🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeA matrix is simply a neat box of numbers arranged in rows and columns — like a marks table or a shop's price list. In this chapter you learn how to write such boxes, name their sizes, and add, multiply and "flip" them. Matrix bas numbers ka ek saaf-suthra box hai jismein numbers rows aur columns mein rakhe hote hain — jaise marks ki table ya dukaan ki price list. Is chapter mein aap seekhenge ki aise box kaise likhte hain, unka size kaise batate hain, aur unhe kaise jodte, multiply karte aur "palatte" hain.

Matrices are one of the most powerful tools in mathematics. The idea grew out of the search for compact and simple methods of solving systems of linear equations. Today matrix notation is used in spreadsheet programs (budgeting, sales projection, cost estimation), to describe magnification, rotation and reflection, in cryptography, and in genetics, economics, sociology, psychology and industrial management. Matrices maths ke sabse powerful tools mein se ek hain. If Fatima doubles the production at A in all categories, every entry of A is doubled: 2A = \begin{bmatrix} 160 & 120 \\ 150 & 130 \\ 180 & 170 \end{bmatrix}. Agar Fatima A par saari categories mein production double kar de, to A ki har entry double ho jaati hai: 2A = \begin{bmatrix} 160 & 120 \\ 150 & 130 \\ 180 & 170 \end{bmatrix}.

📘 Definition (NCERT)📘 परिभाषा (NCERT)📘 Definition (NCERT)Scalar multipleIf A = [a_{ij}]_{m \times n} and k is a scalar, then kA is obtained by multiplying each element of A by k: kA = k[a_{ij}]_{m \times n} = [k(a_{ij})]_{m \times n}.अदिश गुणजयदि A = [a_{ij}]_{m \times n} और k एक अदिश है, तो A के प्रत्येक अवयव को k से गुणा करके kA मिलता है: kA = k[a_{ij}]_{m \times n} = [k(a_{ij})]_{m \times n}।Scalar multipleAgar A = [a_{ij}]_{m \times n} aur k ek scalar hai, to A ke har element ko k se multiply karke kA milta hai: kA = k[a_{ij}]_{m \times n} = [k(a_{ij})]_{m \times n}.

For example, if A = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 1 & 1.5 \\ \sqrt5 & 7 & -3 \\ 2 & 0 & 5 \end{bmatrix} then 3A = \begin{bmatrix} 9 & 3 & 4.5 \\ 3\sqrt5 & 21 & -9 \\ 6 & 0 & 15 \end{bmatrix}. The negative of a matrix is -A = (-1)A, and the difference is A - B = A + (-1)B, defined for matrices of the same order: D = [d_{ij}] with d_{ij} = a_{ij} - b_{ij}.उदाहरण के लिए, यदि A = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 1 & 1.5 \\ \sqrt5 & 7 & -3 \\ 2 & 0 & 5 \end{bmatrix} तो 3A = \begin{bmatrix} 9 & 3 & 4.5 \\ 3\sqrt5 & 21 & -9 \\ 6 & 0 & 15 \end{bmatrix}। किसी आव्यूह का ऋण -A = (-1)A है, और अंतर A - B = A + (-1)B है, जो समान कोटि के आव्यूहों के लिए परिभाषित है: D = [d_{ij}], जहाँ d_{ij} = a_{ij} - b_{ij}।Jaise, agar A = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 1 & 1.5 \\ \sqrt5 & 7 & -3 \\ 2 & 0 & 5 \end{bmatrix} to 3A = \begin{bmatrix} 9 & 3 & 4.5 \\ 3\sqrt5 & 21 & -9 \\ 6 & 0 & 15 \end{bmatrix}. Matrix ka negative -A = (-1)A hai, aur difference A - B = A + (-1)B hai, jo same order ke matrices ke liye defined hai: D = [d_{ij}], jahan d_{ij} = a_{ij} - b_{ij}.

