Introduction
Recall from Class XI: the sample space S is the set of all outcomes of a random experiment, an event E is a subset of S, 0 \le P(E) \le 1, P(S) = 1, P(E') = 1 - P(E), and the addition rule P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B). Throughout this chapter, NCERT takes experiments with equally likely outcomes, unless stated otherwise. P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B)। Class XI se yaad kijiye: kisi random experiment ke saare outcomes ka set sample space S hai, event E, S ka ek subset hai, 0 \le P(E) \le 1, P(S) = 1, P(E') = 1 - P(E) aur addition rule P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B). Is poore chapter mein NCERT, jab tak alag se na kaha jaye, equally likely outcomes wale experiments leti hai.S = all outcomes, event = subset of S, P(E') = 1 − P(E), P(A∪B) = P(A) + P(B) − P(A∩B).
13.2Conditional Probabilityसप्रतिबंध प्रायिकताConditional Probability
NCERT's working: S = \{HHH, HHT, HTH, THH, HTT, THT, TTH, TTT\}, each outcome with probability \dfrac{1}{8}. E = "at least two heads" = \{HHH, HHT, HTH, THH\}, F = "first coin shows tail" = \{THH, THT, TTH, TTT\}. So P(E) = \dfrac{4}{8} = \dfrac{1}{2}, P(F) = \dfrac{1}{2}, E \cap F = \{THH\} and P(E \cap F) = \dfrac{1}{8}. Given F, the sample point of F favourable to E is only THH, so P(E|F) = \dfrac{1}{4}. The favourable points are exactly the points of E \cap F, so P(E|F) = \dfrac{n(E \cap F)}{n(F)} = \dfrac{n(E \cap F)/n(S)}{n(F)/n(S)} = \dfrac{P(E \cap F)}{P(F)} This is valid only when P(F) \ne 0, i.e. F \ne \varphi (we cannot divide by 0).NCERT अतः P(E) = \dfrac{4}{8} = \dfrac{1}{2}, P(F) = \dfrac{1}{2}, E \cap F = \{THH\} तथा P(E \cap F) = \dfrac{1}{8}। NCERT ka hal: S = \{HHH, HHT, HTH, THH, HTT, THT, TTH, TTT\}, har outcome ki probability \dfrac{1}{8}. E = "kam se kam do heads" = \{HHH, HHT, HTH, THH\}, F = "pehle coin par tail" = \{THH, THT, TTH, TTT\}. To P(E) = \dfrac{4}{8} = \dfrac{1}{2}, P(F) = \dfrac{1}{2}, E \cap F = \{THH\} aur P(E \cap F) = \dfrac{1}{8}. F diya ho to F ka sirf THH point E ke favour mein hai, isliye P(E|F) = \dfrac{1}{4}. Favourable points theek E \cap F ke points hain, isliye P(E|F) = \dfrac{n(E \cap F)}{n(F)} = \dfrac{n(E \cap F)/n(S)}{n(F)/n(S)} = \dfrac{P(E \cap F)}{P(F)} Ye sirf tab valid hai jab P(F) \ne 0 yaani F \ne \varphi (0 se divide nahi kar sakte).P(E|F) = n(E∩F)/n(F) = P(E∩F)/P(F), only when P(F) ≠ 0.

The event E \cap F means both E and F occur; it is also written EF. From the definition, P(E|F) = \dfrac{P(E \cap F)}{P(F)} gives P(E \cap F) = P(F) \cdot P(E|F) … (1). Also P(F|E) = \dfrac{P(F \cap E)}{P(E)} = \dfrac{P(E \cap F)}{P(E)} (since E \cap F = F \cap E), so P(E \cap F) = P(E) \cdot P(F|E) … (2). परिभाषा P(E|F) = \dfrac{P(E \cap F)}{P(F)} से P(E \cap F) = P(F) \cdot P(E|F) … (1)। साथ ही P(F|E) = \dfrac{P(F \cap E)}{P(E)} = \dfrac{P(E \cap F)}{P(E)} (क्योंकि E \cap F = F \cap E), अतः P(E \cap F) = P(E) \cdot P(F|E) … (2)।Event E \cap F ka matlab hai E aur F dono hon; ise EF bhi likhte hain. Definition P(E|F) = \dfrac{P(E \cap F)}{P(F)} se P(E \cap F) = P(F) \cdot P(E|F) … (1). Saath hi P(F|E) = \dfrac{P(F \cap E)}{P(E)} = \dfrac{P(E \cap F)}{P(E)} (kyunki E \cap F = F \cap E), isliye P(E \cap F) = P(E) \cdot P(F|E) … (2).From the definition: P(E∩F) = P(F)·P(E|F) = P(E)·P(F|E).

