Microbes – dost bhi, dushman bhi
Microbes are everywhere — in soil, water, air, inside our bodies and in other animals and plants. They are found even in places where nothing else can live: deep inside geysers (temperatures up to 100 °C), deep in the soil, under layers of snow and in highly acidic places. Microbes include bacteria, fungi, protozoa, microscopic algae, viruses, viroids and prions (prions are proteinaceous infectious agents). Microbes har jagah hain — mitti, paani, hawa, hamare body ke andar aur doosre jeevon mein. Ye wahan bhi milte hain jahan koi aur nahi reh sakta: geysers ke andar (100 °C tak), gehri mitti mein, barf ke neeche aur bahut acidic jagah. Microbes mein bacteria, fungi, protozoa, microscopic algae, viruses, viroids aur prions aate hain.Microbes are tiny living things. They live everywhere, even in very hot, very cold and very acidic places.
Some microbes cause diseases (you read about them in Chapter 7), but many are useful to us. Bacteria and fungi can also be grown on nutritive media in the lab, where they form colonies that we can see with the naked eye. This chapter is about the good side of microbes. Kuch microbes bimari phailate hain (Chapter 7), lekin bahut saare hamare kaam ke hain. Bacteria aur fungi ko lab mein nutritive medium par ugaya ja sakta hai, jahan wo colonies banate hain jo aankh se dikhti hain. Ye chapter microbes ki achhi side ke baare mein hai. Some microbes make us sick, but many help us. This chapter shows how they help.

Useful products from microbes11 tappable partsOpenCurd: Lactobacillus and other lactic acid bacteria (LAB) grow in milk and change it into curd. They make lactic acid, which coagulates and partly digests the milk proteins. We add a little curd to fresh milk — this small amount is the inoculum or starter, and it holds millions of LAB. At a suitable temperature they multiply and turn the milk into curd. LAB also raise the amount of vitamin B₁₂ and, in our stomach, they keep disease-causing microbes in check. Dahi: Lactobacillus aur doosre LAB doodh mein badh kar use dahi bana dete hain. Ye lactic acid banate hain jo doodh ke proteins ko jama deta hai aur thoda digest bhi karta hai. Doodh mein jo thoda dahi (jaman) daalte hain wahi inoculum hai — usme lakhon LAB hote hain. Sahi temperature par ye badh kar doodh ko dahi bana dete hain. LAB vitamin B₁₂ bhi badhate hain aur pet mein bimari wale microbes ko control karte hain.Lactobacillus bacteria turn milk into curd by making lactic acid. A spoon of old curd starts the process. Curd also gives vitamin B₁₂.
Dough (idli, dosa, bread): the dough for dosa and idli is fermented by bacteria; its puffed-up look comes from the CO₂ gas they give off. Dough for bread is fermented using baker's yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Dough (idli, dosa, bread): dosa aur idli ka ghol bacteria ferment karte hain; wo jo phoola hua look hai wo CO₂ gas ki wajah se hai. Bread ka aata baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae se ferment hota hai.Bacteria ferment idli-dosa batter and yeast ferments bread dough. The CO₂ gas makes them soft and puffy.
Toddy: a traditional drink of some parts of southern India, made by fermenting the sap from palms. Microbes are also used to ferment fish, soyabean and bamboo-shoots to make foods. Toddy: South India ke kuch hisson ka traditional drink, jo palm (taad) ke ras ko ferment karke banta hai. Fish, soyabean aur bamboo-shoots ko ferment karke khana banane mein bhi microbes use hote hain.Toddy is made by fermenting palm sap.
Cheese: microbes give each cheese its own texture, flavour and taste. The large holes in Swiss cheese come from a lot of CO₂ made by the bacterium Propionibacterium sharmanii. Roquefort cheese is ripened by growing a specific fungus on it, which gives a special flavour. See all household uses together in the chart. Cheese: har cheese ka texture, flavour aur taste microbes se aata hai. Swiss cheese ke bade holes bacterium Propionibacterium sharmanii ke banaye zyada CO₂ se hote hain. Roquefort cheese par ek khaas fungus uga kar use pakaya (ripen) jata hai — isse special flavour aata hai. Saare ghar ke uses chart mein dekho.Swiss cheese has big holes because a bacterium makes lots of CO₂. Roquefort cheese gets its taste from a fungus.