Let A = [a_{ij}] be an m \times n matrix and B = [b_{jk}] an n \times p matrix. Then AB is the m \times p matrix C = [c_{ik}], where c_{ik} = a_{i1}b_{1k} + a_{i2}b_{2k} + \dots + a_{in}b_{nk} = \sum_{j=1}^{n} a_{ij}b_{jk}. मान लीजिए A = [a_{ij}] एक m \times n आव्यूह और B = [b_{jk}] एक n \times p आव्यूह है। तब AB एक m \times p आव्यूह C = [c_{ik}] है, जहाँ c_{ik} = a_{i1}b_{1k} + a_{i2}b_{2k} + \dots + a_{in}b_{nk} = \sum_{j=1}^{n} a_{ij}b_{jk}।Matrices ka productDo matrices A aur B ka product defined hai agar A ke columns ki sankhya B ki rows ki sankhya ke barabar ho. Maan lijiye A = [a_{ij}] ek m \times n matrix aur B = [b_{jk}] ek n \times p matrix hai. Tab AB ek m \times p matrix C = [c_{ik}] hai, jahan c_{ik} = a_{i1}b_{1k} + a_{i2}b_{2k} + \dots + a_{in}b_{nk} = \sum_{j=1}^{n} a_{ij}b_{jk}.
(m \times \underbrace{n) \cdot (n}_{\text{must match}} \times p) \;\Rightarrow\; AB \text{ is } m \times p

For example, with C = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & -1 & 2 \\ 0 & 3 & 4 \end{bmatrix} (2 \times 3) and D = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 7 \\ -1 & 1 \\ 5 & -4 \end{bmatrix} (3 \times 2), CD is 2 \times 2. Its (2, 1) entry is row 2 of C times column 1 of D: 0(2) + 3(-1) + 4(5) = 17. Altogether CD = \begin{bmatrix} 13 & -2 \\ 17 & -13 \end{bmatrix}. Tap the picture and then play with the animator. पूरा CD = \begin{bmatrix} 13 & -2 \\ 17 & -13 \end{bmatrix}। Jaise C = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & -1 & 2 \\ 0 & 3 & 4 \end{bmatrix} (2 \times 3) aur D = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 7 \\ -1 & 1 \\ 5 & -4 \end{bmatrix} (3 \times 2) ke liye CD ka order 2 \times 2 hai. Iski (2, 1) entry = C ki row 2 × D ka column 1: 0(2) + 3(-1) + 4(5) = 17. Poora CD = \begin{bmatrix} 13 & -2 \\ 17 & -13 \end{bmatrix}.

Example 12Find AB, if A = \begin{bmatrix} 6 & 9 \\ 2 & 3 \end{bmatrix} and B = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 6 & 0 \\ 7 & 9 & 8 \end{bmatrix}.उदाहरण 12यदि A = \begin{bmatrix} 6 & 9 \\ 2 & 3 \end{bmatrix} और B = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 6 & 0 \\ 7 & 9 & 8 \end{bmatrix} हैं, तो AB ज्ञात कीजिए।Example 12Agar A = \begin{bmatrix} 6 & 9 \\ 2 & 3 \end{bmatrix} aur B = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 6 & 0 \\ 7 & 9 & 8 \end{bmatrix} hain, to AB nikaliye.
Solution — step by step (3)Hal — step by step (3)
  1. Columns of A (2) = rows of B (2).A A ke columns (2) = B ki rows (2).
    A: 2 \times 2,\ B: 2 \times 3 \Rightarrow AB \text{ is defined and is } 2 \times 3
  2. Row 1 of A with each of the 3 columns of B.A A ki row 1, B ke teeno columns ke saath.
    \text{Row 1: } 6(2)+9(7) = 75,\ \ 6(6)+9(9) = 117,\ \ 6(0)+9(8) = 72
  3. Row 2 of A with each column of B.A A ki row 2, B ke har column ke saath.
    \text{Row 2: } 2(2)+3(7) = 25,\ \ 2(6)+3(9) = 39,\ \ 2(0)+3(8) = 24

✔ AB = \begin{bmatrix} 75 & 117 & 72 \\ 25 & 39 & 24 \end{bmatrix}AB = \begin{bmatrix} 75 & 117 & 72 \\ 25 & 39 & 24 \end{bmatrix}AB = \begin{bmatrix} 75 & 117 & 72 \\ 25 & 39 & 24 \end{bmatrix}

RemarkIf AB is defined, BA need not be defined. In Example 12, A is 2 \times 2 and B is 2 \times 3, so AB is defined but BA is not. If A is m \times n and B is k \times l, then both AB and BA are defined if and only if n = k and l = m; in particular, if A and B are both square of the same order, both are defined. RemarkAgar AB defined hai, to zaroori nahi ki BA bhi defined ho. Example 12 mein A 2 \times 2 aur B 2 \times 3 hai, isliye AB defined hai par BA nahi. Agar A m \times n aur B k \times l hai, to AB aur BA dono defined hain agar aur sirf agar n = k aur l = m; khaas taur par same order ke square matrices ke liye dono defined hain.

