्षेत्र बनाती है। Displacement current ka physical effect conduction current jaisa hi hai: ye magnetic field banati hai. Plates ke beech E, + se − plate ki or hai aur badh raha hai, aur magnetic field B uske chaaron or circles mein hai, plates ke parallel (B dekhiye) — isliye yahaan B ⊥ E. Experiment isko confirm karta hai: plates ke beech M par (M) measured B, theek bahar P par B jitna hi hai.
Conduction and displacement currents can exist in different regions (charging capacitor), or together in the same region (no medium is a perfect conductor or a perfect insulator). For a steady field in a wire, id = 0 because E does not change. Most interesting of all: there can be large regions of empty space with no conduction current, only displacement current — and a magnetic field still appears there. That is exactly what happens in an EM wave. Conduction aur displacement currents alag-alag regions mein (charging capacitor) ya ek hi region mein saath-saath ho sakti hain (koi medium perfect conductor ya perfect insulator nahi hota). Wire mein steady field ke liye id = 0, kyonki E nahi badalta. Sabse interesting: khaali space ke bade regions ho sakte hain jahan conduction current nahi, sirf displacement current hai — phir bhi wahan magnetic field banta hai. EM wave mein theek yahi hota hai.
The beautiful symmetry: Faraday — a changing B produces E (emf = −dΦB/dt). Ampère–Maxwell — a changing E produces B. Time-varying electric and magnetic fields give rise to each other! (Not perfectly symmetric: no magnetic monopoles — magnetic “charges” — are known.) Sundar symmetry: Faraday — badalta B, E banata hai (emf = −dΦB/dt). Ampère–Maxwell — badalta E, B banata hai. Time ke saath badalte electric aur magnetic fields ek-doosre ko janm dete hain! (Perfect symmetry nahi: koi magnetic monopole — magnetic “charge” — known nahi hai.)
“Displacement current” is not a flow of charges across the gap. No electron crosses the plates’ gap. It is the name for ε₀ dΦE/dt, which acts as a source of B just like a real current.“विस्थापन धारा” रिक्त स्थान के पार आवेशों का बहाव नहीं है। “Displacement current” gap ke paar charges ka flow nahi hai. Koi electron plates ka gap cross nahi karta. Ye ε₀ dΦE/dt ka naam hai, jo asli current ki tarah B ka source hai.
Inside the plates (radius R), a loop of radius r < R encloses only the fraction r²/R² of the displacement current, so B = μ₀ i r/(2πR²) — it grows linearly from zero at the axis. For r ≥ R the loop encloses all of id and B = μ₀ i/(2πr), exactly as around the wire. (NCERT Exercise 8.2 uses this.) Plates (radius R) ke andar, radius r < R ka loop displacement current ka sirf r²/R² hissa gherta hai, isliye B = μ₀ i r/(2πR²) — axis par zero se linearly badhta hai. r ≥ R ke liye loop poori id gherta hai aur B = μ₀ i/(2πr), theek wire ke around jaisa. (NCERT Exercise 8.2 mein yahi use hota hai.)

Electromagnetic waves ke sources
Which charges produce EM waves? Not a stationary charge — it makes only an electrostatic field. Not a charge in uniform motion (a steady current) — its magnetic field does not change with time. An important result of Maxwell’s theory: accelerated charges radiate electromagnetic waves (see the three cases). Kaun-se charges EM waves banate hain? Stationary charge nahi — wo sirf electrostatic field banata hai. Uniform motion waala charge (steady current) bhi nahi — uska magnetic field time ke saath nahi badalta. Maxwell theory ka important result: accelerated charges electromagnetic waves radiate karte hain (teeno cases dekhiye).Only an accelerating charge sends out EM waves. A charge at rest or moving steadily does not.
Rough picture: a charge oscillating with some frequency (an oscillating charge is accelerating) makes an oscillating electric field nearby. This changing E makes an oscillating magnetic field (Ampère–Maxwell), which in turn makes an oscillating electric field (Faraday), and so on (the cycle). The fields regenerate each other as the wave travels. The frequency of the wave equals the frequency of oscillation of the charge, and the energy carried by the wave comes from the source. Rough picture: kisi frequency se oscillate karta charge (oscillating charge accelerated hota hai) paas mein oscillating electric field banata hai. Ye badalta E oscillating magnetic field banata hai (Ampère–Maxwell), jo phir oscillating electric field banata hai (Faraday), aur yahi chalta rehta hai (cycle). Wave aage badhte hue fields ek-doosre ko regenerate karte hain.
