🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeLook at the corner of your room. Two walls and the floor meet there, and three edges come out of that corner: one along the floor to the left, one along the floor to the right, and one going straight up. These three edges are exactly the x-axis, y-axis and z-axis. Any point in the room — the tip of a fan blade, a light bulb — is fixed by three numbers (x, y, z): how far along each edge you must walk. That is all three dimensional (3D) geometry is: geometry with three numbers per point instead of two. Apne kamre ke ek kone ko dekhiye. Wahan do deewarein aur floor milte hain, aur us kone se teen edges nikalte hain: ek floor par left, ek floor par right, aur ek seedha upar. Yahi teen edges x-axis, y-axis aur z-axis hain. Kamre ka koi bhi point — pankhe ki blade ki nok, bulb — teen numbers (x, y, z) se fix hota hai: har edge ke saath kitna chalna hai. Three dimensional (3D) geometry bas yahi hai: har point ke liye do ki jagah teen numbers.

In Class XI you studied analytical geometry in two dimensions and an introduction to 3D geometry using only the Cartesian method. In Chapter 10 you learnt vectors. In this chapter we use vector algebra for three dimensional geometry, because it makes the study simple and elegant. We study the direction cosines and direction ratios of a line, the equation of a line in space, the angle between two lines and the shortest distance between two lines. Most results are found in vector form, and then also written in Cartesian form, which often gives a clearer picture. Class XI mein aapne 2D analytical geometry aur 3D geometry ka introduction sirf Cartesian method se padha tha. Chapter 10 mein aapne vectors padhe. Is chapter mein hum 3D geometry ke liye vector algebra use karenge, kyunki isse padhai simple aur sundar ho jaati hai. Hum line ke direction cosines aur direction ratios, space mein line ka equation, do lines ke beech ka angle aur do lines ke beech ki shortest distance padhenge. Zyada tar results vector form mein nikalte hain, phir Cartesian form mein bhi likhe jaate hain, jo aksar zyada clear picture deta hai.

Everything in this chapter is built on three vector tools from Chapter 10: the dot product \vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} (for angles and perpendicularity), the cross product \vec{a} \times \vec{b} (a vector perpendicular to both) and the magnitude |\vec{a}| (length). If these feel shaky, revise them first — the chapter becomes easy.इस अध्याय की हर बात अध्याय 10 के तीन सदिश औज़ारों पर टिकी है: अदिश गुणनफल \vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} (कोण और लंबता के लिए), सदिश गुणनफल \vec{a} \times \vec{b} (दोनों पर लंब एक सदिश) और परिमाण |\vec{a}| (लंबाई)। Is chapter ki har baat Chapter 10 ke teen vector tools par tiki hai: dot product \vec{a} \cdot \vec{b} (angle aur perpendicular ke liye), cross product \vec{a} \times \vec{b} (dono par perpendicular ek vector) aur magnitude |\vec{a}| (length). Agar ye kamzor lagein to pehle inhe revise kar lijiye — chapter aasaan ho jaayega.

11.2Direction Cosines and Direction Ratios of a Lineरेखा की दिक्-कोसाइन और दिक्-अनुपातLine ke Direction Cosines aur Direction Ratios

🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeHow do you tell a friend which way a road goes? You say \"it goes north-east\". In 3D we do the same with angles: we say how much the line leans towards the x-axis, the y-axis and the z-axis. The three angles are \alpha, \beta, \gamma, and their cosines are the direction cosines. Think of them as the line's \"address of direction\". Kisi dost ko aap kaise batate hain ki road kis taraf jaati hai? Aap kehte hain \"north-east ki taraf\". 3D mein hum yahi kaam angles se karte hain: hum batate hain ki line x-axis, y-axis aur z-axis ki taraf kitna jhuki hai. Ye teen angles \alpha, \beta, \gamma hain, aur inke cosines direction cosines kehlaate hain. Inhe line ka \"direction ka address\" samajhiye.
📘 Definition (NCERT)📘 परिभाषा (NCERT)📘 Definition (NCERT)Direction cosinesIf a directed line L passing through the origin makes angles \alpha, \beta and \gamma with the x, y and z-axes respectively (called direction angles), then \cos\alpha, \cos\beta and \cos\gamma are called the direction cosines of the directed line L. They are denoted by l, m, n: \;l = \cos\alpha,\ m = \cos\beta,\ n = \cos\gamma. Direction cosinesAgar origin se jaane wali ek directed line L, x, y aur z-axes ke saath kramashah angles \alpha, \beta aur \gamma banati hai (inhe direction angles kehte hain), to \cos\alpha, \cos\beta aur \cos\gamma ko directed line L ke direction cosines kehte hain. Inhe l, m, n se likhte hain: \;l = \cos\alpha, m = \cos\beta, n = \cos\gamma.
Direction angles and direction cosines of a lineरेखा के दिक्-कोण और दिक्-कोसाइनLine ke direction angles aur direction cosinesNCERT Fig 11.1 · 11 tappable parts · 3DOpen

If we reverse the direction of L, the direction angles become their supplements \pi - \alpha, \pi - \beta, \pi - \gamma, so the signs of the direction cosines are reversed. A line in space can be extended in two opposite directions, so it has two sets of direction cosines. To get a unique set l, m, n, we must take the line as a directed line. Agar hum L ki direction ulat dein, to direction angles apne supplements \pi - \alpha, \pi - \beta, \pi - \gamma ban jaate hain, isliye direction cosines ke sign ulat jaate hain. Space mein kisi line ko do opposite directions mein badhaya ja sakta hai, isliye uske direction cosines ke do sets hote hain. Unique set l, m, n paane ke liye line ko directed line maanna hota hai.

Remark — line not through the originIf the given line does not pass through the origin, draw a line through the origin parallel to it and find the direction cosines of that line, because two parallel lines have the same set of direction cosines. Remark — origin se na jaane wali lineAgar di gayi line origin se nahi jaati, to origin se uske parallel ek line kheenchiye aur uske direction cosines nikaliye, kyunki do parallel lines ke direction cosines same hote hain.
📘 Definition (NCERT)📘 परिभाषा (NCERT)📘 Definition (NCERT)Direction ratiosAny three numbers which are proportional to the direction cosines of a line are called the direction ratios of the line. If l, m, n are direction cosines and a, b, c are direction ratios, then a = \lambda l, b = \lambda m, c = \lambda n for any non-zero \lambda \in \mathbb{R}. (Some authors call direction ratios direction numbers.) यदि l, m, n दिक्-कोसाइन और a, b, c दिक्-अनुपात हैं, तो किसी शून्येतर \lambda \in \mathbb{R} के लिए a = \lambda l, b = \lambda m, c = \lambda n। Direction ratiosKisi line ke direction cosines ke proportional koi bhi teen numbers us line ke direction ratios kehlaate hain. Agar l, m, n direction cosines aur a, b, c direction ratios hain, to kisi non-zero \lambda \in \mathbb{R} ke liye a = \lambda l, b = \lambda m, c = \lambda n. (Kuch authors direction ratios ko direction numbers bhi kehte hain.)

From direction ratios to direction cosines. Let a, b, c be direction ratios and l, m, n the direction cosines of a line. Then \dfrac{l}{a} = \dfrac{m}{b} = \dfrac{n}{c} = k (say), so l = ak,\ m = bk,\ n = ck. Since l^2 + m^2 + n^2 = 1, we get k^2(a^2 + b^2 + c^2) = 1, i.e. k = \pm \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2 + c^2}}. तब \dfrac{l}{a} = \dfrac{m}{b} = \dfrac{n}{c} = k (मान लीजिए), अतः l = ak,\ m = bk,\ n = ck। क्योंकि l^2 + m^2 + n^2 = 1, इसलिए k^2(a^2 + b^2 + c^2) = 1, अर्थात् k = \pm \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2 + c^2}}।Direction ratios se direction cosines tak. Maan lijiye a, b, c kisi line ke direction ratios aur l, m, n uske direction cosines hain. Tab \dfrac{l}{a} = \dfrac{m}{b} = \dfrac{n}{c} = k (maan lijiye), to l = ak,\ m = bk,\ n = ck. Kyunki l^2 + m^2 + n^2 = 1, isliye k^2(a^2 + b^2 + c^2) = 1, yaani k = \pm \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{a^2 + b^2 + c^2}}.

