🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeStart hereImagine a shopkeeper with limited money and limited space. He wants the most profit. He cannot buy "anything" — the money and the space put limits. Linear programming is simply a neat way to find the best choice inside the limits. All you need from Class XI: how to draw a line and shade one side of it (a linear inequality). Yahan se shuru kijiyeSochiye, ek dukaandaar ke paas limited paisa aur limited jagah hai. Wo sabse zyada profit chahta hai. Wo "kuch bhi" nahi khareed sakta — paisa aur jagah limit lagate hain. Linear programming bas limits ke andar sabse accha choice khojne ka ek saaf tareeka hai. Class XI se aapko bas itna chahiye: line kheenchna aur uske ek taraf shading karna (linear inequality).

NCERT starts with a real problem. A furniture dealer deals in only two items — tables and chairs. He has Rs 50,000 to invest and storage space of at most 60 pieces. A table costs Rs 2500 and a chair Rs 500. He makes a profit of Rs 250 per table and Rs 75 per chair. How many tables and chairs should he buy to maximise his total profit (assuming he can sell all of them)?NCERT Ek furniture dealer sirf do cheezon — tables aur chairs — ka business karta hai. Uske paas invest karne ke liye Rs 50,000 hain aur zyada se zyada 60 pieces rakhne ki jagah hai. Ek table Rs 2500 ki aur ek chair Rs 500 ki hai. Ek table par Rs 250 aur ek chair par Rs 75 profit hota hai. Total profit maximum karne ke liye use kitni tables aur chairs khareedni chahiye (maan lijiye wo sab bech sakta hai)?

Problems which seek to maximise (or minimise) profit (or cost) are called optimisation problems. A special but very important class of optimisation problems is the linear programming problem (LPP). LPPs are used widely in industry, commerce and management science. In this chapter we solve them by the graphical method only. Jo problems profit (ya cost) ko maximise (ya minimise) karna chahti hain, unhe optimisation problems kehte hain. Optimisation problems ki ek special par bahut important class hai linear programming problem (LPP). Industry, commerce aur management science mein inka bahut use hota hai. 12.2Linear Programming Problem and its Mathematical Formulationरैखिक प्रोग्रामन समस्या और उसका गणितीय सूत्रीकरणLinear programming problem aur uska mathematical formulation

Look at the dealer again. (i) He can invest in tables, or chairs, or a mix — and each choice gives a different profit. (ii) There are constraints: investment at most Rs 50,000, storage at most 60 pieces. Dealer ko phir dekhiye. (i) Wo tables mein, ya chairs mein, ya dono ke mix mein invest kar sakta hai — aur har choice par profit alag hai. (ii) Kuch constraints hain: investment zyada se zyada Rs 50,000, storage zyada se zyada 60 pieces.

Dealer — three plans (Section 12.2)Find the profit for: (a) tables only, (b) chairs only, (c) 10 tables and 50 chairs. Dealer — teen plans (Section 12.2)Profit nikaliye: (a) sirf tables, (b) sirf chairs, (c) 10 tables aur 50 chairs.
Solution — step by step (5)Hal — step by step (5)
  1. (a) All the money on tables buys 20 tables (20 pieces fit in the space). (a) Poora paisa tables par: 20 tables aati hain (20 pieces jagah mein aa jaate hain). Profit = Rs 5000.
    50000 \div 2500 = 20,\qquad 250 \times 20 = 5000
  2. (b) Money allows 100 chairs, but storage allows only 60 pieces.(b)
    50000 \div 500 = 100 > 60
  3. So he is forced to buy only 60 chairs. Profit = Rs 4500. Isliye wo sirf 60 chairs hi khareed sakta hai. Profit = Rs 4500.
    60 \times 75 = 4500
  4. (c) This plan uses exactly all the money and all the space — allowed.(c) (c) Ye plan theek poora paisa aur poori jagah use karta hai — allowed hai.
    10 \times 2500 + 50 \times 500 = 50000,\quad 10 + 50 = 60
  5. Profit = Rs 6250: the mixed plan earns the most of these three. But is it the best of ALL plans? We need a method. Profit = Rs 6250: mixed plan in teeno mein sabse zyada kamata hai. Par kya ye SAARE plans mein best hai? Iske liye method chahiye.
    10 \times 250 + 50 \times 75 = 2500 + 3750 = 6250

✔ Rs 5000, Rs 4500 and Rs 6250. Different plans give different profits. Rs 5000, Rs 4500 aur Rs 6250. Alag plans par alag profit.

