Introduction
To measure a physical quantity is to compare it with a fixed, internationally accepted reference standard called a unit. A measurement is always written as number × unit, e.g. 5.2 m. Units of the fundamental (base) quantities are base units; units of all other quantities are combinations of them and are called derived units. A complete set of base and derived units is a system of units. Kisi physical quantity ko measure karna matlab use ek fixed, international reference standard se compare karna, jise unit kehte hain. Measurement hamesha number × unit likha jaata hai, jaise 5.2 m. Base quantities ki units base units hain; baaki sab quantities ki units inhi ka combination hain — derived units. Base + derived units ka poora set system of units hai.
International system of units (SI)
Earlier, three systems were common: CGS (centimetre, gram, second), FPS (foot, pound, second) and MKS (metre, kilogram, second). Today the internationally accepted system is the SI (Système International d’Unités), developed by BIPM and last revised in November 2018. It is a decimal system, so conversions are easy. Pehle teen systems chalte the: CGS (centimetre, gram, second), FPS (foot, pound, second) aur MKS (metre, kilogram, second). Aaj international system SI (Système International d’Unités) hai — BIPM ne banaya, November 2018 mein revise hua. Ye decimal system hai, isliye conversion aasaan.

These are the seven SI base units (Table 1.1). Since 2018 each is defined by fixing the value of a constant of nature — the metre through the speed of light c, the kilogram through Planck’s constant h, the second through the caesium-133 frequency, and so on. NCERT notes these exact values need not be memorised. Ye saat SI base units hain (Table 1.1). 2018 se har ek ko kisi natural constant ki value fix karke define kiya jaata hai — metre speed of light c se, kilogram Planck constant h se, second caesium-133 frequency se. NCERT kehta hai ye exact values ratne ki zaroorat nahi.
Two more units are defined for angles (Fig 1.1): plane angle dθ = ds/r, unit radian (rad), and solid angle dΩ = dA/r², unit steradian (sr). Both are ratios of like quantities, so they are dimensionless. Angles ke liye do aur units hain (Fig 1.1): plane angle dθ = ds/r, unit radian (rad), aur solid angle dΩ = dA/r², unit steradian (sr). 1.3Significant figuresसार्थक अंकSignificant figures
Every measurement has some error. So we report all digits that are reliably known plus the first uncertain digit — these are the significant figures. A pendulum period of 1.62 s has 3 significant figures (1 and 6 certain, 2 uncertain). They show the precision of the measurement, which depends on the least count of the instrument. Changing units does not change the number of significant figures: 2.308 cm = 0.02308 m = 23.08 mm all have four. Har measurement mein kuch error hota hai. Isliye hum reliable digits + pehla uncertain digit likhte hain — yahi significant figures hain. Pendulum period 1.62 s mein 3 significant figures (1 aur 6 pakke, 2 uncertain). Ye measurement ki precision dikhate hain jo instrument ke least count par depend karti hai. Unit badalne se significant figures nahi badalte: 2.308 cm = 0.02308 m = 23.08 mm — sab mein chaar.
To avoid confusion about trailing zeros, write every measurement in scientific notation a × 10ᵇ (1 ≤ a < 10). All digits of a are significant; the power of 10 is irrelevant: 4.700 m = 4.700 × 10² cm = 4.700 × 10⁻³ km — four in each. Rounding a to 1 (a ≤ 5) or 10 (5 < a ≤ 10) gives the order of magnitude: Earth’s diameter 1.28 × 10⁷ m is of order 10⁷ m; a hydrogen atom (1.06 × 10⁻¹⁰ m) is of order 10⁻¹⁰ m — 17 orders smaller. a को 1 (a ≤ 5) या 10 (5 < a ≤ 10) में पूर्णांकित करने पर परिमाण की कोटि मिलती है: पृथ्वी का व्यास 1.28 × 10⁷ m कोटि 10⁷ m; हाइड्रोजन परमाणु (1.06 × 10⁻¹⁰ m) कोटि 10⁻¹⁰ m — 17 कोटि छोटा।Trailing zeros ka confusion hataane ke liye har measurement ko scientific notation a × 10ᵇ (1 ≤ a < 10) mein likhiye. a ke saare digits significant; 10 ki power se farak nahi: 4.700 m = 4.700 × 10² cm = 4.700 × 10⁻³ km — sab mein chaar. a ko 1 (a ≤ 5) ya 10 (5 < a ≤ 10) karne par order of magnitude milta hai: Earth ka diameter 1.28 × 10⁷ m → order 10⁷ m; hydrogen atom (1.06 × 10⁻¹⁰ m) → 10⁻¹⁰ m — 17 order chhota.