Why not just test it with visible light? Yellow light has a frequency of about 6 × 10¹⁴ Hz, while even modern electronic circuits reach hardly about 10¹¹ Hz. So the first test had to use low-frequency (radio) waves — Hertz’s experiment (1887). Seven years later Jagadish Chandra Bose, working in Calcutta (now Kolkata), produced and observed much shorter waves (25 mm to 5 mm). Marconi in Italy sent EM waves over many kilometres — the beginning of communication by EM waves.
Every radio/TV transmitting tower is an “accelerated charge” machine: electrons are driven back and forth in the antenna at the station’s frequency, and the antenna radiates waves of exactly that frequency. NCERT notes that an antenna radiates most efficiently at wavelengths about its own size. Har radio/TV transmitting tower ek “accelerated charge” machine hai: antenna mein electrons station ki frequency par aage-peeche chalaaye jaate hain, aur antenna theek usi frequency ki waves chhodta hai. NCERT ke anusaar antenna apne size jitni wavelength ki waves sabse efficiently radiate karta hai.
Electromagnetic waves ki nature
From Maxwell’s equations: in an EM wave the electric and magnetic fields are perpendicular to each other and to the direction of propagation. You already saw a hint between the capacitor plates: E is perpendicular to the plates and B circles parallel to them, so B ⊥ E.मैक्सवेल समीकरणों से: EM तरंग में विद्युत और चुंबकीय क्षेत्र एक-दूसरे के और संचरण की दिशा के लंबवत होते हैं। Maxwell’s equations se: EM wave mein electric aur magnetic fields ek-doosre ke aur propagation direction ke perpendicular hote hain. Capacitor plates ke beech aapne hint dekha tha: E plates ke perpendicular hai aur B unke parallel circles mein, isliye B ⊥ E.
A plane wave travelling along z (direction of travel), with E along x (E) and B along y (B):z (B):z ki or chalti plane wave (direction of travel), E x ki or (E) aur B y ki or (B):
Here k = 2π/λ is the magnitude of the wave (propagation) vector k, whose direction is the direction of propagation, and ω is the angular frequency. The wave speed is ω/k. मैक्सवेल समीकरणों से:Yahaan k = 2π/λ wave (propagation) vector k ka magnitude hai, jiski direction propagation ki direction hai, aur ω angular frequency hai. Wave ki speed ω/k hai. Maxwell’s equations se:
Change the frequency and E₀. Watch E (red, up–down) and B (blue, sideways) rise and fall together, at right angles. Live: λ = c/ν, B₀ = E₀/c, k, ω. लाइव: λ = c/ν, B₀ = E₀/c, k, ω।Frequency aur E₀ badaliye. Dekhiye E (laal, upar-neeche) aur B (neela, side mein) saath-saath badhte-ghatte hain, right angle par. Live: λ = c/ν, B₀ = E₀/c, k, ω.
Put in the numbers: μ₀ = 4π × 10⁻⁷ T m A⁻¹ and ε₀ = 8.854 × 10⁻¹² C² N⁻¹ m⁻² give 1/√(μ₀ε₀) ≈ 3.00 × 10⁸ m/s — the speed of light. That is how Maxwell concluded that light is an EM wave. Because c is so large, B₀ = E₀/c is very small in SI units: a wave with E₀ = 60 V/m has B₀ only 2 × 10⁻⁷ T.मान रखें: μ₀ = 4π × 10⁻⁷ T m A⁻¹ और ε₀ = 8.854 × 10⁻¹² C² N⁻¹ m⁻² से 1/√(μ₀ε₀) ≈ 3.00 × 10⁸ m/s — प्रकाश की चाल। Values rakhiye: μ₀ = 4π × 10⁻⁷ T m A⁻¹ aur ε₀ = 8.854 × 10⁻¹² C² N⁻¹ m⁻² se 1/√(μ₀ε₀) ≈ 3.00 × 10⁸ m/s — light ki speed. Isi se Maxwell ne conclude kiya ki light EM wave hai. c bahut bada hai, isliye SI mein B₀ = E₀/c bahut chhota hota hai: E₀ = 60 V/m waali wave ka B₀ sirf 2 × 10⁻⁷ T.
Rotate the real wave: E oscillates in one plane, B in the perpendicular plane, and the wave runs along the third axis. Tap any part to name it. Asli wave ghumaakar dekhiye: E ek plane mein oscillate karta hai, B uske perpendicular plane mein, aur wave teesre axis par chalti hai. Kisi bhi part par tap kijiye, uska naam aayega.
Some special features of EM waves:EM EM waves ki kuch special baatein:
- They are self-sustaining oscillations of E and B in vacuum. Unlike sound or water waves, no material medium is needed. Ye vacuum mein E aur B ke self-sustaining oscillations hain. Sound ya water waves ke opposite, koi material medium nahi chahiye.
