Hydrocarbons ki classification
Hydrocarbons contain only carbon and hydrogen. LPG, CNG, petrol, kerosene and diesel are hydrocarbon mixtures used as fuels. They are saturated (only C–C single bonds: alkanes, cycloalkanes), unsaturated (C=C or C≡C: alkenes, alkynes) or aromatic (benzene and its relatives). Hydrocarbons mein sirf carbon aur hydrogen. LPG, CNG, petrol, kerosene and diesel are mixtures of hydrocarbons that we use as fuels. There are three kinds. Saturated: only C–C single bonds (alkanes, cycloalkanes). Unsaturated: they have C=C or C≡C (alkenes, alkynes). Aromatic: benzene and compounds like it.

Alkanes
Alkanes (paraffins, “little affinity”) have the general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. Every carbon is sp³ and tetrahedral; C–C = 154 pm, C–H = 112 pm. From C₄ onwards they show chain isomerism (butane and isobutane; pentane has 3 isomers, hexane 5). Carbons are called 1°, 2°, 3° or 4° according to how many other carbons they are bonded to. IUPAC naming follows Unit 8 (longest chain, lowest locants, alphabetical prefixes). Alkanes (paraffins, “kam affinity”) ka general formula CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. Har carbon sp³ aur tetrahedral; C–C = 154 pm, C–H = 112 pm. IUPAC naming Unit 8 jaisi (longest chain, lowest locants, alphabetical prefixes).Alkanes are also called paraffins, which means “little affinity” (they react very little). Their general formula is CₙH₂ₙ₊₂. Every carbon is sp³ and tetrahedral. Bond lengths: C–C = 154 pm, C–H = 112 pm. From C₄ onwards they show chain isomerism — same formula, different chain shape (butane and isobutane; pentane has 3 isomers, hexane has 5). A carbon is called 1°, 2°, 3° or 4° (primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary) depending on how many other carbons it is joined to. IUPAC naming follows Unit 8: find the longest chain, give the lowest numbers, and write prefixes in alphabetical order.

Alkanes ki properties
Alkanes are non-polar: C₁–C₄ are gases, C₅–C₁₇ liquids, higher ones solids. Boiling point rises with molar mass (stronger van der Waals forces) and falls with branching — branched isomers are more nearly spherical, have less surface area and weaker forces (pentane 309 K > isopentane 301 K > neopentane 282.5 K). They dissolve in non-polar solvents, not in water (“like dissolves like”). Alkanes non-polar: C₁–C₄ gas, C₅–C₁₇ liquid, upar wale solid. Molar mass ke saath boiling point badhta hai (strong van der Waals) aur branching se ghatta hai — branched isomers lagbhag gol, kam surface area, kamzor forces (pentane 309 K > isopentane 301 K > neopentane 282.5 K). The boiling point goes up as molar mass goes up (stronger van der Waals forces). It goes down with branching: branched isomers are rounder (more like a ball), have less surface touching other molecules, and so weaker forces. In ethane, the two extreme forms are staggered (H atoms as far apart as possible) and eclipsed (H atoms exactly behind each other). We draw them as sawhorse or Newman projections. In the eclipsed form, the bond pairs push each other; this is called torsional strain. The energy difference is only about 12.5 kJ mol⁻¹. So rotation is almost free, and the conformers cannot be separated. The staggered form has the least torsional strain, so it is the most stable.

Alkenes
Alkenes (olefins, “oil forming”) contain one C=C and have the formula CₙH₂ₙ. The double bond is one σ (sp²–sp²) and one π (sideways p–p) bond: C=C = 134 pm, bond enthalpy 681 kJ mol⁻¹. The loosely held π electrons make alkenes reactive towards electrophiles; addition is their typical reaction. Names end in -ene, numbered so the double bond gets the lowest locant (CH₃CH=CHCH₃ but-2-ene, CH₂=C(CH₃)₂ 2-methylprop-1-ene). Cis zyada polar, usually zyada boiling point; trans better packing, zyada melting point. CH₂=CHCl ya (CH₃)₂C=CH₂ mein cis–trans nahi. The π bond stops rotation around C=C. So if each double-bond carbon has two different groups, the alkene exists as two geometrical isomers. cis: the similar groups are on the same side. trans: they are on opposite sides. The cis form is more polar and usually has a higher boiling point. The trans form packs better in a solid, so it has a higher melting point. CH₂=CHCl and (CH₃)₂C=CH₂ have no cis–trans isomers, because one carbon has two identical groups. 👉 CH₂=CHCl or (CH₃)₂C=CH₂ have no cis–trans isomers

Aromatic hydrocarbons (arenes) are benzenoid (with a benzene ring: benzene, toluene, naphthalene) or non-benzenoid. Disubstituted benzenes are named with locants 1,2 (ortho, o-), 1,3 (meta, m-) and 1,4 (para, p-), e.g. 1,2-dimethylbenzene (o-xylene). Benzene, C₆H₆, was isolated by Faraday (1825). Aromatic hydrocarbons (arenes) benzenoid (benzene ring wale: benzene, toluene, naphthalene) ya non-benzenoid. Benzene, C₆H₆, Faraday (1825) ne alag ki.Aromatic hydrocarbons (arenes) are of two kinds: benzenoid (with a benzene ring: benzene, toluene, naphthalene) and non-benzenoid. When benzene has two groups, we show their positions as 1,2 (ortho, o-), 1,3 (meta, m-) or 1,4 (para, p-). Example: 1,2-dimethylbenzene is o-xylene. Benzene, C₆H₆, was first separated (isolated) by Faraday in 1825.

Each carbon is sp²; the six p orbitals overlap to give a delocalised π cloud above and below the ring. This delocalisation gives extra stability (resonance energy), so benzene behaves as a saturated compound towards addition and prefers substitution. Aromaticity (Hückel rule): planar, cyclic, complete π delocalisation and (4n + 2) π electrons. Kekulé ne alternate double bonds wala chhah carbon ka ring diya; dono Kekulé structures resonance forms hain aur asli molecule unka hybrid — saare C–C 139 pm. Har carbon sp²; chhah p orbitals overlap karke ring ke upar-neeche delocalised π cloud. Isse extra stability (resonance energy), isliye benzene addition mein saturated jaisi aur substitution pasand karti hai. Aromaticity (Hückel rule): planar, cyclic, poora π delocalisation aur (4n + 2) π electrons.Kekulé said benzene is a ring of six carbons with double bonds taking turns with single bonds. The two Kekulé structures are resonance forms, and the real molecule is their hybrid — so all six C–C bonds are equal, 139 pm. Each carbon is sp². The six p orbitals overlap all around the ring. This makes one spread-out (delocalised) π cloud above and below the ring. This spreading gives extra stability (resonance energy). So benzene does not like addition reactions (it behaves like a saturated compound there) and prefers substitution. Aromaticity (Hückel rule): the molecule must be flat (planar), a ring (cyclic), have its π electrons spread over the whole ring, and have (4n + 2) π electrons.