l = \pm\frac{a}{\sqrt{a^2+b^2+c^2}},\quad m = \pm\frac{b}{\sqrt{a^2+b^2+c^2}},\quad n = \pm\frac{c}{\sqrt{a^2+b^2+c^2}}
Direction cosines from direction ratios (same sign for all three)दिक्-अनुपात से दिक्-कोसाइन (तीनों के लिए एक ही चिह्न)Direction ratios se direction cosines (teeno ke liye same sign)
Two facts to remember: (1) l^2 + m^2 + n^2 = 1 always (it comes from Chapter 10: the unit vector along the line is l\hat{i} + m\hat{j} + n\hat{k}, and its length is 1). Direction ratios do not need to satisfy this. (2) If a, b, c are direction ratios, then ka, kb, kc (k \ne 0) are also direction ratios. So a line has infinitely many sets of direction ratios, and any two sets are proportional. Yaad rakhne ke do facts: (1) hamesha l^2 + m^2 + n^2 = 1 (ye Chapter 10 se aata hai: line ke along unit vector l\hat{i} + m\hat{j} + n\hat{k} hai aur uski length 1 hai). Direction ratios ke liye ye zaroori nahi hai. (2) Agar a, b, c direction ratios hain, to ka, kb, kc (k \ne 0) bhi direction ratios hain. Isliye ek line ke direction ratios ke infinite sets hote hain, aur koi bhi do sets proportional hote hain.

11.2.1Direction cosines of a line passing through two pointsदो बिंदुओं से होकर जाने वाली रेखा की दिक्-कोसाइनDo points se jaane wali line ke direction cosines

Only one line passes through two given points, so we can find the direction cosines of the line through P(x_1, y_1, z_1) and Q(x_2, y_2, z_2). Let the line PQ make angles \alpha, \beta, \gamma with the x, y and z-axes. Draw perpendiculars from P and Q to the XY-plane meeting it at R and S, and a perpendicular from P to QS meeting it at N. In the right-angled triangle PNQ, \angle PQN = \gamma, so \cos\gamma = \dfrac{NQ}{PQ} = \dfrac{z_2 - z_1}{PQ}. In the same way \cos\alpha = \dfrac{x_2 - x_1}{PQ} and \cos\beta = \dfrac{y_2 - y_1}{PQ}. Right-angled triangle PNQ mein \angle PQN = \gamma, isliye \cos\gamma = \dfrac{NQ}{PQ} = \dfrac{z_2 - z_1}{PQ}. Isi tarah \cos\alpha = \dfrac{x_2 - x_1}{PQ} aur \cos\beta = \dfrac{y_2 - y_1}{PQ}.

🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeImagine an ant starting at a point A and walking in a fixed direction \vec{b}. After \"time\" \lambda it is at A + \lambda\vec{b}. As \lambda takes every real value (positive = forward, negative = backward, 0 = at A), the ant traces the whole line. That single idea is the equation of a line: one point + one direction. Imagine kijiye ki ek cheenti point A se chal kar ek fixed direction \vec{b} mein chalti hai. \"Time\" \lambda ke baad wo A + \lambda\vec{b} par hoti hai. Jab \lambda har real value leta hai (positive = aage, negative = peeche, 0 = A par), to cheenti poori line bana deti hai. Yahi ek idea line ka equation hai: ek point + ek direction.

A line is uniquely determined if (i) it passes through a given point and has a given direction, or (ii) it passes through two given points. Ek line unique roop se tay hoti hai agar (i) wo ek diye gaye point se jaati hai aur uski direction di gayi hai, ya (ii) wo do diye gaye points se jaati hai.