Non-commutativity. Even when both AB and BA are defined, they need not be equal. Non-commutativity. Jab AB aur BA dono defined hon, tab bhi zaroori nahi ki wo barabar hon.

🏆 Topper box🏆 टॉपर बॉक्स🏆 Topper boxWhy is AB \ne BA in Example 14? Think of each 2 \times 2 matrix as a move of the plane: A reflects in the x-axis, B reflects in the line y = x. AB means "do B first, then A" — the result is a quarter turn clockwise; BA ("do A first, then B") is a quarter turn anticlockwise. Order of moves matters, so order of multiplication matters. See it in the sim below. (This picture is extra insight; the book itself only computes the products.) Example 14 mein AB \ne BA kyun? Har 2 \times 2 matrix ko plane ki ek chaal samajhiye: A x-axis mein reflection karta hai, B line y = x mein. AB ka matlab "pehle B, phir A" — result clockwise quarter turn hai; BA ("pehle A, phir B") anticlockwise quarter turn hai. Chaalon ka order matter karta hai, isliye multiplication ka order bhi. NoteThis does not mean AB \ne BA for every pair. For A = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 2 \end{bmatrix},\ B = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 0 \\ 0 & 4 \end{bmatrix} we get AB = BA = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 0 \\ 0 & 8 \end{bmatrix}. 🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeTranspose = flip the matrix over its diagonal: the first row becomes the first column, the second row becomes the second column, and so on. A 3 \times 2 matrix becomes 2 \times 3. Transpose = matrix ko uske diagonal par palatna: pehli row pehla column ban jaati hai, doosri row doosra column, aur aise hi. 3 \times 2 matrix 2 \times 3 ban jaata hai.

📘 Definition (NCERT)📘 परिभाषा (NCERT)📘 Definition (NCERT)Definition 4 — Symmetric matrixA square matrix A = [a_{ij}] is said to be symmetric if A' = A, that is, [a_{ij}] = [a_{ji}] for all possible values of i and j.परिभाषा 4 — सममित आव्यूहवर्ग आव्यूह A = [a_{ij}] सममित कहलाता है यदि A' = A, अर्थात् i और j के सभी संभव मानों के लिए [a_{ij}] = [a_{ji}]।Definition 4 — Symmetric matrixSquare matrix A = [a_{ij}] symmetric kehlata hai agar A' = A, yaani i aur j ki saari possible values ke liye [a_{ij}] = [a_{ji}].

🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeFor numbers, 5 \times \tfrac15 = 1: \tfrac15 "undoes" 5. For square matrices the role of 1 is played by I. If some B undoes A from both sides (AB = BA = I), we call B the inverse of A.संख्याओं में 5 \times \tfrac15 = 1: \tfrac15, 5 को "उलट" देता है। यदि कोई B, A को दोनों ओर से उलट दे (AB = BA = I), तो B को A का व्युत्क्रम कहते हैं।Numbers mein 5 \times \tfrac15 = 1: \tfrac15, 5 ko "ulta" kar deta hai. Square matrices mein 1 ka role I nibhata hai. Agar koi B, A ko dono taraf se ulta kar de (AB = BA = I), to B ko A ka inverse kehte hain.
📘 Definition (NCERT)📘 परिभाषा (NCERT)📘 Definition (NCERT)Definition 6 — Invertible matrixIf A is a square matrix of order m, and if there exists another square matrix B of the same order m, such that AB = BA = I, then B is called the inverse matrix of A and it is denoted by A^{-1}. In that case A is said to be invertible. Definition 6 — Invertible matrixAgar A order m ka square matrix hai, aur usi order m ka ek aur square matrix B aisa hai ki AB = BA = I, to B ko A ka inverse matrix kehte hain aur ise A^{-1} se dikhate hain. Is case mein A invertible kehlata hai.