Industry products mein microbes
In industry, microbes are used to make beverages, antibiotics and many other useful products. For this they are grown in very large vessels called fermentors NCERT Fig 8.4. See the industrial products chart. Industry mein microbes se drinks, antibiotics aur bahut se useful products banaye jaate hain. Iske liye unhe bahut bade vessels — fermentors — mein grow kiya jata hai NCERT Fig 8.4. Industrial products chart dekho.Factories grow microbes in huge tanks called fermentors to make useful things.
8.2.1Fermented Beveragesकिण्वित पेयFermented drinks
Since ancient times microbes, especially yeasts, have been used to make wine, beer, whisky, brandy and rum. The same yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae — here called brewer's yeast — ferments malted cereals and fruit juices to produce ethanol. Depending on the raw material and processing, different drinks are made: wine and beer are produced without distillation, while whisky, brandy and rum are made by distilling the fermented broth NCERT Fig 8.5. Purane zamane se microbes, khaas kar yeast, se wine, beer, whisky, brandy aur rum banti aayi hai. Wahi yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae — yahan isko brewer's yeast kehte hain — malted cereals aur fruit juices ko ferment karke ethanol banata hai. Raw material aur process ke hisaab se alag drinks bante hain: wine aur beer bina distillation, jabki whisky, brandy aur rum distillation se NCERT Fig 8.5.Yeast turns sugars from grains and fruit juice into alcohol (ethanol). Wine and beer are not distilled; whisky, brandy and rum are distilled.
Antibiotics
Antibiotics are chemical substances produced by some microbes that can kill or slow down the growth of other, disease-causing microbes. "Anti" means against and "bio" means life — here, against disease-causing organisms. They are among the most important discoveries of the twentieth century. Antibiotics kuch microbes ke banaye chemicals hain jo doosre, bimari wale microbes ko maar dete hain ya unki growth slow kar dete hain. "Anti" = against, "bio" = life — yahan bimari wale organisms ke against. Antibiotics are medicines made by microbes that kill or stop germs.
Penicillin was the first antibiotic, found by chance. Alexander Fleming, while working on Staphylococci bacteria, saw that a mould growing in one of his unwashed culture plates stopped the bacteria around it from growing. The chemical came from the mould Penicillium notatum, so he named it penicillin. Its full value as a medicine was shown later by Ernest Chain and Howard Florey. Penicillin was widely used to treat soldiers wounded in World War II, and Fleming, Chain and Florey got the Nobel Prize in 1945. Penicillin pehla antibiotic tha, jo achanak (by chance) mila. Alexander Fleming Staphylococci bacteria par kaam kar rahe the; unhone dekha ki ek bina dhuli culture plate mein jo mould uga tha, uske aas-paas bacteria badh hi nahi rahe the. Ye chemical mould Penicillium notatum se aaya, isliye naam rakha penicillin. Dawai ke roop mein iski poori power baad mein Ernest Chain aur Howard Florey ne dikhayi. World War II mein ghayal soldiers ke ilaaj mein ye bahut use hui, aur teeno ko 1945 mein Nobel Prize mila.Fleming found penicillin from the mould Penicillium notatum. Chain and Florey showed it works as a medicine. All three got the Nobel Prize in 1945.
Antibiotics have greatly improved our ability to treat deadly diseases such as plague, whooping cough (kali khansi), diphtheria (gal ghotu) and leprosy (kusht rog), which used to kill millions of people all over the world. Antibiotics ki wajah se plague, kali khansi (whooping cough), gal ghotu (diphtheria) aur kusht rog (leprosy) jaisi jaanleva bimariyon ka ilaaj ho paaya, jo pehle duniya bhar mein lakhon logon ki jaan leti thin.Antibiotics now cure diseases like plague, whooping cough, diphtheria and leprosy.
8.2.3Chemicals, Enzymes and other Bioactive Moleculesरसायन, एंजाइम एवं अन्य जैव-सक्रिय अणुChemicals, enzymes aur bioactive molecules
Microbes are used to make industrial chemicals such as organic acids, alcohols and enzymes. Examples of acid producers: Aspergillus niger (a fungus) → citric acid; Acetobacter aceti (a bacterium) → acetic acid; Clostridium butylicum (a bacterium) → butyric acid; Lactobacillus (a bacterium) → lactic acid. Yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is used for commercial production of ethanol. Microbes se industrial chemicals jaise organic acids, alcohols aur enzymes bante hain. Acid banane wale: Aspergillus niger (fungus) → citric acid; Acetobacter aceti (bacterium) → acetic acid; Clostridium butylicum (bacterium) → butyric acid; Lactobacillus (bacterium) → lactic acid. Different microbes make different acids: citric, acetic, butyric and lactic. Yeast makes ethanol.