NCERT's card example: draw one card from 52. E = "spade", F = "ace". P(E) = \frac{13}{52} = \frac{1}{4}, P(F) = \frac{4}{52} = \frac{1}{13}, and E \cap F = "ace of spades", so P(E \cap F) = \frac{1}{52}. Then P(E|F) = \dfrac{1/52}{1/13} = \dfrac{1}{4} = P(E) and P(F|E) = \dfrac{1/52}{1/4} = \dfrac{1}{13} = P(F). Knowing the card is an ace did not change the chance of a spade, and the other way round. Such events are called independent events.NCERT तब P(E|F) = \dfrac{1/52}{1/13} = \dfrac{1}{4} = P(E) और P(F|E) = \dfrac{1/52}{1/4} = \dfrac{1}{13} = P(F)। NCERT ka card wala example: 52 mein se ek card nikaaliye. E = "spade", F = "ace". P(E) = \frac{13}{52} = \frac{1}{4}, P(F) = \frac{4}{52} = \frac{1}{13}, aur E \cap F = "ace of spades", isliye P(E \cap F) = \frac{1}{52}. Tab P(E|F) = \dfrac{1/52}{1/13} = \dfrac{1}{4} = P(E) aur P(F|E) = \dfrac{1/52}{1/4} = \dfrac{1}{13} = P(F). Spade and ace: P(spade | ace) = 1/4 = P(spade). Knowing one did not change the other.
Definition 3 comes from the multiplication rule P(E \cap F) = P(E) \cdot P(F|E) by putting P(F|E) = P(F). NCERT's remarks: (i) E and F are dependent if they are not independent, i.e. P(E \cap F) \ne P(E) \cdot P(F). (ii) "Independent" is defined using probabilities; "mutually exclusive" is defined using the events themselves (no common outcome). Independent events may have common outcomes. Two independent events with nonzero probabilities cannot be mutually exclusive, and two mutually exclusive events with nonzero probabilities cannot be independent. (iii) Two experiments are independent if P(E \cap F) = P(E) \cdot P(F) for every event E of the first and F of the second. (iv) Three events A, B, C are mutually independent if all four hold: P(A \cap B) = P(A)P(B), P(A \cap C) = P(A)P(C), P(B \cap C) = P(B)P(C) and P(A \cap B \cap C) = P(A)P(B)P(C). If even one fails, they are not independent. NCERT की टिप्पणियाँ: (i) E और F पराश्रित हैं यदि वे स्वतंत्र नहीं हैं, अर्थात् P(E \cap F) \ne P(E) \cdot P(F)। P(A \cap B) = P(A)P(B), P(A \cap C) = P(A)P(C), P(B \cap C) = P(B)P(C) तथा P(A \cap B \cap C) = P(A)P(B)P(C)। Definition 3, multiplication rule P(E \cap F) = P(E) \cdot P(F|E) mein P(F|E) = P(F) rakhne se milti hai. NCERT ke remarks: (i) E aur F dependent hain agar wo independent nahi hain, yaani P(E \cap F) \ne P(E) \cdot P(F). Independent events mein common outcomes ho sakte hain. Nonzero probability wale do independent events mutually exclusive nahi ho sakte, aur nonzero probability wale do mutually exclusive events independent nahi ho sakte. (iii) Do experiments independent hain agar pehle ke har event E aur doosre ke har event F ke liye P(E \cap F) = P(E) \cdot P(F). (iv) Teen events A, B, C mutually independent hain agar chaaron sach hon: P(A \cap B) = P(A)P(B), P(A \cap C) = P(A)P(C), P(B \cap C) = P(B)P(C) aur P(A \cap B \cap C) = P(A)P(B)P(C). Agar ek bhi galat ho, to wo independent nahi hain.Dependent = not independent. Independent ≠ mutually exclusive. Three events need all four product rules.

