Parts and what they mean
- Row 2 (i = 2) (पंक्ति 2 (i = 2)) — A row is a horizontal line of elements: a_{21}, a_{22}, a_{23}, a_{24}. The FIRST index of a_{ij} tells the row.
- Column 3 (j = 3) (स्तंभ 3 (j = 3)) — A column is a vertical line of elements: a_{13}, a_{23}, a_{33}. The SECOND index of a_{ij} tells the column.
- Element a_{23} (अवयव a_{23}) — The (2, 3)th element: where row 2 and column 3 cross. Row first, column second.
- An element a_{ij} (एक अवयव a_{ij}) — Each entry is named by its row number i and column number j.
- Brackets [ ] (कोष्ठक [ ]) — A matrix is written inside square (or round) brackets and named by a capital letter.
- n = 4 columns (n = 4 स्तंभ) — Count the vertical lines: 4 columns. This is the second number of the order.
- m = 3 rows (m = 3 पंक्तियाँ) — Count the horizontal lines: 3 rows. This is the first number of the order.
- Order 3 \times 4 (कोटि 3 \times 4) — Order = rows × columns = m \times n. It has mn = 12 elements.