Useful enzymes from microbes: lipases are added to detergent powders to remove oily stains from clothes; pectinases and proteases are used to make bottled fruit juices clear (juice made at home looks cloudier than bottled juice). Microbes se useful enzymes: lipases detergent mein daale jaate hain taaki kapdon ke oily daag hatein; pectinases aur proteases bottle wale fruit juice ko clear banate hain (ghar ka juice bottle wale se zyada dhundhla dikhta hai).Lipase in detergents removes oil stains. Pectinase and protease make fruit juice clear.
Streptokinase is made by the bacterium Streptococcus and modified by genetic engineering. It is used as a "clot buster" to remove clots from the blood vessels of patients who have had a myocardial infarction (heart attack). Streptokinase bacterium Streptococcus banata hai aur genetic engineering se isko modify kiya jata hai. Ye "clot buster" hai — heart attack (myocardial infarction) ke patients ki blood vessels se clot (thakka) hatata hai.Streptokinase from Streptococcus dissolves blood clots in heart-attack patients.
Cyclosporin A is an immunosuppressive agent given to organ-transplant patients; it is produced by the fungus Trichoderma polysporum. Statins, produced by the yeast Monascus purpureus, are sold as blood-cholesterol lowering agents: they competitively inhibit the enzyme that makes cholesterol. Cyclosporin A ek immunosuppressive agent hai (immunity ko dabata hai) jo organ-transplant patients ko diya jata hai; ye fungus Trichoderma polysporum banata hai. Statins, yeast Monascus purpureus se bante hain aur blood cholesterol kam karne ki dawai hain — ye cholesterol banane wale enzyme ko competitively rok dete hain.Cyclosporin A (from Trichoderma) stops the body rejecting a new organ. Statins (from Monascus yeast) lower cholesterol.
Sewage treatment mein microbes
Every day cities and towns produce huge amounts of waste-water, mostly human excreta. This municipal waste-water is called sewage. It is full of organic matter and microbes, many of them pathogenic, so it cannot be put directly into rivers and streams. It is first treated in sewage treatment plants (STPs) to make it less polluting. Treatment is done in two stages: primary and secondary NCERT Fig 8.6. Shehron mein roz bahut saara ganda paani banta hai, zyada tar human excreta. Is municipal waste-water ko sewage kehte hain. Isme organic matter aur microbes (kai bimari wale) bhare hote hain, isliye ise seedha nadiyon mein nahi chhod sakte. Pehle sewage treatment plant (STP) mein saaf karte hain. Treatment do stages mein hota hai: primary aur secondary NCERT Fig 8.6.Dirty city water (sewage) must be cleaned in a sewage treatment plant before it goes into rivers. Cleaning has two stages.
Sewage treatment plantNCERT Fig 8.6 · 16 tappable parts · 4 stepsOpenPrimary treatment is physical: large and small particles are removed by filtration and sedimentation. First, floating debris is removed by passing the sewage through screens one after another (sequential filtration). Then grit (soil and small pebbles) settles down. All the solids that settle form the primary sludge, and the liquid on top (the supernatant) is the primary effluent, which goes on to secondary treatment. Primary treatment physical hota hai: chhote-bade particles filtration aur sedimentation se hataaye jaate hain. Pehle tairta kachra screens se ek ke baad ek chhaan kar hataya jata hai. Phir grit (mitti, chhote kankad) neeche baith jaata hai. Neeche baithe saare solids = primary sludge, aur upar ka paani = primary effluent, jo secondary treatment mein jaata hai.Primary treatment removes solid bits by filtering and letting them settle. The settled solids are primary sludge; the water on top is primary effluent.
Secondary (biological) treatment: the primary effluent goes into large aeration tanks. It is stirred all the time and air is pumped in, so useful aerobic microbes grow fast into flocs — masses of bacteria tied together by fungal filaments into a mesh. While growing, these microbes consume most of the organic matter, and this greatly lowers the BOD of the effluent. Secondary (biological) treatment: primary effluent bade aeration tanks mein jaata hai. Ise lagatar hilaya jata hai aur air pump ki jaati hai, jisse useful aerobic microbes tezi se badh kar flocs banate hain — bacteria ke gucchhe jo fungal threads se jaal ki tarah jude hote hain. Ye microbes zyada tar organic matter kha jaate hain, isse effluent ka BOD bahut kam ho jaata hai.In the aeration tank, air is pumped in. Bacteria grow as flocs and eat the dirt (organic matter), so BOD goes down.