13.5Bayes' Theoremबेज़-प्रमेयBayes' Theorem
NCERT's opening picture: Bag I has 2 white and 3 red balls, Bag II has 4 white and 5 red balls. One ball is drawn at random from one of the bags. We can find P(\text{Bag I}) = \frac{1}{2} or P(\text{white}|\text{Bag I}) = \frac{2}{5} easily. But can we find the probability that the ball came from Bag II, if we are told its colour? Thomas Bayes solved this problem of reverse probability using conditional probability; his result was published after his death, in 1763. First we need two ideas: a partition, and the theorem of total probability.NCERT का आरंभिक उदाहरण: थैले I में 2 सफ़ेद और 3 लाल गेंदें हैं, थैले II में 4 सफ़ेद और 5 लाल। P(\text{थैला I}) = \frac{1}{2} या P(\text{सफ़ेद}|\text{थैला I}) = \frac{2}{5} आसानी से मिलते हैं। NCERT ka shuruaati example: Bag I mein 2 safed aur 3 laal balls hain, Bag II mein 4 safed aur 5 laal. Kisi ek bag se ek ball randomly nikaali jaati hai. P(\text{Bag I}) = \frac{1}{2} ya P(\text{white}|\text{Bag I}) = \frac{2}{5} aasaani se milte hain. Pehle do ideas chahiye: partition, aur total probability ka theorem.Two bags: we can find P(white | Bag I); Bayes finds P(Bag II | white).
13.5.1Partition of a sample spaceएक प्रतिदर्श समष्टि का विभाजनSample space ka partition
Examples from NCERT: any nonempty event E and its complement E′ form a partition of S, since E \cap E' = \varphi and E \cup E' = S. For any two events E and F, the four pieces \{E \cap F', E \cap F, E' \cap F, E' \cap F'\} form a partition of S (Fig 13.3). A partition is not unique — the same S can be cut up in many ways.NCERT NCERT ke examples: koi bhi nonempty event E aur uska complement E′, S ka partition banate hain, kyunki E \cap E' = \varphi aur E \cup E' = S. Kinhi do events E aur F ke liye chaar tukde \{E \cap F', E \cap F, E' \cap F, E' \cap F'\}, S ka partition banate hain (Fig 13.3). Partition unique nahi hota — ek hi S ko kai tarah baanta ja sakta hai.E and E′ form a partition; so do the four pieces E∩F′, E∩F, E′∩F, E′∩F′.

Proof (NCERT). Since E_1, \ldots, E_n is a partition, S = E_1 \cup E_2 \cup \ldots \cup E_n and E_i \cap E_j = \varphi for i \ne j. For any event A, A = A \cap S = A \cap (E_1 \cup \ldots \cup E_n) = (A \cap E_1) \cup (A \cap E_2) \cup \ldots \cup (A \cap E_n). Here A \cap E_i \subseteq E_i and A \cap E_j \subseteq E_j, and E_i, E_j are disjoint for i \ne j, so the pieces A \cap E_i are also disjoint. Hence P(A) = P(A \cap E_1) + P(A \cap E_2) + \ldots + P(A \cap E_n). By the multiplication rule, P(A \cap E_i) = P(E_i)\,P(A|E_i) (as P(E_i) \ne 0), which gives the result.उपपत्ति (NCERT)। चूँकि E_1, \ldots, E_n एक विभाजन है, S = E_1 \cup E_2 \cup \ldots \cup E_n तथा i \ne j के लिए E_i \cap E_j = \varphi। A = A \cap S = A \cap (E_1 \cup \ldots \cup E_n) = (A \cap E_1) \cup (A \cap E_2) \cup \ldots \cup (A \cap E_n)। यहाँ A \cap E_i \subseteq E_i और A \cap E_j \subseteq E_j, तथा i \ne j के लिए E_i, E_j असंयुक्त हैं, इसलिए टुकड़े A \cap E_i भी असंयुक्त हैं। P(A) = P(A \cap E_1) + P(A \cap E_2) + \ldots + P(A \cap E_n)। P(A \cap E_i) = P(E_i)\,P(A|E_i) Proof (NCERT). Kyunki E_1, \ldots, E_n ek partition hai, S = E_1 \cup E_2 \cup \ldots \cup E_n aur i \ne j ke liye E_i \cap E_j = \varphi. Kisi bhi event A ke liye A = A \cap S = A \cap (E_1 \cup \ldots \cup E_n) = (A \cap E_1) \cup (A \cap E_2) \cup \ldots \cup (A \cap E_n). Yahan A \cap E_i \subseteq E_i aur A \cap E_j \subseteq E_j, aur i \ne j ke liye E_i, E_j disjoint hain, isliye tukde A \cap E_i bhi disjoint hain. Isliye P(A) = P(A \cap E_1) + P(A \cap E_2) + \ldots + P(A \cap E_n). Multiplication rule se P(A \cap E_i) = P(E_i)\,P(A|E_i) (kyunki P(E_i) \ne 0), jisse result milta hai.A is cut into disjoint pieces A∩Eᵢ; add them; each piece = P(Eᵢ)·P(A|Eᵢ).