11.3.1Equation of a line through a given point and parallel to given vectorदिए गए बिंदु से जाने वाली और दिए गए सदिश के समांतर रेखा का समीकरणDiye gaye point se jaane wali aur diye gaye vector ke parallel line ka equation

Let \vec{a} be the position vector of the given point A with respect to the origin O. Let the line l pass through A and be parallel to the vector \vec{b}. Let \vec{r} be the position vector of any point P on the line. Then \overrightarrow{AP} is parallel to \vec{b}, i.e. \overrightarrow{AP} = \lambda\vec{b} for some real number \lambda. But \overrightarrow{AP} = \overrightarrow{OP} - \overrightarrow{OA} = \vec{r} - \vec{a}. So \lambda\vec{b} = \vec{r} - \vec{a}. Conversely, for each value of the parameter \lambda this gives the position vector of a point P on the line. परंतु \overrightarrow{AP} = \overrightarrow{OP} - \overrightarrow{OA} = \vec{r} - \vec{a}। अतः \lambda\vec{b} = \vec{r} - \vec{a}। Maan lijiye origin O ke respect mein diye gaye point A ka position vector \vec{a} hai. Line l, A se jaati hai aur vector \vec{b} ke parallel hai. Maan lijiye line par kisi bhi point P ka position vector \vec{r} hai. Tab \overrightarrow{AP}, \vec{b} ke parallel hai, yaani kisi real number \lambda ke liye \overrightarrow{AP} = \lambda\vec{b}. Lekin \overrightarrow{AP} = \overrightarrow{OP} - \overrightarrow{OA} = \vec{r} - \vec{a}. Isliye \lambda\vec{b} = \vec{r} - \vec{a}. Ulta bhi sahi hai: parameter \lambda ki har value ke liye ye line par kisi point P ka position vector deta hai.

Also, a 0 in a denominator (like \dfrac{y}{0} in the equation of the x-axis \dfrac{x}{1} = \dfrac{y}{0} = \dfrac{z}{0}) is only a way of writing: it means that the numerator is 0, i.e. y = 0 and z = 0 on the whole line. पुस्तक का सारांश स्थिति सदिश \vec{a} और \vec{b} वाले दो बिंदुओं से जाने वाली रेखा भी देता है: \vec{r} = \vec{a} + \lambda(\vec{b} - \vec{a}) — यह बस \"बिंदु \vec{a} + दिशा \vec{b} - \vec{a}\" है। Topper box — do points se jaane wali line. Cartesian form mein: \dfrac{x - x_1}{x_2 - x_1} = \dfrac{y - y_1}{y_2 - y_1} = \dfrac{z - z_1}{z_2 - z_1}. Saath hi, denominator mein 0 (jaise x-axis ke equation \dfrac{x}{1} = \dfrac{y}{0} = \dfrac{z}{0} mein \dfrac{y}{0}) sirf likhne ka tareeka hai: iska matlab hai numerator 0 hai, yaani poori line par y = 0 aur z = 0.

Do Lines ke beech ka Angle

🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeTwo pencils held from the same point make an angle. Two lines in space may not even touch — but we can still slide one of them (keeping its direction) until they meet, and then measure the angle. So the angle between two lines depends only on their directions, i.e. on their direction ratios \vec{b_1} and \vec{b_2} — and the dot product of Chapter 10 gives it at once. Ek hi point se pakdi gayi do pencils ek angle banati hain. Space mein do lines shayad ek-doosre ko chhuein bhi nahi — phir bhi hum ek ko (uski direction same rakhte hue) khiska kar doosri se mila sakte hain aur angle naap sakte hain. Isliye do lines ke beech ka angle sirf unki directions par, yaani unke direction ratios \vec{b_1} aur \vec{b_2} par depend karta hai — aur Chapter 10 ka dot product ise turant de deta hai.