- In a material medium of permittivity ε and permeability μ, the speed is v = 1/√(με) — it depends on the electric and magnetic properties of the medium. (Refractive index = ratio of speeds, next chapter.) Permittivity ε aur permeability μ waale medium mein speed v = 1/√(με) — ye medium ke electric aur magnetic properties par depend karti hai. Electromagnetic Spectrum
When Maxwell predicted EM waves, the only familiar ones were visible light waves; UV and infrared were barely established. By the end of the nineteenth century X-rays and gamma rays were also discovered. Today we know EM waves include radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays and gamma rays. Their classification by frequency (or wavelength) is the electromagnetic spectrum. There is no sharp division between one kind and the next; the names are based roughly on how the waves are produced and/or detected. Ek type aur agle ke beech koi sharp division nahi; naam roughly is par based hain ki waves kaise produce aur/ya detect hoti hain. All of these are the same kind of wave (E and B fields) travelling at c. Only the wavelength is different.

8.4.1Radio wavesरेडियो तरंगेंRadio waves
Produced by the accelerated motion of charges in conducting wires. Used in radio and television communication. Frequency range roughly 500 kHz to about 1000 MHz. The AM (amplitude modulated) band is 530 kHz to 1710 kHz; higher frequencies up to 54 MHz are used for short-wave bands. TV waves range from 54 MHz to 890 MHz. The FM (frequency modulated) radio band is 88 MHz to 108 MHz. Cellular phones use radio waves in the ultrahigh frequency (UHF) band (see the bands). Conducting wires mein charges ke accelerated motion se banti hain. Cellular phones ultrahigh frequency (UHF) band ki radio waves use karte hain (bands dekhiye).
Microwaves
Microwaves are short-wavelength radio waves, with frequencies in the gigahertz (GHz) range, produced by special vacuum tubes — klystrons, magnetrons — and Gunn diodes. Because of their short wavelengths they suit radar systems used in aircraft navigation; radar is also the basis of speed guns that time fast balls, tennis serves and automobiles. In a microwave oven the frequency is chosen so that energy from the waves is transferred efficiently to the kinetic energy of water molecules, raising the temperature of any food that contains water. Microwaves short wavelength waali radio waves hain, jinki frequency gigahertz (GHz) range mein hoti hai; inhe special vacuum tubes — klystrons, magnetrons — aur Gunn diodes banate hain. Chhoti wavelength ke kaaran ye aircraft navigation ke radar ke liye suitable hain; tez ball, tennis serve aur gaadiyon ki speed naapne waali speed gun bhi radar par based hai. Microwave oven mein frequency aisi chuni jaati hai ki waves ki energy water molecules ki kinetic energy mein efficiently jaaye, jisse paani waale khaane ka temperature badhta hai.
NCERT phrases it as matching the “resonant frequency of water molecules”. Strictly, ovens use about 2.45 GHz, which is not a sharp resonance of a single water molecule: the polar water molecules keep trying to turn with the rapidly reversing electric field, and this jostling heats the food. In the exam, the NCERT line is what is expected.NCERT
8.4.3Infrared wavesअवरक्त तरंगेंInfrared waves
Produced by hot bodies and molecules. This band lies next to the low-frequency (long-wavelength) end of the visible spectrum. Infrared waves are called heat waves: water molecules in most materials readily absorb infrared (CO₂, NH₃ and many other molecules do too), their thermal motion increases, and they heat up and heat their surroundings. Uses: infrared lamps in physical therapy; infrared detectors in Earth satellites (military use and observing the growth of crops); LEDs emitting infrared in remote controls of TV sets and other household electronics. Hot bodies aur molecules se produce. Ye band visible spectrum ke low frequency (long wavelength) end ke paas hai. Infrared waves ko heat waves kehte hain: zyaadatar materials ke water molecules infrared aasaani se absorb karte hain (CO₂, NH₃ aadi bhi), unki thermal motion badhti hai, wo garam hokar surroundings ko garam karte hain. Uses: physical therapy mein infrared lamps; Earth satellites mein infrared detectors (military use, crops ki growth dekhna); TV aadi ke remote mein infrared chhodne waale LED.
Infrared also keeps the Earth warm through the greenhouse effect: incoming visible light passes fairly easily through the atmosphere, is absorbed by the Earth’s surface and re-radiated as infrared (longer wavelength), which is trapped by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and water vapour (see). Infrared greenhouse effect se Earth ko garam bhi rakhti hai: aane waali visible light atmosphere se aasaani se guzarkar Earth ki surface dwara absorb hoti hai aur infrared (longer wavelength) ke roop mein re-radiate hoti hai, jise carbon dioxide aur water vapour jaisi greenhouse gases trap kar leti hain (dekhiye).