What is BOD? BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) is the amount of oxygen that would be used up if all the organic matter in one litre of water were oxidised by bacteria. The sewage water is treated till the BOD is reduced. The BOD test measures how fast microbes take up oxygen, so it indirectly tells how much organic matter is in the water. The greater the BOD, the more polluting the waste-water.BOD क्या है? BOD kya hai? BOD (biochemical oxygen demand) wo oxygen hai jo ek litre paani ka saara organic matter bacteria dwara oxidise karne mein lagegi. BOD test batata hai ki microbes kitni tezi se oxygen le rahe hain — matlab indirectly paani mein kitna organic matter hai. BOD jitna zyada, paani utna zyada polluted.BOD tells how much organic dirt is in water. High BOD means very dirty water.
When the BOD has fallen enough, the effluent goes into a settling tank, where the bacterial flocs settle. This sediment is the activated sludge. A small part of it is pumped back into the aeration tank to serve as the inoculum. The major part goes into large tanks called anaerobic sludge digesters, where other bacteria that grow without oxygen digest the bacteria and fungi in the sludge. During this digestion they produce a mixture of gases — methane, hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide — which forms biogas and can be used as a source of energy because it is inflammable.BOD Jab BOD kaafi kam ho jaaye, effluent settling tank mein jaata hai, jahan bacterial flocs neeche baith jaate hain. Is sediment ko activated sludge kehte hain. Iska thoda hissa wapas aeration tank mein pump kiya jata hai — wo inoculum ka kaam karta hai. Zyada hissa bade anaerobic sludge digesters mein jaata hai, jahan bina oxygen wale doosre bacteria sludge ke bacteria aur fungi ko digest karte hain. Is dauran methane, hydrogen sulphide aur CO₂ ka mixture banta hai — yahi biogas hai, jo jalne wali gas hai, isliye energy source hai.Flocs settle as activated sludge. A little goes back to the aeration tank. The rest is digested by bacteria that need no oxygen, and they give biogas.
Finally, the effluent from the secondary treatment plant — the secondary effluent — is generally released into natural water bodies like rivers and streams NCERT Fig 8.7. Aakhir mein secondary treatment ka paani — secondary effluent — aam taur par nadiyon aur naalon mein chhod diya jata hai NCERT Fig 8.7.The cleaned water (secondary effluent) is released into rivers.
Microbes have been used to treat sewage for more than a century, and no man-made technology has been able to replace this microbial treatment. But the amount of sewage keeps growing and there are not enough STPs to treat it. So the Ministry of Environment and Forests started the Ganga Action Plan and the Yamuna Action Plan to save these major rivers from pollution; under them, many STPs are being built so that only treated sewage is released into the rivers. Lekin sewage badhta ja raha hai aur STPs kam hain. Isliye Ministry of Environment and Forests ne Ganga Action Plan aur Yamuna Action Plan shuru kiye taaki in badi nadiyon ko pollution se bachaya ja sake; inke under bahut se STPs ban rahe hain taaki nadiyon mein sirf treated sewage hi jaaye.India started the Ganga and Yamuna Action Plans to build more sewage treatment plants and keep these rivers clean.
8.4Microbes in Production of Biogasबायोगैस उत्पादन में सूक्ष्मजीवBiogas banane mein microbes
Biogas is a mixture of gases, mainly methane, produced by microbial activity; it is used as a fuel. The gas a microbe produces depends on the microbe and the material it uses. In dough, cheese and drinks the main gas was CO₂. But some bacteria that grow anaerobically on cellulose produce a large amount of methane along with CO₂ and H₂. These bacteria are called methanogens; a common one is Methanobacterium. Kaunsi gas banegi ye microbe aur material par depend karta hai. Dough, cheese, drinks mein main gas CO₂ thi. Lekin kuch bacteria cellulose par bina oxygen badh kar CO₂ aur H₂ ke saath bahut saari methane banate hain. Inhe methanogens kehte hain; common example Methanobacterium.Methanogens are bacteria that live without oxygen on cellulose and make methane gas — biogas.