If l = 16.2 cm ± 0.1 cm (± 0.6 %) and b = 10.1 cm ± 0.1 cm (± 1 %), then l × b = 163.62 cm² ± 1.6 % = 163.62 ± 2.6 cm², quoted as 164 ± 3 cm². Data given to n significant figures give a result valid to n figures — but subtraction can reduce them (12.9 g − 7.06 g = 5.8 g, not 5.84 g). The relative error depends on the number too: ± 0.01 g is ± 1 % of 1.02 g but only ± 0.1 % of 9.89 g. Agar l = 16.2 cm ± 0.1 cm (± 0.6 %) aur b = 10.1 cm ± 0.1 cm (± 1 %), to l × b = 163.62 cm² ± 1.6 % = 163.62 ± 2.6 cm², yaani 164 ± 3 cm². n s.f. wale data se result bhi n figures tak valid — par subtraction mein kam ho sakte hain (12.9 g − 7.06 g = 5.8 g, 5.84 g nahi). Relative error number par bhi depend: ± 0.01 g, 1.02 g ka ± 1 % hai par 9.89 g ka sirf ± 0.1 %.
Physical quantities ki dimensions
All mechanical quantities can be written in terms of three base quantities: length [L], mass [M], time [T] (with [A], [K], [mol], [cd] for the others). The dimensions of a quantity are the powers to which the base quantities are raised to represent it. Volume = length³ → dimensions [L³] (3 in length, 0 in mass and time). Force = mass × acceleration → [M L T⁻²]. Only the nature of the quantity matters, not its magnitude — a change in velocity, initial velocity and final velocity all have [L T⁻¹]. Saari mechanical quantities teen base quantities mein likhi ja sakti hain: length [L], mass [M], time [T] (baaki ke liye [A], [K], [mol], [cd]). Kisi quantity ki dimensions wo powers hain jin par base quantities ko raise karke use represent karte hain. Volume = length³ → [L³] (length mein 3, mass aur time mein 0). Force = mass × acceleration → [M L T⁻²]. Sirf quantity ki nature matter karti hai, magnitude nahi — velocity change, initial aur final velocity sab [L T⁻¹].
Dimensional formula aur dimensional equation
The expression showing how and which base quantities represent a quantity is its dimensional formula: volume [M⁰ L³ T⁰], speed [M⁰ L T⁻¹], acceleration [M⁰ L T⁻²], mass density [M L⁻³ T⁰]. Equating a quantity to its dimensional formula gives a dimensional equation, e.g. [V] = [M⁰ L³ T⁰], [F] = [M L T⁻²]. Wo expression jo batata hai ki kaun-si base quantities kaise kisi quantity ko represent karti hain — dimensional formula: volume [M⁰ L³ T⁰], speed [M⁰ L T⁻¹], acceleration [M⁰ L T⁻²], density [M L⁻³ T⁰]. Quantity ko uske dimensional formula ke barabar likhna = dimensional equation, jaise [V] = [M⁰ L³ T⁰], [F] = [M L T⁻²].
1.6Dimensional analysis and its applicationsविमीय विश्लेषण एवं इसके अनुप्रयोगDimensional analysis aur uske upyog
Only quantities with the same dimensions can be added, subtracted or equated (you cannot add velocity to force). Dimensions can be treated like algebraic symbols — they cancel in division. Quantities on both sides of an equation must have the same dimensions: this is the principle of homogeneity. Sirf same dimensions wali quantities hi jod, ghata ya barabar ki ja sakti hain (velocity ko force mein nahi jod sakte). Dimensions ko algebra symbols ki tarah treat kar sakte hain — divide karne par cancel. Equation ke dono sides ki dimensions same honi chahiye: principle of homogeneity.
1.6.1Checking the dimensional consistency of equationsसमीकरणों की विमीय संगति की जाँचEquations ki dimensional consistency check
If an equation fails the dimension test it is definitely wrong; if it passes, it is not necessarily right — dimensionless constants (½, 2π) and dimensionless functions (sin θ, eˣ, log) cannot be checked. Example: x = x₀ + v₀t + ½at² → [L] = [L] + [L T⁻¹][T] + [L T⁻²][T²] = [L] ✓. उदाहरण: x = x₀ + v₀t + ½at² → [L] = [L] + [L T⁻¹][T] + [L T⁻²][T²] = [L] ✓।Agar equation dimension test mein fail ho to pakka galat hai; pass ho to zaroori nahi sahi ho — dimensionless constants (½, 2π) aur functions (sin θ, eˣ, log) check nahi hote. Example: x = x₀ + v₀t + ½at² → [L] = [L] + [L T⁻¹][T] + [L T⁻²][T²] = [L] ✓.
Physical quantities ke beech relation nikalna
If a quantity depends on others as a product of powers, dimensions can give the relation (up to a dimensionless constant). Write the quantity ∝ product of the others raised to unknown powers, equate the powers of M, L and T on both sides, and solve. See the pendulum diagram. Agar koi quantity doosri quantities par powers ke product ki tarah depend kare, to dimensions se relation (ek dimensionless constant tak) nikal sakte hain.