8.4.4Visible raysदृश्य किरणेंVisible rays
The most familiar part: the part of the spectrum detected by the human eye, from about 4 × 10¹⁴ Hz to 7 × 10¹⁴ Hz, i.e. wavelengths of about 700 nm to 400 nm (red to violet). Visible light emitted or reflected by objects gives us information about the world. Different animals see different ranges: snakes can detect infrared, and the “visible” range of many insects extends well into the ultraviolet. Sabse familiar part: spectrum ka wo part jise human eye dekh paati hai, lagbhag 4 × 10¹⁴ Hz se 7 × 10¹⁴ Hz, yaani wavelength lagbhag 700 nm se 400 nm (red se violet). Objects se emit ya reflect hui visible light hume duniya ki jaankari deti hai. Alag-alag jaanwar alag range dekhte hain: saanp infrared detect kar sakte hain, aur kai insects ki “visible” range ultraviolet tak phaili hai.
Higher frequency ⇔ shorter wavelength. Violet light (≈ 400 nm) has a higher frequency than red (≈ 700 nm). Students often mix this up in the spectrum order. Zyaada frequency ⇔ kam wavelength. Spectrum order mein students aksar ye ulta kar dete hain.
8.4.5Ultraviolet raysपराबैंगनी किरणेंUltraviolet rays
Wavelengths from about 4 × 10⁻⁷ m (400 nm) down to 6 × 10⁻¹⁰ m (0.6 nm). Produced by special lamps and very hot bodies; the Sun is an important source. Fortunately most of it is absorbed by the ozone layer at an altitude of about 40–50 km (see). Large doses of UV harm humans; exposure makes the skin produce more melanin (tanning). Ordinary glass absorbs UV, so you cannot get tanned or sunburnt through glass windows. Welders wear special glass goggles or face masks to protect their eyes from the UV of welding arcs. Wavelength lagbhag 4 × 10⁻⁷ m (400 nm) se 6 × 10⁻¹⁰ m (0.6 nm) tak. Special lamps aur bahut hot bodies banate hain; Sun important source hai. Khushkismati se iska zyaadatar hissa lagbhag 40–50 km height par ozone layer absorb kar leti hai (dekhiye). Zyaada UV insaan ke liye harmful; isse skin zyaada melanin banati hai (tanning). Ordinary glass UV absorb karta hai, isliye glass window se tanning ya sunburn nahi hota. Welders welding arc ki UV se aankhen bachaane ke liye special glass goggles ya face mask pehente hain.
Because of its short wavelength, UV can be focused into very narrow beams for high-precision uses such as LASIK eye surgery. UV lamps kill germs in water purifiers. Depletion of the protective ozone layer by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs, e.g. freon) is a matter of international concern. Chhoti wavelength ke kaaran UV ko bahut narrow beam mein focus karke LASIK eye surgery jaise precise kaamon mein use kiya jaata hai. Water purifiers mein UV lamps germs maarte hain. Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs, jaise freon) se protective ozone layer ka depletion international chinta ka vishay hai.
X-rays
Beyond UV lies the X-ray region, covering wavelengths from about 10⁻⁸ m (10 nm) down to 10⁻¹³ m (10⁻⁴ nm). A common way to make X-rays: bombard a metal target with high-energy electrons (see the tube). Uses: a diagnostic tool in medicine and a treatment for certain cancers. X-rays damage or destroy living tissue, so unnecessary or over-exposure must be avoided.UV UV ke aage X-ray region hai, wavelength lagbhag 10⁻⁸ m (10 nm) se 10⁻¹³ m (10⁻⁴ nm) tak. 8.4.7Gamma raysगामा किरणेंGamma rays

Points to ponder (NCERT): (1) All EM waves travel through vacuum at the same speed; they differ only in wavelength/frequency, so they interact with matter very differently. (2) The wavelength is often related to the size of the radiating system: γ-rays (10⁻¹⁴–10⁻¹⁵ m) come from nuclei; an antenna radiates best at about its own size — but visible light from atoms is much longer than atomic size. (3) Infrared vibrates whole atoms and molecules, raising internal energy and temperature — hence “heat waves”. (4) Our eyes are most sensitive near the centre of the Sun’s wavelength distribution. Points to ponder (NCERT): (1) Saari EM waves vacuum mein ek hi speed se chalti hain; sirf wavelength/frequency alag hai, isliye matter ke saath inka interaction bahut alag hai. (2) Wavelength aksar radiating system ke size se judi hai: γ-rays (10⁻¹⁴–10⁻¹⁵ m) nucleus se aati hain; antenna apne size jitni wavelength best radiate karta hai — par atoms ki visible light atomic size se bahut lambi hai. (3) Infrared poore atoms/molecules ko vibrate karti hai, internal energy aur temperature badhaati hai — isliye “heat waves”. (4) Hamari aankhen Sun ke wavelength distribution ke centre ke paas sabse sensitive hain.