Methanogens are found in the anaerobic sludge of sewage treatment and in the rumen (a part of the stomach) of cattle. Cattle food is full of cellulose; in the rumen these bacteria break down the cellulose and help the cattle's nutrition (we humans cannot digest the cellulose in our food). So cattle dung — gobar — is rich in methanogens, and it is used to make biogas, commonly called gobar gas. Methanogens sewage treatment ke anaerobic sludge mein aur gaay-bhains ke rumen (pet ka ek hissa) mein milte hain. Pashuon ke khane mein bahut cellulose hota hai; rumen mein ye bacteria cellulose tod kar unke nutrition mein help karte hain (hum insaan cellulose digest nahi kar paate). Isliye gobar methanogens se bhara hota hai, aur usse bani biogas ko gobar gas kehte hain.Methanogens live in cattle rumen, so cow dung (gobar) is full of them. Biogas from dung is called gobar gas.

A floating cover — the gas holder — sits over the slurry and keeps rising as gas is produced by the microbes. An outlet pipe supplies the biogas to nearby houses, and the spent slurry is drained through another outlet and used as fertiliser. Cattle dung is plentiful in rural areas, so biogas plants are common there; the gas is used for cooking and lighting. The technology was developed in India mainly by the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). Biogas plant NCERT Fig 8.8: ek concrete tank (10–15 feet gehra) jisme bio-waste jama hota hai aur gobar ka ghol daala jata hai. Biocontrol agents ke roop mein microbes
Biocontrol means using biological methods to control plant diseases and pests. Today we depend heavily on chemical insecticides and pesticides; these are toxic and very harmful to people and animals, and they pollute our environment (soil, groundwater), fruits, vegetables and crops. Weedicides used to remove weeds also pollute the soil. Biocontrol matlab plant diseases aur pests ko biological tareekon se control karna. Aaj hum chemical insecticides aur pesticides par bahut depend karte hain; ye zehreele hain, insaanon aur jaanwaron ke liye bahut nuksaandeh hain, aur mitti, groundwater, phal, sabziyan sab pollute karte hain. Weedicides bhi mitti ko pollute karte hain.Chemical pesticides are poisonous and pollute soil, water and food. Biocontrol uses living things instead.
Biological control of pests: the organic farmer believes that biodiversity furthers health — the more variety a landscape has, the more sustainable it is. The farmer does not try to wipe out the "pests" completely; they are kept at manageable levels by a balanced system of predators and prey, because eradicating them would also kill useful insects that depend on them. Knowing the life cycles, feeding patterns and habitats of predators and pests helps choose the right biocontrol. Pests ka biological control: organic farmer maanta hai ki biodiversity se health badhti hai — jitni variety, utna sustainable. Farmer "pests" ko poora khatam nahi karta; predators aur prey ka balance unhe control mein rakhta hai, kyunki poora mita diya to un par depend karne wale useful insects bhi mar jaayenge. Predators aur pests ki life cycle, khana aur habitat samajhna sahi biocontrol chunne mein help karta hai.Organic farmers keep pests low with natural enemies instead of killing every insect.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a microbial biocontrol agent for butterfly caterpillars. Its dried spores come in sachets; they are mixed with water and sprayed on vulnerable plants such as brassicas and fruit trees. The insect larvae eat them, the toxin is released in the larva's gut and the larva is killed. The bacterial disease kills the caterpillars but leaves other insects unharmed. Scientists have also put B. thuringiensis toxin genes into plants, which then resist insect pests — Bt cotton is one example, grown in some states of our country (more in Chapter 10). Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) butterfly caterpillars (illi) ka microbial biocontrol agent hai. Iske dried spores sachets mein milte hain; paani mein mila kar brassicas aur fruit trees par spray karte hain. Caterpillar inhe khaata hai, uski gut mein toxin release hota hai aur wo mar jaata hai. Ye sirf caterpillars ko maarta hai, baaki insects safe rehte hain. Scientists ne iske toxin genes plants mein bhi daal diye hain, jisse plants khud pest-resistant ban jaate hain — jaise Bt cotton, jo hamare desh ke kuch states mein ugaayi jaati hai (detail Chapter 10 mein).Bt bacteria are sprayed on plants. Caterpillars eat them and die from the toxin; other insects are safe. Bt cotton carries this toxin gene.
