Introduction

Motion is change in position with time. Here we study rectilinear motion (motion along a straight line) and treat bodies as point objects — fine when the body’s size is much smaller than the distance it moves. Describing motion without asking its cause is kinematics; the causes come in Chapter 4. Time ke saath position badalna motion hai. Yahaan rectilinear motion (seedhi line mein motion) padhte hain aur bodies ko point objects maante hain — tab theek jab body ka size uski chali doori se bahut chhota ho. Cause pooche bina motion describe karna kinematics hai; causes Chapter 4 mein.

Choose an origin and a positive direction on the line. Displacement Δx = x₂ − x₁ can be +, − or zero; path length is the total distance actually covered and is never negative. Average velocity = Δx/Δt; average speed = total path length / total time. Average speed ≥ |average velocity|. Line par ek origin aur positive direction chuniye. Instantaneous velocity aur speed

Average velocity does not tell how fast the body moves at a particular instant. Instantaneous velocity is the limit of the average velocity as Δt → 0, i.e. the derivative of x with respect to t. On an x–t graph it is the slope of the tangent at that instant (Fig 2.1). Average velocity ye nahi batata ki kisi khaas instant par body kitni tez hai. Instantaneous velocity Δt → 0 par average velocity ki limit hai, yaani x ka t ke respect mein derivative. x–t graph par ye us instant tangent ki slope hai (Fig 2.1).

Instantaneous speed is the magnitude of the instantaneous velocity (for a tiny interval the path length equals |displacement|). Velocity can be negative; speed never is. Instantaneous speed instantaneous velocity ka magnitude hai (bahut chhote interval mein path length = |displacement|). Velocity negative ho sakti hai; speed kabhi nahi.

Acceleration

Average acceleration = change in velocity / time interval; instantaneous acceleration a = dv/dt = d²x/dt², the slope of the v–t graph. SI unit m s⁻². Acceleration can be positive, negative or zero. On an x–t graph, a > 0 makes the curve bend up, a < 0 bends it down, a = 0 gives a straight line (Fig 2.2). x–t ग्राफ पर a > 0 से वक्र ऊपर मुड़ता है, a < 0 से नीचे, a = 0 से सीधी रेखा (चित्र 2.2)।Average acceleration = velocity change / time interval; instantaneous acceleration a = dv/dt = d²x/dt², v–t graph ki slope. For constant acceleration the v–t graph is a straight line (Fig 2.3). The area under the v–t curve between t₁ and t₂ equals the displacement in that interval (Fig 2.4) — area has units of (m s⁻¹) × s = m.

Signs: a doubt every student hasIf speed increases, a is along v; if speed decreases, a is opposite to v. The sign of a alone does not say speeding up or slowing down — a falling stone has a = −g (upward +) and still speeds up. Zero velocity does not mean zero acceleration (top of a throw). Signs: har student ka doubtSpeed badhe to a, v ki direction mein; ghate to a, v ke ulta. Uniformly accelerated motion ke kinematic equations

For constant a, from a = (v − v₀)/t we get v = v₀ + at. The displacement is the area under the v–t line (Fig 2.5): rectangle v₀t + triangle ½(v − v₀)t = v₀t + ½at². Eliminating t gives v² = v₀² + 2ax. These are the equations of motion (x = displacement from the starting point; replace x by x − x₀ if the start is at x₀).नियत a के लिए a = (v − v₀)/t से v = v₀ + at। Constant a ke liye a = (v − v₀)/t se v = v₀ + at. Solved (NCERT Example 2.2 — by calculus)a = dv/dt ⇒ ∫dv = ∫a dt ⇒ v − v₀ = at. Then v = dx/dt ⇒ ∫dx = ∫(v₀ + at)dt ⇒ x − x₀ = v₀t + ½at². The calculus method works even when a is not constant.हल (NCERT उदाहरण 2.2 — कलन से)a = dv/dt ⇒ ∫dv = ∫a dt ⇒ v − v₀ = at। फिर v = dx/dt ⇒ ∫dx = ∫(v₀ + at)dt ⇒ x − x₀ = v₀t + ½at²। साथ ही a = dv/dt = v dv/dx ⇒ ∫v dv = ∫a dx ⇒ (v² − v₀²)/2 = a(x − x₀)। Solved (NCERT Example 2.2 — calculus se)a = dv/dt ⇒ ∫dv = ∫a dt ⇒ v − v₀ = at.