Remarks (NCERT)From these examples we notice some general features of linear programming problems: (i) The feasible region is always a convex region. (ii) The maximum (or minimum) solution of the objective function occurs at the vertex (corner) of the feasible region. If two corner points produce the same maximum (or minimum) value of the objective function, then every point on the line segment joining these points will also give the same maximum (or minimum) value. Remarks (NCERT)In examples se hum LPP ki kuch general baatein dekhte hain: (i) Feasible region hamesha ek convex region hota hai. (ii) Objective function ka maximum (ya minimum) solution feasible region ke vertex (corner) par hota hai. Agar do corner points objective function ki same maximum (ya minimum) value dein, to in points ko jodne wale line segment ka har point bhi wahi maximum (ya minimum) value dega.
A region is convex if the line segment joining any two of its points lies completely inside it (no dents). That is why the "last touch" of a sliding line is always at a corner or along an edge. Koi region convex hai agar uske kinhi do points ko jodne wala line segment poori tarah uske andar rahe (koi dent nahi). Isiliye khiskti line ka "aakhri touch" hamesha corner par ya kisi edge par hota hai.
⚠️ Mistakes that cost marks⚠️ ग़लतियाँ जिनसे अंक कटते हैं⚠️ Galtiyan jinse marks katte hain(1) Forgetting x \ge 0,\ y \ge 0 — the region must stay in the first quadrant. (2) Shading the wrong side: always test a point (O, unless the line passes through O — then use a point like (1, 0) or (0, 1)). (3) Reading a corner from the graph by eye — solve the two line equations to get exact corners like \left(\frac{20}{19}, \frac{45}{19}\right). (4) Missing a corner: list every point where two boundary lines (including the axes) meet ON the region. (5) Unbounded region: writing the smallest corner value as "minimum" without the open half-plane check. (6) Two equal best corners: write "at every point of the segment joining them", not just one point. (7) Dividing an inequality by a negative number without reversing the sign.(1) x \ge 0,\ y \ge (1) x \ge 0,\ y \ge 0 bhool jaana — region first quadrant mein hi rehna chahiye. (4) Koi corner chhoot jaana: jahan bhi do boundary lines (axes sahit) region par milti hain, sab likhiye. (5) Unbounded region: open half-plane check ke bina sabse chhote corner value ko "minimum" likh dena. (6) Do equal best corners: sirf ek point nahi, "unhe jodne wale segment ke har point par" likhiye.
🏆 Topper box🏆 टॉपर बॉक्स🏆 Topper boxShortcut for "no maximum" in an unbounded region: if Z keeps growing along a direction that stays inside the region, there is no maximum. In Exercise 12.1 Q9 (Z = -x + 2y, region going upwards), moving up from (3, 2) to (3, 2 + t) stays feasible and Z grows by 2t — so no maximum. Still write the NCERT check: the half-plane -x + 2y > 1 meets the region. Unbounded region mein "koi maximum nahi" ka shortcut: agar region ke andar kisi direction mein chalte hue Z badhta hi jaaye, to maximum nahi hai. Exercise 12.1 Q9 (Z = -x + 2y, region upar ki taraf) mein (3, 2) se (3, 2 + t) tak upar jaane par point feasible rehta hai aur Z, 2t badhta hai — isliye maximum nahi. Phir bhi NCERT wala check likhiye: half-plane -x + 2y > 1 region se milta hai.

Summary (NCERT). A linear programming problem is one that is concerned with finding the optimal value (maximum or minimum) of a linear function of several variables (called objective function) subject to the conditions that the variables are non-negative and satisfy a set of linear inequalities (called linear constraints). Variables are sometimes called decision variables and are non-negative. Summary (NCERT). Historical Note (NCERT)Linear programming problems came to the forefront in World War II, when war operations had to be planned to economise expenditure. NCERT's note says the first LPP — the transportation problem — was formulated in 1941 by the Russian mathematician L. Kantorovich and the American economist F. L. Hitchcock, working independently. In 1945 the English economist G. Stigler described the problem of determining an optimal diet. In 1947 the American economist G. B. Dantzig suggested the simplex method, an iterative procedure that solves any LPP in a finite number of steps. L. Kantorovich and the American mathematical economist T. C. Koopmans were awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1975 for their pioneering work in linear programming. Historical Note (NCERT)World War II mein, jab war operations ki planning kharcha kam karne ke liye karni padi, tab linear programming problems saamne aayin. NCERT ke note ke anusaar pehli LPP — transportation problem — 1941 mein Russian mathematician L. Kantorovich aur American economist F. L. Hitchcock ne ek-doosre se alag-alag formulate ki. 1945 mein English economist G. Stigler ne optimal diet tay karne ki problem batayi. 1947 mein American economist G. B. Dantzig ne simplex method suggest kiya, jo kisi bhi LPP ko finite steps mein hal karne ka iterative tareeka hai. Linear programming mein pioneering kaam ke liye L. Kantorovich aur American mathematical economist T. C. Koopmans ko 1975 mein Economics ka Nobel Prize mila.
