In this chapter we study how the components of the environment interact with each other and how we impact the environment. Is chapter mein padhenge ki environment ke components aapas mein kaise interact karte hain aur hum environment par kaise asar daalte hain.
13.1Ecosystem — what are its components?
All the interacting organisms in an area together with the non-living constituents of the environment form an ecosystem. It has biotic components (living organisms) and abiotic components (physical factors like temperature, rainfall, wind, soil and minerals). A garden is an ecosystem. Forests, ponds and lakes are natural ecosystems; gardens and crop-fields are human-made (artificial) ecosystems. An aquarium is also human-made (Activity 13.1). Kisi area ke saare aapas mein interact karne wale jeev aur environment ke non-living constituents milkar ecosystem banate hain. Isme biotic components (living) aur abiotic components (temperature, baarish, hawa, mitti, minerals jaise physical factors) hote hain. Garden ek ecosystem hai. Jungle, talaab aur jheel natural ecosystems hain; garden aur khet human-made (artificial) hain. Aquarium bhi human-made hai (Activity 13.1).
Producers: green plants and certain bacteria that make food (sugar, starch) from inorganic substances by photosynthesis. Consumers: organisms that eat the food made by producers, directly or indirectly — herbivores, carnivores, omnivores and parasites. Decomposers: bacteria and fungi that break down dead remains and wastes into simple inorganic substances which go into the soil and are used again by plants. Producers (utpadak): hare paudhe aur kuch bacteria jo photosynthesis se inorganic cheezon se khana (sugar, starch) banate hain. Consumers (upbhokta): jo producers ka banaya khana seedhe ya indirectly khaate hain — herbivores, carnivores, omnivores aur parasites. Decomposers (apmaarjak): bacteria aur fungi jo mare hue avshesh aur waste ko simple inorganic cheezon mein todte hain; ye mitti mein jaakar paudhon dwara phir use hote hain.
Food chain aur web
Food chains (examples)आहार शृंखला (उदाहरण)Food chains (examples)NCERT cf. Fig 13.1 · 7 tappable partsOpenA series of organisms feeding on one another is a food chain (e.g. grass → deer → lion). Each step is a trophic level: producers (autotrophs) — 1st; herbivores / primary consumers — 2nd; small carnivores / secondary consumers — 3rd; larger carnivores / tertiary consumers — 4th. Ek-doosre ko khaane wale jeevon ki series food chain hai (jaise ghaas → hiran → sher). Har step ek trophic level hai: producers (autotrophs) — 1st; herbivores / primary consumers — 2nd; chhote carnivores / secondary consumers — 3rd; bade carnivores / tertiary consumers — 4th.
Trophic levelsपोषी स्तरTrophic levelsNCERT Fig 13.2 · 5 tappable partsOpenEnergy flows from one component to another. Green plants in a terrestrial ecosystem capture about 1% of the sunlight falling on their leaves. At each step a great deal of energy is lost as heat, some goes into digestion and work; on average only 10% of the food eaten becomes the body of that level and is available to the next (10% rule). So food chains usually have only 3 or 4 steps, and the greatest number of individuals is of producers. Energy ek component se doosre mein flow hoti hai. Zameeni ecosystem mein hare paudhe patton par padne wali dhoop ka lagbhag 1% pakadte hain. Har step par bahut energy heat ban kar nikal jaati hai, kuch digestion aur kaam mein lagti hai; average mein khaaye gaye khane ka sirf 10% us level ke body mein badal kar agle level ko milta hai (10% rule). Isliye food chain mein aksar 3 ya 4 steps hote hain aur sabse zyada sankhya producers ki hoti hai.
Each organism is generally eaten by two or more kinds of organisms, so the relationships form branching lines — a food web (Fig 13.3). Har jeev ko aksar do ya zyada tarah ke jeev khaate hain, isliye rishte branching lines ban jaate hain — food web (Fig 13.3).
