Parts and their functions
- Inlet: dung + water slurry (अंतर्गम: गोबर + पानी का घोल) — A slurry of cattle dung (gobar) mixed with water is fed into the tank. Gobar is rich in methanogens.
- Digester (concrete tank) (संपाचित्र (कंक्रीट टैंक)) — A concrete tank about 10–15 feet deep in which the bio-wastes are collected and the dung slurry is fed.
- Dung slurry (गोबर का घोल) — Cellulose-rich cattle dung + water. Bacteria break it down anaerobically.
- Methanogens (e.g. Methanobacterium) (मेथेनोजन (जैसे मेथेनोबैक्टीरियम)) — Bacteria that grow anaerobically on cellulosic material and produce large amounts of methane along with CO₂ and H₂. Also found in anaerobic sludge and in the rumen of cattle.
- Floating cover (gas holder) (तैरता ढक्कन (गैस-धारक)) — Placed over the slurry; it keeps rising as gas is produced in the tank by microbial activity.
- Biogas (बायोगैस) — Mainly methane, with CO₂ (and H₂). Used for cooking and lighting.
- Gas outlet → nearby houses (गैस निकास → पास के घर) — An outlet connected to a pipe supplies biogas to nearby houses for cooking and lighting.
- Spent slurry outlet → manure (प्रयुक्त घोल निकास → खाद) — The spent slurry is drained through another outlet and can be used as fertiliser.
