Parts and their functions
- Explant (कर्तोतक (एक्सप्लांट)) — Any part of a plant taken out and grown in a test tube under sterile conditions. Whole plants can regrow from it — totipotency.
- Nutrient medium (पोषक माध्यम) — Must give a carbon source such as sucrose, plus inorganic salts, vitamins, amino acids and growth regulators like auxins and cytokinins.
- Somaclones (कायक्लोन) — Thousands of plants made in a short time (micro-propagation), all genetically identical to the original plant. Done commercially for tomato, banana, apple, etc.
- Virus-infected plant (विषाणु-संक्रमित पौधा) — Even if the plant is infected with a virus, its meristem is free of virus.
- Meristem (apical and axillary) (विभज्योतक (शीर्षस्थ व कक्षीय)) — Virus-free. It is removed and grown in vitro to get virus-free plants (banana, sugarcane, potato).
- Virus-free plant (विषाणु-मुक्त पौधा) — A healthy plant recovered from a diseased one.
- Protoplasts (जीवद्रव्यक) — Naked plant cells (cell wall digested, only plasma membrane) from two varieties, each with a desirable character.
- Hybrid protoplast (संकर जीवद्रव्यक) — Two protoplasts fused; it can be grown into a new plant — a somatic hybrid (process: somatic hybridisation).
- Pomato (पोमैटो) — Somatic hybrid of tomato and potato. It did not have all the desired characters for commercial use.