Flow of energy in an ecosystemपारितंत्र में ऊर्जा का प्रवाहFlow of energy in an ecosystemNCERT Fig 13.4 · 7 tappable partsOpenBiological magnification: pesticides and other chemicals used on crops wash into soil and water, enter plants and aquatic organisms, and so enter the food chain. Being non-degradable, they accumulate progressively at each trophic level. Humans are at the top of food chains, so the maximum concentration accumulates in our bodies. That is why wheat, rice, vegetables, fruits and even meat carry pesticide residues that washing cannot always remove. Biological magnification: fasalon par daale gaye pesticides aur chemicals mitti aur paani mein bahkar paudhon aur jaleey jeevon mein pahunchte hain, aur aise food chain mein ghus jaate hain.

13.2.1Ozone layer and how it is getting depletedओजोन परत एवं उसका अपक्षयOzone layer aur uska ghatna
Ozone layer and its depletionओजोन परत एवं उसका अपक्षयOzone layer and its depletionNCERT Sec 13.2.1 · 6 tappable partsOpenOzone (O3) is a molecule of three oxygen atoms. At ground level ozone is a deadly poison, but at the higher levels of the atmosphere it shields the earth from ultraviolet (UV) radiation of the Sun, which damages organisms (e.g. causes skin cancer in humans). It forms when UV radiation splits O2 into free oxygen atoms which then combine with O2. Ozone (O3) oxygen ke teen atoms ka molecule hai. Zameen ke paas ozone ek zehreela padarth (poison) hai, par atmosphere ki upper layers mein ye Sun ki ultraviolet (UV) radiation se dharti ko bachati hai, jo jeevon ko nuksaan karti hai (jaise insaanon mein skin cancer). Ye tab banti hai jab UV radiation O2 ko todkar free oxygen atoms banati hai jo phir O2 se judte hain.
Ozone began to drop sharply in the 1980s, linked to synthetic chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) used as refrigerants and in fire extinguishers. In 1987, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) forged an agreement to freeze CFC production at 1986 levels. Now all manufacturers must make CFC-free refrigerators. Ozone ki maatra 1980s mein tezi se ghatne lagi, jiska link refrigerants aur fire extinguishers mein use hone wale synthetic chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) se hai. 1987 mein United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) mein CFC production ko 1986 ke level par freeze karne ka agreement hua. Ab saari companies ke liye CFC-free fridge banana zaroori hai.
13.2.2Managing the garbage we produceहमारे द्वारा उत्पादित कचरे का प्रबंधनHamare banaye kachre ka management
Enzymes are specific — a particular enzyme breaks down a particular substance (that is why we get no energy by eating coal!). So many human-made materials like plastics are not broken down by bacteria or other saprophytes; they persist for a long time. Substances broken down by biological processes are biodegradable; those not broken down this way are non-biodegradable — they may stay inert for long or harm members of the ecosystem. Enzymes specific hote hain — ek khaas enzyme ek khaas cheez ko hi todta hai (isiliye coal khaane se energy nahi milti!). Isliye plastic jaise human-made materials bacteria ya doosre saprophytes se nahi toot-te; ye lambe samay tak bane rehte hain. Biological processes se tootne wali cheezein biodegradable aur aise na tootne wali non-biodegradable kehlati hain — ye lambe samay tak aise hi pade reh sakte hain ya ecosystem ke sadasyon ko nuksaan kar sakte hain.
Better life-styles and the disposable habit increase waste, and changes in packaging make much of it non-biodegradable. Disposable cups in trains: plastic glasses once returned to the vendor were replaced by disposables for hygiene; clay kulhads were suggested, but making them on a large scale would lose fertile top-soil; now disposable paper cups are used. Behtar lifestyle aur disposable cheezon ki aadat se kachra badhta hai, aur packaging ke badlav se iska bada hissa non-biodegradable ho gaya hai. Train mein disposable cups: pehle wapas kiye jaane wale plastic glass hygiene ke liye disposable cups se badle gaye; mitti ke kulhad suggest hue, par bade paimane par inhe banane se upjaau upari mitti (top-soil) nasht hoti; ab disposable paper cups use hote hain.