Let L_1 and L_2 be two lines through the origin with direction ratios a_1, b_1, c_1 and a_2, b_2, c_2. Let P be a point on L_1 and Q a point on L_2, and let \theta be the acute angle between OP and OQ. The directed segments OP and OQ are vectors with components a_1, b_1, c_1 and a_2, b_2, c_2, so the angle between them is given by the dot product formula. If the lines do not pass through the origin, take lines L_1' and L_2' through the origin parallel to L_1 and L_2. Maan lijiye L_1 aur L_2 origin se jaane wali do lines hain jinke direction ratios a_1, b_1, c_1 aur a_2, b_2, c_2 hain. Directed segments OP aur OQ aise vectors hain jinke components a_1, b_1, c_1 aur a_2, b_2, c_2 hain, isliye unke beech ka angle dot product formula se milta hai. 🌱 Start here🌱 यहाँ से शुरू कीजिए🌱 Yahan se shuru kijiyeOn a flat page, two lines either cross or are parallel. In a room there is a third kind: think of a line drawn across the ceiling and another line going down a wall. They point different ways and never meet — like a flyover crossing above a road. Such lines are called skew lines. The shortest distance between them is the length of the one special segment that is perpendicular to both — like the vertical pillar from the road straight up to the flyover. Flat page par do lines ya to cross karti hain ya parallel hoti hain. Inke beech ki shortest distance us ek khaas segment ki length hai jo dono par perpendicular ho — jaise road se seedha upar flyover tak ka khamba.

If two lines in space intersect, the shortest distance between them is zero. If two lines are parallel, the shortest distance is the perpendicular distance, i.e. the length of the perpendicular drawn from a point on one line onto the other. In space there are also lines which are neither intersecting nor parallel; such a pair is non coplanar and the lines are called skew lines. Agar space mein do lines intersect karti hain, to unke beech ki shortest distance zero hai. (4) In NCERT's room, the skew lines GE and DB have direction vectors \hat{i} + 3\hat{j} and 3\hat{j} - 2\hat{k}; the formula gives their shortest distance as \dfrac{6}{7} unit — try it in the calculator below. (3) \vec{r} = (1 - t)\hat{i} + (t - 2)\hat{j} + (3 - 2t)\hat{k} जैसे समीकरण को पहले \vec{a} + t\vec{b} में तोड़िए: यहाँ \vec{a} = \hat{i} - 2\hat{j} + 3\hat{k} और \vec{b} = -\hat{i} + \hat{j} - 2\hat{k}। Topper box. (3) \vec{r} = (1 - t)\hat{i} + (t - 2)\hat{j} + (3 - 2t)\hat{k} jaise equation ko pehle \vec{a} + t\vec{b} mein todiye: yahan \vec{a} = \hat{i} - 2\hat{j} + 3\hat{k} aur \vec{b} = -\hat{i} + \hat{j} - 2\hat{k}. (4) NCERT ke kamre mein skew lines GE aur DB ke direction vectors \hat{i} + 3\hat{j} aur 3\hat{j} - 2\hat{k} hain; formula unki shortest distance \dfrac{6}{7} unit deta hai — neeche ke calculator mein dekhiye.

Perpendicular ⇔ a_1a_2 + b_1b_2 + c_1c_2 = 0; parallel ⇔ direction ratios proportional. Lines ke beech angle: sirf direction vectors ka dot product, absolute value ke saath. Perpendicular ⇔ a_1a_2 + b_1b_2 + c_1c_2 = 0; parallel ⇔ direction ratios proportional.
Skew lines: not parallel, not intersecting, not in one plane. Shortest distance = projection of \vec{a_2} - \vec{a_1} on \vec{b_1}\times\vec{b_2}. For parallel lines use \dfrac{|\vec{b}\times(\vec{a_2}-\vec{a_1})|}{|\vec{b}|}. d = 0 means the lines intersect. Skew lines: na parallel, na intersecting, ek plane mein nahi. Shortest distance = \vec{a_2} - \vec{a_1} ka \vec{b_1}\times\vec{b_2} par projection. Parallel lines ke liye \dfrac{|\vec{b}\times(\vec{a_2}-\vec{a_1})|}{|\vec{b}|} lagaiye. d = 0 ka matlab lines intersect karti hain.