The fungus Trichoderma is being developed for treating plant diseases. Trichoderma species are free-living fungi very common in root ecosystems, and they are effective biocontrol agents of several plant pathogens. Fungus Trichoderma ko plant diseases ke ilaaj ke liye develop kiya ja raha hai. Trichoderma free-living fungi hain jo roots ke aas-paas bahut milti hain; ye kai plant pathogens ke effective biocontrol agents hain.Trichoderma is a soil fungus that fights many plant diseases.
Baculoviruses attack insects and other arthropods. Most baculoviruses used as biocontrol agents belong to the genus Nucleopolyhedrovirus. They are excellent for species-specific, narrow-spectrum insecticidal use: they have shown no harmful effect on plants, mammals, birds, fish or even non-target insects. This is especially useful when beneficial insects are being conserved as part of an integrated pest management (IPM) programme, or when an ecologically sensitive area is being treated. Baculoviruses insects aur doosre arthropods par attack karte hain. Biocontrol mein use hone wale zyada tar baculoviruses genus Nucleopolyhedrovirus ke hain. Ye species-specific, narrow-spectrum insecticide ke liye best hain: plants, mammals, birds, fish ya non-target insects par koi bura asar nahi dikha. Ye tab bahut kaam aata hai jab IPM (integrated pest management) mein useful insects ko bachana ho, ya ecologically sensitive area ka treatment karna ho.Baculoviruses kill only the target insect and harm nothing else, so they suit IPM and sensitive areas.
Biofertilisers ke roop mein microbes
Chemical fertilisers, used to meet the ever-growing demand for food, have added a lot to pollution. So there is pressure to move to organic farming and to use biofertilisers — organisms that enrich the nutrient quality of the soil. The main sources of biofertilisers are bacteria, fungi and cyanobacteria. Badhti food demand poori karne ke liye jo chemical fertilisers use hue, unhone pollution bahut badhaya. Isliye organic farming aur biofertilisers ki taraf jaane ki zaroorat hai — aise jeev jo mitti ke nutrients badhate hain. Biofertilisers ke main source: bacteria, fungi aur cyanobacteria.Biofertilisers are living things that make soil richer. They are bacteria, fungi and cyanobacteria.
Bacteria: Rhizobium forms nodules on the roots of leguminous plants (a symbiotic association) and fixes atmospheric nitrogen into organic forms that the plant uses as a nutrient. Other bacteria, such as Azospirillum and Azotobacter, fix atmospheric nitrogen while free-living in the soil, enriching its nitrogen content. Bacteria: Rhizobium legume (dalhan) plants ki roots par nodules banata hai (symbiosis) aur hawa ki nitrogen ko organic form mein fix karta hai jo plant use karta hai. Doosre bacteria jaise Azospirillum aur Azotobacter mitti mein free-living reh kar nitrogen fix karte hain aur mitti ki nitrogen badhate hain.Rhizobium lives in root nodules of legumes and fixes nitrogen. Azospirillum and Azotobacter fix nitrogen while living free in soil.
Fungi: fungi also form symbiotic associations with plant roots — mycorrhiza. Many members of the genus Glomus form mycorrhiza. The fungal partner absorbs phosphorus from the soil and passes it to the plant. Such plants also show resistance to root-borne pathogens, tolerance to salinity and drought, and better overall growth. Fungi: fungi bhi plant roots ke saath symbiosis banate hain — mycorrhiza. Genus Glomus ke kai members mycorrhiza banate hain. Mycorrhiza fungi (like Glomus) live on roots and give the plant phosphorus. The plant also resists disease, salt and drought.
Cyanobacteria: cyanobacteria are autotrophic microbes found widely in water and on land; many of them fix atmospheric nitrogen, e.g. Anabaena, Nostoc, Oscillatoria. In paddy fields cyanobacteria are an important biofertiliser. Blue-green algae also add organic matter to the soil and increase its fertility. Today many biofertilisers are sold in the market and farmers use them regularly to replenish soil nutrients and reduce their dependence on chemical fertilisers. Cyanobacteria: cyanobacteria paani aur zameen par milne wale autotrophic microbes hain; kai nitrogen fix karte hain, jaise Anabaena, Nostoc, Oscillatoria. Dhaan (paddy) ke kheton mein cyanobacteria important biofertiliser hain. Blue-green algae mitti mein organic matter bhi badhate hain aur fertility badhate hain. Aaj market mein bahut se biofertilisers milte hain aur farmers inhe regular use karte hain taaki chemical fertilisers par dependence kam ho.Cyanobacteria like Anabaena and Nostoc fix nitrogen in paddy fields and add organic matter to soil.