For example, let A = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 3 \\ 1 & 2 \end{bmatrix} and B = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & -3 \\ -1 & 2 \end{bmatrix}. Then AB = \begin{bmatrix} 4-3 & -6+6 \\ 2-2 & -3+4 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \end{bmatrix} = I, and also BA = I. So B is the inverse of A — and A is the inverse of B.उदाहरण के लिए, मान लीजिए A = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 3 \\ 1 & 2 \end{bmatrix} और B = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & -3 \\ -1 & 2 \end{bmatrix}। तब AB = \begin{bmatrix} 4-3 & -6+6 \\ 2-2 & -3+4 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \end{bmatrix} = I, और BA = I भी। Jaise, maan lijiye A = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 3 \\ 1 & 2 \end{bmatrix} aur B = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & -3 \\ -1 & 2 \end{bmatrix}. Tab AB = \begin{bmatrix} 4-3 & -6+6 \\ 2-2 & -3+4 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ 0 & 1 \end{bmatrix} = I, aur BA = I bhi. Isliye B, A ka inverse hai — aur A, B ka inverse hai.

Note(1) A rectangular matrix does not possess an inverse matrix, since for products BA and AB to be defined and to be equal, it is necessary that A and B are square matrices of the same order. (2) If B is the inverse of A, then A is also the inverse of B.नोट(1) आयताकार आव्यूह का व्युत्क्रम आव्यूह नहीं होता, क्योंकि गुणनफल BA और AB के परिभाषित और बराबर होने के लिए आवश्यक है कि A और B समान कोटि के वर्ग आव्यूह हों। Note(1) Rectangular matrix ka inverse matrix nahi hota, kyunki products BA aur AB ke defined aur barabar hone ke liye zaroori hai ki A aur B same order ke square matrices hon. Find a matrix D such that CD - AB = O.उदाहरण 25मान लीजिए A = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ 3 & 4 \end{bmatrix},\ B = \begin{bmatrix} 5 & 2 \\ 7 & 4 \end{bmatrix},\ C = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 5 \\ 3 & 8 \end{bmatrix} हैं। Example 25Maan lijiye A = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & -1 \\ 3 & 4 \end{bmatrix},\ B = \begin{bmatrix} 5 & 2 \\ 7 & 4 \end{bmatrix},\ C = \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 5 \\ 3 & 8 \end{bmatrix} hain. Ek matrix D nikaliye jisse CD - AB = O.
Solution — step by step (4)Hal — step by step (4)
  1. A, B, C are 2 \times 2, so D must be 2 \times 2 for CD - AB to be defined.A, B, C A, B, C 2 \times 2 hain, isliye CD - AB defined hone ke liye D bhi 2 \times 2 hona chahiye.
    D = \begin{bmatrix} a & b \\ c & d \end{bmatrix}
  2. Compute both products. Dono products nikaliye.
    CD = \begin{bmatrix} 2a+5c & 2b+5d \\ 3a+8c & 3b+8d \end{bmatrix},\quad AB = \begin{bmatrix} 10-7 & 4-4 \\ 15+28 & 6+16 \end{bmatrix} = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & 0 \\ 43 & 22 \end{bmatrix}
CD - AB = O ka matlab CD = AB: corresponding elements barabar rakhiye.
    2a + 5c = 3,\ \ 3a + 8c = 43;\qquad 2b + 5d = 0,\ \ 3b + 8d = 22
  4. Solve each pair: e.g. 3(2a + 5c) - 2(3a + 8c) = 9 - 86 \Rightarrow -c = -77; and 3(2b + 5d) - 2(3b + 8d) = 0 - 44 \Rightarrow -d = -44. Har pair solve kijiye: jaise 3(2a + 5c) - 2(3a + 8c) = 9 - 86 \Rightarrow -c = -77; aur 3(2b + 5d) - 2(3b + 8d) = 0 - 44 \Rightarrow -d = -44.
    c = 77,\ a = -191;\qquad d = 44,\ b = -110

✔ D = \begin{bmatrix} -191 & -110 \\ 77 & 44 \end{bmatrix}D = \begin{bmatrix} -191 & -110 \\ 77 & 44 \end{bmatrix}D = \begin{bmatrix} -191 & -110 \\ 77 & 44 \end{bmatrix}
